Here's One for Oprah

A&J Today my handsome grandson Jesse becomes a man; it's his 21st birthday. (That's him and his mom Andy in the photo.) Here's what a man does.

For Christmas I bought him a fancy cell phone that can do everything except bake brownies (no app for that). It was expensive, but it was Christmas. This is one time that I'm glad that a cute salesman talked me into purchasing an insurance policy on the phone. Well, he really didn't have to talk a lot. I was aware that Jesse's history with cell phones isn't without incident--a couple have landed in the laundry, one in the swimming pool. I think he might have run over one with his dune buggy. But you're not going to believe this.

You've heard it said that one should not text and drive at the same time, right? But that's not the only thing one shouldn't do while texting. Mr. Jesse was taking a tinkle and texting at the same time. Guess where the phone ended up. Right.

But the day is saved by that insurance policy. Instead of having to pay an arm and a leg to replace his phone, we'll only have to pay a couple of toes and a finger.

Happy Birthday, Jaybird. I guess you know what you're getting from me and Sophie for your birthday.

Happy Birthday to your handsome grandson! His latest incident w/his phone doesn't surprise me one little bit (LOL), the big nut! Oh and great decision on letting someone else do all that yard work! I'm like you ... want a gorgeous yard, but don't want to be the one to bring it to that point. Happy day :)

Susan, thanks for the giggle. He is not alone. I have washed multiple phones, mp3 players, and other small electronic gadgets that get left in pockets and thrown in the laundry pile. One of our family cell phones is at the bottom of a lake. A brand new, just purchased watch is probably somewhere in the Pacific Ocean as it was dropped in the American River just hours after it's purchase. Insurance on these gadgets is a necessity in our household.

Happy Birthday, Jesse! Here's a second for the Hollywood screen test.

I so agree that Andy looks like his sister rather than his mother! Great genes in the family!!

Years ago I decreed that what was in pockets was asking to be washed and that owners needed to empty their own pockets before or while undressing.

Thanks for the chuckle! Hugs!

Forget Yesterday!

Martinique-bundle-450

Sophia-Elegant-bundle-200

Sophia-Sophisticated-bundle-200 I haven't done any sewing for such a long time that I felt a need for a fabric fix this morning. So I did some fabric surfing on the web. Look at the pretty new lines I found.

I'm not ordering them, just a little fabricaholic daydreaming to cheer me up. The condition of my fabric stash is really ridiculous.

I'm just not buying any more fabric until I either use or give away a bunch of what I already have. This time I mean it. Really I do.

I'm just a little bit blue today. I didn't get one thing done yesterday that I had planned to do. And today isn't looking promising either.

It all started out in the front yard. My order of 50 bales of pine straw for mulching was delivered yesterday. Last year, I helped Vann spread pine straw, and had no idea that I couldn't do the whole thing by myself this year.

Paul had told me that I needed to treat the natural area with Roundup before spreading the straw. So I got out the sprayer, read the directions on the Roundup, and mixed the solution in the sprayer. It's one of those sprayers that you pump to bring the solution up into the tube then pull a trigger on the end of the hose to spray. Everything went fine except the spraying part. After one, maybe one and a half, sprays, I would have to pump again. I got so tired dragging 2 gallons of spray all over the hillside and pumping every 15 seconds that I finally gave up and called Joe, the male partner of the couple that cleans my house every two weeks. He said he'd be happy to take care of the mulching for me.

I came in and took an 800 mg ibuprofen for the pain I had caused in my back and a decongestant for the congestion that being outside had caused. I read for a little while but never really got off the couch except to go back and forth to the washer/dryer folding laundry. The day wasn't exactly a bust, but it sure didn't turn out as I had planned. I never even got close to the office to straighten up in there as I had planned.

But I'm going there now to see what I can get into. Joe is coming tomorrow to spread the straw. I don't plan to touch the stuff myself. I never have liked yard work and gardening, even when I was capable of doing it. I'm the type of person who dreams of having the kind of landscaping and outdoor decor shown in the photos below but is averse to the idea of doing the work it takes to get there--not to mention not having the first idea about what kind of work to do to get there.

36199_0_8-6038-traditional-

15963_0_8-8281-traditional-landscape

I think God probably made me for indoor work. After all, one can't be good at everything. At least this one can't.

Hmmm, I was just wondering where I could get some purdy "little girl" fabric to use on some homemade burp clothes (cloth diapers). Silly of me to think I had to hit the remnant bin at the fabric store, ay? Love you

On 03/30/2010, Barbara Anne said ...

How wise of you to understand you cannot be good at everything. You're already a wiz at so many wonderful skills that it's okay if you don't do your own gardening

Perhaps you should look into planting only what is native to your area and will reseed itself year after year I recently read an article written by a life-long gardener who, as she reached her elder years, chose to limit her plantings so her garden took care of itself to a great extent. She said in addition to native plants, she decided to plant only a very few types of flower but more of each type. She also grouped plants by the kind of care they needed. She grew no delicate or fussy plants.
Perhaps Joe can transform your garden along these lines and you'll need his help only occasionally?

Love the fabrics, but I also am not buying fabrics, except perhaps rarely if I have nothing that blends well... and that's unlikely!! My stash is large.

Hugs!

I'm not cut out for the outside either, fortunately my daughter loves to be outside and her husband helps her, so they do almost all of the yard work. I help a little in the flower beds, and I do mean "a little" and the granddaughters like to plant flowers. She mainly enjoys the cleaning, not the flowers.
I'm not as fast or as strong as I once was, but I agree, it is hard not to be able to do all you want to.

