A Skipper Cat-astrophe

Jan reminded me that I have not told the Skipper story that I promised a week or so ago. It's not a pretty story, but one that should be told I suppose.

One afternoon, I hooked up the dogs and took them for a walk in the neighborhood. This was before the Great Heatwave of 2012 struck and we could still breathe out there. My furry charges were doing great, behaving well and keeping up a good pace with only an occasional delay for a bit of sniffing, piddling, and pooping.

We had made it halfway around the block to the wooded vacant lot at the corner of Stewart and Castlewood when all that changed. There at the edge of the woods, grooming himself with total abandon, was a juicy neighborhood cat. The sight was more than Skipper Lou Blue could endure with calm. Like magic, he was out of his harness, off his leash, chasing said kitty down the hill and into the woods.

I immediately let Sophie off her leash (my good dog Sophie does not run away), and into the woods we went to catch our wayward beastlet. Now these are dense woods with trees, bushes, vines, and all kinds of undergrowth. Which might be a good thing. If it had been clear sailing, I might have killed myself. As it was, I had plenty of things to grab on my way down the hill. I stumbled and flailed and scratched, and scraped myself, but I kept to my feet. Almost to the end.

As I hustled through the woods to try and catch my runaway pooch, grasping at tree limbs, bushes, and bird nests, I finally felt my balance going. I can only imagine the picture I must have presented as I twirled and pirouetted, trying to regain my footing and keep from falling, but in the end, it was fruitless. I went headfirst to the ground and skiddered along, finally coming to a stop with my head completely buried in dead leaves.

Spluttering, and brushing myself off, trying to decide how many bones I had broken, I sat up to find that I had two dogs checking out my condition as well. There was Sophie, calmly looking at me as if to ask, "Why do you do these things?" And on my other side was little ol' Skipper, panting and frisking about. The cat was chased; long live the cat.

Somehow I had managed to hold onto Skip's leash with his harness attached. But the boy was naked. Somewhere in the woods, he had dispensed with his collar. I grabbed him and sat there a long time, telling him what all horrible things I was going to do to him as soon as I could breathe again. He believed not a word of it, curled up in my lap until I could again get to my feet and carry the doggies home.

We have not been walking since. Right after, the heat hit; so I think if I should have to make one of those Skipper retrievals in this weather, I would not survive. Andy volunteered to look for his collar, and found it. The leash and harness that he left in the woods in front of our house on his previous cat chase remains in those woods.

Now, here are some photos from the outside of The Yellow House. We're ready for Independence Day--and some cool weather.

It has taken all morning to upload this post. Typepad is acting up again. Or maybe it's my computer or internet connection. But the only place I have trouble is on the blog, so I don't think so. Anyway. It's again all there. Let's see what happens when I try to publish. Things have been disappearing.

I'm also linking to Beverly's Pink Saturday.

Hi there, I found you over at Pink Saturday. I am always glad to find another Alabama blogger! Your photos and your front porch are just lovely! And I can relate to your doggie story! I also see a few books on your sidebar that I missed reading, have to order those!
Thanks for sharing,
Dorothy

Maybe you need to trade Skipper in for a couple of chimpanzees. They might be easier to manage.

Susan I totally enjoy all aspects of your blog but especially the doggie "tails" and photos! However, I understand how you are sometimes not happy with Skipper -- such as this latest escapade!! Look for an entry from you each day when I'm at the computer. (And, I'm not a "fireball"; that was the name of one of our cats.) Annette

Thanks for the good laugh at the word picture you painted of this unwelcome escapade. You're an excellent writer, so where's the book? :)

Love your pretty front porch and the glorious flowers.

It's horridly and dangerously hot here, too, with 103*F yesterday, 104*F today. One of the most violent storms that wasn't a hurricane roared thru here at 11p last night with 60mph hot wind, incredible lightening and thunder, and it was just plain scary.

Thanks be to God for air conditioning and for shade.

Hugs!

Thanks for sharing another adventure with Skipper! He certainly keeps things jumping--mainly YOU, right?! So glad you weren't injured in the chase! Your front porch looks so inviting for the 4th!

