Blogging Has Its Benefits

Halloweenies

I met Barbara several years ago through my blog when she made her first comment. Since then we have forged a good friendship that has gone beyond blogging to sharing family happening as well as our mutual love for quiltmaking. Barbara has continued to be one of my most loyal readers at Blackberry Creek Home Arts, and she rarely fails to leave me a comment.

I just wanted to show this wonderful packet of Halloween prints Barbara sent me. She knows I love Halloween and that I collect Halloween fabrics. I love them all and have spent some time handling them and enjoying them. One day the will each find a home in a quilt. But not today. Today I'm going to work some more on the Christmas Tree quilt.

I have some of these fabrics myself, but haven't used any of them yet. Hope to get one quilt done in time for next Halloween using a vintage group from Thimbleberries.

We Gathered Together

TreeeMy Christmas Tree is growing.

'Twas a wonderful Thanksgiving that was had at The Yellow House. Both sisters and one nephew joined daughter Andy, grandson Jesse, and I in a feast o'plenty. I followed through on my plan to have most of the meal catered. I made the chicken and dressing as well as a delicious broccoli salad, so the workload was quite manageable. Besides for the great catered dishes, Ramey brought her delicious corn casserole, and Joanne and Jed brought carrot cake. Aside for the tons of leftovers still in the refrigerator that guilt prevents me from tossing, everything went well indeed.

So now that one holiday is over, it's back to the sewing room. I've worked all morning on the Christmas Tree Quilt. I have a couple more rows to piece, rows to join, and then I'll be ready to make the candy cane border. I'm thinking I might have it done in time to show at my guild's Christmas brunch meeting in a couple of weeks, if, as my daddy used to say, I don't hit a snag.

I think I've spent all the time at the sewing machine that my back will allow. So for that reason, and because Skipper insists, I'm going downstairs and do a little hand applique until to start dinner.

Who Invited Them?

219601_largeThe Pain Monsters are ready to celebrate Thanksgiving.

I thought I was making things easy on myself this holiday season. I have it all arranged so that the only thing I have to cook is the chicken and dressing, because everybody (especially me and Jesse) loves my chicken and dressing. And dressing is one thing that you can never predict the taste, texture, ingredients, etc. I like to play it safe on dressing--homemade, not order in.

I went shopping yesterday to get all the ingredients for my dish. It was the most trying shopping trip yet. I truly had my doubts at the end if I was going to make it back home. But I did, of course. Although on vacation from work this week, Jesse was gone for the day, so I had no help bringing the bags upstairs from the basement. (I should have waited until he was home; I know.) It took me four hours to get them all up. That was it for me and just about any kind of movement for the rest of the day. Even getting up to go to the bathroom or to feed Skipper or let him out and in was a test of true grit.

This morning, everything hurts--even the palms of my hands. The thought of getting that chicken and dressing made (or even setting the table for seven or nine people {I’m still not sure how many of coming}) seems like someone has asked me to hop on one bare foot up Mt. Crumpet and subdue the Grinch before he steals the roast beast.

So I have a plan. In order to get through the next 36 hours or so, I’m going to count my blessings. At least once an hour I’m going to concentrate on one new thing that I’m thankful for. If that doesn’t run the pain monsters away, at least I’ll have some good things to think about while I’m struggling. And the first good thing I’m going to concentrate on is a couple of Ibuprofen.

Happy Day Before Turkey Day, everyone.

So sorry for all your pain. I can only imagine how tough it is to shop and cook with that much pain. Counting your blessings is a good idea....right behind taking ibuprofen! May you wake up feeling better tomorrow. Blessings.

Be gone, unwelcome pain mponsters, one and all. May you have no power there.

Wishing you and your family a wonderful Thanksgiving!

Dear girl, I'm so sorry you're having such a hard time with the pain right now. Just let others do most of the work and take it as easy as you can. Hope you have a wonderful Thanksgiving.

Sew Blessed

Treee

I'm getting toward the bottom of the Christmas Tree quilt. Of course, when the center is done, I'll still have to stitch the candy cane border and add it. But that shouldn't take long. I have all the pieces cut. I'm sure to have this baby done by Christmas. Then after the holidays, when Lena has finished quilting "Heartwarming" And "Star Spangled Summer," I'll take her this one.

Hat

I also got a start on "Autumn Abundance." I decided to do the easiest block first, The Pilgrim's Hat. It has just a few large pieces. I haven't hand appliqued in a while, so I have to get back in the swing of that.

