Remember This

Scapbook

I have decided to create a photo album of all my quilts. I'm not really sure why. Maybe for my kids to have documentation of my work when I'm no longer around. Maybe for me to have a visual of all my quilts in one place. Maybe just because it sounds like a fun project. Or maybe just to document that I left a little something of myself behind. Of course, there are also the books and magazines that I wrote and edited. But I'll think about that later.

I went to Michael's with the intention of purchasing a nice photo album. But I found that a nice photo album is pricey indeed; and also I didn't see a one that was really what I wanted. So I decided to create my own.

For a little more than five bucks, I got a three-ring binder. I intend to make a pretty quilty cover for it, along the lines of those below, which I found on Pinterest.

So keep a watch for posts of my quilt album. I hope to get started soon, right after I finish putting Karen's quilt together.

You've made such beautiful journals in the past, I'm sure the cover for you new journal will be just as creatively interesting and the contents will - naturally - be stellar!

Monday Morning Mouse

714oVOpUpNL._AC_SL1500_

The morning after Jesse released the mouse, I found evidence that another one had visited the kitchen. Or perhaps it's the same mouse that found his way back in. So Jesse set the traps back up and this morning, there he is, another (or the same) mousie trying to figure out how to get that cheese. The placement of the cheese sort of bothers me about this trap. It's situated so that the mouse can smell it but not eat it. I think that's mean.

Anyway, I'm taking this one to the city park, where he should find lots to eat and never be able to find his way back to my house.

Goodbye Mr. Mousie (of Ms. Mousie, as the case may be).

A park is the perfect place to release the mouse. Great idea!

I think you should leave the traps up for several more days in case you caught/released #2.

Hugs!

Never release critters close to home!! Guess you discovered that one on your own. If you live in the city, a park sounds like a good place.

you will also need to find the place of entry and fix it. The gap will not be very big. I have a cat. This time of year she can hardly keep up with the mice coming in from the fields around the house...!

Did I Mention We Had a Mouse

6242a66a822600e06552fa5939d585ab

A few nights ago Jesse was in the kitchen and I was in bed reading. Suddenly I heard him shout, "We have a big mouse! He ran right across my foot."

Two cats in the house, and we have a mouse! What the heck, cats?

The next day I checked around in the kitchen and found the mouse's leavings, necessitating the disinfecting of all surfaces.

How to get rid of a mouse. Hmmm. I obviously couldn't count on those two shifless felines. I certainly wasn't going to put out poison. And spring traps were out of the question. My heart is just too tender for any kind of mouse mayhem. I found some catch-and-release traps on Amazon, ordered two, and received them yesterday. Jesse baited and set them for me. Today we had a big fat mouse cooling his heals in one of them. Jesse took him outside and set him free in the sweet autumn air. I just hope he does't find his way back in.

I agree, don't kill that mouse set him/her free. We are overrun with squirrels and have two live traps in our garden. Our dachshund hunts and kills squirrels but we catch and release the ones in the garden.....a mile from home. Last week we caught an opossum. We released it at night near a creek. Years ago, when we first moved on acreage, we made runs out of PVC and poisoned the rats and mice. We then found a red tailed hawk and an owl dead. They must have eaten the poisoned critters. Since then, we don't use poison and don't kill critters on purpose. Our dachshund is a huntress and has caught many squirrels and birds :(

Yikes! Nice to know there are catch-and-release traps now.
Decades ago, we lived in a rental 'shotgun' house with oour mutt dog. One winter morning as I sat in the living room, a muse appeared sitting in our warm radiator. When the dog spied the mouse, a chase was on. The mouse ran through the dining room, the kitchen, and into the dead-end pantry. It then turned around and ran straight at the dog and me whereupon we hit the ceiling and the mouse ran back to the living room and disappeared through a wee crack on the basboard by the front door. The dog and I agreed never to tell anyone.

Yes, indeed. It's a sad day as Queen Elizabeth II was a remarkable woman. May she rest in peace.

Elvis, Gilbert, and the Crimson Tide

"In the early morning rain with no place to go"
--Peter, Paul, and Mary

I woke up to "early morning rain" earlier, which is always a good sign. I love a rainy day, you know.