Susan, I'm so very glad you are alright, but I have to admit that I laughed until tears were rolling. That was largely due to the fact that I would have done the same thing, dropping the cane I use to pursue the wayward pup! The way you wrote this episode, I could see it as though in a short film clip. Thanks so much for sharing this episode of "Sophie Belle and Skipper Lou"...I can't wait for your next adventure, though I do hope it is just as funny, but maybe with a little less 'adventure' for you included. Big Hugs...

Oh, MERCY! All I can say is you must LOOOOVE that naughty doggy beyond imagination to deal with all his shenanigans! (Sweet Ms. Sophie, YOU must be horrified by your brother's naughtiness. You are such a well behaved girl!) LOL! And I have to confess that, while I was worried for YOU because you definitely don't need to be chasing & falling, I did indeed have to smile over that escapade! By the way, I suggest you rename him! Perhaps Houdini???? Love the pretties around your house!!! Also, love YOU!

The whole time I was reading this post I kept thinking, "have I already read this post, it sounds so familiar". Nope it wasn't me it was Skipper! You could have just copied that earlier post and labeled it part two! Except that this time you found the leash!

Love the yellow house, all ready for the 4th!

More Busyness

My blogging is suffering. Too much else has been requiring my attention, and all of a sudden, here it is Friday and I haven't blogged since Tuesday.

On Wednesday, five of my high school girlfriends joined me at my house for a planning session for our 50th class reunion in August. We started at 10:00, broke for lunch of my homemade chicken salad, fruit, and chocolate cake, then got back to work. I don't remember what time we wrapped up the meeting, but it was late afternoon, I'm sure.

Yesterday, I had a dentist appointment and an appointment with my eye doctor. All went well. The dentist was just for cleaning, and the eye doctor for annual check up. He told me that I have cataracts, but they are not at the stage that requires surgery yet. Thank God for that. I surely don't have time to have my eyes zapped. Probably next year though.

I spent a little time going around the house and taking shots of various items I've found in my thrifting adventures that I don't think I've shown here. I also took some shots of the front porch and was soaking wet when I got inside. Temps for the rest of the week at least are supposed to exceed 100 degrees. I truly detest this kind of weather. But it's even more horrible in other areas. Seems as though Colorado is on fire. Let's pray for those people and the animals that live in and near the fires.

And please, friends, don't leave your doggies or kitties in the car during this hot weather. And put some dishes of water our for the birds, squirrels, and stray whatevers.

Greetings to you, Sophie, and Skipper! Hope all of you are content in wonderful cool air today - and will be for the coming few days, too. This heat is AWFUL, to say the least.

You have really scored big time on your various thrifting jaunts. Well done!

Prayers for rain for Colorado and all areas that need it, in helpful amounts, and without flooding. Okay?!

AMIL and FIL are now at the same rehab facility so life is somewhat easier. Please pray for FIL's attitude to improve as he is not cooperating with PT as well as I thought he was. Glub, glub!

Sewing? It's a distant memory... sigh!

Outdoor Progress

I went outside this morning to take photos of my backyard progress. It was so humid my glasses fogged up and my knees went weak. But I got a few shots before the the sticky heat drove me inside to climate controlled air. Here they are.

Sat2
My piece de resistance! Jesse helped me move this VERY HEAVY old pedestal sink from the basement into the backyard, and I planted it with inpatiens and some hangy green stuff. Vann had the sink when we married. I have no idea where he got it. I think I have mentioned in the past that Vann was somewhat of a hoarder. I have always wanted to make a planter or bird bath out of it, but some folks I know claimed that would be redneck tacky. What do you think? Tacky or cool?

Sat11
The plants are still suffering a little repotting shock, but they should fill out and look great in a day or two.

Sat6
I set up a little bird-feeding station, and watched the nuthatches enjoy it until roosting time yesterday. Then Old Red Tail the Squirrel came sometime and messed everything up. I knew he was going to do it because I saw him sneaking around the bottom of the table just before I stopped watching.

I really like your sink as a planter --- and the little green plant that trails is called Creeping Jenny. It also makes a great ground cover and here in NC is overwinters if our winter is not too severe. Each planter needs a "thriller, filler and a spiller!"
Looks like you have done that with your impatients and creeping jenny!

