Happy Birthday, Jesse

Jesse and his mom, 1989

Today marks the 25th anniversary of the birth of my grandson, Jesse Ragsdale. I am very proud of this young man. He's smart and funny and kindhearted, and he loves cats. And he's very practical: when his mom suggested a few weeks ago that he get me flowers for my birthday, he got me a car battery instead, something I needed that Taco won't eat.

Jesse and his mom, circa 2000

Going on two years ago now, Jesse decided he wanted to live with me. I agreed, although I wasn't at all sure it was a good idea. I had become used to living alone in the almost three years since Vann had died, and I sort of liked it. But now I admit that Jesse has been an excellent housemate, and I have enjoyed having him here. I don't even like to think of the time when he will decide to move out on his own

Jesse and his mom, circa now

Jesse works for a steel mill, operating something called a P2--or is it an O2, or PO2? I have no idea what that is, or even what you call it, obviously. He went to work for the company back in November as a mill assistant and, just a couple of weeks ago, received a promotion to this P2 operator position, plus a raise.

Jesse's hobbies are computer games and his dune buggy. This weekend, he placed first in an area dune buggy competition and received $100 prize money.Today, his birthday, he will spend most of the day asleep, getting ready to work a 10-hour night shift tonight. But before he goes, I'll feed him a nice birthday dinner and give him his gift. Andy, Jesse's mom, came yesterday afternoon, bearing a delicious birthday cake and gifts for her boy--since she will be getting off work today just as Jesse is going in.

We are extremely proud of our boy-- well, man now. It's hard to think of him as a man. Somehow in my mind, he got stuck in time around the day that circa 2000 picture was taken. And that's probably how I'll always think of him.

Happy Birthday, Jesse

Happy Birthday, Jesse!! He looks like a kind, good humored young man with a wonderful life ahead of him!

I hear you on finding it difficult to think of little boys of yesteryear being grown men now. Our two sons will be 30 and 34 this year and I still think of them as kids.

For the last year, DS2 has lived with his grandmother (AMIL) and that has worked out well for both of them.

Hugs!

A Quilter's Tragedy

Today I want to write about Nichole Webb Rivera. Many of you probably know this award-winning quilter and textile artist. Nichole lives and works in Houston, Texas with her husband and the youngest of her five children. On Saturday, a massive mudslide took the lives of Nichole's oldest daughter, Delaney, Delaney's fiancé Alan, Nichole's parents Thomas and Marcy Satterlee, and dozens of others in Nichole's hometown of Darrington, Washinton.

Alan and Delaney (Nichole says they were "crazy in love.")

Thom and Marcy, Nichole's parents

The term "mudslide" doesn't adequately describe the horror that was visited on this close-knit community. In truth, a small mountain fell down on them--raced down on unsuspecting folks. No warning, not time to move out of its way.

The mountain that fell

Nichole was teaching a quilting class when he learned of the disaster. She began trying to contact her daughter and parents. Delaney and Alan were visiting with the Satterlee's, Delaney's grandparents, when the mudslide hit. Not able to reach her loved ones, Nichole suspected the worst and immediately got on a plane to Washington. Faced with the full, horrifying scope of the event, she knew in her heart that her loved ones were gone.

Friends of Nichole set up a fund to help Nichole and her family. At Nichole's request, the scope of the fund has been expanded to help all the victims and families of the disasters, and there are many. Currently, 24 people are confirmed dead with some 170 more unaccounted for. Nichole's family members are not among those confirmed.

I feel very blessed to be a member of a community of quilters who rally around one of our own in times of crisis. In my own life, I have experienced this closeness and caring when my husband Vann became ill and passed away in 2009. We both received cards, notes, email messages, and small gifts from quilters all over the world, most of whom I had never met face to face.

If you would like to help Nichole and the other victims of the Washtington State tragedy, please go to this site and make a donation: http://www.gofundme.com/7r70jw. Large or small, it doesn't matter. And even more important, please keep them all in your prayers.

