The Year of the Dog

2018-happy-year-of-dog-vector-material-01

I’m a little calmer now--although I did go through another technological nightmare trying to pay my property tax. Online site didn’t work. No human to answer the telephone at the court house. So I mailed it. Serves me right for waiting till the last minute. I hope the check arrived at the tax collector’s office in time. Just another day in modern America, where everything is designed for efficiency, and nothing is efficient.

My cold is better, although I still have a tickle throat and some nagging congestion and cough. But I think it’s on its way out.

As is much of the rest of the country, Alabama is suffering through a very cold snap. I would like to just stay in and snuggle, but I have to go out to pick up a few things for dinner tomorrow. Andy, Jesse, and I will be sitting down to a traditional Alabama New Year’s Day dinner of blackened peas, turnip greens, ham, and cornbread.

Blessing to all of you for a peaceful and happy 2018. Skipper says he’s going to celebrate the whole year long. It’s the Year of the Dog, you know.

Mad as a Wet Hen

UnknownI’m about to vent about something that probably not a single one of you cares a single things about. But I’m going to do it because it might make me feel better. I’m so angry I could spit. (It’s not political, so if there are any Donald fans left reading my blog, you shouldn’t have your sensibilities disturbed. You might be bored though).

Ever since I decided to start paying my credit card bill online, I’ve had trouble. I don’t know how long that has been, but well over a year. Every month when I go to sign into my account, my password and/or my username (they never will say which it is; could be one, could be the other, could be both, who the hell knows?) is rejected.

So then I go through the steps to change my password/username online. Give ‘em all my particulars, including my social security number, which I do not like to do online. They then send me a great long number by email which I put into a little box that let’s me change my password and/or username. (For some unknown reason, they won’t just tell me what the password is; maybe they don’t know.) I make sure I write down the new password in my Notes app on my computer, so that I’ll have it next month when I want to pay my bill again.

But next month, that new password won’t work, and I have to go through all that process again, coming up with another new password, as you can never use a password that you have used in the past.

Well that’s what happened throughout the first, oh, nine months or so of paying my bill online. But the past few months, the situation has gone from bad to worse. Now i can’t even get to the point where I change my password and write it down so it can be rejected next month. Now, after trying the password that worked last month, I’m immediately locked out of my account and have to telephone the company.

Today, I’d had enough. I called the number, got a young woman whose accent was almost impossible to decipher--not because she spoke with a foreign one, but because she spoke like a 15-year-old leader of a junior high popular girl’s clique. After having to have her repeat long strings of words several times, I’d had all this sick-and-tired woman could take. I punched the off button and threw my phone on the floor. She didn’t call back. I don’t blame her.

If and when I recover from the worst attack of anger I’ve had in quite a long time, I’m going to write the company a long letter. Then I’m going to transfer the balance on this credit card to another credit card. Only then, will I pay the balance. Chase is not getting another dime of my money. And I’m going to suggest that they move up to high school to hire their next customer service rep.

Too funny! I know the feeling and can totally relate. Good idea to transfer to another card. Do you belong to a credit union? I never have trouble with that credt card.

It's amazing that there is no such thing as customer service anymore. Not to mention, businesses encourage you to do business online; but, they make it as difficult as possible.

I'm with Mary Lines - switch to a credit union, if you can.

Sorry for the frustration and repeated annoyance making you start from scratch each month. There is NO excuse for that.

As for the cheerleader fast-talking person ... I once told a fast-talker to stop. I asked if she knew what part of the country she was talking to (no ...) and then I told her she was talking to someone from the South. We talk most slowly and listen more slowly, so if she wanted to talk to me, she'd have to slow down. She did and we had a good laugh.

We pay our bills by mail.

Hugs!

I am so sorry that your energy was hijacked in a negative way. I just want to add some ideas that might be helpful. I can't explain why you have a problem logging on each month, and why you get locked out but I can give you some guidelines especially about your comment: "For some unknown reason, they won’t just tell me what the password is; maybe they don’t know.)"

You absolutely do not want to do business with a company that sends your plain text password to you via email. Brian Krebs is a top drawer cyber security analyst (responsible for "breaking" the Target security breach). He has a blog and the following link will take you to his discussion of why you should never do business with a company that sends you your password via an email in plain text https://krebsonsecurity.com/2012/06/naming-and-shaming-the-plaintext-offenders/

There is a website that shames companies that store passwords in plain text and/or sends them to you via email.
They state, "Whether it’s someone hacking into their servers, using a simple flaw in their site or even stealing their backups, over 30% of sites store plain text passwords.

