Summer's End

Starquilt2

I think it appropriate and a neat coincidence that today, as we usher in autumn and bid adieu to summertime, I finished my "Star Spangled Summer" quilt top. In fact, at almost exactly the time of the equinox, 3:02 p.m., CDT, I put in the last stitches. And here's what I learned from this quilt: The next time I make a quilt whose blocks consist of teeny sharp points, I'm sashing that sucker. Joining those blocks was a pain. And every place that points happen to meet is an another happy coincidence. Making the blocks was fun; putting them together made me want to scream. And I lost count of how many times I stuck myself with pins.

Happy Fall, Y'all!

Comfort Case

PC1

I haven't got around to working on the summer quilt yet. I've been busy this morning making this pillowcase for a Facebook friend. She is making pillowcases for use by the chemo patients where her husband goes for chemo. I thought it a wonderful cause and a way to use a smidgen of my fabric stash. I pray that whoever uses it receives healing and comfort.

PC2

I adore this rabbit fabric. I don't remember where I got. I only know I've had it for a long time.

PC3

I used the sausage/burrito/rollup pillowcase technique to make this. The instructions are rampant online. Just google one of those terms or all three. The technique is easy as can be, and you have no raw edges when you're finished.

Delightful pillow cases and what a worthy cause.

Am wishing all well who get these cheery pillowcases.

The rabbit fabric reminds me of Tula Pinks fabric designs. Your pillow case is lovely. Just using it will make someone feel better.

What a beautiful idea. I used that pattern to make holiday pillowcases for my grandchildren... they love them and they are so easy to make.

Autumn Quilts

IMG_0984
I have some of my Autumn quilts out and displayed. "Dancing Leaves" looks nice, I think, hanging the foyer.

Skipper and I enjoyed snuggling under “Autumn Charm” last night while I read and Skipper snoozed.

I have a few more Autumn quilts that will probably make it out of hiding before the season is over--I hope.

Still not quite finished with the “Star Spangled Summer” top. I plan to finish it tomorrow while Anna is here cleaning. But today, I have to run to the grocery store, then I plan to spend the afternoon back under “Autumn Charm” reading Great Expectations. (I’m sure Skipper will get in a bit more snoozing too.) Reading The Little Stranger, which I finished yesterday, put me in a Charles Dickens kind of mood and I decided to reread this wonderful classic, starring Pip, Miss Faversham, and many more wonderful characters

Happy Autumn, everyone. Not official for a few more days, but it’s definitely autumn-like here, with cool nights and warm, dry days. We’re even seeing little hints of color among the trees and foliage.

Your quilts are very fallish. I do not have any in this color but do have MANY. Vintage and new. Lots of them are hand quilted.

Bon Jour, Mes Amis!

We survived Irma. After days of preparing and wondering if we'd be blown away, the old girl whizzed through here, gave us buckets full of rain (but no flooding) and hardly any wind. Not even a tornado warning in this part of the state. Talk about anticlimactic.

But our hearts are broken for those who got the worst Irma had to offer, including Florida and the Caribbean. I was thinking recently about the last vacation Vann and I took together. It was a 10-day Caribbean cruise with stops on St. Maarten and St.Thomas. How sad to think of those green paradise islands that are now just piles of brown rubble. And all the people without homes and possession in the Caribbean as well as in Florida, especially the Keys. God's blessing and comfort to all of them.

I have been quilting, sporadically and in short bursts, but it all counts. Right? Here is what I have accomplished so far on “Star Spangled Summer.” Over halfway there.

Half

The Ramey sisters, including the middle sister (me),  have no been faring too well these past couple of weeks. Ramey hurt her shoulder, arm, and hand and had to seek medical treatment for that. Joanne was in the hospital a couple of nights with with a digestive upset (but she’s fine now), and I, well, what can I tell you?  Aside from the back pain that is now so bothersome that I can hardly walk, my mitral valve condition has also been acting up. I haven’t gone to the doctor for either one, which I know, I know--I should. But every time I go for either problem, they just do a lot of tests and tell me “there’s not much that can be done about it.” So as much trouble as it is for me to get ready and go someplace, I don’t see the need.

So now, after a little time at the sewing machine and a little time at the computer, I think I’ll read a bit until time to start dinner. I’m currently read The Little Stranger by Sarah Waters. It’s a haunted house book, and lots of you know how I do love a good old haunted house book, especially at this time of year. I’ll review it further when I’m finished. But for now, if you’re interested, you can find it on Amazon or any other the other bookseller sites. I would have included a link here, but my computer won’t let me.

