Monday, Monday

Sundown in my hometown, Leeds, Alabama, looking west on Parkway Drive. Photo by Steve Goodson.
No big happenings around here this weekend. I did a little yard work on Saturday, then watched some TV movies until time to feed Jesse and get him off to work. This was his weekend to work night shift.
Yesterday, my sister Ramey and I, along with nephew Reed and niece India, went to church. Then Ramey, Reed, and I went to Cracker Barrel for a pancake brunch. Then home, where I read until time to get Jesse's supper. Last night was his last night shift until next week.
Today is laundry and vacuum day. I've got the laundry going, but I'm stalling on vacuuming. That's one of my hardest jobs. But with Skipper and Sophie tracking in dirt and trash, I really should vacuum every day. But I don't.
Happy Monday, everyone.

Happy Monday to you, too! It sounds like you and your kin had a nice Sunday.

What a glorious sunset photo and kudos to Steve Goodson!

Our vacuum is idle, too, as I'm just not inclined to upset an already painful left knee. Have no notion of what I did to make it hurt, but it does. Bother!

Hugs!

Final Doggie

Dog

I got started on the last dog for my "Knick Knack Patty Wack" quilt. I thought I would finish it today. But then  I went out in the backyard with the animals and decided, while I was out there, I would trim some limbs (my backyard looks like a jungle). So now I'm so tired I can hardly type. Guess the block will have to wait till tomorrow. Or later today maybe.

Of course the blocks aren't finished with the piecing of the dogs. They still have to have their muzzles, eyes, noses, and bones added, the blanket stitching done, and then surrounded by the doghouse pieces. Maybe I'll have it all done by the next quilt show in 2017. I hope.

I read the title and thought something happened to your dogs! I love your dog quilts. They have so much personality.
Give your doggies a hug from me for National Dog Day!

Good for you! Yes, sometimes spoons must be used for the more mundane tasks of hacking thru the undergrowth - literally.

When the spoon drawer is restocked, that charming dog block will be ready for you (unless a cat has moved some of the block parts). DH installed a screen door on my sewing room so no 4 legged family members can join me in my tiny and very full sewing room.

You do such lovely applique and embroidery that I'm sure you'll soon have these dogs properly adorned and ready for their close-ups! Remember, "a bit of a stitch" daily gets even hand stitched whole cloth quilts finished.

I'm about to sew the outer borders on my Santa quilt!!

Upstairs Progress

Sophie's rump makes a good seat, Skipper finds.
Almost finished putting back all the stuff that goes in the storage room after the deep cleaning. I still have a ton of stuff to bring down for donation, but I'm going to wait until a truck is scheduled to come by then put it all on the front porch. It's just too grueling to take it myself, as I have the last several loads--all those steps and lifting. Even when I'm in apparent "remission."

The pain level is still hanging at between 2 and 4 (with an occasional 1) depending on what position I'm in (standing, walking, sitting, reclining) and my level of activity--which is almost like no pain at all compared with what I went through during my off-cymbalta period. But I still tire quickly, and I don't want to tempt the Fibromonster to bring the heavy pain back. So I try to work in short bursts, 15 or 20 minutes, then a short rest.

I also have a cart full of stuff to take to the quilt guild free table in September. Ah, man! Purging feels wonderful.

I heartily agree that it feels so good to purge. I've even reached the point where I would just rather donate than think about a yard sale!

Good for you! Hope there are strong young folks who will move the last of the donations to the porch when the time comes. You're wise to pay attention to your spoons, to rest when needed, and not to exhaust yourself. My mother inside my head still tells me I need to do this and that, but I have to remind her that I didn't vote to be forever tired.

Love the picture of Skipper and the ever patient Sophie!

I Have Seen the Yellow Butterfly

P1170984A sure sign that autumn is coming, at least in these parts, is the appearance of hundreds of Little Yellow Butterflies fluttering about. I have been seeing them all week, every time I leave the house. I have no idea what his real name is. We have always just called him "The Little Yellow Butterfly." My daddy used to say, "When you see the Little Yellow Butterfly crossing the road, you know autumn is coming."

And a welcome sight that little fellow has been this week. As I've said many times, autumn is my very favorite season. I just wish it lasted longer.

It's still plenty hot and humid. We've had lots of rain this week, and it feels like a Turkish bath outside. But summer's days are numbered.

Lovely photo! I'd not heard that about yellow butterflies, but they're here, too. The forecast rains missed us completely so that was a bummer.

Today is cooler, lower humidity, and really breezy so will soon hop in the car for a quick trip to the library. Back home, it will be lunch, then sewing the second two sides of the next to last border on the Santa quilt and I hope to cut the outer border before my spoons are gone. You know how that can go ...

Hugs!