We’re tired of websites abusing our trust and storing our passwords in plain text, exposing us to danger. Here we put websites we believe to be practicing this to shame.

Found a text offender? Found a site that you use on the list? Got any questions? Read our FAQ on what to do next.....But the site says they store my password securely... Your password is yours. It is the means by which you identify yourself to a site. If a site can tell what your password is after you gave it to them, anyone can know what your password is (hackers, disgruntled employees, people stumbling onto it by accident, etc.)." http://plaintextoffenders.com

I absolutely agree that you should not have the aggravations that you have encountered, but be careful of a company who provides your plain text password to you. When you create a password, it should be "hashed" (an algorithm that makes it impossible for anyone to read your password) and stored in this hashed format. No one should be able to read or see your password, and it certainly should not be sent to you via an email. Hope this helps. Best wishes for the New Year!

I know the feeling!! Thought I'd go back to paying bills by mail the old fashion way. Needed to reorder checks from Chase this month and was told it was $45 for two boxes. What?! By maintaining a certain balance, we have a free checking account. I was told we still have free checking but they now charge for checks. Decided to pull all money out and go with B of A. They gave us a better offer, for the moment.

On 12/31/2017, Susan Ramey Cleveland said ...

But on the same site that hashes my password, I’m asked for my SS# each month in order to get a new hashed password that they can reject the next month. Do you suppose they hash my SS# too?

I am at the point with these "ROBO" calls that I answer with a Spanish accent & say "No Comprende" "No call back" (with due respect to my Spanish speaking friends).

I have had several calls wanting to lower my interest rate on my student loans. Rolling in the floor laughing. When I can speak, I politely tell them that I am 72 years old. Do they honestly think I have student loans. Their reply is that somebody gave me as a reference. NOT!! I finally got someone that I could understand who took my name & number out of the system. The skeptic in me says "We shall see".

And Santa Brought Me an Epizootic

Photo in Around the tree Christmas 2017 - Google PhotosFrom left, sister Joanne, me, Joanne’s beautiful Christmas tree, sister Ramey, and niece India (Ramey’s daughter). The three of us and nephew Jed (who is taking the picture) had dinner at Joanne’s house on Christmas Day. On Christmas Eve, daughter Andy and grandson Jesse had a delicious repast at my house. The cooking was tough, but the eating made up for it.

I have been very much under the weather this past week. Still, I believe I got everything done that was expected of me (and then some). The cold has hung on like a a monkey on a cupcake, and my back issues have not improved. But I did Christmas, trying all the while to not cough on anybody or their victuals.

Today I haven’t done much of anything except rest. I don’t know when the Christmas decorations will get put away, but I’ve decided to not worry about that. My goal right now is to see the end of the cold and make it till January 10 when I can see the back doctor again.

I hope everyone had a wonderful holiday week and a Merry Christmas with family and friend.

A LIttle Christmas Cheer

B1I got my Christmas Tree quilt top finished just in time to show it off at the December meeting of
Birmingham Quilters Guild last Monday.

This morning I woke up at 4:30 with a stuffy head and sore throat. I wanted just to go back to sleep, but that wasn't happening. So I got up at 5:00 and made coffee. I was supposed to attend my bee's Christmas brunch today, but after two cups of coffee failed to get me feeling any better, I decided I'd best send my regrets. It could be allergies, I'm not sure. But I didn't want to risk passing a bug onto my friends. So I stayed home.

I almost decided to play Grinch of Scrooge or whatever this Christmas and call the whole thing off. My back problems have continued to get worse until I can barely stay on my feet for even a few minutes. Thank goodness, I was able to get an appointment with a new orthopedist. My old one, whom I have been seeing for more than 20 years, decided he was no longer going to treat Medicare patients. It took more than a month to finally find a new doc that takes Medicare and my insurance, who treats the part of the body that needs treatment, and takes new patients. Then I had to get a referral from my primary care doctor, and that took another week or so. But I now have an appointment for tomorrow. I'm hoping and praying this guy can give me some answers.

I haven't done nearly as much decorating this year as I normally do. Haven't put up a tree. But I have managed to set up a few holly jolly spots here and there. Here are a few pics.