We always think that we have to be good at everything - glad you wised up before you did some damage to yourself. I love that first garden picture - can picture myself sitting out there drinking that pot of tea with a good book or some easy stitching. I'm looking forward to getting my veggies planted but not the preparatory work - but it'll be a good month before the soil is ready in this part of Canada.

Getting older ain't for sissies! I used to plant annuals (impatiens, begonias, etc) every year, but finally had to give up. It was too embarrassing to think the neighbors were watching me attempting to stand up after all that squatting---no matter how hard I tried, I could do no better than a 90 degree angle. Pathetic! Now I hire someone to do the dirty work. I do take credit however, & say "thank you" if someone compliments my garden!

I like your pictures of outdoor living. I've always wanted an outdoor living room. The Pottery Barn catalog always shows such beautiful outdoor scenes and they make it look so easy (and expensive!). They must be intended for people in sunny climates. I can't imagine always pulling all that furniture in and out of the garage.

Sweet Sunday

Plaque

I hope every one of you had as fine a Palm Sunday as I did. First I was surprised to wake up feeling pretty good after a Saturday of painting. I feared I would not be able to get out of bed, but I really felt better than I do most mornings when I wake up. Maybe all that reaching and bending and stooping and climbing were good for me.

I attended church and heard a wonderful and inspiring Easter cantata performed by our talented choir. I did fine until they broke into a chorus of "Because He Lives," which always brings on the tears. This time too.

When I returned home, Sophie and Andy were waiting for me. Andy and I enjoyed a bowl of Santa Fe soup and then watched "Blind Side." I can't recommend this movie strongly enough. What makes it so neat is that it's based on a true story about a family who opened their home to a homeless boy and made him part of their family. Watch it. It will make you proud to be a human, unlike many things we see these days.

Last night, I watched a new tv movie on the LMN channel entitled "Amish Grace," another winner. It was based on the incident several years ago when a gunmen opened fire on a group of Amish school children in their one-room school house. This movie is a testament to the miracle of forgiveness. I recommend it too.

After a Sunday of rest, however, I have to get back to work today. I've learned to set smallish goals, though. Today's small goal is to give the bookcases in the newly painted office a good coat of Old English Lemon Oil. I think that will perk them up considerably.

It's a good day for soup here... very darkish/glooy looking, a high wind expected before the rain begins later. hmmm, I have a big package of chicken; perhaps I'll make soup of some of it. Haven't had southwestern style for awhile, hmmm. Thank you for the suggestion.

Blessings!

Clean and Green

Sage Mosaic My office walls are now a beautiful shade of sage green--and I can hardly move. I'm glad I did it, but I don't think I'll do it again. I will hire someone to paint the rest of the house.

Anyway, all I have to do now is arrange the furniture, put the books back on the shelves, hang pictures, and straighten up everything, and I'll have a brand new office/study/computer room.

As you might have discerned, two days of resting my back made a lot of difference. I felt good enough this morning to tackle the painting job. Right now, I'm sore all over from the painting, including my back, legs, arms, neck, and even feet. I had a nice long soak in a hot bath, and I'm hoping that and a good night's rest will take care of the soreness.

As soon as the room is all put back together, I'll post photos.

I haven't decided what my next project will be in my extreme home makeover. My sewing room needs organizing badly. And I would like to get someone working on painting the living room, dining room, kitchen, master bedroom. foyer, and stairwell. I've picked my color family for those rooms. It will be a nice warm beige/tan. Something like the color swatches below.

I hope everyone is having a great weekend. Spring was in the air around here today. Sunny and windy with temps around 70 degrees. Storms are moving in tonight, but that's just part of springtime in Alabama.

Toora Loora Loora

800px-Greencastle_County_Down
Greencastle in County Down, Northern Ireland

Well, it looks like I'm a Northern Ireland girl. Some genealogical evidence my sister found suggests that our ancestor, James Edward Miskelley (1720-1803) migrated to York, South Carolina (the county to which we've traced our Miskelley line) in 1767 aboard the ship Hillsborough from either County Atrim or County Down. Edward was my great great great great grandfather. I've been looking for passenger lists for the Hillsborough, this morning, but so far haven't found the correct one.

Dunluce_Castle_County_Antrim_Ireland
Dunluce Castle, County Atrim, Northern Ireland

I have plenty of time to research ancestors and castles and what-have-you. My daughter Andy has said that in order for my back to improve, I must "lay around lay around lay around." I'm really really trying to do that, but it isn't easy. Oh, I have nothing against laying around, there are just other things I'd rather be doing right now--like painting, organizing, and all that good stuff.

I learned that the doctor that I had planned to see does not do backs. So I've made an appointment with the orthopedic surgeon who has done all my surgeries (shoulder, cervical spine, and knee). He's a great doctor; the problem is, it takes a while to get an appointment. I'll see him on April 8.

Thanks to everyone who made suggestions about what to do with the backs of my shelves. I loved all the suggestions. In the end, I'm probably going to decide to leave the shelves plain in order to show up whatever is sitting on the shelves.

While thinking about Ireland, I remembered this lullaby (I think it's just called "An Irish Lullaby") that my mama or somebody used to sing. Maybe my grandma. I've always known it, though. I sang it to my babies too. Did you (do you) sing lullabys to your babies? If so, what do you sing?

Over in Killarney,

Many years ago,

My mother sang a song to me

In words so soft and low.

Just a simple little ditty,

In her good old Irish way,

And I'd give the world if she could sing

That song to me today.

Too-ra-loo-ra-loo-ra,

Too-ra-loo-ra-li,

Too-ra-loo-ra-loo-ra,

Hush, now don't you cry!

