UPDATE: I have fixed the second link. Both "Hummingbird Cakes" in the first graph and "HERE" at the bottom should work now. Sorry for the inconvenience. --Susan
It's not like I don't have enough to do, but there's one more thing I want to do this holiday season. I'm making Hummingbird Cakes and selling them. All proceeds will go to local charities that feed and clothe homeless and needy people. There is just so much trouble and suffering going on these days, and I've been wanting to do something. This is something I can do.
Last year, I donated all Vann's clothes (and there were boxes and boxes of them) to local charities. But I've run out of things to donate this year.
My three-layer hummingbird cake has become very popular around here in the past couple of years. Although not cheap to bake, it's fairly easy; and it tastes great.
I'll be selling these scrumptious confections for $30 each. Every cent will go to feed the homeless and needy this holiday season. I will not deduct for ingredients or delivery charges.
If you are within driving distance, I can deliver a cake to you. I don't think they would ship too well, so this is going to be strictly local. Sorry. If you aren't local, and want a cake, you can bake your own though. It's really an easy recipe, and you can find it HERE.
I'll cut off orders only when I've received as many as I think I can bake--or on December 20, whichever comes first. If you'd like to order a cake, leave a note here and tell me when you'd like your cake delivered--anytime before Christmas. Then I'll e-mail you my mailing address so that you can mail me a check.
NOTE: This cake freezes well.

Looks like I'm not the only one with a ton of UFOs. Thanks for all your responses, and for your enthusiasm for the challenge. I'll create us a blog button and make up a few bendable rules, and we'll get started after the holidays. At least with the challenge. You're welcome to get started on your UFOs right away. That's what I'm doing.

Sigh ... well, when I get to visit you (notice my wishful thinking - WHEN - LOL) maybe you will make one of those delicious-looking cakes & I can finally taste it! I'm SO not a good baker except for my few tried and true old favorite recipes. What you plan to do is WONDERFUL, and you are going to bless SO MANY PEOPLE with your generosity! I LOVE YOU!

You are so sweet and generous! I know this will be greatly appreciated. There is a lot of suffering in the world. And not enough people like you to fix what ails the masses. CM tonight!

What an excellent idea for a way to contribute to local charities. I cannot drive from Virginia as it's a bit far to come for even such a delicious looking and worthy cake!
I think I will give your recipe a try if I can get to it.
Since I should have made DS1's quilt about 13 years ago and did make one block back then, I suppose this is the ultimate UFO. Now there are 16 completed blocks and the block units for the rest are already made! DS1 says a quilt made 13 years ago wouldn't have survived the roommates he had in those years. Isn't he kind?!
Hugs!

Oh Susan.....what a wonderful thing to do!! By the time your cake reached me in Ca. it would be a mess. Please, email me your address and I will send a check to you and you can donate it to the charity of your choice. I'm feeling really burned out from all the assistance I give my dad and I have not even thought of giving to others lately. This is an easy way for me to help. (I wouldn't normally send a stranger a check..but reading all the comments posted over the past year on your blog you are held in high regard by many ladies.) Oh, I do have one request. Please send me the recipe for the Humming Bird cake. Your link is not working. Pat McDonald

I will admire the cake from here! I read back and 625 calories--half from fat--it's gotta be good! I came across your Irish quilt in a book the other day and thought of you.