September has started out as a really good month (although I still haven't made any progress on sewing Karen's quilt.) But if Saturday was any indication (and I ignore the pain), the month promises good things.

Austin-butler-elvis-ftrjpgAustin sings Elvis

I made a pot of chicken and dumplings, daughter Andy came over, we ate, then we got comfortable on the couch in front of the tv (with Taco). First we watched the new movie "Elvis," starring young Austin Butler as Elvis and old Tom Hanks as colonel Tom Parker.

The acting was mostly good, but the movie format was, I thought, jarring. It was more akin to a cartoon with real-life people instead of animated ones. There was a lot of switching back and forth among time periods lurid colors, crowded sets--and I didn't count them, but there had to be at least a million and a half crotch shots of Elvis (gratuitous crotch, in my opinion).

I was impressed that Austin Butler did all the singing--no dubbing in of Elvis's voice. And he sounded, to me, spot on. And he was terribly good looking, But I thought he looked more like a young Johnny Depp than Elvis.

My observation that Austin (above, top) reminded me a lot of young Johnny Depp (above, bottom) caused Andy and me to strike up a conversation about Johnny. I mentioned that the first movie I had seen him in was "Cry Baby" which I thought was ridiculous and turned me off on Johnny for a long time. I had never seen "Edward Scissorhands" or "What's Eating Gilbert Grape" in particular. But later on in his career I rediscovered him and grew to love him and appreciate his talent. In particular I love him in "Dark Shadows," "Pirates of the Caribbean," and "Secret Garden." Andy said that I really should see "Gilbert Grape;" she was sure I would like it.

Publicity-photo-2-2Gilbert (Johnny Depp) and Arnie (Leonardo DiCaprio)

So when "Elvis" was over, we downloaded "Gilbert," and Andy was right. It was an excellent movie. Johnny did an acceptable job of playing Gilbert and 19-year-old Leonardo DiCaprio was amazing as Gilbert's little autistic brother Arnie. If you've never seen this 1993 film, I recommend it highly.

College-football-large-6732710Although the competition (Utah State) was less than challenging, Bama quarterback Bryce Young looked mighty fine, as did the rest of the team.

By the time we had finished the movies it was past time for the Alabama Crimson Tide opening game of the season to start. We had already missed the first quarter when we tuned it in on YouTube. But it seems we hadn't missed much. The following three quarters saw Alabama run roughshod (as it were) over Utah State. the final score was 55-10. I kept wishing through the entire game that those poor guys in blue and white would score at least once. But it was not to be. Roll Tide.

Time for my second cup of coffee now, then I'm not sure what the rest of the day will hold for me.

I so agree about "Elvis" looking nothing like Elvis! What were they thinking?

Hello September

"And the days grow short when you reach September."
--Frank Sinatra

September - 1
I think maybe it was Tuesday that I planned to work on Karen's quilt. Well, here it is Thursday, the first day of September, and I haven't set foot in the sewing room nor touched Karen's quilt. And I'm not sure I'll make it today.

Yesterday morning I served as my sister Ramey's driver as she went for her second and last cataract surgery. Surgery went well.

The rest of the day is sort of a blur. Since I had to wake up at dawn in order to get Ramey to her appointment on time, I was pretty sleepy when I got home. I tried to take a nap, but Taco didn't cooperate. Every time I dozed off, he planted his big body on top of me and sang the song of his people.

So why not sew today? I'll try, I will. But my knees are hurting and my allergies are acting up. But I am honestly going to try.

Glad to see September is here. The air is noticeably cooler already, and the little yellow butterflies are making their appearance.  I've even seen a little color coming out on the leaves. The ...ber months are my favorite time of year. I expect to perk up considerably now that they have begun.

Happy September everyone.

Am glad Ramey's 2nd surgery went well but am sorry it was scheduled so early in the day.
I'm happy to see September, too but it's till hot here - 88*F today and more of that for the week ahead. The problem is the high humidity and that's 91% this morning without rain in the forecast.
I'm slowly sewing borders for the SIC quilt but for me if there is a grocery trip, there is no sewing due to lack of energy. Bummer!
My autumn quilts will go up on the walls on the equinox but I already changed the LR pillows.

Hugs!