Too-ra-loo-ra-loo-ra,

Too-ra-loo-ra-li,

Too-ra-loo-ra-loo-ra,

That's an Irish lullaby.

I want to research my family history one day. Not sure when I will get the chance though.

The lullaby that my grandmother sang to my mother, my mother sang to me and I sang to my kids was...

Rock a bye your baby
with a Dixie melody
soft and low
just as though
you had me on your knee

A million baby kisses
I'll deliver
as soon as they play that
Swanee River

So Rock a bye
your rock a bye baby
with a Dixie Melody

I'm not sure those are the actual words of the song, but that is how my grandmother sang it, and my mom, so that is how I sang it. :)

I sang the Beatles' song, "I WILL" to my daughter before she was born and for years after. I wanted her to know that even before I ever saw her, I loved her with all my heart.

Who knows how long I've loved you.
You know I love you still.
Will I wait a lonely lifetime?
If you want me to, I will.

For if I ever saw you,
I didn't catch your name.
But it never really mattered.
I will always feel the same.

Love you forever and forever!
Love you with all my heart.
Love you whenever we're together,
Love you when we're apart.

And if I ever find you,
Your song will fill the air!
Sing it loud so I can hear you!
Make it easy to be near you!
For the things you do endear you to me!
Ah, you know I will! I will!

Incidentally, I ALWAYS get teary-eyed when I hear Too-ra-loo-ra-loo-ra! I 'see' lil' Barry Fitzgerald greeting his 90+ year old mom while Bing Crosby hums the song in the background! Sigh ...

My grandbaby Reed's favorite was "Uncle Joe"

Would you like to go to meetin',
Uncle Joe, Uncle Joe
Would you like to go to meetin',
Uncle Joe, Uncle Joe
Would you like to go to meetin',
Uncle Joe, Uncle Joe?
Don't mind the weather when the wind
don't blow.

It's much longer with several verses and a chorus.

What an interesting way to spend required down time! Hope you can locate the passenger list that has your g-g-g-g-grandfather's name on it.

I'm glad you're on the track of a doctor who can help you or perhaps direct you to treatment or another doctor who can help relieve your pain. Gentle hugs!

The song I sang to our sons was from Peter Pan, and starts
"Once upon a time and long ago,
I heard someone singing soft and low.
Now when day is done and night draws near,
I recall the song I used to hear."

It's a piece I had during piano lessons that were inflicted on me as a child. Sadly, I never enjoyed the lessons.

Hope you feel lots better soon.

More hugs!

Happy Birthday, LBJ!

Lori

Dinner out with my WOW (Women of Worship) group last night to celebrate my beautiful friend Lori's birthday (which is today) was lots of fun. We dined at Stone's Throw at Mt. Laurel (for those of you who live in the Birmingham/Shelby Country area), a new restaurant opened recently by our friend Veronica's daughter and SIL. The food was excellent! I had shrimp and grits. After dinner, we enjoyed a birthday cake (an amazing chocolate concoction) supplied by Bynum. What a night. What a blessing to have such wonderful friends.

I came to a decision this morning while cleaning out the refrigerator and the freezer in the basement. I'm donating them both to a local food pantry charity, which is supposed to pick them up today. Cleaning them out was very difficult. My back has finally become so bad that each and every movement is torture. I've thought I could tough it out till it gets better, but that's not happening. So I'm putting a call in to a doctor that many of my friends have used. She's also a friend and fellow church member.

All the doctors I've been to so far for this problem (degenerative disk disease) says there's nothing that can be done. But I've decided not to settle for that answer. I'm going to keep searching. If any of you have this problem and have found an answer, I'd love suggestions. I've tried exercise, chiropractor, and muscle relaxers. None of that has helped, and in fact exercise and chiropractor seemed to make the pain worse.

I don't think I'll be doing any painting today--or anything else that requires much use of my back. Maybe I'll just read. I have a new selection downloaded on my Kindle, The Heart-Shaped Box by Joe Hill. And there's knitting to be knitted and more episodes of "Castle" to watch. (I just discovered this series about a mystery writer guy and a lady cop who team up to solve murders. It's great.) But first I do have to go get Sophie some Cesar dog food. In yesterday's grocery shopping, I completely forgot to get it, and she isn't speaking to me until I make amends for my error.

Still thinking of whether to paper the backs of my hutch shelves. I'm leaning toward leaving them as they are. But I have been surfing websites. Below are a few examples I've found.

Thanks SRC!! Last night was a blast and the food was almost as good as the company. What would I do without my W.O.W!!! I am so blessed to have you and all of my beautiful girlfriends in my life. I'm so glad you were able to make it and thanks, too, for the picture! You and Sophie enjoy this beautiful day...wish I could be outside in it myself...or sitting on a heating pad crocheting next to you while catching up on all of the Castle episodes. I told you it was a cute show! Love you load, LBJ

My mother in law ended up having sugery and although the recovery took ages, she is doing really well pain-wise now.
My two cents worth regarding the background for the hutch shelves: keep it simple. The ones with the busy backgrounds detract from the objects displayed on the shelves.

I've got a white shelving unit and I never thought of papering the backs, now you've got me thinking of doing it. Great pictures, THANKS!

Sorry to hear of your back troubles. I hope you feel better soon! One way you can preview the look of lining your bookshelves is to go to the scrapbook section of Michaels (or wherever) and choose several patterns, enough to cover the area behind one shelf. Then stand back and squint.......another idea is to have Celotex (available at Home Depot) cut to the dimensions of each shelf back. You can cover with paper or staple with fabric of your choice and simply pop them in place. A designer did this and it was fabulous, plus you can change out backgrounds easily and coordinate with fabrics you're using in the room.

