Halloween Quilts

In celebration of the season, here are some Halloween-themed quilts from past years.

I made this little Happy Jack for a swap I took part in.
The pattern came from a quilt magazine, but I forget which one.

What wonderful Halloween quilted things that you and friends have made over the years. Too cute!

DS1 and wife love the Halloween tree I made for them so I thank you again for the pattern and the goodies!

My OP Halloween quilt is hanging in our entry hall with the fabric Jack-0'Lantern my mother made a couple of decades ago.

Enjoy it all!

Hugs!

Happy Samhain

Halloween - 1

Cait and Kathryn spent much of the weekend with us. On Saturday evening, we enjoyed Rusty’s BBQ, fried okra, and other fixings. Cait and Kathryn carved a Jack-o-lantern. I found him on the front porch after they left on Sunday. I’m not sure if they forgot him or meant to leave him here. I'm just going to enjoy him while he’s here. It has been years since I carved a pumpkin. It used to be a favorite thing to do. Now it’s just easier to rely on my terra cotta Jacks.

Terra_cotta_jacks_2

Looking forward to this week. Y’all know I love Halloween. Andy, Cait, and Kathryn are joining us that evening for chili night. Skipper is looking forward to keeping up a cacophony barking at the trick-or-treaters.

I intend to spend the rest of the week watching scary movies, mysteries, and thrillers and reading haunted books. Maybe I’ll even get back up to the sewing room to finish the Halloween quilt. But for today, sadly, I have to go to the grocery store.

Below are some more of the Yellow House greeters for the trick-or-treaters.

Kitty Kat Paper Doll

DSC_0002
Look what my sister made for me for the “Trick or Tree” Halloween quilt. For now, though, he’s hanging on my tier stand on the dining room table. I think he looks good there, but I’ll probably move him to the quilt eventually, since that's what Ramey made him for.

I have half of the “Bite Me” quilt top put together. As some of you said, after I got the side triangles cut and placed, it was pretty clear that layout #3 in last week’s post was the way to go. I thought I would finish it up today. But I sewed a row on backwards, had to unstitch it and restitch it, got aggravated, and decided to put it on hold until tomorrow.

Our country’s crisis has me with great anxiety and sadness. I know some of you wouldn’t agree, but I despise the danger and chaos this situation has put us in. If you like it, that’s your right. I’ll never understand, but it’s still your right. As for me, I’ll just pray and hope that someday we get back on track.

Agape.

How cute is that cat?! Clearly, this sister needs to make these for sale on etsy. I'd like a Boris, please if she'll take pre-orders!

Bummer about sewing the row on backwards. I've done that several times recently and wonder how - after all these years - could I make such a dumb, basic mistake like that. You're not alone, my friend.

Help Please

As you can see from the photos, there are two different spider web blocks. My problem is that I can't decide how to arrange them in the quilt. For the arrangement I showed in my last post, I simply alternated the blocks all through the quilt. I didn’t like that, so I started experimenting this morning and came up with three other layouts. I like them all better than the first one, but I can’t decide which one I like best. Please vote and tell me which one you would choose.

I probably should have had the side triangles cut out and stuck up there before I asked. But give it a shot, please.

I like #1. The 'jagged edges' are really striking and I like them at the top and bottom of the block.

I like #3 as the dark webs are at top and bottom so it seems a more balanced layout to me.

Tough choices!

I like #3 the best but the I would need to see the side triangles up there before I made a final decision.

#3! I have a hard time seeing the bats in the first two, but the bats are very obvious on the third one.

Back to Bats

Unnamed

I have not forgot about my Halloween Mystery Quilt. Many of the participants have finished their tops and have posted photos on The Quilt Company Facebook Mystery page. But I hit a snag and got delayed.

Unnamed-1
The fabric above is what I had originally planned for the side triangles. But it turns out, I didn’t have enough. I also had planned to use the orange dot fabric somewhere in the top, but the opportunity never arose. So scratch that plan.

