I Want a Real Dog

Colin - 1

This is Colin, a Beany Baby doggie that Andy gave me for my birthday. She knows how much I miss Skipper, how much I miss having a dog at all.

But Colin is likely the only dog I'll ever have--at least if my physical condition stays as it is. My back (and now my feet) make it impossible for me to take care of a doggie the way one would deserve.  In the last couple of years that Skipper was with me I had to cut out his walks and hope he got enough exercise in our large fenced backyard. But I don't think he did. He didn't stay out that long. As he got older, he wanted to stay close to me always. Our backyard is on a slope, so I haven't been able to comfortably walk in it for a long time.

I have an appointment with a foot doctor on Friday to see if I can get some help for my foot pain which sometimes becomes foot numbness. I have to take Ibuprofen every night if I expect to get any sleep. I've already seen my primary care doc about this, but he didn't seem concerned. Just said we all experience foot pain as we age. But I know lots of aging people who still walk very well. Currently I'm spending 90-95% of my time off my feet. It not only hurts to be on my feet, but I'm now very clumsy. I stumble and trip on stuff, and my balance is lousy. Maybe it is just age, and if it is I'll deal with it. But I want to know for sure there's not something I can do about it.

But unless and until I find a solution, I guess I'll just have to pet Colin. He is very soft and cuddly.

I do hope that you keep going to doctors until you find one who cares about your issues. I hope that they can find a solution so you can get outside again

I hear you on wishing for another dog as they are so delightful, caring, loving, and fun. We're there, too, but like you, think we're not up to caring for a dog properly and not for starting with a puppy, for sure! Here the SPCA has a program called "Seniors for Seniors" and they offer older dogs to older folks at reduced costs.

what an annoying bother to have that foot pain. Hope the doctor you see on Friday can help end it.

Hugs!