I hope you are all looking forward to an abundant and happy Thanksgiving. I'm not doing all the cooking that I've done in years past. I'm sticking by what I've said for the past, I don't know, eight or ten years. "This is the last year I'm going to do this," I would announce to the family as I tried to stay upright and functioning through the consuming of the feast. "Yeah, yeah," they would reply. "You say that every year."

But I'm finally sticking to it. Well, actually, I'm tapering off. I'm still going to make a big pan of my chicken and dressing. Most everything else I'm ordering from a local restaurant, except for Ramey's corn casserole, which is ot die in the dirt for, and Joanne is bringing something too. Salad, I think. I might even be a bad environmentalist and resort to throw-away dinnerware and cups. I haven't decided for sure about that yet.

Back to the Christmas Tree quilt top.

The quilts are looking good!
Glad you are taking it easy for Thanksgiving. Laura and I will be by ourselves. She really doesn't do poultry, so we are having BLT's, with really good bacon and thick, fresh bread. She does insist on green bean casserole. Not sure how those will go together!

Looking forward to seeing the Abundance quilt progress. Last year was my 1st for saying I'm not doing this next year. Just so much work for 1 when we have a house full. This year I started early. Cleaned house Sun. and washed dogs today. (Yep, I do that every 2 weeks. We have 5 dogs on 2 acres.) Running for last stop at grocery store now. Will spend the next 2 days making everything ahead except turkey and potatoes. So I think I have it under control. Have a blessed and relaxing day.

Love your progress on the sweet Christmas tree and on the pilgrim's hat, too! Applause!

I've got the blocks and squares of the AA quilt sewn into their diagonal rows and half have their setting triangles sewn on!

Happy Thanksgiving week to you and your family!

Rest in Peace

My heart is sad. We lost Nancy Zieman yesterday after her long battle with cancer. I worked with her on her books during the 90s. Nancy was a gracious and talented lady. She gave so much to so many.

In lieu of cards and flowers, her family suggests that donations be made in Nancy’s name to Wisconsin Public Television (https://wptschedule.org/Donate/)

Quite a Haul

I garnered a bunch of great goodies yesterday from various sources. First of all, I made it to quilters guild meeting yesterday. Although I wasn't able to stay for the entire meeting (my back started complaining loudly, so I had to leave the discomfort of the folding chair), I did get a chance to peruse the "free table." And look at the treasures I amassed.

Fab2Small scraps from the guild's "free table," which might or might not work into my "Autumn Abundance" quilt.

Fab3I also found three 7" squares of great Halloween fabric. This is my favorite.

Fab4

Fab5

I also picked up a back issue of Cloth Paper Scissors magazine from the free table, but it didn't make it into the photo. There was more, but I didn't want to be a hog.

After I sat in the car in the parking lot for a while, I was able to drive on in relative comfort. On the way home as I neared the exit that leads to my favorite Chinese restaurant, Mr. Wang's, I obeyed my instincts and exited. It happens that Mr. Wang's is located just a few doors up from Hobby Lobby, so first I ducked in there and made a quick scan of their fabrics department. Here's what I found for "Autumn Abundance."

Fab1I plan to use gentle autumn colors--not the bright oranges, purples, and pea greens we see in lots of autumn quilts. I think of this quilt as more Thanksgivingish than Halloweenish.

I was in H.L. just long enough to choose these fabrics and have them cut, but that was too long. The pain was back. But I made it on up to Mr. Wang's, filled my plate with scrumptious offerings from the buffet, and sat back in a comfy booth to enjoy. The pain mostly went away while I was sitting there. When I got home, I had these goodies in my mailbox.

Fab7The Abundance pattern, which I'll use to create my version, "Autumn Abundance" (working title), and a little quilt pattern that I saw online and had to have. I had forgot that I even ordered it until I saw it yesterday.

After I had emptied the mailbox, I came in to greet Skipper and the kitties. Then I assumed the position on the couch with Skipper, and we didn't do much more moving until bedtime (except to feed Skip and let him out and in and out and in).

Now to the sewing machine to work on the Christmas Tree (which has no real working title yet; I just call it The Christmas Tree.)

The Abundance quilt is so cute. It is calling my name. I have 3 big unfinished projects I want to complete before committing to or even thinking about starting another one. If I buy the pattern now, I can keep fall in my sewing room all next spring (working on it) right? I'm weakening....thank you for the inspiration.

On 11/15/2017, Barbara Anne said ...

Oh SCORE!! Would you like some equal size squares of Halloween fabrics to go with the 3 you found on the free table?