Bata fab
I search all the retail fabric sources within driving distance of me and found nothing I liked. So I went online and found this cute bat fabric and decided it was perfect. Not as colorful as the witches and cats, but I think it will work.

I got the rest of my red spiders cut out and fused to the spider wet blocks today. Tomorrow I plan to work on blanket stitching their edges. If I have any steam left, I’ll get the side triangles cut out, and then I can start putting the blocks together into a quilt top.

I have even come up with a name for the quilt: “Bite Me.”

What great progress you've made!! Love the witch fabric and am sorry you didn't have enough of it. The batty fabric are a good alternative. Love the quilt's name!

I pieced a backing for my Halloween tree so now need to layer it and machine quilt it quickly.

Hugs!

Just a thought: perhaps the witch fabric can go in the corners and you can fussy cut it to show the witches you prefer.

More hugs!

I guess i have pushed too hard the past couple of weeks. It caught up with me yesterday. I was in so much pain that I was ready to take a Flexaril. I have a prescription from back in December from which I have taken only a couple of pills. I hate the stuff. I have explained the feeling I get when I take them as like my body is made of green jello. But I’d rather feel like green jello than the pain I was feeling yesterday. So I went to the cabinet where I keep the pills, but I couldn’t find the darn things. I knew they should be there. So I went through the entire cabinet, and then again, and again. No green jello pills.

So I started asking family members if they had taken them or moved them or knew anything about them. No luck. Nobody had a clue. And the pain grew worse. I called the doctor’s office to see if I could get another prescription, explaining to the woman on the phone how bad the pain was. Sorry, she said in a very sympathetic voice. I’d have to come in since it had been so long since the doctor had seen me.

I hung up, said a few choice words and went through the cabinet again. Then I went through other cabinets and drawers and purses and jeans pockets. Those babies were not to be found. So I took two Ibuprofen and lay down on the couch to enjoy the agony. That’s when the worry set in. What if I had dropped the bottle on the floor someplace or put it in a place where one of the animals could get to it? So I got up to look again. This time I decided I would use the stepladder so that I could get a good straight-on look in the top cabinet, And there they were, pushed in the back behind some coffee mugs. If they would have been a snake, they would have--well, you probably know that old saw.

Having already taken the Ibuprofen, I didn’t think I should take the muscle relaxer. So I just set the bottle in a spot in the cabinet where I could see it when I opened the door and went back to the couch.

Fortunately today I feel better. The pain has ratcheted down several notches and I still haven’t taken a Flexaril. So no green jello. I have a pot of chili simmering on the stove, Cait and Kathryn are on there way to watch the Alabama football game with me, and all’s right with the world. Well, mostly.

Below, as promised, are the pictures of members’ show-and-tell from quilt guild meeting on Monday.

Name tag
But first, a picture of my name tag. Each member is asked to wear a handmade name tag to guild meetings. I’ve had several through the years. This is my favorite so far.

Now the quilts.

Nothing worse than a pain that just lingers on. My back gives me a lot of trouble, but hate going to the doctor. I hate taking medicines. Sometimes I think they can be worse than the cause. Hope you will get some relief soon. Nothing I enjy more than quilts. I have way too many, but did make them.

Sorry for the misery you endured when you couldn't find the flexaril pills. Big hugs! Am glad you felt better without them but that they're now found.

Love the name tag you made and the many beautiful and charming quilts!

Another Busy Week

I started my week out with a busy Monday. I attended my quilt guild’s monthly meeting, followed by lunch at my favorite Chinese restaurant, Mr. Wang’s. My guild meets in Homewood, a suburb of Birmingham, and it’s a bit of a drive from my house in Leeds, about 20 miles. So when I’m on that side of town, I always try to include a stop at Mr. Wang’s if it’s anywhere near lunch time. And quilt guild meetings let out just in time for lunch.

569x379_kkb_portraitjpgOur guest speaker this month was the nationally known amazing quilter Karen Kay Buckley. She gave an awesome program, highlighted by lots of her beautiful quilts. I took photos, but they turned out horrifically. Instead of taking my Nikon, I relied on my cell phone, which was a big mistake. I know I can’t take a decent picture with the thing. I don’t know why I keep trying. Anyway, I perused the internet and found photos of some of the quilts she brought. See below.