Hey Susan...I finally have a suggestion for your. With your cabinet backs...When I had shelves in an antique store, I bought those skinny cafe spring curtain rods (you know they work like a shower rod, but are much smaller and easy to handle) and then made curtains to hang down from them on the back wall of the shelf. I could easily take the curtain rods out to replace with other material. You can make the curtains straight across or do a ruffle...PP

Heart Shaped Box is such a good read! I think you'll really enjoy it. I'm about half way through Shutter Island. I like it alot, but I'm afraid I've already figured out the big plot twist. I guess I'll just wait and see how clever I am--or if I just think I'm clever.

Happy Birthday, Lori!!!! What famous initials you have - as if you haven't heard this a bazillion times. Sorry to make it a bazillion and one.

Susan, I'm so sorry your back continues to cause you pain. I hope the new doctor or someone here can offer a helpful treatment or suggestion. Bless your heart and back!

I'll have to check into "Castle". I hadn't heard of it before. Is it on TV? We're watching "Soap" on DVD. Remember that show? It's still hysterical.

For my 2 cents, I find each of the wallpapers compete too much with the items on the shelves so that the display things are difficult to see. The top photo has empty shelves, so it's hard to say what that linear paper would do.

Do you have a new refrigerator coming?

Hugs!

Susan, I really hate all that mean pain that's keeping you from doing the things you enjoy! It's GOOD that you are NOT giving up! Hopefully the doctor you plan to see will have exactly the right treatment! As for your cabinet backs, I'm with Barbara and Nicole - keep it simple! If you DO add a background, make it something that won't detract from your shelved items! But you have BEAUTIFUL taste, so I know whatever you end up doing will be exactly right! Glad you had fun with WOW last night! Shrimp & grits ... one of my all-time favorite foods. I'm salivating! You & Sophie take it EASY today, sweet girl! LOVE YOU!

Happy Birthday LBJ! What a lovely gal :) Whether to cover the back of those shelves is definitely a hard decision ... part of me says "yes, yes, yes" and the other part of me says "I don't know!" (LOL) Either way, I think it's gonna look lovely :) Hope it's a better "back" day for you my dear. "Back" pain is truly the worse ... it effects your whole body! You take care.

Gosh, Susan. I have no suggestions or solutions for your back, but I sincerely hope you find a solution very soon. Being in pain is the pits.

I think I would lean toward leaving the back of the shelves unpapered. I do love the look of the paper, but I would probably get tired of it.

One Coat Down; One Coat to Go

Hutch one coat I just noticed that I forgot to paint the drawer to my hutch yesterday. But here's the hutch with its first coat of paint. I think one more coat will have it pretty and smooth.

I'm mulling over whether or not to paper the backs of the shelves with some pretty wall paper. I think I'll have to look at some pictures of papered shelves before I decide.

Sophie wants a walk, then I have to get my shower and go grocery shopping. YUK! I hate that chore. The fatigue has lifted a bit, and I'm feeling better today than I have in several days. Good thing too. I'm going out to dinner tonight with my WOW buddies. We're going to celebrate my friend Lori's birthday.

Also the sun is shining here after several dreary, damp, and dark days. It's a beautiful day in the neighborhood. Let's enjoy.

So glad to hear you're feeling better!! Cheers!

I like the look of your re-painted hutch. I'd suggest you put it in place, then arrange furniture around it as you choose to, and last put all of the books and decorative things on it. Stand back and see if you like the look. If the solid color background looks good, then no more thought need be given to papering.

If you're curious about how it would look with paper, then cut the chosen paper to fit and use light tack tape to affix in place temporarily as you consider it. You could also leave it temporary so you can change the paper easily for each season or when you choose to.

Applause for your progress!!

Hugs!

Hi! I'm glad you're feeling a little better. Your hutch looks great. For a temporary background, cut some thin board and wallpaper that. You can do several of these for swap-outs for different seasons, holidays, etc. I think that is a lot of fun, but you can go back to plain when you're tired of the busyness. I want to say that I so admire you and how you continue to live life fully even though you are in pain and grieving. You are an inspiration to all of us. Thank you, Mona

Got Paint?

Painting-furniture Those are not my hands in the photo. If they were, they would be covered with antique white paint.

I got a small burst of energy this afternoon and decided to paint the small hutch (previously blue) in the office. I got one coat on it. Unfortunately that burst of energy ran out about halfway through the process. So during the last half of the painting, I made a big old mess. Paint on clothes, on body, in hair--one big blob even hit me in the face and barely missed my eye. If was only thanks to a generous drop cloth that I didn't paint the entire carpet in the office. Never graceful in the best of times, I go completely klutz when I get tired.

So now, as often happens after a burst of energy, I'm completely drained and don't even feel like knitting or stitching or anything. So I'm going to camp out here on the sofa for an hour or two and see if I can get recharged. No more painting this evening though. That coat has to dry before I add another anyway.

Hutch 018.JPG You might recall that my hutch looked like the one in the photo at far right before I started painting it. And although the hutch in the photo at near right (the white one) isn't mine, I'm hoping that's approximately what it will look like when the painting is finished. I think the antique white hutch, filled with pretty knick knacks, against a light sage green wall will look very pretty.

Our nice spring weather seems to have taken a temporary (I hope) vacation. The last two days have been rainy and cold. I know some people are getting snow, but none here so far.

Jane_churchillinteriors.com[1] And just for fun, here's a photo of an arrangement with two pretty pink chairs. They aren't just like my pink chairs, and they aren't arranged just like mine will be--but still they're pretty, and inspirational. I think mine will, however, be much prettier when my room is finished.

