Oh, What a Wimp I Am!

3-12-11-Pain-Management-A I really and truly hate feeling like an invalid. I do everything I can to keep up the appearance that I'm a vital, active woman who can do anything she pleases--like crawl around on the floor basting a quilt. (Won't do that again.)

I walk the dogs every day, weather permitting, even though sometimes I feel like I'm going to have to call 911 before I get back home.

I sign up for quilting retreats and Bible study retreats when I know in my heart that I probably won't be up for them when the time comes. I promise to make quilts and food for friends and church when I know how iffy a proposition it is for me to promise to do anything. Sometimes I have to beg off, but not often. A promise is a sacred thing to me. I don't like breaking them.

I so want to be the person I was a few years ago, but I'm afraid that's not going to happen. When I was first diagnosed with this fibro-freakin-myalgia crap, lots of people, including some doctors, told me that the symptoms tend to get better over time. NOT! Mine have only got worse. Much worse. Age probably has something to do with it too, as I have aged eight years since being diagnosed. And rainy, drab, cold days (like yesterday and today) are particularly bad. These are the kinds of days I used to enjoy most--snuggled up with a cup of tea reading a good book made for such a cozy feeling. But it's hard to feel cozy when your muscles and joints are screaming.

Fibro has taken a lot from me, even if it has had to pry it out of my clenched fingers. I rarely go out at night anymore; by the time nighttime comes, I usually have no spoons left at all. I miss out on a lot of socializing with friends, and I hate that. And for some reason, that makes me feel guilty. Like I've become my old bed-ridden great aunt, whom we always thought was a malingerer who just wanted to lie in bed, read mystery novels, and let her husband take care of her. She probably had fibromyalgia in the days before anyone knew what it was.

Have you heard enough of my whining yet? Sorry for all that. Sometimes I just have to let it all out. This condition makes me so angry. But I know I should be grateful, AND I AM, that what I have is not terminal, and that I have so many blessings to be thanksful for. And aways I try to remember this: I'm not my disease (or syndrome or whatever). I'm still me.

I got most of the Teddy Bear quilt bound yesterday before my hands stopped working entirely. I think I can finish it today. Then I'm hoping to make a pan of tetrazzini out of the last of the turkey leftovers. But first, a shower is in order. I haven't washed my hair in three days. It might not get blow dried, but at least it'll be clean.

It sounds awful! I am so sorry! My cousin suffers from Fibro as well. She has since her early thirties and it's just terrible. There are weeks when she uses a cane and she's only 38. Awful. You have a wonderful, positive attitude!!

Oh Susan, you have permission to have some wimpy days. :D I can only imagine what it is like to be forced to slow down by a body in rebellion... (Well, I can do more than imagine, I just don't have any actual experience with this particular disorder.:p)
You know you are not your bed ridden great aunt, LOL!!! You are still a vibrant, multi-talented woman whose gift of words is not only therapeutic but comedic, even when discussing the sadder issues of life... Keep on keeping on Ladybug! Love you!

Susan if you can't speak your mind here, where can you? Don't forget that you are also informing your readers about this condition - I for one didn't know anything about it before I started reading your blog - and that is a good thing. It seems to me that you manage to do more for other people than most fit and healthy people do. Don't feel guilty- take care of yourself when you need to. I'll let you into a secret - I'm a little younger than you and fit and healthy and I don't go out in the evenings if I can help it - no energy left by then and it's so nice to stay home! Take care my dear - and don't feel guilty - we're on your side!!

I kept reading, all the time thinking, "I could have WRITTEN this post!" I feel EXACTLY like you do, Susan! But we aren't quitters, you & I, and so we keep doing as much as we CAN do (and often more than we SHOULD do.) And the one thing I MOST want to say is this: You are allowed to fuss about Fibro or anything ELSE that needs fussing about. I'm betting I speak for ALL your online friends when I say we LOVE you & are here to listen & sympathize & WISH we could make you feel better! LOVE YOU!!!!

Susan, I can't tell you how grateful I am to be as healthy as I am. When I read your post I realize that my little aches and pains are just that - l i t t l e. I don't know how (and hope that I never do) I could cope with a condition such as yours. I, and so many of your loyal readers, admire what you do accomplish despite the limitations that your body forces on you. So if you feel like "whining" feel free to do so - this is your blog after all. As for going out in the evening I rarely do so - after a full day it is nice to relax at home. My prescription to you is to do what you can when you can and don't worry about the rest.

Hang in there. I know this is a terrible illness. You really do quite well! I am so sorry you are in such pain.

On 11/30/2010, Barbara Anne said ...

Hey, honeybunch! I hear you. I well remember when my spoon drawer was full and I was almost like the energizer bunny. Those days are gone, for sure, and it's a never ending bummer when you stop and think about it. Some days the limitations are so in your face that you cannot ignore them and carry on. Sorry you're having a couple of those spoonless-hit-the-wall days.

As others have said, please say anything and everything you want to say, choose to say, or need to say.

Remember, you didn't choose this so you have absolutely nothing to feel guilty about. Say this as often as you need to.

Big hugs and love - Barbara

You ain't no wimp! That Thanksgiving feast you threw was the work of an artist, and I don't know how you managed it all. Just look at your gorgeous house which you redecorated this year! I'm only 9 or 10 years older than you, and I can't do half that much--just because I'm too lazy! Love you, Suze!

On 11/30/2010, Linda said ...

You have my ear whenever you need to talk/whine/rant/whatever. Wimpy, you are not! I admire that you do not let the disease get the best of you. When you need to, you rest; and then get on with it. As someone else said, you are informing and setting the example for your readers as your share your life with us. That is invaluable. Thank you, Susan.