Have you considered taking some sort of pillow to guild meetings so you're more comfortable? Perhaps tha king that are sold to those who sit on bleachers?

Sorry about your ongoing back pain.

Hugs!

Working on the Christmas Tree

XTree1

I got a bunch of work done today, sewing the pieces together for the Christmas Tree quilt. My cleaning lady Anna was here, after being away for several weeks because of a family crisis. The house was really in need of a good cleaning, and she gave us one. And while she cleaned, Skipper and Taco and I chilled in the sewing room. Well, Skipper and Taco chilled; I worked. Bella hid out in one of her secret hideout places.

So Anna is gone now, and the furbies and I have exited the sewing room in favor of the living room couch. Jesse is home from work early but says he doesn’t want supper because he had a big lunch. I have a chicken pot pie in the oven for me, courtesy of Mrs Callender, (for me since I not only didn’t have a big lunch, i didn’t have any lunch at all), and that’s all the cooking I plan to do this evening.

I have been watching the “Stranger Things” series on Netflix, so I think I’ll get back to that for a while. I started with Season One, although I saw it when it was new. I’m now two or three episodes into Season Two. I love that series. It’s like “The Gonnies” meets “Fringe.” There’s a super cast of kid actors, and David Harbour and Winona Ryder are fantastic as the main grownups. Those of you who like strange stuff will no doubt love “Stranger Things.” And if you’re one of those who hates all movies and books that even so much as hints at “scary,” you might want to close your eyes when the Upside Down monster appears. He’s pretty darn scary.

The aroma of pot pie is wafting by my nose, so I figure I’m about to hear the oven timer go ding ding ding. Everyone have a fine Hump Evening. (Can you believe we’ve already entered the second week of November?)

I should tell you that I got hooked on making this Christmas tree quilt from reading your blog. The minute I saw your post I had to find and order the pattern and I dropped all else to work on it. So maybe it's a karma thing? LOL. Your quilt is looking good! I agree with you though, there were a lot of squares to cut out.

As If I Didn’t Have Enough To Do

23318970_10208905933360534_6541009424832316003_n

A quilter on Facebook finished this quilt and posted a photo. With all the projects I have stacked up (and so little time I’m able to spend sewing), you’d think I could admire it and walk on. But no. Not me. After conducting a Google search, I found the dang pattern and ordered it. It’s called “Abundance,” and I found it on Ebay.

I love how they use fabrics in colors other than tradition fall colors. I might not do that, though. After all, I love fall colors too. I love every thing Autumn! I’m thinking maybe traditional fall colors, but muted--which, come to think of it, is sort of what they did.

Wonderful pattern! I'm so glad you found it, too. That applique might just suit you well when you need to sit and do hand work. I do have to say the pink border doesn't appeal to me at all.

Enjoy!

Back in the Sewing Room

Foot2

I've had some really bad days recently dealing with the fibro an especially the back pain. But today, so far, I'm feeling better. I'm going to see if my good fortune will continue through a little bit of quiltmaking work.

Many thanks to you who offered to help with the squares for the Christmas Tree quilt. I do appreciate the kindness and generosity. However, I have the fabrics already lined up for that quilt, so I guess I'll keep cutting. Just a few more to go, so I think I'll make it.

But just look at my poor iron!

Iron

Jesse used my iron to press some synthetic-fiber banners than he bought for some reason that he did not relate to me. He said he didn't even know that irons have more than one heat setting. Obviously, his lack of iron-savvy had a detrimental effect on my iron, and I'm going to have to order some sole-plate cleaner right away, and hope it takes the melted plastic off. For now, I'm using my other Rowenta that leaks, making it impossible for me to use the steam feature. But you should see the banner pieces that Jesse "ironed." Not much left of them.

Poor iron! I have two irons and if others need an iron, they don't use the one in my sewing room!

Might an elastic back brace help your back pain? I was given one at my last job and know they are available online. Look under "work back brace" and you'll find what I'm talking about.

Wishing you well.

Susan, I accidentally ironed over a plastic bag. Called Lynn and she said to put iron in the freezer for awhile-----the plastic peeled right off.
After that, heavily salt a piece of wax paper and iron over that.
I have some iron cleaner you can borrow, if you come Monday.

Bummer!! I use Faultless Hot Iron Cleaner that you can get at most grocery stores or Wally world. Don't know if that would work on the plastic but it gets other gunk off.

I’ve read that Magic Eraser can clean iron sole plates. But I haven’t tried. Might be worth while to see.