Thanks to all of you who gave me advice and information about the furniture sliders. It's obvious I simply bought the wrong kind of sliders and that's why they aren't working for me. I plan to a set of the ones y'all described, the plastic ones shaped like a Frisbee.

Happy Monday evening to everyone.

Happy Monday to you!

I love how your cabinet must look in it's new coat of antique white paint! Well done! Have you decided whether to leave it as a desk or to put a fabric skirt on it?

Sorry you ran out of steam before you had finished painting and I hope you have leftovers in the 'fridge for dinner so it's a quick and easy meal to prepare.

I like the new inspirational photo, but think your new-to-you chairs are more wonderful than those in the picture.

We had rain this morning with lightening and thunder and it's been cooler ever since.

Hope tomorrow is better for you! Hugs!

All the tiny parts at your home you have made by yourself can always bring you a great happiness any time you look at them. Your hutch is much nicer than the one on the photo! Off My Game

6a00e553cf823b88330120a954d11b970b-750wi

Would you like a chance to win this gorgeous painting by Erin Houghton? Well it's easy peasy. Just vist Kelee at The Katillac Shack to learn the details of the how and why of this fantastic giveaway.

I'd wish you good luck in the drawing, but actually I really would like to win this painting for myself. I think it would look great in my guest room over the bed--especially when my own extreme home makeover is complete.

Truth to tell, I haven't done much in the way of making over this weekend. One of the symptoms of a couple of my physical problems is unexplained fatigue. Those of you with fibromyalgia know just what I'm talking about. Much of the time, I can overcome it for at least a part of each day. But not for the past couple of days. It has been all I can make myself to do walk Sophie and knit a few rows on the sweater.

In fact, last night, I somehow picked up a stitch several rows back in the knitting. Now those of you who knit know that ravelling and fixing is not as easy with knitting as it is with crochet--at least it isn't for me. I finally got it all worked out, but afterwards I put it all back in my knitting bag. I was frustrated and exhausted by then.

Today, I'm planning to at least spackle the nail holes and the like in the office so it will be ready for painting when I get some of my energy back.

While doing nothing except knitting and watching reruns of "Clean House" and "Golden Girls" all weekend, I have had some wonderful ideas and mental images of things to do in the house. Usually I'm pretty sparse on the mental images when doing something like this. I have to just do it and see what it looks like. Maybe it's a matter of the more you do it, the better you get at picturing how things will look.

Sliders Do y'all know what these are? Yep, furniture sliders. I had high hopes when I bought them. I could just see me pushing big old pieces of furniture all over the house just like they do on tv. But guess what: they don't work. At least not in my house on my carpet. They go under the furniture pieces just fine; but when I start to slide the furniture, the piece just slides right off the slider onto the carpet. I've tried them on several pieces of furniture in different rooms. Have any of you ever used these? Were you able to get them to work?

What a lovely painting!

Yesterday I forgot to say that I love the glorious blue of your sweater yarn and applaud your progress. Sorry it's become an energy drain all because of one stitch. Bother!

I saw the furniture slides used on several TV shows and wanted to get them, but haven't. I wonder if you need a second person to pull as you push to make it work as shown on TV?

Lupus has the deep fatigue component that is the most common bother in my lupus experience. I hear you! I hope and pray that your fatigue will be gone soon. Be good to you!

Dontcha hate it when the body talks and you have to obey it. There's no getting around it --some of us have "bossy" bodies. I do hope the bossiness subsides very soon. In the meantime, allow the idea factory to compensate a tad for the enforced couch time. Dream beautiful dreams.
BTW, I too have the "Moving Men" set. I and my neighbors have had good success with them. Even so, a heavy piece of furniture is still a heavy piece of furniture.
Blessings!

You know I relate to the fatigue thing! Lupus AND the 'bonus' of fibro sometimes feel like way too much for one round person to deal with. But I just have to drag myself through the flares and I know you do, too! (And YOU, as well, Barbara Anne!) Oh, yes! That business of dropping/repairing knitted pieces reminded me why I retired my needles when I learned to crochet! LOL! As for the sliders, never had them, but surely could have USED some many times! Hope you get them to cooperate! Now! Take it EASY until you feel better! Cuddle up with sweet Sophie and watch tv, read, or whatever feels okay at the moment! LOVE YOU SO MUCH!

Beautiful painting.
I use sliders (different than yours) and have success unless the furniture legs have wheels, then they don't work. My set has a side that goes on the floor, the other side is different. I've been able to move furniture pretty well using the sliders but the heavy pieces still need a good shove.

On 03/22/2010, Jan said ...

That is one gorgeous painting Susan! Tks so much for telling us about it ... I know that wasn't easy (LOL). We've had excellent luck w/those furniture slide thingies on our "need to replaced" Berber carpet. I think there are several brands, so perhaps another set would do the trick. Sure hope you're not as tired today!

Our sliders work great, but they look more like a frisbee. The lip on them keeps the furniture from sliding off.

We use furniture sliders and LOVE them! You may have yours upside down. We have little covers for ours to use them on hard surface floors and the smooth for carpet. Maybe you could put some no slip stuff on top of them. They make moving furniture SO much easier! And I know what you mean about Erin's art... we would all be thrilled to win! ♥ I'll hope for you to win! ♥

A Day of Handwork and Heritage

Knitting

I didn't sew during Heidi's Friday Night Sew-in. Instead I knitted. I'm working on a sweater in this scrumptious turquoise yarn (machine washable). So last night, while I watched a new show called "Who Do You Think You Are," or something like that, I knitted and purled. In last night's episode, Lisa Kudrow traveled to Eastern Europe to find her roots, and a gentleman the family thought long dead.

