"In the early morning rain with no place to go"
--Peter, Paul, and Mary
I woke up to "early morning rain" earlier, which is always a good sign. I love a rainy day, you know.
September has started out as a really good month (although I still haven't made any progress on sewing Karen's quilt.) But if Saturday was any indication (and I ignore the pain), the month promises good things.
I made a pot of chicken and dumplings, daughter Andy came over, we ate, then we got comfortable on the couch in front of the tv (with Taco). First we watched the new movie "Elvis," starring young Austin Butler as Elvis and old Tom Hanks as colonel Tom Parker.
The acting was mostly good, but the movie format was, I thought, jarring. It was more akin to a cartoon with real-life people instead of animated ones. There was a lot of switching back and forth among time periods lurid colors, crowded sets--and I didn't count them, but there had to be at least a million and a half crotch shots of Elvis (gratuitous crotch, in my opinion).
I was impressed that Austin Butler did all the singing--no dubbing in of Elvis's voice. And he sounded, to me, spot on. And he was terribly good looking, But I thought he looked more like a young Johnny Depp than Elvis.

My observation that Austin (above, top) reminded me a lot of young Johnny Depp (above, bottom) caused Andy and me to strike up a conversation about Johnny. I mentioned that the first movie I had seen him in was "Cry Baby" which I thought was ridiculous and turned me off on Johnny for a long time. I had never seen "Edward Scissorhands" or "What's Eating Gilbert Grape" in particular. But later on in his career I rediscovered him and grew to love him and appreciate his talent. In particular I love him in "Dark Shadows," "Pirates of the Caribbean," and "Secret Garden." Andy said that I really should see "Gilbert Grape;" she was sure I would like it.
Gilbert (Johnny Depp) and Arnie (Leonardo DiCaprio)
So when "Elvis" was over, we downloaded "Gilbert," and Andy was right. It was an excellent movie. Johnny did an acceptable job of playing Gilbert and 19-year-old Leonardo DiCaprio was amazing as Gilbert's little autistic brother Arnie. If you've never seen this 1993 film, I recommend it highly.
Although the competition (Utah State) was less than challenging, Bama quarterback Bryce Young looked mighty fine, as did the rest of the team.
By the time we had finished the movies it was past time for the Alabama Crimson Tide opening game of the season to start. We had already missed the first quarter when we tuned it in on YouTube. But it seems we hadn't missed much. The following three quarters saw Alabama run roughshod (as it were) over Utah State. the final score was 55-10. I kept wishing through the entire game that those poor guys in blue and white would score at least once. But it was not to be. Roll Tide.
Time for my second cup of coffee now, then I'm not sure what the rest of the day will hold for me.

I so agree about "Elvis" looking nothing like Elvis! What were they thinking?
Happy Labor day! Remember that school used to start the day after? I so so sorry that schools start in August thees days.
Hugs!
