Can I Get Them Sewn By Christmas?

PJs

In going through UFOs and fabric stash recently, I've found that I have several yardages, enough of each for backings or garments. These were likely bought in the heat of passion without a plan of use in mind--that "oh, I have to have some of that!" feeling. You know the kind.

I also found these pajama patterns and decided that some of these yardages would make great pj pants. So, I wonder if I could get a few sewn by Christmas for gifts. That would maybe mean laying aside the dog blocks and other UFOs I'm working on. We'll see. I think the pj pants will be quick to make. Maybe just a few pairs for the girls (daughters, nieces, DIL, sisters, etc.). The girls do add up, don't they?

Love the patterns and yes, you can do it! Why, it's not quite December yet. Remember that Little Engine That Could! The fabric dogs will understand if they're put on the back burner for now.

I hope to brave an attempt to alter 3 colorful pairs of flannel pj pants that belonged to AMIL when she was much heavier. They're nearly new but fall off of me and I think suspenders are out of the question. I've never tried to alter anything, but think I have enough fabric that's extra that I can put a drawstring or more elastic in if I have to cut off what's there.

Christmas music is playing here in my sewing room, a group called Blackamore's Night and the CD is Winter's Carols. It became a favorite last year. For more than a decade, I've rocked to Mannheim Steamroller thru the Christmas season.

Hugs!

Easy Peasy Christmas gifts! Just remember to either pre-wash the fabric or make them extra long. Someone gifted me a pair of pj pants, and the first time I washed them, they shrunk two inches! Can you say high water pjs?!!!

Black Friday Fido

FriFi

I have a long-standing Black Friday tradition, one that I have observed since well before anybody even called it Black Friday. Back when Black Friday still meant the day the stock market crashed. Not that I'm old enough to remember that day, but I've heard tell.

Anyway, my Black Friday tradition is simple: stay home. It's not a boycott; it's not political or religious. I just hate crowds, and I refuse to fight a fat lady for a $25 discount on a color color tv. That would be two fat ladies fighting--not a pretty sight. And anyway, I'd probably lose.

Now if you love the fight for a bargain and don't mind the crowd, if your tradition is to hit the mall at midnight and wait for the doors to open, I don't hold it against you. To each his own. It's just not my bag.

So my plans for this great American day of debauchery is to sew dog blocks, watch a movie, and eat leftover dressing and cranberry sauce. Speaking of which, I'm hungry

I worked at the quilt shop today in my pajamas. We opened at 6 am and had lots of shoppers in their pajamas. Lots of fun - Black Friday but at a quilt shop. I agree with you about going out on this day but we had a great time. I hope we do it again next year.

No black dog on Black Friday? :)

Applause, applause, my friend! I follow the same day-after-Thanksgiving plan. No shopping or leaving home for me either.

More than a decade ago, I got up at 5:30a to fly to a store by 6a because there was a lovely little ruby necklace at a "limited time" low price. The small rubies were "petals" and there was an even smaller diamond in the flower's center and it was meant to be a Christmas gift for my mother from our boys. Got one - and the same necklace was the same price all day, every day for the next 4 weeks. Never again!

I wanna go to Melinda's quilt shop pj party!

Hugs!

Turkey Day and the Day Before

Turkey Shirt
My Thanksgiving attire

I hope all of my blogging friends are anticipating a great Thanksgiving Day with plenty of plenty: family, friends, and food. Andy is coming over and we're having a quiet day, just me, Andy and Jesse. I'm making chicken and dressing, mashed potatoes, and green beans. Andy is bringing pie!

Yesterday was the 20th anniversary of the day Vann and I were married. I didn't mention it online, because I wanted it to just be ours for the day. We had big plans for our 20th--never fleshed out, but we knew we would do something big. Like a trip to Ireland or train ride across Canada. We never had time to pin it all down.

Happy Anniversary, my Dear Heart. We'll celebrate officially when we're back together. I love you.

Happy 20th Anniversary! What a wonderful, loving tribute to Vann from years of sharing life and love. I believe love never ends and is never wasted.

Happy Thanksgiving to you and your family, too! It was just the three of us here too, me, DH, and DS2. Of course we missed AMIL so very much and ate here so we'd be gathered around our table and not at her table since she's not there.