There haven't been many butterflies of any type here this summer. There also haven't been many fireflies, which is really unusual. No fuzzy caterpillars, no squirrels looking for nuts to bury, the leaves haven't even started to change yet. It is just humid constantly, which I cannot tolerate. It messes with my arthritis, which, in full circle, messes with the old fibro monster. I'm hoping Autumn will be less humid.

Bed Thief

This is the bed Daisy sleeps in when she visits. She had another bed a lot like this one, which Skipper destroyed. So I got her this one.

Daisy hasn't been here in several weeks, and in that time Bella has claimed the bed. She sleeps in it all day when she isn't on the cat condo or begging for treats. She even sleeps in it at night in my bedroom where all the other Furbies sleep. She never slept in my room until she took over Daisy's bed.

I'm not sure what's going to happen when Daisy comes back for a visit.

Cute! Good luck working things out peaceably when Daisy visits next!

Our two cats loved their "kitty cups" but a few years ago for reasons known only to themselves, they stopped using them at all. They cannot tell me why either. ;)

As a have said before, carl looks absolutely ferocious when he is like this and makes me wonder if he will not 'go after' me next in line.... luci gets very put upon when it happens, like 'I wasn't doing anything and look how he is!!' the rest of the day they are fine, like nothing happened....

Sad Day

My sister Ramey's dog Gretchen has crossed over the Rainbow Bridge. Gretchen came to live with Ramey 15 years ago, just showed up in her yard one day. She was truly a part of our family. We will miss her.

progress with a lower-case p

So I'm back on the Cymbalta, and my pain level has decreased quite a lot. Unfortunately, the drug does nothing for the crushing fatigue, but at least the pain is manageable now.

I'm still in the process of purging. I have delivered many loads to our local thrift store, and have another thrift store lined up to come and cart away the old furniture from the storage room. Then Jesse will be able to get the soiled carpet out of that room, and I can line up someone to put down a new floor covering. Things happen slowly at The Yellow House these days, but that's the way it is. I'm learning to accept it.

What I've Been Reading
Fostergrave_225_265A couple of winters ago, I got on a kick of reading Sharyn McCrumb novels. I read all her "ballad novels" and a couple others, I believe. But for some reason, I never got around to The Ballad of Tom Dooley. This week, I read it, and I believe it to be her best book so far.

Although technically a work of fiction, McCrumb did a tremendous amount of meticulous research to come up with a retelling of this infamous tale that is probably as true to life as it is possible to get to a story that lives on mostly through legend and in various versions. This book tells of the murder of young Laura Foster in 1866 in Wilkes County, North Carolina.  Tom Dula (Dooley) was eventually hanged as Laura's murderer, but McCrumb, though her research, comes up with a different version in which Dooley bears only a part of the guilt for the crime.

I love Appalachian stories, and I loved Sharyn McCrumb's book about this famous murder. And I believe that her conclusion makes the most sense of any telling of it I have heard or read.

Photo above: Laura Foster's final resting place.

I'm glad to hear that Cymbalta helps your pain so much. Please do sing out if you find anything helps the deep fatigue as I need that, too.

Be sure to take another look at the furniture you intend to donate as a coat of paint might make one or more furniture pieces ideal for your porch, as a side table somewhere, a coffee table, or more useful storage. I'd love to clear out something to store all of Christmas inside (but out of sight) so I didn't have to schelp boxes downstairs and across the yard.

Thanks for the book review, too. Sounds interesting!

Hugs!

Slogging Along

I enjoyed a great quilting bee meeting on Monday at Rita's house. She served us a wonderful pound cake and fruit and an olive dip to die for. She shared her recipe for the dip, and I intend to make it soon.

Below are some photos of our show-and-tell session. I didn't take anything for show-and-tell. I have been too busy purging my house, getting ready to get some new flooring and have some painting done. It's a slow process.

Speaking of the purging--did you ever start a project and get to the point where you think you've done nothing short of plunging yourself into a hopeless mess? That's what I feel like. My guest room is stacked to the rafters with boxes of stuff, some of which still has to be delivered to the thrift store. I've taken three loads already, but there is more to go.

I'm just so slow. By the time I have packed one box or carried one bag downstairs, it's rest time. No kidding. That's about how much stamina my body has these days. But then after a short rest, I'm ready to go again for another short session. I long for these days of yore when I could clean my entire house on a Saturday morning, then have fun with family or friends in the afternoon and evening.

I think my main problem is that I have never come to grips with my condition. After almost 15 years, I still think it's going to somehow miraculously go away. But it just keeps getting worse. Some of my friends and acquaintances who share this or similar conditions accept their fate and adjust accordingly. I fight the "slow down and take it easy" directive. I'm afraid if I slow down, I'll never be able to speed back up again. And that should be ok too, I guess. But somehow, it isn't. There's too much to be done.

Oh well, oh well, oh well.