Yesterday was a busy day, which is why I never got around to tracing my last two Noah's Ark squares. My daughter Andy woke up with a raging stomach bug. I went by her house a couple of time to take her stuff and check on her. I also had to go grocery shopping.

Then yesterday afternoon, we had our first neighborhood happy hour of the season. If you've been reading this blog for a while, you know that warm evenings usually find a bunch of us neighbors, kids, and doggies sitting around in Paul and Karen's driveway, visiting and enjoying each other's company. So Karen, Paul, me, Sophie, Bob, MaryBeth, Nolan, Hunter, Tiny (doggie), and Kinley (doggie) did just that. As soon as the sun got low, it started getting chilly again, so we broke up early. But it was a good kickoff.

Irishflower

Just like Lisa Kudrow, I too have been exploring my roots, as you know. I took a little time yesterday to play on Ancestry.com and did find some more Miskelley ancestors. I have that line of our family traced back to 1734 now, but I'm still in America.

My hope is that this line will take me eventually to Ireland, while my sisters are thinking something else entirely. I don't know why I hope these Miskelleys originated in Ireland. For some reason, I've always had this desire to be Irish. I remember when I was in the 6th grade, I spent a whole day trying to speak with an Irish accent. I think everyone thought I had gone 'round the bend.

But we are what we are. I can't make it so; all I can do is keep searching and hoping my search takes me to the misty Emerald Isle. Figuratively and literally. I mean to go there someday.

RegQuilt Happy National Quilting Day, everyone (whether you're a quilter or not). If you're interested, go here to see how you can own your very own awesome Irish Quilt, just like the one in the photo at left. It's a depiction in painted fabric of an aerial view of the Irish countryside, complete woods, hedgerows, sheep, a church with cemetery, and a wee red-roofed cottage with smoke wafting from its chimney.

Now, I'm going to my sewing room. I think I've actually cleared out a space big enough to do some sewing in.

What a lovely neighborhood you're in! Long years ago when we were in seminary housing, the adults met under the coffee tree and the kids played. It was a corner of heaven! We plan to get a picnic table to put in AMIL's yard to have a mini-version of that tradition.

The label is on the little St. Paddy's quilt so that's some sewing for today. Next is DS1's long-awaited quilt with its dark colors and layout he wants that I don't care for. Keep me in your prayers! I hope to be pleasantly surprised as I make it.

Hope Andy makes a quick recovery and you don't get the bug.

Happy National Quilting Day and happy sewing to you!

Hugs!

Nothing like a little sunshine and good friends to drive away the doldrums!

I also wanted to be Irish! You know...with the red hair I have and all! But, I met my biological father late in life and found out his family was from Scotland. My side of the family was traced and it was Irish...but all in all...the further back they researched...we ended up Celtic! So...good luck with your search!

Shoot! I forgot that show was on and I wanted to watch it. Oh well, I probably would have fallen asleep anyway. I tried watching the Princess and the Frog last night and only made it about 20 minutes in, before both the cats and me were all snuggled on the couch for a short winter's nap.

What a wonderful tradition your neighborhood has of spending the evenings together. I'll bet many great friendships have come of this. Is the pot of red flowers yours? Great photo.

Have a great weekend and Happy National Quilting Day to you!

GORGEOUS SWEATER! I love that vibrant color! ALMOST - not quite, but almost - makes me want to pull out my long-dormant knitting needles! I DID spend ages crocheting today, tho', but still, that sweater is a real temptation to knit. LOL! I'm so sorry Andy isn't well! Sounds EXACTLY like what we have over here! Mine is finally trying to go away a bit but my housemate's isn't yet. Tell Andy to get well quickly! And YOU stay well, my friend! Isn't that WHO DO YOU THINK YOU ARE an interesting show? I've really been enjoying it! Hope you find some Irish in your heritage!

On 03/21/2010, Kelee Katillac said ...

Hi Susan!

I have missed you! I love this post for so many reasons. First, that blue of your sweater is amazing! Blue of that vibration means "a passionate search for spiritual or personal meaning." So perfect because you are now looking into your lineage. I have seen the ad for that new show--it looks great. Ireland is such a mystical place.

Also, there are several books out that tell case studies of children that are convinced they are someone from the past or from a place. When researched they find this as evidence of a past life as a person or pedigree. Hmm. Interesting. Whether you believe in that or not, it is interesting.

I LOVE the quilt shown! Just fantastic. I have been a member of the British National Trust for Historic Properties and have toured over there many times. I hope you take your journey to Ireland--
being Irish may have spiritual roots for you---if not literal ones.

Thank-you for your visit...I will be back soon, my friend!

love, kelee Hope Sophie is well!

This is from the genealogical book "The South Carolina Miskelly, Miskelley Family."

Based on his research, Sam Miskelly, from Belfast Ireland, believes the South Carolina Miskellys came from County Antrim in Northern Ireland instead of
county Down. There are Miskelly families in both counties and all are somehow related.

An Edward Miskelley immigrated to York, South Carolina in 1767 aboard the ship Hillsborough from Ireland. Some researchers think this man is the same as James Edward Miskelly (1730-1803) grandfather of James DeKalb (1796-1869). I don't think anyone disputes the fact that the Miskellys came from Ireland.

Celebrate Quilting

Bunnies

But first, look what I found at the local Thrift Store recently. I had gone in to look for pink sheets and found some pink striped ones. They're in the dryer right now. When I was checking out, the lady told me the knick-knacks were all half price, so I took another turn through the knick-knack section and found the bunnies. I think they're so cute. I'm going to get a pretty pot of flowers to set under them in my painted chair--just as soon as the threat of freezing temps is over (if it ever is).