Big hugs!

Puppy Progress

Six Pups

I was down for a couple of days trying to tame my horrible back pain. It began to get better yesterday. Today, I am back to birthing puppies. Two stitched this morning. I think that's going to be it for the day. I don't want to sit at the sewing machine so long that the severe pain returns. So I'm going downstairs to do some laundry and read a bit.

Taco
Meanwhile, don't worry 'bout nothing. Taco has everything under control.

Still Doing the Dog

Satdog1

But much more slowly. In fact, it took me two days to finish the fourth dog, but now I'm one quarter way through with them.

I suppose it's the cold weather, but something has made my back pain kick into high gear. Now not only standing but sitting at the sewing machine as well causes a great deal of discomfort. So a few minutes sewing at a time is all I can manage.

Satdog2

I have the next block laid out on the diagram, ready to stitch. But just now, I'm returning to the heating pad and some reading or maybe watch a movie. My life is so exciting.

Your barreling along well with these cute doggies! With the various aches, pains, and bothers to take into account, all progress you manage is good. Applause!

Is it possible for you to use a heating pad when sitting in your sewing machine chair? What about one of those beanbag neck or upper back warmers that you heat in the microwave? Wish there was something that could help your back as you keep sewing and cutting.

Books and movies are a good refuge when needed. I retreat to those pleasures when fatigue takes me to the wayside.

It's a cold, soup in the Crock Pot kind of day here.

Hugs!

Working Doggedly

Dogs1-2

The second dog block was quicker and easier to put together--and it turned out to be almost exactly the same size as the first one. So either the Buggy Barn instructions are wrong about the size, or more likely, my seams are a little bit wider than the Buggy Barn seams. Any-hoo, I think I all my blocks just might turn out to be nearly the same size so that I can trim them all the same and adjust the setting pieces accordingly.

Some of you have asked after my Sophie. She's still on her medications, but I can't see any appreciable difference in her condition. She still refuses to put weight on her left hind leg--although she gets around just fine without it. (Well, except for hopping up into her sleeping chair. I still have to lift her for that. But she can go up and down stairs ok.) I guess she has learned from Skipper. The reason his name is Skipper is that ever since he came to live with us, when he runs he skips, holding up sometimes his left hind leg and sometimes his right hind leg. At first, I thought something was wrong with him. But it turned out that, no, he's just a Skipper.

Cheerrs that Dog 2 is similarly sized to Dog 1!! You're on your way to a darling quilt, no doubt!

I remember a dear quilting friend who fussy cut various dog fabrics to use the dog squares as the center for Log Cabin blocks and she named the quilt "Dog Cabin". :)

Am glad Sophie is managing as well as possible with her aching joint. Would a low footstool assist her into her sleeping chair so you wouldn't have to lift her?

Stay cozy!

Dog Gone It!

I received my Buggy Barn Crazy Dog Days booklet, chose my dog fat quarters (from my stash), and made my first dog block, which was not as simple as I had expected. But then, nothing ever is.

Dog3

First of all, after reading the directions, I didn't have much of a clue how to start, much less finish. I think the Buggy Barn ladies assumed, when they wrote it, that everyone was familiar with their technique. I was not. I combed the internet and finally found a tutorial on YouTube showing the Buggy Barn crazy quilting technique--not for the same quilt, but it helped.

Next, the Buggy Barn lady in the video, after explaining how to stack my fat quarters to cut, said that she cuts eight to 16 layers at a time with her rotary cutter--and usually doesn't start with a fresh blade. I started with a fresh blade, which refused to cut through my 16 layers. So I divided them into to stacks and still had to do quite a bit of sawing to get my layers cut.

Things got a little bit easier after I got my dogs cut. It's a fun technique. Leaving your pieces stacked as they were cut, you remove all the dog pieces from the top of the stack and move them to the bottom of the stack, leaving the background pieces as they are. That gives you blocks that each have two different fabrics.

Dog2

Sewing the pieces together took time and attention, but it really wasn't too terribly difficult. I only had to pull out two seams and restitch them.