A Week of Dirt and Flowers

Old Fibromonster has lain pretty low this week, and the back problems have been but an aggravation. So I made me some hay while the sun shines--and boy! has the sun ever been shining! It's hot as chile peppers here.

I have made mucho progresso in the back yard. Pictures later. I'm not finished, but then I probably never will be. That project promises to remain a work in progress.

We have two more members in the Dollhouse Block of the Month: Colleen and Pam. Welcome ladies. At some point, I'll post a list of all members in my sidebar. I know, like me, everyone is anxious to see your blocks. At least one member is doing hand applique.

I have a wonderful Skipper story to tell from an incident on Wednesday. But not today. Maybe tomorrow. Today, it's back to the backyard, if Jesse shows up to be my lifter. I have an unfinished planting project that requires some muscle to get the planter out of the garage and into the backyard.

Because I've spent all my spoons gardening this week, I have little sewing/quilting progress to report. I'm almost finished with my first Dollhouse block, but rather than show you an almost finished block, I'd rather show you the pictures of the quilt show quilts that I didn't get posted before. After you've enjoyed the quilt show, be sure to post a link to your blog with Mr. Linky so that we can all see what's been going on in your life this week.

Ah Shucks! I thought I would be able to put names with these quilts. But I've lost the document that has the names of all the entrants, so I guess you'll just have to enjoy the quilts without knowing the names of the talented quilters.

And thanks again to my friend Sharon Bull who took these pictures and sent them to me.

Mulch Ado About Nothing

Skip2

Skipper and I have been working in the backyard this morning. I've been spreading mulch while the Skipster dug a big hole up in the wooded area, all the while barking his shrill little "I'm digging to China" bark. Fearing neighbor Robert was reaching the end of his rope, I finally scooped up Skipper and took him inside, where he commenced to bark his "I want back outside" bark. Sophie just watched the whole spectacle with her "WTH?" Sophie look.

After I drank a gallon of ice water and showered, the dogs and I went out to survey our (my) work, and Skip took the opportunity to bask in the rays a few minutes. Now he's in one of the pink office chairs snoozing, and his sister Sophie is doing the same at the top of the stairs. I myself am about to take up residence on the couch and watch the "Downton Abbey" CDs that Ramey brought me. Does anybody know when Series 3 starts?

Skip1

How do you like our ceramic plate border? I have to collect a few more cheap yard sale/thrift store plates to finish it.

What a cute border your charmingly mismatched plates make for your garden! Hope the rain will keep them nicely washed for you and that they'll remind Skipper the Excavator that the garden is off limits.

Hope you're not having the heat we're having. It's too near 100*F for any outdoor fun and getting into a car that's been outside is dangerous.

I haven't seen any of Downtown Abbey so need to check to see if the library has it.

Backyard Progress

Zinna by tea pot

I know I've been absent from the blogosphere for a few days, but I have been busy. I have spent mornings in my backyard (well, part of the mornings), cleaning up the mess that the weather and good old Skipper have done. As it turned out, Skipper had dug just enough holes in just the right places that I had to do hardly any digging to plant my nandinas. I just had to rough up the soil a little and add my garden soil.

However, while I was planting, Skipper Lou Blue could not get it through his head that I didn't need any more holes dug. We have had quite a few battles this week.

So the nandinas are planted and the pebble walkway is restored. All I have left to do, I think, is to place large stones (which I have) for a border and add mulch around the plants. (The stones will keep the rain from washing the mulch down into the walkway, I hope.) Jesse went to Lowe's yesterday and got me three large bags of pine bark mulch. It looks like enough to mulch my whole neighborhood, so I should have some left over for later work.

Of course, after yard work, or any kind of physical labor, I'm wiped out for the rest of the day. Consequently, I have not been upstairs to the Big Mac (where I blog) or in the sewing room for several days. I'm feeling pretty well this morning, but I've decided to lay off a day of yard work and let my body recoup some spoons.

Tues1

Tues2Lori and Greg returned from their travels on Sunday night and stopped by to pick up Daisy and Curtis from doggie camp. (I miss those mutts.) They brought me a bunch of goodies. A pretty t-shirt, a bag of Moose Balls (honey roasted peanuts), and the cutest little bear magnet. Thanks, my sweet friends. And thanks for trusting your good doggies with me and my mutts.