I can commiserate. I had such a bad back that I was on crutches or using a cane at age 30. Now I do yoga twice a day, stretching for about 30 minutes each. Has saved my life! I get around better now at 53 than I ever did. I also take Cymbalta, which probably helps some with the pain. That's why I don't crawl around on the floor doing quilts any more. I just can't do it. I don't make plans anymore much. I've never been a social creature. Even stopped doing Meals On Wheels because I didn't know how I'd feel. It's good to vent. Get it out.

Your title should be banished--you are not a wimp! Fibromyalgia is a difficult disease to treat and even more difficult to live with. We have lots of fibro patients at our pain clinic. Some are tremendously helped by medications, others not. It is hit and miss. I know you try to do the very limit and use up all your spoons often. It is a real bummer to have to let this condition take up space in your life! Pressing on and doing things you enjoy despite the pain takes real strength and energy. I hope you feel some of that come back soon.

On 12/01/2010, Emma said ...

Your post made me kind of laugh which sounds awful but...hear me out. I got sick this week (husband gave me a stomach bug...what love!) and what did I do on my day off? I made (to include ironing) binding for a quilt, machine-sewed that binding onto a quilt, cut and ironed and pieced a backing, basted the quilt onto that backing, started quilting that newly-basted quilt, and started hand-sewing the binding down onto the recently bound quilt. On a day when I had a stomach bug and wasn't allowed to eat any food, just drink water and some Fanta. My husband was astounded that I did that much because he just laid around under blankets when he had the same bug.

Fellow wimp here. Vent all you want. It isn't easy living with this disease. I have aged a lot these past 3 years when it's gotten worse. So hard to be always in pain. Soft hugs, love and prayers sent your way...and also spoons!

Susan you're not a wimp, you just don't feel well. I always like the saying "Getting old is not for sissies" how true! But we soldier on. Look at what you've achieved this year, even the last few weeks, entertaining your family to a lavish feast. You've given a homeless dog a loving home not to mention all the Yellow House make-over. Now your body needs a rest and its perfectly alright to give in to that .
Keep cozy.

Quilted on Both Sides Yet!!

696_75346_P

Here's what happens when you let someone write about a quilt who doesn't know a quilt from first base (to paraphrase a favorite saying of my FIL). This is listed on Sears Canada's website and touted as "Intricately quilted on both sides for longer wear." It's a gorgeous quilt, and I'm sure it's sturdy as well. But would someone please tell me how you quilt a quilt on only one side! Below is a link to the actual ad, in case any of you think I'm making this up. I first learned about it on Ami Simms's Facebook page.
Whole Home(R/MD) Solid-coloured Quilt Set - Sears | Sears Canada.

I hate it when ads and commercials talk about stuff, especially quilting, that they don't know anything about. Remember the very first North Tissue quilters who were using humongous knitting needles for quilting? Quilters actually got that commercial changed.

Oh well, speaking of quilting, I have a little baby quilt to bind today. My friend is going to be so happy to finally get it--I hope. I'll post a photo when I'm finished. Have a fine Monday, everyone.

On 11/29/2010, Ubiquitous Musician said ...

Hilarious! How cute that a person would think quilting only affects one side! I guess the needle just skims the fabric...or maybe it doesn't go through at all! :)

On 11/29/2010, Linda said ...

Too funny! AND you are soooo right! My favorite is when I hear someone refer to a quilt as a blanket!! Have fun binding!

On 11/29/2010, Kai said ...

OMG! I thought I was the ONLY one to catch things like that in ads. For me, it's word! I just about lose my mind yelling at the tv when someone advertising jewelry calls it 'jew-le-ry'! WHAT????? Does THAT mean (I screech) that the items making up the piece are JEW-LAS? Noooooo, you morons! They are JEWELS. Arrrrrggghhh! Same with a commercial from some time ago which had a local man declaring, "I want to be YOUR relator." Uhhhhh ...! You are showing REAL ESTATE, Goober. REALTOR, not RE-LA-TOR. Ray just stares at me and shakes his head, mumbling, "They can't HEAR you, Kai!" Who cares? Makes me feel better! LOL! Thank you, Susan! I feel vindicated for my outbursts.

What a hoot! Someone was trying to write an impressive ad without doing their homework - or thinking.

I'm back to borders on DS1's quilt after taking two borders off yesterday (and do my hands feel it). If any borders wave after all this extra work, long may they wave. I have to take this quilt across town tomorrow in order to have it back before Christmas. When will I stop relying on the crisis method??

Happy binding! I look forward to seeing this charming quilt finished and ready for its close-up!

Hugs!

Hey Susan - from someone who worked for Sears Canada for a long while, this is one of their ways of saying it is reversible. They are trying to come up with creative ways to say the same thing - that the coverlets are reversible. As they carry many of the same styles it is a real dilema to come up with cutsey wording. I agree it would probably help if they hired someone who knew what they were talking about. I worked on some website catalogues a few years ago and it is really hard to describe a product and make it unique when you might be writing basically the same description for 10 products that are basically the same! Have fun with your binding - I love doing the binding, it's the layering I hate - grrrr.

On 11/29/2010, AnnieO said ...

I had to laugh about this story---marketers sure don't do enough research on the item they're selling, I guess, only their target! I do remember shaking my head at the toilet paper ad with the knitting needles, just too ridiculous! It's not like quilting is a new technique--it has existed for a few thousand years :)

Thanks for the laughs!