What a horrible tragedy for so many innocent people. So many questions about so many things. So few answers. Our hearts and prayers to all that have been affected by this nightmare. Peace for the survivors and safety for the rescuers. So very sad.

Tragic, indeed, and my heart goes out to all. I've been praying for those missing as I join in the hope they'll be found safe by some miracle, for their families, and for the resuerers. It is hard to see faces of the lost and to feel the hurt of their loved ones. What a heartbreak. Prayers continue.

Susan,
Glad you posted this. I first learned of this quilter on FB, Judy Laqudara's post, and found the website gathering funds and gave a mall donation. This tragedy s so sad and I even hope to help make a quilt for one of the survivor's or one who helped with the search and rescue. Prayers to all the folks who lost friends or loved ones.

Dropping Like Flies

Sophie has an appointment for a grooming tomorrow. I wonder if I ask real nicely if Sharon will cut my hair as well.

I have recently discovered one of the disadvantages of getting older that I had not considered. My service and health-care people are retiring or moving--and in some cases, dying.

I have lost two trusted insurance agents in recent months: my homeowners insurance agent retired, and my car insurance agent died. My primary care doctor, as I have discussed previously, moved away (25 miles away), but so far I'm sticking with him and enduring the long drives when I need his services.

As you know, Sophie groomer, whom we all adored, who came to us in her tricked-out grooming van, passed away. I think, after a couple of years of trying out groomers, we have found a satisfactory replacement. Sharon grooms from her home. It's not like having her come to us, and she's quite a different personality type from our precious Diana. But she's a good groomer who loves doggies.

And after five decades of having my hair cut, off and on, by the same person, that person has retired. My dear friend and hairstylist Gwen has gone the way of my long-time gynecologist. She has hung up her sheers, just as Dr. McCaleb hung up her speculum a couple years back.

I have been talking to folks and have come up with suggestions galore, but I have not yet settled on anyone. I'm going to have to settle soon. I look like a shaggy dog.

Next, I'm sure, will be my dentist, Dr. Stone, to whom I've been going for dental service since the mid-70s. Dr. S. is only a few years younger than I am, so I'm sure he'll be calling it quits before long. He is the person who cured my intense and horrible dentist phobia, and I'm not sure that cure will transfer to another dentist, so I really really really don't want him to quit.

Gotta go. I think I heard my two mutts fussing at the back door to get in.

It is a bummer and bother when those service providers leave our lives or our neck of the woods and we have to struggle on without them. Hope you find wonderful, competent replacements thru word-of-mouth recommendations of friends.

I remember my mother's dismay when her trusted doctors retired but she told me that's part of getting older. Phooey!

Another thing I'd like to see change is for products we each like to continue to be sold rather than be replaced or phased out. That, too, is a BOTHER!

Hugs!

Hate it when 'my people' retire... lost my dentist and gyno and general practitioner.. it is such a betrayal!!!! the hairdresser went to another job as could not support herself.... I do NOT like changes like that.. it was frustrating and damned inconsiderate of them!!! I think, right now, I am in 'good' shape and hope no changes in the future.... they will last longer than I do :)

Thisses and Thats

Bowls1

I don't think I ever showed you the beautiful bowls that Andy gave me last Christmas. I have them on my coffee table, along with the ceramic bird balls that I bought at a yard sale.

Bowls2

***

Littlecups
I know I have shown my little cup collection in the past, but here they are again. My original plan when I started collected them was to hang them by ribbons from the dining room chandelier. So far, I've never got around to doing that. Maybe someday.

***

Sophie&Taci
I just love this photo of Sophie with her leg draped over Taco. This black dog has come a long way in her relationship with kitties. And I give Taco most of the credit. Of course, had it not been for me and Jesse protecting the two kitties in the early days, they would have been dog food early on.

***
I just really don't have a lot to say today--thus the thisses and thats. I hope everyone is having a great early spring weekend.

Sweet picture of Sophie and Taco! Who would have thought they would have become such trusting friends?

