Damn Good Dog

HFLPLRWBSYEMVUR.20070815203959 He was the winningest mascot in all of Georgia football history. During his tenure (1999-2007), Georgia football teams compiled an 87-27 record and scored two SEC championships. Today Uga VI will be laid to rest in a marble vault in the Southwest corner of Sanford Stadium with his five predecessors. He was nine years old.

Uga VI died Friday of congestive heart failure in his hometown of Savannah, Georgia. His body will be transported, along with his owners, the Sonny Seiler family, to Athens via a University of Georgia plane.

Uga VI's successor will be announced at a later date. The Seilers assured that the Uga lineage is secure.

The Cleveland family mourns the loss of this damn good dog, along with the Seiler family and all the Bulldog Nation. Vann, who is a Georgia alumnus and a rabid Bulldogs fan, was grief stricken when he heard of Uga's demise yesterday.

Vann's favorite Uga VI memory is of the big guy going for the crotch of an Auburn player who got in his way? Mine is of him lying on a bag of ice to cool his, er uh, tenders? Rest in peace, Uga old boy. You were indeed a DAMN GOOD DOG!

I put this on my blog too; I dont live in GA ( but want to ) but I am owned by foour English Bulldogs and we love them so; I just cried about UGA passing as if he were one of my own. My eldest, Niles is the same age as UGA and that scares me. I send love to his family from ours and to all who loved this "damn good dog" He is truly a one of a kind. Merrie Miller

Market Day

B Market This summer, my little town has started something new. Each Friday afternoon, growers and merchants from all around set up their tents in the street between the First United Methodist Church and the Chamber of Commerce (formerly Aunt Ima's house) and give Leeds residents a chance to purchase fresh produce, honey, and even flowers without leaving town.

Our WOW! (Women of Worship) group decided to set up a bake sale booth this Friday. We made $428 on our first Market Day. We'll continue to do this throughout the summer to raise money to refurbish the kitchen in our fellowship hall.

In preparation for the bake sale, I baked all morning yesterday. I made a sour cream pound cake, a blackberry cobbler, and three loaves of banana nut bread.

The cupcake quilt is going to be sweet enough to eat. You are keeping busy!
We had a blackberry bramble fence at our last home. I really miss those berries. They were over an inch long and bursting with goodness. You could have made a pie every day for weeks and still had plenty to share. It was a thorny mess of branches to prune. Not fun.
I haven't tasted this year's cherry tomato crop because the squirrels are eating them green.
Not fair. Sharing is okay, jumping the gun is not.

Whazup?

Tag Yesterday I made a couple of tags to attach to cakes for our Wow Bake Sale tomorrow. Thought a little embellishment might entice shoppers to buy.

I also worked on my next two altered playing cards. But I really don't like them, and I don't think I'm ready to show them. Maybe I can fix them..

Today has been full speed ahead. First, I had a doctor's appointment at 9:30. Then I went to the Thrift Store, where I found a few treasures. Grocery shopping at Target came next, followed by lunch, then more blackberry picking in Paul's garden. After all that, I was completely exhausted so I thought I'd take a nap. But every time I dozed, the phone would ring, or somebody would ring the doorbell, sending the dogs into barking spasms. So I finally got up and started the Lemon Pound Cake that I'm baking for Andy to take to work tomorrow for a birthday party for one of her co-workers.

Below are my treasures: 1) two pretty mugs for 50 cents each, 2) a fun mug of hearts--39 cents, 3) a great Corning dish for $3, 4) more sheets and pillow cases for making PJs and tote bags (except I'm going to use the blue striped sheets for the guest room. They'll go perfectly.

Oh, and the wedding quilt came in from the quilter today. When I've bound it, I'll post a picture of the whole quilt and give you the quilter's name. She's a good 'un.

Even though red is my favorite color, I love the look of blue and white together. I bought a hutch at a garage sale a few years back and painted it white. I keep some blue and white pieces in it. Nothing fancy...just things I've picked up here and there. There's something calming about blue and white, I think!

Farewell, Tasha

Tasha43 I just learned that Tasha Tudor died on Wednesday, and I'm very sad. She was 92. I believe that she was just as gentle as her art. We've lost a wonderful talent and a dear woman. I wonder who will care for her animals.

A Blackberry Day on the Creek

Blackberry Picking Although I hate the hot weather of June, one of my favorite things to do is pick blackberries. I've enjoyed this activity since I was a little kid and my mama would take me and my sister wild blackberry picking.