My friend Sharon B. sent me pictures of the Best Little Quilt Show quilts that I didn't get around to photographing. So tomorrow, I'll show you them.

For now, I have some blanket stitching on a dollhouse block to finish.

Treasure Report

Although neither one of the last two yard sales I attended was too exciting overall, I seem to have scored the one treasure that each of them had.

Sat1
Just cast your eyes on this wonderful Double Wedding Ring quilt that I found yesterday, quite by chance, at a yard sale I encountered while driving to the grocery store. It was a huge sale, just as the sign advertised, but this was absolutely the only thing there that held any interest for me.

I grabbed the quilt up immediately when I saw it and asked the lady in charge how much. I expected a price that had the word hundred after the number. This is an old quilt. Very old. Made from 30s/40s prints, gently faded and worn, in terrific condition. I was already calculating what I could do without during the next couple of months to pay for it.

"Ten dollars," she replied.

I almost screamed TEN DOLLARS?!?!? But I caught myself in time and just gave her a sweet smile and said, "Thanks," and clutched that quilt like it was a lifesaver. I looked around a little more so no one would catch on that I was absconding with a treasure that I had stolen for $10. Then I paid up and left.

Sat2

My sisters are going to be so jealous. We always gets jealous of each other when we find wonderful treasures that the others have not had the opportunity to find.

Sat3

At another yard sale a couple of weeks ago, I found the little glass container below. I love its design. I'm a real fan of bees and anything with bees on it. (Click on the photo to enlarge so you can see the bees and the skiffs. Don't you love it?

Sat5

HAPPY WEEKEND, EVERYONE.

Love that quilt! Ten dollars???!!!! Amazing. I have one from that same era that looks almost identical to yours except mine has blue binding. Mine is quilted just like yours and the edges follow the same lines. I wouldn't sell mine, but if I should, I'd ask in the hundreds. You lucky gal, you!

That quilt is beautiful! Don't you wonder where it's been all these years? So wonderful that you were able to bring it home! It is certainly a treasure! Lucky you and lucky quilt to have a new 'life!'

It's a GOOOOOOD thing I love you so much or I'D be SUPER jealous. As it is, I'm just PLAIN old jealous. Sigh. That quilt is a true find and a real treasure! So is the gorgeous glass piece! Glad you were there at the right time!

Love it, Susan! Also, love the bee treasure! Since my son just started beekeeping, I notice bees everywhere! And my name Debra means "bee."

I am so jealous about your quilt find! Lucky you! I could feel the excitement with you when you scored it. The candy dish is just too sweet! Great finds! Thanks for sharing.

Correction

In Tuesday's post, I wrongly credited this quilt to Carolyn Gilliland. The quiltmaker is actually Mopsey Forsee. Got my wires crossed again.

Please pardon me ladies for the error.

Sneak Peek

SneakPeek
Take a peek.

I worked a couple of hours in the sewing room yesterday and got the first block of the dollhouse quilt all cut out, sewn, and fused. I'm going to machine blanket stitch around the edges of the fused pieces. I suppose, if one preferred, you could do hand applique and/or hand blanket stitch on this quilt, but some of the pieces are quite small for hand work. I'm not really good at hand work on small things, and anyway fusing is faster.

Four of you responded to my invitation to join in a Dollhouse Quiltalong:
Mona
Laura W.
Jan O.
Nancy H.

With me, that makes five, a nice tidy little group. Of course if others would like to join in, you're more than welcome.

We'll do one block a month, starting with the Living Room block. Watch for an email from me with more info.

The finished size of the quilt is 58" x 78". The blocks vary in size. In addition to patterns for all the room blocks, the design also contains an attic and a front door. So that's ten months to do all ten blocks and another month to put your top together. Here's the schedule:

June 15-July 15--Living Room
July 15-Aug. 15--Kitchen
Aug. 15-Sept. 15--Sewing Room
Sept. 15-Oct. 15--Laundry Room
Oct. 15-Nov. 15--Bathroom
Nov. 15-Dec. 15--Bedroom 1
Dec. 15-Jan. 15--Nursery
Jan. 15-Feb. 15--Bedroom 2
Feb. 15-Mar. 15--Attic
Mar. 15-Apr. 15--Front Door
Apr. 15-May 15--Putting it all together

There will be a prize for the quilter who finishes her top first.
More about that later.