I had a great St. Patrick's Day. As it turned out, Cracker Barrel was all out of CB&C, so I had delicious turnip greens, pintos, and corn muffins. Andy had catfish. I told her that was ok--we're southern Irish.

2010quilt All you quilters, don't forget that Saturday, March 20, is National Quilting Day. Be sure to celebrate. I plan to spend the day in the sewing room, getting the final piles put away so that I can use it again. Click on the link to find a free pattern for the quilt shown in the illustration at left.

And there's another way to celebrate quilting this week. You can do as I plan to do and join in Heidi's monthly Friday Night Sew-In tomorrow night. My plan is to finish the last two embroidered squares for the Noah's Ark quilt tomorrow night and maybe watch a good movie.

What are your plans for celebrating quilting this weekend?

I love your optimistic posts!!

This morning I made the label for my 18" St. Patrick's wall hanging so will sew it on tomorrow, will look into a quick Easter wall hanging made from a basket block I appliqued a few years ago plus an Easter egg fabric bought a decade ago, and I hope to start a quilt for DS1.

I'm still delighted to have learned of Pat Sloan's OP challenge last year from your mention of it. I have made 2 Halloween wall hangings from that pattern all thanks to you!

Love you bunnies!

Hugs!

Thanks so much for the link to that adorable quilt pattern Susan! I'll be starting the celebration for NQD a bit early, as I'm taking tomorrow off from work and spending the day at our local Quilt Show in Ft. Lauderdale ... "Quilting by the Sea;" and then hopefully Saturday will find me in my Sewing Room working on something scrumptious! Enjoy yours :)

My favorite meal at Cracker Barrel is a double order of greens, hashbrown casserole, the apple side (the name escapes me at the moment) and a muffin/biscuit combo (have to save the biscuits for the apples). YUM!!!

Northern Nevada needs a Cracker Barrel NOW!!! :-)I want a bowl of greens!

Love the bunnies, Susan. Your little chair display will be adorable. No worries of frost here anymore, it was 90 degrees today, oh boy.

We went to Cracker Barrel for lunch on St. Patrick's Day, and I got the last plate of CB&C. It was delicious. It would have been fun to meet you there.

Love your bunnies.

Thought I'd better comment while my head is vaguely cleared. I have a cursed virus & am alternately feeling terrible & semi-human. Right now, it's semi-human! I LOVE your bunnies! What a great find! I'm not celebrating quilting this weekend - well, at least not MY quilting or lack thereof - but I will enjoy YOUR quilting! LOVE YOU! (And, of COURSE, lil' Sophie!)

I love those bunnies! I think they are so cute that I'd have to find a permanent place for them, even when Easter is over!

Kiss Me, I'm Irish (maybe)!

Image.x I have found a whole new and wonderful way to waste time: Ancestry.com. On a whim this morning, I signed on, and that's where I've been all day.  I did find the names of my great great AND great great great grandparents, and I'm so excited.

It started with my great grandmother, Eliza Jane Miskelley Ramey. There has always been some family confusion as to who she was, what her nationality was. Since my search hit a wall with my great great great grandparents who were still in South Carolina, I can't say for sure where this family originated. But I've found that the name at least originated in Ireland, that is according to one website.

So this being St. Patrick's Day, I'm celebrating my possible Irish ancestors, the Miskelleys: Great Grandma Eliza, Great Great Grandpa Lucian, Great Great Great Grandpa James Dekalb, and Great Great Great Grandma Elizabeth.

In closing, I send you all this Irish greeting (that's I learned from Andy):

May the good Lord take a liking to you--

But not too soon.

Irish-lady

Now I'm going to get ready to go to dinner with Andy. We're going to Cracker Barrel for corned beef and cabbage. I usually cook CB&C on St. Patrick's Day. But I decided to let somebody else do it this time.

My husband is hooked on ancestry.com and I'm hooked on Cracker Barrel (which we don't have in No. Nevada)...order some greens and cornbread for me please. :-)

Top 'o the day to you, darlin'! Faith an begorra (sp?), I'm part Irish, too!

I've never been to Ancestry.com for some reason but on my living room wall, I have a portrait of my great-grandmother Betty who was born in 1850 or 1851. The information with the painting is that she was two years old in 1853 when the portrait of her and her old sister was painted.

Supper for us will be corned beef, no cabbage as no one here likes cabbage except me.

I've been wearing green today. Have you?!

Hugs!

Happy St. Paddy's day Susan. How was your corned beef? That is one of my favorite meals. I cooked it yesterday. It was delish.
Does that ancestory site cost? Or is it free? Sounds interesting. dont you love the internet?

Oh, once you start on Ancestry, it just becomes addictive! And people get in touch with you to tell you how you're related!! I also posted info on Genesreunited - which is how we were able to join up a lot of dots between relatives!

I'm suer you'll be spending a lot more time on that website!

A Touch of Tan

Mosaice3b174134ea4e9bf674e3068549ff758693430fb-1

Today, I'm thinking of adding a bit of brown/tan to the pink/green color scheme for the living room. Probably paint the walls a nice warm latte color.

There is tan in the chair that will probably remain in the living room.

Chair

...and in Vann's ceramic pieces that I plan to keep on the mantel...

Pottery
...and the quilt that might or might not remain on the wall behind the couch.

So right now, I'm thinking along the lines of a new couch, probably green...

...or some warm shade of brown.