My next problem came when I had finished my dog block. It did not turn out to be the size stated in the instructions, which was 13" x 17". Mine is just a dab over 12" x 16".

Dog1

I'll see how the rest turn before I toss it though. If they all turn out to be the instruction size, I will make Dog One over. But if it looks like all or most of my dogs are going to be the smaller size, I'll just adjust the doghouse pieces accordingly and have a smaller quilt.

I'm supposed to, according to instructions, use wool for the noses, spots, and bones. If I do that, I'll have to find a source for wool. Anybody know a good one?

I want to make Crazy Hearts next.

Love your Dog 1 and am glad you plan to carry on so your quilt will be whatever size it is. It's just too cute to toss despite the bothers with getting started.

I've heard many quilters head for Goodwill or the Salvation Army for wool clothes that have the colors they need. I'd think that flannel would be a better nose fabric, tho!

This quilt will be a delight forevermore.

Winter In Dixie

Dogs

Winter is here. It's wet and cold and grey. The dogs don't like it; my kids don't like it; my sister doesn't like it. I LOVE IT!

I don't know what's wrong with me. I love winter, much more so than summer, when all I can do is sweat and fan and gasp.

The dogs wouldn't even go outside in the rain and cold last night at bedtime for their last nature call. Of course, they made me get up at 3:30 this morning and let them out when the rain had stopped.

But at any rate, the way time flies these days, winter will be all over by the time we can turn around twice, and the hot days will be back.

So don't worry dogs and family. Just hunker down, keep warm, and know that it's all temporary.

I hear you! I, too, love winter as far as staying inside, looking outside, and having yummy soups and winter beverages to help me stay warm. I do not like having to get out on very cold or slippery days and plan my errands accordingly as much as possible. I even schedule medical and dental appts. for spring and fall.

We had rain all day Monday and today the high is expected to be only 37*F. Brrrrrr! Soup's on!

My plan is to cut, piece, and press two or three bindings for AMIL's last 3 wall quilts for her neices.

Hugs!

Gobble Gobble Gobble!

Turkey

homas Q. Turkey

Nicole at Sister's Choice Blog made a version of this block, which she found on Bee in My Bonnet. When I saw Nicole's turkey block, I, of course, had to make one of my own. I love turkeys. I even have a turkey collection, which I must blog about someday. Not real turkeys. Ceramic ones, etc.

Both Nicole and Lori (at Bee in My Bonnet) made place mats from their turkey blocks. I'm going to machine quilt mine (I do pretty good with machine quilting if the project is small.) Then I'm going to hang him in my kitchen. Not just for Thanksgiving, but all year.

Endeavoring to Persevere

Album
I finished hand quilting and binding the Little Album quilt before family and pet infirmities struck.

Creative endeavors tend to fall by the wayside in the midst of family emergencies (including furry family). Daughter Andy is much better and back to work. But Sophie is still hobbling badly. She can still get around very well, but she won't put weight on that left hind leg. But we're still medicating, giving the drugs more time to kick in.

I've had a couple of days of intense back pain myself, the worst I've had, well ever, I think. I think my problem is caused mainly by lifting Sophie to help her get up on her chair and up the back steps. But I took a muscle relaxer before bed last night, employed the heating pad, and then took a soaky hot tub bath this morning, and my pain has eased off some. At least now I can stand without causing groans and tears.

So now that things are settling down a bit, I'm going to try to get back to the sewing machine. And while my main goals have been UFOs for the past few months, I've decided I want to make something new again...

Dog quilt

I found the old calendar in a stack of stuff in my sewing room, and got a strong urge to make this quilt. So I ordered the pattern from Buggy Barn or Amazon or somewhere. But, anyway, it's a Buggy Barn pattern. It should be here any day. I might not make the whole big quilt, maybe just four blocks or so for a wall hanging. That shouldn't take long. I won't have to buy any fabric. I think I can scrounge enough from my stash and scraps to make a fine doggie quilt.

So sorry to hear your back is causing miseries and am glad the meds, heating pad, and hot bath helped. No doubt you're right that lifting sweet Sophie is at least part of the reason for your pain, so perhaps doggie ramps are in order? The change in weather may be partly to blame, too.

Your Album quilt is absolutely lovely and I know it delights you to see it finished! Applause, applause!!