Lazy Morning

Moving very very slowly this morning. Too tired, everything aches, and walking feels like climbing Mt. Everest carrying a ton of bricks.

Sat Skipper

Looks like Skipper has the right idea, huh? Doesn't he look cozy and peaceful? That red print coverlet is supposed to protect my chair from doggie dirt, but Skipper thinks it makes a good cover to snuggle under.

I got the Teddy Bear quilt machine quilted yesterday. Although I am way less than excellent as a machine quilter, I thought that maybe if I did just simple straight lines, it would look ok. The hardest part was the basting. I laid it out on the back porch to spray baste. Of course, getting down on the floor and back up again, which I had to do many times, is really hard for me--but I did it. Got it straight with no wrinkles, and it only took me a couple of hours.

The quilting went well. Although nothing fancy, it looks ok. Then I made the binding. Now all I have to do is bind it and stitch the label on and  it will be ready to deliver. Don't know if I'll get to it today. I should show a photo here of the quilt, but I don't feel like lifting the camera. (The photo of Skipper is a couple of days old.) I'm a real wimp today. I'll photograph the quilt after it's bound.

Maybe I'll just read today. I'm almost finished with a book entitled The God Patent, which sounded like it was going to be really good, but is actually a little lame. I've ordered a copy of True Grit from Amazon. I didn't know that there was a book until I read that the Coen brothers made the new "True Grit" movie from the original book rather than remaking the John Wayne movie. I love good westerns (not Louie L'amour stuff) so I jumped on this one. I'll let you know how I like it. For sure, I'll see the movie a soon as it comes out in a few weeks, starring my man Jeff Bridges as Rooster Cogburn.

To all my friends out there, have a happy and blessed Sunday.

Cheers that you've got the darling little bear quilted!!!!

I've hit a snag on DS1's quilt. The black I carefully cut 1 3/4" and parallel to the selvages stretched like crazy. Silly me went ahead and put the Celtic knot fabric border on before I saw the waving border, so now am taking both out. My dear DH and AMIL are going to the quilt shop that closes at 5p to get more Kona cotton black for me. Darned if I'm going to chance using the other black as the outer border. No way. Dec 1 is the deadline for me to get the quilt to the long arm quilter, too. YIKES!

Hugs!

Hey, I'm a relatively healthy 45-year-old, and I hate crawling around on the floor basting a quilt, too. I want a long arm so bad...In part to quilt the quilts, but in part to avoid the hassle of basting! :-) Maybe that's what YOU need. ha ha! :-) Just trying to help give you excuses to buy one!

On 11/29/2010, Sandra Neel Hutchins said ...

Congratulations on a great finish! Now you need to rest a bit.
As for the quilt that is "quilted on both sides": I had a difficult time explaining to a neighbor ( I was doing a binding on a quilt that her teenage daughter had attempted.), that I really wasn't up to making the binding red on one side of the quilt and blue on the other side. Non quilters don't seem to understand that a quilt is a unit that is quilted and bound as one item, not two separate units somehow glued together. I suppose a binding with different colors on each side of the quilt could be done, but not by me!

On 11/29/2010, Sandra Neel Hutchins said ...

Due to lupus and RA, I can no longer craw around on a floor to baste quilts. But, I have a king size bed that makes the most wonderful basting area. I have one of those basting guns that I use. I just lay the backing, batting, and top together on the bed. Then I lift up a small section of the sandwich at a time and shoot it with the basting gun. After I have done an entire row of basting, I roll that section of the quilt and keep doing that. There is no need to tape anything to the floor, etc. My quilts are very smooth on the front and back with this method. I make really big quilts and my little procedure works fine on all of them. I've never seen this method anywhere, but it works great for me. Sometimes, our small handicaps lead to good discoveries. I love my basting gun, I've been using the same one for about 20 years.

Ahhh, I just love how skipper has melted into your family!
As for spray basting..save your body, get 2 banquet tabes. Target has folding ones with a lite gray top, sometimes on sale for 30-40$?
I dont know how much room you have, maybe keep them in the garage, set em up in there, open the door for ventilation...
It should only take about 10 minutes to spray baste on tables..you will LOVE it!
Maybe Walmart has the tables. I say 2 cause then you can set both up and baste a lap size..
Take care, do some doggie snuggling..
Sincerely,
Gael of "pink-a-Palooza"

Turkey Day Aftermath

Sat Cookbook

Sat Cornbread

After two days of cooking, I was exhausted--but not too exhausted to enjoy the great Thanksgiving gathering here at The Yellow House. Counting me, there were 11 sisters, nieces, nephews, and friends. Oh, and two very excited doggies. The food was plentiful and delicious, and we all became thoroughly stuffed. (No photos of the actual feast itself. I was too busy eating and visiting to think of taking pictures.)

My 5-year-old nephew Reed, along with the little daughters of my niece Buffy's boyfriend, brought lots of energy with them. Sophie and Skipper really enjoyed having the little ones there to give them lots of attention. Skipper took them all out into the back yard and demonstrated his remarkable hole-digging abilities. Sophie just enjoyed all the extra petting.

I spent Black Friday lying around reading, eating leftovers, and watching football. Andy and sister Ramey both came by and helped with the leftovers. But I still have a fridge full of stuff. I think I'm going to make turkey tetrazzini today. I've never made turkey tetrazzini, and I'm not even sure I'm spelling it correctly.

Images
Sat bear quilt But first, I really must see to finishing up the teddy bear baby quilt. The top is finished, of course, and I think I'm going to try my hand at a simple machine-quilting design--a grid or some kind of straight-line quilting. My friend is getting antsy that his friends' baby is going to be drawing social security before I ever get the quilt to him.