I've given a little thought to a red or raspberry color for the couch...

723550_723550-m

...but I'm afraid that's a little too "out there" for me. I'd probably tire of it before long. My friend Karen has a pretty red sofa, and I love it. But I don't have to live with it.

I have a red sofa and it is sometimes hard to live with. I wish I had gone with something neutral. Then you can add whatever accent color you want or switch accent colors with the seasons. I like the brown one.

Hi! I think you'll be pleased with the addition of tan or a similar color to your color scheme. Vann's pottery is wonderful and the quilt allows for all the colors you have in mind, plus browns for the ceramic pieces.

I, too, have loved red couches, but have never lived with one. AMIL has a burgundy camel-back couch that has one long cushion and no skirt and she loves it.

When DH and I married in 1972, we chose as our everyday china a Franciscan pattern called Madeira. It's brown with a green pattern and my mother was aghast. She said it would be like washing mud and over time, she was right. I'd hesitate about a brown couch for the same reason. The brown is trendy now, but is still a big block of dark color. Still, it's your house, so choose what speaks to you!

Have you ever seen the Nancy Martin book "Make Room for Quilts"? Great room photos using quilts here and there.

Have fun! Hugs!

I have TWO red sofas in my living room and I love them! Big brown leather chairs and RED sofas! Love them! I love chocolate brown sofas, too! It's fun to hunt for new furniture! ♥

stay neutral for large pieces. Last couch I bought was blue/white plaid. What was I thinking? I don't like blue and plaid was never my thing.(it must have been a darn good price lol).. Glad it's gone.
Now I have dark chocolate brown microfiber and LOVE IT!! I can change out pillows and drapes and not worry about the color. I do have light carpet, but I have dark tan walls. We get a lot of light in this room so it's not a problem.

Green can be a neutral, and you can accent it with any other colors and patterns that you want.

On 03/16/2010, KAI said ...

You have a goooooood eye for color combos. Wish I did! I'm afraid my rule of thumb for matching things is: If I like it, I stick it in the room. LOL! Guess no one will be hiring ME as a designer!

Love latte for the walls! A chocolate brown couch would be a darling place for raspberry pillows and a lap quilt or cushy new afghan!!

My guest room is "Lenox Tan" by Benjamin Moore, and the linens, curtains and decorations are "shabby chic" cream, pink and green. I must say it looks great together! The tan really grounds the room. So I agree, tan goes WONDERFULLY with those colors!!

I read somewhere that every room should have some red in it. I'm not sure I'd want a red sofa, but I do have red accents here and there. You're one busy girl.

On 03/17/2010, Marla said ...

I agree with the majority. Keep larger pieces/areas neutral and change out your accents as suits your needs or whimsey. You will also be able to decorate seasonally that way if you like. Sophie doesn't shed so at least you don't have to decorate with that in mind!

Think Pink--and Green

Mosaic92bcf9194d62bddc7d805f10aa502e55b2cafaf4

Although it's hard work, I'm having a great time planning for and refurbishing my house. Everything is still pretty much in a big mess right now; but I have come to a point where I can almost see what it will be like when I'm finished.

In addition to decluttering, moving stuff around, chasing dust bunnies, and what-not, I've also been perusing internet home dec sites and blogs for ideas. I'm even getting to know myself a little better in the process. For example, although I would have probably answered "blue and yellow" if asked what my favorite color combination is, I'm finding it's really pink and green. There's just something so happy about those two colors together.

Below are a few shots I found online for my inspirations folder.

Below is a beautiful photo taken by my friend Marilyn H., and attached to the birthday card that she and her husband Tony sent me. Goes right along with today's theme, doesn't it?

Pg card

That beautiful pink zinnia also reminds me that I want to do some gardening this year too. But I don't know if that's going to happen, since my work in the house is probably going to last right through summer.

Don't you think pink and green look delicious together? What is your favorite color combination? Have you been able to use it anywhere in your house?

Great inspiration photos! I like the rooms where the pink is softer, like the 2nd photo sunroom, the room with the Grandmother's Flower Garden quilt blocks over the couch, and the next to last photo with the light green couch.

I love the amazing zinnia photo. Perhaps it should be matted and framed?!

My favorite color combinations have been pink and green for years but while raising boys it's been mostly in my sewing room. Our bedroom as pink/green wallpaper that I love and DH likes. The colors in our home have evolved to green/blue/red/cream tho that's been a happen-so of time.

I will confess to liking blue and white, blue and cream, blue and yellow so may have a quilt to make in those hues to satisfy myself.

I'm so happy you can see glimpses of how your home is coming together with all you've done! How wonderful!

Hugs!

I think you are going to find it a very REFRESHING change. Makes ME feel energetic yet calm at the same time if that makes any sense. Cannot WAIT to see what you do! Just don't try to do too much too quickly! LOVE YOU!

Hi Susan - oh yes, pink and green are my favorite colors, especially pink. You're right, there is something so happy about these two colors. I carry these in my purse in one way, shape, form or another all the time - colored pencils, writing paper, hankies, etc. Love the pics you've posted of decorating ideas - I would love to redo my home like these (I have too many boys in the house at this stage, they would never go for the pink!). Have a wonderful day!! Hugs.

It's so hard to pick a favorite color combo. I love red-white-and blue, but I also like red and turquoise, and red and yellow. And I do love pink and green! That one shot with the quilt blocks framed over the couch is gorgeous.

When I was about 11, my mother made me an Easter dress (an a-line mini) that was green with pink flowers. I had a big pink bow for my hair, pink and green 'love beads' and pink--get this--fishnet stockings. Yep, I was a kid in the 60s, LOL!