I also love to eat blackberries--blackberry cobbler, blackberry jam, blackberry pie, blackberry muffins, just anything with blackberries in it--or just a bit ol' handful of juicy blackberries right off the bush.

This is me picking cultivated blackberries in our neighbor Paul's garden. Paul and Karen have the most fabulous garden I've ever seen; and when they're away on vacation (as they are this week), Vann takes care of things for them--watering, picking, keeping the armadillos at bay.

Finding out that there are BLACKBERRIES in Paul's garden, I asked if I could help pick this morning. I got almost enough for a cobbler. Tomorrow morning there should be more black ones. The bushes are loaded with not-yet-ripe berries, and it doesn't take them long to turn black.

Blackberries Blackberry Kenley

We're also keeping Paul and Karen's granddog Kenley while the whole family vacations at the beach. Kenley is a 9-year-old Golden Retriever with a bad case of arthritis. (Kenley and I have a very similar gait.) She is such a sweet dog, and she has been Sophie's buddy for a long time. But Sophie isn't so sweet to her when Kenley is in Sophie's house. Jealous.

Blackberry Cukes Blackberry Herbs

We also picked some cucumbers and just a bit of herbs from Karen's herb garden. (That's Hunter, a neighborhood lad, with me. He helps Paul a lot in the garden, and he helps Vann take care of it when Paul's away.) Since I don't know one herb from the next if they aren't in labeled bottles on the supermarket shelf, I'm not sure what I picked. But whatever they were tasted really great in the sauce I made for lunch out of fresh farmer's market tomatoes, garlic, green onions, olive oil, and Karen's herbs. I served the wonderful sauce over pan-grilled chicken breasts and angel hair pasta. The fresh-from-the-vine cucumbers were awesome on our salad. What a lunch!

Blackberry magazine In the mailbox today, I received my July/August copy of Fons & Porter's Love of Quilting.
For a long time now, I haven't found a lot to love in the quilting magazine's I've bought. But this issue is packed full of great projects and info. I love the little cover quilt, "Cherry Festival." You can even order a kit to make it if you don't want to choose your own fabrics.

The landscape quilts in the feature, "How Does Your Garden Grow," will inspire you, and the "Tiny Treasures" quilt and pillow will make you smile. The "Feathered Medallion" quilt will make you say "WOW!! Cheryl Kerestes's "Butterfly Garden" will absolutely amaze you. A 1930s type pattern done in vibrant, modern fabrics, it's a masterpiece. But I think my favorite of all this month is Jill Reid's "Tussie Mussie."

There's lots more, but I won't spoil it for you. Just get a copy and see for yourself.

I still haven't quite caught up with all my e-mail, comments, and blog visits. I also have two Altered Playing Cards to do this week, since I didn't get around to doing one last week. And I hope to get the binding sewn on Andy's green quilt. Now if I could just get that blankey-de-blank fibro-monster-werewolf to go away, I'd be ready to roll.

George Carlin-2 In closing, I'd like to remember one of the funniest and most foul-mouthed men in history, George Carlin. George passed away on Sunday at the age of 71. I know St. Peter has been busy ever since, giving George "the talk" about why he can't talk that way in Heaven.

My very favorite George Carlin skit is the one about Kitty Cats. I don't dare post the You Tube video here for fear that St. Peter might someday have to give me "the talk." You can click on the link if you'd like to watch it. But read below first.

WARNING!!!! This video contains R-rated language. So don't follow the link if George Carlin language offends you. "Kitty Cats" is not nearly as bad as his "Words You Can't Say on TV," but there's definitely some language.

Rest in peace, George. And please clean up the language before you go before the Big Guy.6a00d83536c16f69e200e553879bcb8834-800pi

P.S. If you're up for a fun swap, go over to Sharon's Red Geranium Cottage
and join in her Cupcake Swap. I think this one's going to be waaaaaay fun!

OK, I'm for real finished now. I've been trying to get this post done all day. It's now about quarter till seven, pm, and it's finally done. Good night, all.

Hope you get enough blackberries for a cobbler! I'm taking 'Bama girl out later this week - she's never picked any...I think it's time for her to experience the chiggers, thorns, and snakes! Makes them taste better!

Ummmmmmm! The blackberries look absolutely scrumptious! We usually have fresh cucumbers and tomatoes, but we didn't plant this spring because we'd be gone for 3 weeks (leave Thurs). DH will plant when we return from the east coast. I sure pray that the fibro wolf will get off your back so you get to be your energetic self and pain free. Take care!