I'm a little sad that the autumn holidays are over. But it's time to start thinking about Christmas decorating. By some standards around here, I'm already late. Neighbors across the street have had their decorations up for a couple of weeks now. But I like to take one holiday at a time.

I bought a new Christmas tree--one of those prelighted kind. It's sitting in the hall, still in the box. I'm determined to wait till December is officially here to assemble and decorate it.

Sat Pink bag And oh, in honor of Pink Saturday, here's the beautiful Bloomer Bag I won in Becky's Blog giveaway. I love it so much, I have it hanging on my chest of drawers just so I can look at it for a while before I start to use it.

I hope all of you had wonderful Thanksgiving celebrations with family and friends and felt as lavishly blessed as I do. God is good, isn't he?

One holiday at a time is my speed, too, and there will be no decorating here until DS1's quilt is with the quilter (3 third border sides and outer border to go) and it's December 1st.

I'm considering playing with my Christmas Flower Fairies when DS1's quilt is away being quilted ... after making the binding and the label for his quilt, of course.

Good luck on machine quilting that darling little bear quilt. I look forward to seeing the face you'll embroider on the bear.

Ode to the Turkey

By Susan Ramey Cleveland

Turkey_Joe-Blake Oh scrumptious beast
How fine thou art;
You fill our tummies,
You warm our hearts.

We love to eat you
All roasted and nice.
We return for seconds--
Sometimes twice.

You are delicious,
You barnyard boss,
With cornbread dressing
And cranberry sauce

We add some sides,
Like taters and beans,
A few desserts,
And other things

But you're the king
Of our Thanksgiving feast.
It's you we honor,
Oh scrumptious beast

Turkey Week is Here!

Thanks, everyone, for your comments on the Great Possum Episode. I enjoyed all your critter stories too. Things have been a little quieter here, and the possum has not returned--at least we haven't seen him. I suspect he's avoiding us out of concern for his well being.

Noah Block

I spent some time in the sewing room on Saturday, working on the Noah's Ark Quilt that is slowly coming together to hang in our church nursery. But yesterday, after church I did my grocery shopping for the Thanksgiving dinner that will take place at The Yellow House on Thursday. After lugging everything upstairs and putting it all away, I was so exhausted, I couldn't even take the doggies for a walk. But my spoon drawer is replenished this morning. I'm feeling pretty good and ready to work on the quilt some more.

Joe and Linda are coming today to paint the front door and also to put the second coat of paint on my corner hutch that I bought months ago and have never finished. They were supposed to come on Saturday, but plumbing problems forced them to reschedule.

The big Butterball Turkey is thawing in the refrigerator, and all the ingredients are in place for a fabulous feast. I'm making turkey, dressing, mashed potatoes, gravy, and green beans. My sisters and Andy are bringing dishes as well. Our family has dwindled so over the years, that we'll probably have ten people at the most. But that's ok; I feel blessed to have them.

I hope all of you are planning something special this week as well. And if you're traveling, be safe, my friends. If you're flying, I hope you manage to stay dressed the whole way. And if you're driving, buckle up and no texting. Love you all.

P.S: I'm linking to Judy's Design Wall Monday. It's a great place to go to see a lot of great projects in progress.

I love your nursery quilt! Bright primary colors are perfect for the little ones! I'm hoping to get a quilt made for my church as well. Oh, the projects!! I went shopping Sunday after church too! I'm sure I'll need to make another trip. I host Thanksgiving at my house too. I invite my family as well as my in-laws, that way everyone can see the girls. Have a wonderful Thanksgiving!
Hope you don't have any critters posing as turkeys on Thanksgiving!

The wall quilt for the church nursery is so happy and colorful! Your embroidery is wonderful and the rainbow stripe fabric is just perfect! I'm sure everyone including Mr. and Mrs. Noah will be delighted with it!

Did I ever show you the wall quilt I made for AMIL's office as director of the daycare at church? It's 9 colorful pinwheels, narrow black sashing, and the outer border fabric depicts untied sneakers in all sizes!! you know daycare teachers re-tie little shoes a bazillion times a day! This wall quilt hangs in AMIL's sewing room now.

I'm looking forward to seeing the hutch and the front door!

Have a wonderful Thanksgiving yourself. I hope your spoons last until the food is prepared and you have rest time before the guests arrive.

We're going just next door so won't need to heed your wise advice. As you do, food responsibilities are divided up among AMIL, DH, and myself. I cannot wait!

Hugs!

Playing Possum

Possum3

I bet a lot of you think most of this stuff I write about is pure fiction. Nobody could live in as much drama as I write about, right? Nope, it's all true. Honest it is. And I don't like drama. It makes me nervous, gives me a headache, and uses up way too many spoons. But we had some more last night.

Around 9:00, I let the dogs into the backyard for what I hoped would be their last outing of the night. I had my pajamas on and wanted to turn in early and read. After I let them out, I was puttering around doing all my going-to-bed things like take my meds, make sure the dogs' bowls are full of water, check all the doors to make sure they were locked, etc.

Before I could finish my tasks, both dogs began making a terrible commotion with barking and yelping and the like. I ran out to the back porch to see what was up. A possum was up--up on the fence, avoiding two yiking terriers.

Possum1

The possum was chilling, he didn't seem to be in a hurry to leave, but I knew I had to shut those dogs up. By that time, every dog in the valley, it seemed, had joined in the barkfest. It sounded like the end of the world.