Love your next project, too, as those cute doggie guys with their bones and dog houses are just too adorable.

Sending healing hopes and vibes to both you and Sophie.

Klogs, Dogs, and Daughters

Securedownload

I didn't know how badly in need of attention my shoe wardrobe was until a few weeks ago when I attended a communion service at church. As I had done almost every Sunday for years--and years (and years), I slipped on my favorite pair of clogs before leaving the house that Sunday morning. They were very comfortable and dressy enough for church but also could serve as casual. I had worn them lots of places over time.

When I got home and took them off, I chanced to glance at the soles. WHAT SOLES? They barely had any soles. Just holes and cracks and deteriorating material.

I was appalled. At my church, we have several methods of communion taking, the most common one being kneeling at the altar--with the soles of our feet pointing out at the congregation still in their seats. Everyone had seen the horrible condition of my shoe soles. I'm still embarrassed. Not very Christian, I know, thinking of those who have no shoes at all, but I'm embarrassed all the same.

Reluctantly, and with moist eyes, I relegated my favorite shoes to the trash can and immediately ordered two new pairs of clogs, a pair of Clarks and a pair of Klogs (photo above). I love red shoes, and when I saw these on the Internet, they had my name written all over them. (I rubbed the writing off.)

Enough about shoes. For the past few days, my life has been stressful and busy. I've had a very sick daughter and a crippled dog to care for. The daughter is much better, but the dog, Miss Sophie still refuses to put any weight on her left hind leg. Dr. Rachel blames the trouble on arthritis, but I'm skeptical. Anyway, we're treating her with Rimadyl and Tramadol, which, so far, seems to have had little effect. If she's still no better when these two prescriptions are finished, I'm going to ask for X-rays.

I have a ton of laundry to do, so I best get cracking. Happy Hump Day to all.

Love your new red shoes and I hear you on how difficult it is to keep track of all parts of your wardrobe so all is in good repair. If you're looking for something interesting, exciting, and very well written, click on the link to the novel and have a look.

Nov. 2014 147Any kind of meeting at my house necessarily includes dogs...

Love your blog, book clubs are great, enhanced by mimosas no less. My West Coast brother, a writer all his life, and myself, have had discussions about Southern writers, where did they all go. Discussion prompted a while back by the book, The Help. My son, the attorney, was always interested in books, attended a symposium at Ole Miss some years ago on writers of the South. Glad to know they are not gone away, at least some who are interested are meeting at your house. Hope you can keep the fibro wolves at bay and stay comfortable.

Too Many Tasks

BOM
My entry for the block-of-the-month drawing at guild on Monday

I'm exhausted and the week is only half-way done. I should never have scheduled two meetings at my house in the same week. At the time, I thought it was a good idea as I would have to clean only once. WRONG! I was not taking into consideration that I live with four furbies and a young man.

Well, Anna is here today to help clean. And I'm going shopping directly after she leaves to get stuff to serve lunch to book club tomorrow. I think I will get already-prepared stuff, like deli salads, etc. Maybe I'll even go all the way to Whole Foods. My enthusiasm for cooking has just about run out. I made grits casserole and pumpkin squares for bee brunch on Monday.

I made a big pot of homemade beef stew for me and Jesse for supper last night. I think Jesse ate on it for half the night. It was good.

Well done on honoring your body's limits - as unwelcome as they are - and for giving yourself permission to get some prepared foods to serve tomorrow. You'll set a pretty table and all will be enjoyed without a doubt. Besides, shopping takes up what energy you'd have used for cooking so something had to give.

I've seen bottle quilts with interesting bug and veggie fabrics in the bottles but I've never seen a fish bowl quilt like Sally made and the butterfly quilt is charming. I always love Pinwheel quilts!

Well, they're all cute as can be from the Mary Grace's creative creatures to Mary S.'s Hexie quilt! Martha's modern squares quilt is lovely and is sure to be treasured by her daughter!

Did you take a break to follow Sophie's good example after your wonderful friends departed?

Thanks for the eye candy!

Hugs!

The quilts are beautiful. Hope everyone enjoyed themselves as much as your co-hostess. Patty Mc