Thankful you were spared severe damage. Such a terrible thing in Texas and Florida. Be sure to protect your quilts. I love them. Have several old and new. Need to try get rid of some, but no one wants to pay what they are worth.

I am so glad that you all were safe and sound, except for rain. Laura, in Charleston, was about the same. The part of Charleston she is in had rain and wind, but no flooding or tornadoes. Tell you, my heart could have done without that excitement!
I knew Joanne was is the hospital, but goodness, poor Ramey! I do side with you about going/not going to the doctor. When they run test after test, always coming up with the same answer, it is just more stress on our bodies. Just getting up, getting dressed, getting to the doctor and all the waiting around is just too much sometimes!
I do love you quilt. I have always made small ones, mostly scrap quilts and potholders. Even made a few checkerboards.
Hope you get some rest and relief for your back.

It's good to hear your area wan't hard hit by Irma and I share your concerns for those who suffered losses.

Well done on Star Spangled Summer!! It's growing and is lovely!

Wishing you Ramey sisters well!

Hugs!

Hi Susan. I am happy to know you were spared from the storm damage and we are relieved our family members in Florida are also o.k. You are moving right along on the stars! I am working away on the grandmother's flower garden by hand. In the mail yesterday I got a lovely box of calicos from sweet Barbara H. and spent the eve last night from my bed cutting out pieces from some of the fabric. Today I will begin to sew them...it is a lot of work with cutting out the paper templates and fabric! I do so understand about your pain issues as I have had such a hard time this summer finding out what the heck is wrong with me. The back, hip, legs, buttocks pain is just horrid and it is hard to explain to folks just how frustrating and depressing it all is to deal with. Degenerative bone disease and 6 bulging discs are doing me in. The hand sewing is good medicine for me...it takes the mind off all of it and also like you, those many doctor visits are not easy either. I follow your blog every single day but have not commented much as sometimes, like today, when I hit post, it all disappears :(. Take good care, always thinking of you...Trudy

Hello Susan, I am so thrilled to hear that you missed the majority of Irma except for the rain. I am totally in awe of all of you people who face Hurricanes. When we had our massive earthquake here in Christchurch, NZ I have never been so scared in all of my life. I suppose you are aware of a hurricane coming but boy so much pressure you must feel.
Your Star Spangled Banner quilt is truly beautiful and is going to be lovely all finished.

Cleaning/Sewing Day

Row1

I can at least count on every other Wednesday to spend some time in the sewing room, even if I don't make it any of the other days. I have to get out of Anna's way so she can clean.

This (above) is what I've got done so far today, the first row, counting from the bottom, finished of Star Spangled Summer. Some of my points don't quite meet--but as Georgia Bonesteel used to say, you''ll never see it from a galloping horse.

I also got the binding sewn onto Rainbow Hearts and almost have it sewn to the back. I'll show it when finished. It will be my cuddle quilt for last year, a little late. Our guild year starts back next Monday, we skip August, and I plan to turn it in and get to work immediately on a cuddle quilt for this year.

Praying for all the folks in the Houston area, the folks in the path of Irma, the folks who aren't sure if they're in the path of Irma, the folks affected by the fires out west, our Dreamers, and anybody else who is in the midst of life's slings and arrows.

Well cone on all of the sewing you're getting done!

I'm chugging along on the blocks for DS2's quilt and it's mostly purples. Am pondering what quilting pattern would suit my young 30-something son?

Yes, prayers for all who need it. Amen and amen.

Hugs!

Those start blocks are fabulous Susan. I do love that pattern. I wish I was able to count on one day that I know I would be able to hide in my sewing room. I would get so much more done.
The hurricanes that are happening over the USA at the moment are so scary.
I certainly hope and pray for all who are in those areas.

I've always loved stars and yours are wonderful. I'm trying my best to get a sewing day...but haven't gotten around to it yet! Even with a new sewing space!

Signs of Autumn

Gedc0983

Leaves are beginning to fall, and I’ve seen bits of color here and there in the past few days. Oh, and the little yellow butterflies are everywhere. Then this morning, my yard man told me that a cold front is on the way. Temps in the low 70s in a few days.

Needless to say, I love autumn. The weather, the color, the smells, the feeling in the air. And the autumn holidays, Halloween and Thanksgiving, are my favorites too.

In preparation, I’m going to hang an autumn quilt in my foyer, where the Pink Houses quilt hangs right now. The autumn quilt will stay up until time to hang Santa and Mrs. Claus.

So come on Autumn. I’m ready for you.