Blackberry picking is one of our Autumn treats here in England in September. So seeing those berries makes my mouth water already. Your neighbours are lucky to have you looking after their garden when on their holidays.

On 06/25/2008, Beverly said ...

Blackberries are my absolute favorite of all berries. I love eating them plain the best.

Too funny - I was thinking the same thing about George Carlin. It's a good thing God has a sense of humor.

My Ducks Are in a Row (Almost)

6a00d8341cbb0053ef00e54f863d698834-pi

I'm just about ready to leave in the morning--and I do feel a wee bit better than I did yesterday. (Maybe the wolf is napping.) I still have to pack my bag and do my homework (I'll be leading one study session and one devotional this weekend). Then I'll be ready.
Blue Quilt
I finished Falicia's Wedding Quilt top and got the backing made. I'm  going to pack it up, and Vann is going to ship it to the quilter tomorrow.

I didn't get Andy's quilt bound, which I wanted to do before I left; but it's first on my list of things to do when I get home.

Everyone have a great weekend, and I'll be back in touch on Monday.

I HATE fibro! I have it, too - UGH! It comes with the territory for most of us Lupus folks. Isn't THAT nice? A bonus WITH the already miserable Lupus. But, each day we just have to get up & be grateful we DID, then find all the GOOD things in that 24 hours. It's hard, hard, hard at times, huh? I haven't slept lying down for a LONG time because it hurts to have the sheet touch my legs. People laugh when I say that but I bet you understand what I mean! I hope so much the flare up subsides enough so that you truly enjoy your trip! I'll be thinking of you and sending positive wishes!

But Grandma, What Big Teeth You Have

Litt Red I've been feeling punier and punier every day this week--then yesterday the fibromyalgia went into full flare. Remembering what I discussed last month regarding fibro and the moon, I hobbled to the calendar to check what phase the June Moon was in. Guess what? Tonight is full moon.

So that pretty much settles that question. The fibromonster is actually a werewolf who does his nastiest work during the full moon and the days preceding and following it.

This is a most unfortunate development. Tomorrow morning at 7:30 I'm supposed to leave with my Women of Worship (WOW!) group for Orange Beach for our annual beach retreat. The prospect of packing a suitcase sends me into waves of anxiety. My brain won't even let me think about the four-hour ride.

My brain also can't think of anything else to write, so I'm going now to start getting ready to ride to the beach with 11 other women in a van. I know that sounds like a fun thing, and normally it would be. But during really bad flares, I crave a soft, quiet, stationary place until the wolf goes back behind that tree.

Clothesline Beauties

Guild 1Members at this morning's June meeting of the Birmingham Quilters Guild brought lots of lovely show-and-tell. Many of them had won prizes in this weekend's Alabama Quilt Symposium quilt show at St. Bernard College at Cullman, Ala. At left is Mary Grace's "Purple Mountains Majesty,: which won a first-place ribbon, Best of Show, and Viewer's Choice. Mary Grace is used to this. She has oodles of ribbons, and frequently wins the Best of Show and Viewer's Choice ribbons at shows.

There were about 100 members present this morning, making the room really a poor setting for picture taking. But I did my best and got shots of lots of the lovely quilts.

Enjoy.

None of the quilts are mine. I didn't take show-and-tell today, but I sure did enjoy the others. But mostly I enjoyed visiting with my guild friends that I haven't seen in a couple of months, since I missed last month's meeting.

What wonderful quilts. I never miss a quilt show if I can help it. Sadly I don't live where much of that goes on here. However, there are many country women who have quilted for years, the old fashioned way. By Hand. I will say, the sewing machine quilts are just as amazing.

Thanks for sharing, Jeanne

I went to a quilt show once when we were in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, and my husband I both enjoyed it immensely.

Thank you for sharing these beauties with us.

Thank you for the little quilt show. The top one by Mary Grace is a beauty! All the others are winners too.

Those are absolutely stunning! I've had a love affair with quilts since I was 8 years old & saw my grandmother piecing one. She promised to teach me but sadly, died when I was 10. I've never learned. Still, I LOVE looking at, owning, and (in the winter) sleeping under a quilt.

Those are stunning! I really want to make it to a quilt show, we don't have many in our area. I want to try to find one and make it a day trip for the family. My oldest especially loves looking at and dissecting quilts. I want her to see up close how amazing they are, she's planning on getting better at it this summer. If she could see some up close I know she'll run with it and it will be amazing. Thanks so much for posting these pictures, I'll be showing her later.

The scalloped one looks like it may be shadow-quilted. Lovely. They're all beautiful.