I had to get the possum to leave somehow, I decided. But first, I grabbed my camera off the kitchen table and shot a few pics. I know blog fodder when I see it.

Possum2

After I shot my pics amid the hellatious clamour, I put the camera away and found a stick. If I poke him, I though, he'll jump down and run away. I forgot that possums aren't efficient runners. They'd be more accurately described as waddlers.

I would have thought he would depart when I came near him, but he didn't. I don't know if the dogs had him petrified or if he was just a laid-back possum, but I think I could have reached out and picked him up and he would have been ok with it. But since I didn't want to have to go to the emergency room for a possum bite, I refrained from lifting him. I just poked him, gently, with the stick and finally convinced him to hop down into the yard on the other side of the fence where the dogs couldn't go.

But don't you know that stupid marsupial turned right around and, before I could say goodbye Br'er Possum, slipped right back through the crack between gate and fence post. Back in Dogland. I couldn't have caught Sophie or Skipper then if I had been Wonder Woman. They were like quantum particles--one second they were on the ground beside me, then seemingly without even moving, they were on top of the possum up in the monkey grass.

Stick in hand, I ran to the scene of what I was sure would be possum murder and marsupuial mayhem. Sophie had hold of him and was shaking her head, so I warped her with the stick. All the time, I'm thinking my sister, who has an inexplicable fondness for possums, will kill me if I let my dogs harm this one. I'm also screaming at the top of my lungs things like, "NO! STOP! DROP HIM! DAMMIT!" Like that.

You can perhaps imagine the cocophany. Or can you? Two small dogs screaming, every dog within barking distance barking, a crazy woman running all over the hillside yelling and waving a stick. You won't be surprised when I tell you that my next door neighbor Nolan appeared out of the dark.

"Suzie, Suzie," he said, "get away from the possum. Even if he's unconscious, he can attack you."

Well I didn't believe that. How the hell can an unconscious possum attack anything. That possum was doing what possums under stress the world over do: playing possum. He wasn't about to move, hoping his adversaries would think him deceased and leave him alone.

But Sophie and Skipper aren't the type to be fooled by such foolishness. I, however, was easily able to fool Sophie, without even meaning to.  I reached down and grabbed Skipper, while simultaneously pushing Sophie back with my stick. Something about those actions confused Soph, and she thought I had picked up the possum instead of Skipper.

So she started leaping at me, trying to make me put the possum down. She followed me to the small fenced area right behind the back porch, the area that is fenced separate from the new fenced area. I chunked Skipper in, Sophie followed him, still apparently thinking he was the possum, and I slammed the gate shut on the two of them. Then I went back to inspect the possum.

At first I thought he was a goner. I used the stick to gently rub his back to see if I could get a rise out of him. Nolan continued to warn me away from the dangerous, man-eating possum.

So I backed up, away from the critter, and in a couple of minutes I saw movement. By the flood lights, I could barely tell that it was possum movement. Oh great, I thought. He's probably injured but not dead. What if I have to "put him out of his misery"? Can I do that? I was about to ask Nolan if he had a gun, when the possum rose up, shook himself just a little, and waddled off up the hill.

For the rest of the night, I kept thinking I might find a dead possum in my backyard the next morning. But when morning came, I inspected the backyard before I let the dogs out. To my great relief and happiness, no possum (dead or otherwise) was in evidence. I guess that's one possum that's still thanking his lucky stars he escaped those two little monster.

I so enjoyed your story! I know it must have been such a pain though! I feel your pain as my dog Sarge was skunked right off my back deck last Friday night! Last fall a small woodchuck managed to try and make a home under the hood of my mini-van! Drove with him in there for two days! Sarge was going crazy all night, wanting to go in the garage. He was scratching the side of my van, so finally I lift the hood and there he was!! Even had a little burn spot in his fur from the engine! I'm like of all the places an animal could hang out, that was THE place!! Too funny!

I understand your dilemma quite well. One got under my little shed in the backyard and decided to stay a few days with me. I did everything to get it out. I was afraid he was going come at me. I finally just left him alone, and one day he was gone.

Oh my, I agree with your neighbor.......you got way too close to that critter. I would have been a screaming maniac trying to get those dogs away from the opossum.
I may have posted this before,......seems like I did......my Mom let her Yorkie outside during the day. When she didn't return she went outside and found a raccoon on top of her. She reached for her dog and was attacked by the raccoon. They dropped the dog off at the vets on the way to the ER. They couldn't stitch her hands because of it being an animal bite and she had to have the whole series of rabies shots. Stay away from those wild ones. Yorkie survived as well.

So much excitement when all you wanted was an early night! At least no one was harmed, and hope your nerves didn't use up a lot of spoons :) We have possums often and the other week our neighbor found one INSIDE his lawnmower, when he lifted to engine cover to find the reason that it wouldn't start. They tracked it to the other neighbor's yard. When he again went to start his mower, ANOTHER possum jumped out of the engine cover! Amazing.

Too funny -- and all too familiar. My dogs are about the same size as yours and our fence about as high. I get up very early so the dogs are out at 3:00 a.m. to do their business. We have had a possum on our fence several times over the past several months . I tried everything to get him down. He just looked at me like I was the one who was crazy. The only thing that worked was putting the hose on jet stream and aiming it at him. I was on the other side of the pool when spraying him so I know the pressure wasn't that intense but I had tried everything else to get him down and have the dogs quiet down. I was just praying like crazy that he wouldn't jump at me instead of the way I wanted him to jump! I had to get rid of him before the neighbors started stoning me for the time of night it was. Great pictures -- I never thought of getting my camera when it was happening.

