A Visit to the Foot Doctor

7673

I had a nice visit with a podiatrist yesterday. Only the second time I've ever been to a podiatrist. The first time was many years ago for a lesion on the bottom of my right foot. I didn't like the doctor and I didn't like what he did to me and I didn't think I'd ever visit another one.

But I really liked this woman. She was attentive, no chit chat. Her mind was on me and my feet, which I appreciated. I recalled the previous guy that I visited was more interested in discussing the editing profession when he found out that's what I did.

So here are the results of the visit: the pain, tightness, and numbness are a result of neuropathy (nerve pain). To get this under control the doctor prescribed Gabapentin. I'm to take that for a month and see her again at the end of that month.

She performed a series of tests on my feet to see how much nerve damage there was. I didn't do too well. The doctor also told me that this condition is responsible for my stumbling and tripping and having so much trouble with my walking. She said the Gabapentin would not help the walking problem but suggested that some strength exercises on my lower body probably might.  So I'm going to look into that. She said she could prescribe physical therapy, but I said I'd rather look into a gym or maybe home exercises first. So that what I'm going to do.

So that's the deal. Until the medicine or exercise or the Force of the Universe makes something better. I'll continue to spend a lot of time off my feet.

I've already decided trips to the grocery store are going to have to be cut out. I don't like pickup and delivery services for groceries. I've never yet received everything and/or the right things. But I'm going to have to suck it up. Andy says just order the simple things and give her a list and let her pick up the things that require more discernment.

I went grocery shopping Thursday and it was a disaster. I performed like the true strumblebum I've become. totally destroyed one carton of Pepsi Zero, knocked a bunch of stuff off one shelf, rolled a carton of Gatorade across the store, sprinkled one aisle with birdseed--just basically wreaked havoc as I went. I have been expecting a restraining order to be delivered any time now to make sure I don't come back to Walmart. But so far, no order.

I haven't been in the sewing room at all this week. I still have seven more blocks to make for Karen't log cabin quilt. I'm doing laundry today so I'm staying downstairs. Maybe some sewing will get done tomorrow.

I'm glad to hear your new podiatrist was/is worthwhile and hope your new medicine works wonders. How kind of Andy to offer to do your grocery shopping of items that need discernment (like a ripe cantaloupe feels like the end of your nose when you press the end where the stem was).
How wise of you to limit your time going up/down your stairs, too. In our trilevel, the floor with the entry hall/LR/DR/kitchen has no loo so going up or down stairs is required. Sigh. Our joints don't like that at all. Hope you have a main floor loo!
Fret not about not sewing as your fabrics will wait for you.

Hugs!