Oh, honey, do I ever hear you! Monday I was more tired than I've been in my life and had only done little tasks (like make a pitcher of iced tea, then fold a load of laundry) during the day, but was near to tears with exhaustion before 9p. It was 16 years ago that I was diagnosed with lupus and my doctor then told me the first 10 years were the easiest and that has been true. He also said because of my age at time of diagnosis and because I have a light complexion, I had a 98% chance of having a mild case of lupus. If this is mild, my heart goes out to those who have it worse than I do. Between arthritis and the overwhelming fatigue, this is bad enough. It still breaks my heart than I can no longer work as a nurse.

Please forgive yourself that you can no longer meet your own expectations for what you should be able to do in a day. You'd forgive a friend who was faced with what you're faced with. Be nice to you! When I think back to all I could do in times past, I have to remind myself, I didn't vote to have lupus or do anything to deserve it (really, that isn't something I ever thought!). I now have to listen to my body and stop when I must. Unlike you, a short rest seldom re-energizes me.

Now to nicer things ...
The first quilt you showed is near and dear to my heart because that sweet little girl in the blocks was on several of my childhood birthday cards! The lovely quilt with the quarter-square triangles in the center of the Courthouse Steps blocks is blissfully serene and just lovely. The other four quilts are delightful with the patriotic string piecing, the fox faces, and the Streak of Lightening set. Is there a story about the quilt in the fourth photo? That is so interesting!

Since you're donating so many things, do they have a truck that can come to your home to get the boxes? Some organizations do that.

Well, book written so it's time for big hugs. Do you know if you're not careful, you can type "bug huts"? :)

Big hugs!

Guild Traditions

Prez Quilt

We have a tradition in our quilters guild that each outgoing president is presented with quilt blocks made by members, blocks that she will eventually put together to make her own President's Quilt. Each and every past president of Birmingham Quilters Guild has her own President's Quilt. That's a photo of my President's Quilt above.

When my term as guild president was up in the summer of 1996, I asked for Sister's Choice blocks. I have always loved that pattern, and I felt the name was appropriate for a group of women (I don't believe we had any male members at the time) who share as much of our lives as we do.

Another "changing of the guard" tradition in our guild is that the outgoing president often makes little handmade gifts for her board members. I recall that I made appliqued tea towels for everyone, and the process took me forever. I don't know exactly how many I made, around 20 or 25, I think.

Chatelaine

This year our outgoing president, Carolyn, made these little chatelaines for her board members (photo above). Isn't it precious. I'll use it to hold a small pair of scissors for my downstairs sewing kit.

I have a project going on here at The Yellow House that I wish I had never started. Never mind that it's one that had to be done; I still wish I'd never started it. Upstairs, adjoining my guest bedroom there is a small storage room. Over the years, we've used that room for just that--storage. Whatever didn't have a place somewhere else (or in the basement) went into the storage room.

When Bella and Taco can to live with me and Jesse, that room took on double duty--as storage room and litter box room. Jesse is very conscientious about keeping the box scooped and cleaned, so I don't know why the kitties found it necessary to use alternate spots (behind things and unseeable without moving heavy pieces of furniture) as littler box pee-pee alternatives. When the room began to smell, we knew something had to be done.

Unfortunately that room, like the bedroom next to it, is carpeted. Jesse tried cleaning the carpet (several times) and disinfecting it with a wide array of various products. He has managed to get the smell just about gone, but the carpet is severely stained. Besides, the very idea of just how yucky the situation was behooves me to get that carpet out of there.

Problem is, the carpet cannot be removed until the items that call the room home are removed. So that is what I've been doing for the past week or so. There are several storage cabinets full of seemingly endless stuff. I have made several trips to the thrift store with loads to deliver--and piled what I want to keep in the adjoining bedroom.

Now it's up to Jesse to get the heavy stuff (cabinets, storage bins, chests, etc.) out. Then he will pull the old carpet up and throw it away. Then I'm going to get Lowe's or somebody to come in a put down some linoleum. I don't plan to put those big, heavy cabinets (which were Vann's doing) back in the room. They're going to the thrift store too.

I've already given Taco and Bella a good talking to, and they have promised to mend their ways and never make a mess again. I trust them. I have to trust them.

Meanwhile, I'm exhausted, and the job isn't even halfway done.

What a lovely Sister's Choice quilt you made from the blocks you received! Love the idea of making handmade gifts for the board members, too. Cute chatelaines!

Oh, honey! I SO envy the storage room you have upstairs! Just reading about it made me turn probably 12 shades of green. :)

I wish you well with the mighty undertaking you've had to start. Bear in mind it will be well worth it. It will. Perhaps the process can be sped up by having strong guys from the neighborhood or church come on a certain day to move everything from the storage room to the basement. From there you can take your time dealing with it. Just a thought.

Big hugs!

You might want to think about having the cats checked for urinary tract infection. Sometimes that will cause them to stop using the litter box. Good luck with the room remodel!