11As amazing as all Karen’s quilts are, and as much as I loved them, this was actually my favorite thing that she brought--her beautiful and sweet doggie Eve. I tried to talk Karen into giving Eve to me, but the deal didn’t go through.

Karen did, however, gladly sell me a pair of her legendary scissors. I haven’t had a chance to try them out yet, but I’m looking forward to the experience. I’ve heard about them for a long time.

Tomorrow I’ll post photos of quilt guild members’ show-and-tell from the October meeting.

Autumn Goodies

A small group of five of us met at my house on Monday for quilting bee. The others were off on end-of-the-season vacations. But we had a great time, talking and laughing and eating and talking quilts.

73005c2c-5d8c-419e-b320-105988fa0545_1.76ff364ecabad73815f1d2cb5e1cedc4.jpeg-73529af6688cb031fbc3143d16ba6be0adc5292e-optim-450x450 (1)

I served some scrumptious autumn treats, including my famous breakfast casserole. Actually, it’s famous only with my quilting bee because that’s the only time I serve it. Along with the grits/sausage/egg/cheese casserole, we had crisp apple slices, cheese and crackers, and a Patti Labelle bread pudding (which I bought, not made). It was so good. If you like bread pudding, you should try it. I got it at Walmart, but I’m sure most grocery stores have it. (Her sweet potato pie is good too.)

There was very little show and tell: a gorgeous quilt that Nancy’s daughter had made for her mom’s birthday and a sweet little fireman’s teddy bear outfit that Martha made (she’s made a bunch of them). I was so tired and in such a bunch of pain by that time, I didn’t even think of taking pictures. But this morning, I went around and took some shots of some of the Yellow House’s autumn decorations. So I do have something to show.

H10
My galvanized tier stand is full of autumn fancy, including the handmade witch (top tier) and Carol from WHERE THE WILD THINGS ARE (second tier), both gifts from friends.

Hal1
My good friend and blog reader Barbara made this little Halloween quiltlet for me.

H8
“Trick or Tree,” my Halloween quilted wallhanging, came out to help celebrate the season.

H6
Vincent is a creation by my sister Ramey. She made it especially for my Halloween tree.

H7
In September, my book club read and discussed the book LAND OF GRACE by Mike Burrell. It’s the story of a crazy Elvis cult lead by a crazy woman called Mama. (Great book, by the way.) Sister Ramey made Elvis paper dolls to give to everyone at the meeting. I thought Elvis made a perfect companion for Vincent on the Halloween tree.

H5
I’ve had the ceramic Jack-o-Lantern for many years.

H12
I found the tiny Scarecrows at Michaels this year and bought them to add to the ceramic Jack’s floral display.

H3
“Dancing Leaves” hangs in the foyer, with “Endless Autumn” and the Halloween Kitty Kats quilt that sister Joanne made covering the old Singer sewing machine below. The autumn banner on top of the quilt is something I received in a swap some years ago. Don’t remember my swap partner’s name now.

H2

To the best of my recollection, I made this soft sculpture Jack-o-Latern in 1995.

H4

Just some quilts

H1
I made this Spider Web Halloween quilt in, I believe the late 80s. Or it could possibly have been the early 90s. But I know for sure that it was a long time ago. It has polyester batting and is very poofy.

And thu thu thu thu thu thu, that’s all, folks.

Wonderful Halloween yummies as well as delightful eye candy of your quilts and autumn decorations!!

Hope you've got some of that bread pudding left over so you can enjoy it yourself!

You'll be glad to know I have pieced all 9 sections of the Halloween Tree and will send you a photo of it in its incomplete state.

Hugs!

Love your Fall/Halloween quilts & decorations. I'll be sure to look for that bread pudding-it's one of my favorites. Great idea for the paper doll Elvis. Our book club leaders try to have a dessert that's complementary of the period of the book, setting or theme. Hope you're feeling better!