There will be no quilting police here, however. If you don't finish one of your blocks in the allotted month, that's ok. No pressure. And if you finish a block and want to go on to the next early, just email me for the next block pattern.

Next summer we'll have a big quilt show and prize drawing. Meanwhile, you can send me pics of our blocks as you go if you like and I'll share them here. Those of you with blogs can share your blocks there and I'll post a link. The only rule is HAVE FUN!

Now for those of you working on UFOs and other projects, Mr. Linky is below, waiting for your links to be entered. Nothing is more inspiring that seeing all the gorgeous work y'all do.

My Doll family has moved into their summer place, so I left a link.

Can't wait to see your dollhouse quilt rooms as they get done.

Love the little peek you gave us of your dollhouse living room. Your fusing and sewing plans sound good to me.

Hope all of the Dollhouse Quilters have lots of fun and enjoy finding delightful fabrics for each piece in every room! I look forward to following everyones' progress.

No UFO project to show off for me as my attention has been elsewhere. With FIL settled in rehab, I hope to have time to myself once more.

Hugs!

The dollhouse quilt is going to be so cute. Wish I could join in but I have a booked schedule until Oct and I'm afraid I would have to add it to my UFO list.

Susan, I found my inspiration color palette today. I am going to use memories of my 2 Grandmas houses to add to my doll house. My husband has minor surgery next week so I plan to get everything ready for "sitting around" a hospital. Itching to get stitching.

A Dollhouse Quiltalong

After blogging yesterday, I decided I would go to the sewing room and make one quilt block. Surely I had enough spoons to make just one block. So I started gathering my supplies for a quilt (see photo below) that requires fusible web. Lo and behold, no fusible web. I was all out.

Surely I have enough spoons to drive to Hancock Fabrics and get some fusible, I said to myself. So after counting doggie heads and making sure everyone was inside, off I went to the fabric store. But, alas, the trip took all the rest of my spoons, so although I got my fusible (and a cute fat quarter and a few buttons to use on the quilt), I was down for the day.

This is the quilt pattern, designed by Australian quilter Rosalie Quinlan. I'm going to start with the living room and do one block a month.

Would anyone like to join me in a Dollhouse Quiltalong?

You can get the patterns for all the blocks and for finishing from Rosalie for $40 (I didn't know this when I ordered mine and paid way much more than that from an Australian quilt shop.) I've emailed Rosalie and asked if I can share my pattern with friends. I haven't heard from her yet but will be happy to share if she gives the okay

If you want to join the quiltalong and share my pattern if Rosalie approves, send me your email address to suscleve@yahoo.com. We'll start with July, and make a block each month until we have them all done. Then we'll put our blocks together and hold and blog quilt show (with prizes) so everyone can see what we've done.

On the guild's free table on Monday, I found the above 4-yard piece of fabric, which I plan to use for the backing for this quilt. Sometimes you can find pure treasures on our free table, as I did this month. I didn't feel bad about scooping it up before anyone else could get it because I brought a stack of quilting magazines for the table.

What a charming quilt and I love the fabric you scored from the free table!

With all that's going on here, I think I must decline this quilt-along as I can only do so much - as my bazillion UFOs atest.

FIL is in rehab and isn't a happy camper but it is necessary.

Does anyone have the 2008 pattern from Blank Textiles called "Shade Cascade"? I downloaded the pattern back then but cannot find it now. It may have been on a different computer that crashed. I just need to know what size to cut the corner squares for the quarter Log Cabin blocks. Thanks!

Hugs!

Susan, I love your blog and I love the dollhouse quilt. I would be so happy to join you. How big is the finished quilt? I will wait to hear from you about your sharing the pattern or if we should buy our own.
Thanks for the wonderful, heartfelt blog! I look forward to reading it every day.
P.S. I love, love, love your mama in the mirror quilt. I am working on a quilt using old photographs from my family.