On 11/22/2010, Ramey said ...

Poor Possum! What could he have been thinking? Trying to visit? Just acting a fool? There must have been something edible out there that he was after. Tell him to come to my house; the cats tolerate possums with a sort of resigned fatalism. "if a possum wants my food, the possum's gonna get the food, and I can't do nuthin' about it."

I wish I could get some good photos of my possums. Every time I appear with a camera, they stare at me with eyeballs aglow, and all I see in the picture are two irridescent orbs.

How scary - your little dogs are good protectors! I live pretty much in the middle of a good-sized city, - in Nebraska, and twice I've seen a possum just strolling through my back yard, early, early in the morning before sunup. Makes me wonder where they spend their days as I'm out in my yard puttering around in my flower beds! I guess I would just as soon not know. Not the cutest sort of creature, are they?

What a story! I would have freaked out. I was at camp once as a kid, and I can remember hearing the possums or the raccoons fighting, I could never sleep.

On 12/17/2012, Ernie said ...

Man, this has happened to us several times, exactly like you described! Though my dog was jumping on the side of the fence and happened to grab the tail that was swishing back and forth and pulled it down into our yard! Our dog did the same thing--shaking it and all, but I used a garden hose to spray our dog away from it and finally got her to go inside. I opened the gate and like you said, the next AM, it was gone--no dead body.

My first dog was much more rough with an oppossum and did injure it so that there was blood and all. Had to call animal control to get it out from under the bushes. It probably died or was put down since it had a big stomach wound.

I'm looking for ways to prevent them from walking on our fence. They come across from neighbor's fences onto our vinyl fence. We tried spikes but that didn't work. I'm looking for this rolling pin device you put on top of your fence and then they can't walk there--have you seen such a thing? I had a brochure once on it but now I cant find it. Was wondering if anyone suggested such a device to you.

Thanks! We just had another occurrence last night so I'm determined to figure this out.

A Spoonie Morning

Pinnk5

Good Friday, everyone. The doggies and I didn't sleep very well last night. Skipper had an itch and kept me and Sophie awake scratching most of the night. I got up finally at about 3:30 and gave him his meds, and he finally settled down. He seems fine this morning, but now I have a "tummy thing."

Still in my jammies and feeling like I just want to go back to bed. Those pillows (above) look awfully inviting, don't they? But I won't. I've got Book Club at the library this afternoon, and don't want to miss. Maybe a hot, soaky bath instead will perk me up.

But before I go, I want to share this beautiful and inspiration song I discovered yesterday. I've been playing it often since yesterday. Hope you enjoy it as much as I do.

Dig It!

Skipper1

One miniature fox terrier for sale! Cheap. Just kidding. I wouldn't take anything for my Skipper, but I'm beginning to understand just a little why he might have been making his way in world alone when my friends found him. That dog is a full-time job almost.

Skipper2

This morning, I was checking my email and I kept hearing him doing his high-pitched bark thing out back. I figured I'd better go try to quiet him down, lest the sensitive young man who lives upstairs in Nolan's house next door pitches a hissy fit. When I got to the back yard, this is what I found. Skipper was well on his way to China. Every now and then, he would stop digging and bark at the hole. I couldn't see a thing except dirt and rocks, and I told him so. But he insisted there was something down there, and he meant to have it. Dig dig dig dig dig dig dig.

I tried and tried to distract him from his task. Sophie just stood and watched with an expression on her fact that said, "Idiot." Finally I got him away long enough to shove dirt back in the hole and drag a 50 pound bag of pine bark mulch over the site. He sniffed around the bag a little and then went off up in the wooded area. I thought the problem was solved. I decided I'd come back later and repair the hole more efficiently. I went back to my email.

In a while, I looked out back again, and here's what I saw:

Skipper3

The Skipster had demolished the bag of mulch and uncovered his hole. He was on his way to China again. He was not, however, barking. So I left him alone and let him dig. He finally gave up and came inside. I suppose the scent of China lost its charm for him. Now I have to give him a bath. And I have a total mess, along with the hole, in my back yard to repair.

Skipper4

Thank you, Kris, for your cake order. Please e-mail me at suscleve@aol.com and let me know when you want your cake and I'll meet you at the church. Love you. Give your mama a hug for me, please.

I hope those of you who wanted the recipe can get to it now. Sorry that link was broken. I fixed it, I think.

He is VERY persistent! But Debra is right - he probably DID dig his way out of his former yard. Looks as tho' you may need more than mulch to keep that cutie in! (And if he comes inside barking in Chinese - uh-oh! - he MADE it to China & back! LOL!)

I have laughed until I have tears in my eyes. That was so funny. One thing's for sure, you're not lacking for entertainment with Skipper around!! I'd take him in a heartbeat! He's got spunk!!!

On 11/18/2010, Barbara Anne said ...

How funny! That is, unless he digs his way out of your yard, too. Does Skipper now have a collar that has his name and address on it or perhaps one of those ID chips?

Don't you wish you could bottle Skipper's energy?!

Sensible Sophie was probably looking as only a big sister can look at an irritating little brother!

Never a dull moment...

Skipper is so cute!!! Reminds me of the concrete figure I saw a couple of weeks ago at Homestead Hollow.
All you see is the backside of the dog stuck up in the air and where his head should be looks like it is underground. You do have your hands full. We have a part rat terrier and she stays in trouble a lot. Hope you have a wonderful weekend.

Susan, I know how you feel! We got a beagle mix at the shelter on Wednesday. She dug her way out of the fence on Thursday (the neighbor finally caught her). I came home today from errands and she was out again! I finally have put her in my garage until my husband gets home from hunting. I will just walk her every few hours. You gotta love them!