Xmas1I saw this idea on Pinterest or Craftsy or some internet site and decided it would be a great way to display my Santa mugs. I ordered the tiered stand from Hobby Lobby. There were others online, including Wayfair and Ebay. But I found this one and ordered it from Hobby Lobby for only $19.99, much cheaper than the others. The Wayfair version was $89.00 and didn't look any better than this one. It is sitting on my kitchen table that is covered with a fun thrift-store table cloth.

Xmas2A thrift store Christmas tree plate adds some holiday cheer to the mantel.

Xmas12More Christmas tree plates (also from the thrift store)

Xmas7Vann's nutcracker doggie always gets a candy cane this time of year.

Smas4I made this fabric postcard several years ago and loved it so much that I kept it for myself.

Xmas8My best friend since childhood passed away in 2015. He daughter recently gifted me with her mom's Bible. Here it is, turned to the Christmas story, with Mama's crystal beaded rosary on top. I made the little Santa quilt underneath in the early 90s.

Xmas9My Santa sampler is titled "Sew Many Santa." I made in the early 90s too.

Xmas19"Family Portrait" hangs in my foyer where it won't greet many guests this year. We're going to have a quiet Christmas Eve dinner--just me, Andy, and Jesse. Hosting large gatherings is out until I can stand on my feet for more than two minutes without pain.

Xmas18I bought my ceramic Santa and Mrs. Claus more than 30 years ago from a friend of my mama's. They always come out this time of year to help us celebrate.

Xmas11So far, this is the only Christmas tree standing at my house. It's likely to remain the only one.

Xmas13The colors in my patriotic corner cabinet lend themselves nicely to hosting some of my Santa collection.

Xmas14Another red-white-and-blue Santa

Xmas20I found this at Cracker Barrel last holiday season. I left it hanging with the reds, whites, and blues all year. I think it fits perfectly there.

Xmas17Sister Joanne gave me the sweet creche set many years ago.

Xmas6Another thrift store find

Smas3This wicker rocking horse belongs to sister Ramey. I don't recall how it came to live at my house, but it looks nice and jolly dressed in a bright Christmas bow.

Smas5My second Christmas without sweet Sophie. I miss her so much. This is her as an 10-week-old puppy on her way to live with Susan and Vann. The collar that she wore her entire adult life hangs on the photo frame.

Xmas10A Christmas themed jigsaw puzzle has long been a tradition at my house. I'll reveal this one when it's finished

Love all your decorating. The Family Portrait looks terrific....great place to hang it in the foyer. The Santa Sampler is very cute too. I always saw your pics of Sophie as an adult dog...what a cute puppy! Also, I'm going to use your idea of a Christmas puzzle. We will have a large group for Christmas and it's a terrific idea for everyone to mingle and feel comfortable. I hope your new Dr. gives you relief and you have a very Merry Christmas. P.S. Haven't seen or heard about Skipper lately. Is he spending the holiday in China?!

Your decorations are lovely. You find the best things at the thrift shops! You really do so much, and I’m sorry about your pain. Recently had knees & feet burning & pain; doctor said fibro & arthritis. I had whirlwind cleaned house before Thanksgiving & evidently twisted both knees. Whichever it was was so painful, but is better. I took all the Celebrex my stomach could stand. Thus s very quiet Christmas. A lighted tree on my porch appears to be indoors anyway. Praying you have a Merry Christmas & Happy Nee Year, and that your new doctor can help you with pain relief!

I'm a Quilter, not a Miracle Worker

Shorts2

I'm sure that any of you who are known for your experience in the use of a sewing machine has had family and friends request that you do hems, alterations, make them a quilt (like you can just whip one out). I have received plenty of those requests, and  most of them I've fulfilled. However, this most recent request stretches the bounds of my abilities in the fabric arts.

Jesse brought me this pair of shorts last night (and I call them a pair of shorts strictly in the figurative sense; its more like a rag) and asked if I could patch them. PATCH! PATCH THEM! Can you dig it? The holes are bigger than the pieces of fabric that are left intact. And I, because I was tired and hurting and in no mood to explain the arts and sciences of sewing, agreed to try.

Shorts1
Now what am I going to do?