Hummers for the Holidays

Exps32005_TH952496D33D

UPDATE: I have fixed the second link. Both "Hummingbird Cakes" in the first graph and "HERE" at the bottom should work now. Sorry for the inconvenience. --Susan

It's not like I don't have enough to do, but there's one more thing I want to do this holiday season. I'm making Hummingbird Cakes and selling them. All proceeds will go to local charities that feed and clothe homeless and needy people. There is just so much trouble and suffering going on these days, and I've been wanting to do something. This is something I can do.

Last year, I donated all Vann's clothes (and there were boxes and boxes of them) to local charities. But I've run out of things to donate this year.

My three-layer hummingbird cake has become very popular around here in the past couple of years. Although not cheap to bake, it's fairly easy; and it tastes great.

I'll be selling these scrumptious confections for $30 each. Every cent will go to feed the homeless and needy this holiday season. I will not deduct for ingredients or delivery charges.

If you are within driving distance, I can deliver a cake to you. I don't think they would ship too well, so this is going to be strictly local. Sorry. If you aren't local, and want a cake, you can bake your own though. It's really an easy recipe, and you can find it HERE.

I'll cut off orders only when I've received as many as I think I can bake--or on December 20, whichever comes first. If you'd like to order a cake, leave a note here and tell me when you'd like your cake delivered--anytime before Christmas. Then I'll e-mail you my mailing address so that you can mail me a check.

NOTE: This cake freezes well.

***

Looks like I'm not the only one with a ton of UFOs. Thanks for all your responses, and for your enthusiasm for the challenge. I'll create us a blog button and make up a few bendable rules, and we'll get started after the holidays. At least with the challenge. You're welcome to get started on your UFOs right away. That's what I'm doing.

What an excellent idea for a way to contribute to local charities. I cannot drive from Virginia as it's a bit far to come for even such a delicious looking and worthy cake!

I think I will give your recipe a try if I can get to it.

Since I should have made DS1's quilt about 13 years ago and did make one block back then, I suppose this is the ultimate UFO. Now there are 16 completed blocks and the block units for the rest are already made! DS1 says a quilt made 13 years ago wouldn't have survived the roommates he had in those years. Isn't he kind?!

Hugs!

I Got Nothing--But UFOs

It's Tuesday, and I haven't published a blog post since Pink Saturday. I'm going through a sparse period here, storywise. The dogs haven't done anything interesting, I haven't done much project work. No interesting family or friend news. Nothing.

Autumn-rain

It has been raining. All day yesterday, last night, and this morning, the wet stuff came down. The sun is fighting the clouds now. Maybe we'll have sunshine by afternoon.

UFO Runner I'm so frustrated with my UFOs. I just want to chunk them and start over. I feel so disorganized. You know how I set a goal for 2010 or getting my house in order, decluttered, and prettied up? Well 2011 is going to be The Year of UFO Busting. I'm giving fair warning to all my quilting, sewing, knitting, and crochet projects that are now hiding in bags, drawers, and closets. By the end of next year, you will all either be finished, or a new home will be found for you. And I am NOT going to start another project until that goal is realized.

The small quilt/table runner at right is one of my many many many many UFOs. I started machine quilting it and made a mess. So I tossed it aside rather than pulling out the stitches and fixing my mess.

UFO Scarf The knitted scarf at left is finished; and I even started a matching hat, which is finished all but binding off.

The single-crochet cat afghan below has been in the works for ten years or more.

  UFO Cats

And that's only a tiny smidgen of all the unfinished projects I have haunting my thoughts and dreams. It's time to take action, don't you think?

What about a 2011 UFO Challenge? Anybody up for joining me? We had one a few years ago at my guild, just for quilting projects. I think I won for  the longest list of UFOs, of which I finished not a single one, as I recall.

If you have a long list of UFOs like I do, maybe you'd like to join me in a UFO Busting Challenge in 2011. It'll be fun. We'll have prizes: e.g., most UFOs, most percentage finished, first to complete her list, etc. Think about it, and I'll start sign ups after the holidays. Nobody wants to think about this now, I'm sure.

So, well, as it turned out, I did have a little to talk about. But now Sophie and Skipper are pitching a fit for a walk. They missed their walk yesterday because of the rain. So see you later.

I love your tablerunner! It reminds me of rainbow ice cream sherbet and that was always what I chose for my birthday parties when I was growing up.

As you get cozy to watch TV you could snip, pick some stitches out for 15 minutes each night and shrea, shrea, you'd be finished in no time! Perhaps you have a quilting buddy there who will pick the stitches out in exchange for a cake, cookies, or a little something else??

Sign me up for that 2011 challenge to finish UFOs. I need to at least make a dent in my list. It's almost Christmas time again and the borders still aren't on my QuiltSmart Lone Star. It is glorious (if I do say so myself), so why isn't it finished? There are probably 20 other UFOs keeping it company as well as 3 counted cross stitch projects I abandoned in 1992.

Scoot over, girlfriend, you've got company on this bench!

Hugs!

hello Susan!
I'm in for UFO busting - although I have to confess that I've been working on mine for a few weeks - and slowly but surely I am making progress - or at least I was until my sewing machine started playing up and had to go in for a service. I feel kind of virtuous, but oh I do miss the thrill of starting something new....

Count me in!! I was thinking the other day about how I really should finish my nephew's baby quilt. I started it in 1993 when he was born and since he graduates next May, I thought it might make a good high school graduation gift!!! LOL

Wow! That cat afghan (after you finish it!) would make a great giveaway prize. But I'd never win it--I almost never win in drawings. I only hope this blamed novel is finished before 2011 ends. - JR

On 11/16/2010, Kai said ...

Hello. My name is Kai & I am a weirdo. I came to this meeting of UFOs Anonymous to admit something even MORE shameful (by far) than having lots of unfinished projects. You see, I am a charter member of AV Anonymous. That would be Anal Virgos Anon. We not only finish EVERYTHING, and finish them QUICKLY, but we make things - gasp - in multiples, assembly line style. OH, THE SHAME OF IT! But the truth (so I hear) will set you (or me or anyone) free. And I am TIRED of making three or four million this or that crafts at a time, giving away a scanty 5 or 6 of them, THEN (neatly, mind you) storing them in the closet of my craft room where they remain for - well - forever. So, while I CAN'T join you, lil' Susan, in YOUR UFO-finishing endeavor, I do sympathize AND support you because we ALL have our little secret stashes. Yours are unfinished - mine are - sigh - just plain ridiculous! (By the way, do you know of anyone who may want about 100 clay eggyolk faces made - oh - about 8 YEARS ago? BWAHAHAHAHA ... you think I'm KIDDING, don't you? I really DO have those.)

On 11/16/2010, rose said ...

I'd like to say that I could do this, but, as my children say,"it ain't gonna happen". Did you know that there is actually a place that takes unfinished projects and finishes them for charity? I wonder where that is???? Perhaps someone reading will know. I kind of like that idea.

On 11/16/2010, Mama Pea said ...

I am up for it. I have been trying to UFO bust this year, too. I have done okay, but I have also started more projects! So, I need to focus on this again next year. Pat Sloan has been posting UFO busting tips for the last few weeks. You can check those out on her blog! They are pretty good steps to take, I think!

On 11/16/2010, Jen said ...

I'm a beginning quilter, so not only am I increasing my stash but I'm increasing my UFOs! I seem to get bored right around adding borders time. If I make it through borders, then I definitely abandon it before I make the sandwich! You did such a great job on your house this last year that I want to join in. I'll look around for some UFOs. I'm sure I have a few I've forgotten about. Or blocked from my memory. ;)

On 11/16/2010, Sharon said ...

Susan - A few years ago,I actually made a list of all the quilting UFOs I had - something like 25 tops were hanging in the closet, with backings all ready prepared for them, hanging with them. I had them listed by year, and I have one more from 2006 to finish, then I'll move to 2007. I mainly hand-quilt, so a few years ago I realized this wasn't going to work, so began machine-quilting some of the lap-sized ones, and sent the bigger ones out to a longarmer. I WILL succeed in this!.

But - - no more new projects? That wouldn't be fun! I decided that in order to conquer this problem, as I made a new top I would get it finished up in a more timely manner, and that way the pile diminishes. Finish an older one, finish the new one.

One way to have the fun of making more tops is to do QOVs, that are then handed over to someone else to longarm quilt - working on two of those at the present.

We won't talk about my cross-stitch Santa (on 22-ct. linen) that is a 10-year project about 2/3 done)!

On 11/16/2010, Sandra Neel Hutchins said ...

I love that cat afghan! Enjoy getting those UFO's done. Sorry that I can't join you because I make a quilt start to finish before I ever go on to the next one. I have finished some UFO's that belonged to long ago dead women. I enjoyed bringing their projects that they left behind to a finish. I suppose that made me want to always get my quilts done before I start on the next one.

On 11/16/2010, Marge Davies said ...

I will join in even though I don't have a blog. I only have about 6 UFO but I also have 2 quilt kits that I haven't even started. I'm pretty good about finishing projects until I make a mistake then I wad them up and put them in a box and forget about them.
Maybe if I really look I will find more.
Marge

Hi Susan ~ I was just thinking last week that I needed to make a list of what needs doing and make 2011 the year that it all gets done! I have a lot of UFO's! One is an Irish Hiking Scarf that I actually gave to my daughter two Christmases ago...wrapped it up with the needles in the gift and told her I'd finish it soon. She recently asked if I'd have it ready for her to wear this winter. How embarrassing! I promised I would! I'd love to join your UFO group.

Pink Saturday, Etc.

Frontofpatternpic_thumb16 Lucky me again! I won this gorgeous Bloomer Bag that Becky was offering in her blog giveaway at Sweet Cottage Dreams. Thanks so much, Becky.

I've been very lucky in drawings lately and scored some beautiful things. I love this bag. There's a pattern if you're interested in making yourself or someone else one. Just go to Becky's blog to learn more.

In honor of Pink Saturday, below are a few photos that I shot this morning around The Yellow House.

Yesterday, while I should have been working in the sewing room, I made a trip to a favorite thrift store. Below are a few of the treasures I found there.

  Thrift2

I just could not resist these red poppie tumblers. Won't they be great for tea or lemonade next summer?--although I plan to use them before then.

I'm going to fill the big red basket with some of the large pine cones that fall from a tree in my back yard. Maybe I'll tie a pretty bow on the basket handle, then I'm going to place the basket on my red bistro table on the front porch as part of my holiday decorations.

Thrift1

Thrift3
Of course I had to have this pretty plate to add to the blue-and-white plate wall collection in my guest bedroom.

Thrift4
A sweet little mirror, crowned with flourishes and cheribs (or as a friend of mine calls them, "little naked babies.")

Happy Pink Saturday, everyone.

Is anyone besides me still adding home made Christmas gifts to your to do list??? I should have thought of these things in July. Am I crazy???