It would be far easier to just make a new par of shorts--or better still buy a new pair. But just one problem. Jesse announced that this is his favorite pair of shorts--and has been for many years, it looks like. Now Jesse isn't one to give on a garment just because it has a little age on it (as was said about Lippy and his hat in the wonderful novel Lonesome Dove), so his heart will break, I'm sure if I'm not able to repair these. Anybody have any suggestions?

Shorts3
And the rear is almost as bad.

Hey Susan, put a neutral patch behind the area, then sew back and forth the entire area in a darning fashion. I have mended many a favorite pair of jeans this way. Use a thread color that will fade into the camo

On 12/07/2017, Linda Enneking said ...

I would do as Mary suggested, bearing in mind that the fabric is most likely pretty well worn out. Jesse will realize that as more damage occurs. But he will be happy with you if you are able to extent the life of his favorites for a little while.

Mary's method works & I've used it many times. I would have Jesse pick up an item made of similar weight camo fabric at a thrift shop and use it for the patches.

We all have to say goodbye at some point. Have a brief ceremony celebrating the joy and comfort he received for so many years of wearing them. Time to pull up the big boy pants (shorts) and get a new pair!

On 12/07/2017, Nancy Morey said ...

The Leed's thrift store had some cameo pants. Used is best to fix used fabric----or maybe one of them will fit---or can be cut off for shorts.

On 12/08/2017, Sue, a Florida Farm Girl said ...

Buy him a pair of spandex shorts to wear under them and he's good to go. I wouldn't even attempt to fix those. Bless you for attempting it.

On 12/08/2017, Dondi Murdock said ...

Um, the thread you could use to patch these worn out shorts will certainly be stronger than the fabric in the material. Jesse needs a new pair of shorts soon, regardless if you can find patches to mend these dead shorts or not. He need a mantra, "My shorts are dying. I will survive," to be repeated until he is strong enough to face a clothing store. I agree with patching them from behind. I used to patch my sons' favorite clothes and my husband's things with this method. This is only a short term fix, however. Short term, Jesse. The truth must be faced, even if it is painful. The new shorts will become dear in time. Good luck and best wishes!

On 12/10/2017, terry said ...

I agree with Mary S. except that I use iron-on mending patches (available at Joanns and Wal-Mart) and zig-zag back and forth.

Terry

On 12/13/2017, Sandy Gail said ...

Been there, done that with my husband's old thread bare pants. As soon as I would get one spot patched another place would tear because the fabric was just too old and weak. I reminded him of the Bible verse about how "one does not put new wine in old wine skins or new fabric in old least the rent be made greater". I also told him that my sewing machine is not a mending machine, it just sews quilts!!!

Words to Live By

But my seam ripper will be at rest today. I’m afraid I won’t be spending time in the sewing room today. Too much to do. Christmas is getting
closer and closer.

Almost Finished

Border

I have to join the border blocks and then join them to the quilt top, and the Christmas Tree quilt will be ready for quilting. Jesse came into the sewing room just now and looked at it and asked, "Is that going to be our Christmas tree this year?" And I'll tell you truth: If it was quilted, it just might be. I am not looking forward to putting up a tree, a very difficult task with a bad back.

The top will turn out to be 80" x 90", much larger than I expected. Actually, when I ordered the pattern, I guess I wasn't paying attention because I thought I was ordering a pattern for a wall hanging. It will be plenty big enough for a queen-size bed, which both Jesse and I have. So I guess it will end up being a holiday season bed quilt for one of us.

Rainy day here, and I'm hearing the "S" word from some of our forecasters for later in the week. Just flurries, but still pretty unusual for this time of year.

Back to the sewing machine while Anna cleans downstairs.

Rugs and Pugs

IMG_1066

After church yesterday, Ramey and I did some Christmas shopping. I didn’t buy any gifts. My back was hurting so badly, I couldn’t concentrate. But on my way out of whatever store we were in (I think it was TJ Maxx) I saw this rug and grabbed it. I wanted it for my foyer. However, I found out it wasn’t appropriate for the foyer because it’s slippery. So I’ll use it in the living room someplace. Not sure where or how yet--that is if it lasts that long. I’ve already had to run Taco off of it. He was using it for a scratching rug.

Poor Skipper has hurt his dew claw again. Can’t see a vet in until 1:30 this afternoon, almost two more hours. So I’m trying to keep him still until then. Not easy to keep a wiggle worm with a hurt toe still.

I was planning to do some straightening up and Christmas decorating today. But you know what they say about the best laid plans. And mine weren’t that well laid.