Three Rows Done

 Three rows

On Wednesday, while Anna cleaned house for me, I completed the first three rows of my snowball quilt. I wasn't very excited about this quilt for a long time, but now I'm thinking it's going to be a great accent piece for my living room.

And also I'm thinking of getting a new sofa for the living room. The one I bought right after Vann passed away is not working. It's cute, but uncomfortable. Everyone except me avoids sitting on it.

Has it taken me four years to realize that? Not really, but I'm finally ready to give in to the fact. I went for relatively cheap so that if the dogs got it dirty, I would be able to change it out in a few years. They haven't really got it dirty. So I think I'm going to offer it on Craig's List and look for me a nice comfy sectional. I should be able to get close to what I paid for it.

I'm thinking sectional, because I tried some out in a local furniture store a couple of weeks ago--and they were sooooo comfy. Also, there's a corner in my living room that isn't being utilized to with my current furniture layout. I think a smallish sectional and the elimination of one chair and maybe one table will give me more space ("for dog toys" as my daughter Andy said).

M0FnLwl-FoCnRsgOxVcjrRw
This is close to the size and configuration I want--but not the sofa. Too light. Too boring. (This one is used on eBay, which is probably why it looks so tired

Modular-Sectional-Sofa-300x210
Nope. Don't like the color or the fabric. And it doesn't look very comfortable.

Bleeker - -1945899455_N290-110+115-b
This one has potential. Love the color, but I'm not sure it looks as comfy as I want.

TempoC824_C822-LSE+4xC824-000+C825-000-b
This one is looking very loungeable, and I like the color.

8487af1718a888c87c8eb07d94c006ff
Oh yeah! That's what I'm talking about! Except that it's probably too big, the configuration is wrong, and it needs to be a little bit darker. But oh, couldn't I curl up on this with a few dogs and cats and a good book or movie? You bet I could.

So Andy and I have made a date for Saturday, March 29, to go furniture shopping. I'm not buying any more couches online. I'm going to make sure I give the next one a text lounge before buying it. I'm going for comfort this time.

Cheers for your progress on this lovely quilt - 3 rows!!! Applause!!

Since seeing sweet, funny Mary Ellen Hopkins ages ago on Simply Quilts, I haven't sewed blocks into rows ever again. I use her method of sewing all of blocks together in pairs, then coupling all pairs to make 4 patches, then two 4 patches together, etc. This method means you have only one seam that goes the entire width OR length of the quilt and that suits me and my shoulders to a T.

What fun to shop for furniture and I applaud your decision to buy the next couch after sitting on it. I like some configuration of the couch in the last photo. The couches with squared arm rests or absent armrest would get voted off the island by me. If the couch has no skirt (middle photo) does have a great color but just imagine all the time you'd spend on your knees fishing the dog and cat toys out from under the couch because they'd be in plain sight. What is it I read about couch construction? Tied springs are good??

Remember not to get a couch with a fringe skirt because cats are addicted to playing with and damaging fringe that hangs. Do please listen to the voice of experience!

Would your current cute couch fit in another room in your home, like at the foot of your bed, in your sewing room, or in your guest room? Okay, I've seen too much HGTV in years past and I do have a friend who has a couch in her sewing room. Really. Just a few thoughts.

Sorry, this comment has turned into a book. My bad!

Hugs!

Next!

Snowball3

I have finished my Crayon Challenge quilt and will take it to Lena to be quilted tomorrow. I decided to pull out an old UFO for my next project. It's my Snowball Challenge that I started back in October of 2009. I joined a group of quilting bloggers to do this project.

Snowball2

The pattern is entitled "Leftovers Again" from the book 40 Fabulous Quick-Cut Quilts by Evelyn Sloppy. The challenge was sponsored by Allyson at Fat Cat Quilts blog and Nicole at Sister's Choice. I just don't remember who the other participants were. I know that Nicole finished her quilt. I didn't.

Snowball1

I think the reason I gave up on it is because my darks and lights didn't have as much contrast as I thought they should have. Now I've decided that doesn't matter, maybe. I'm just going to put it together and see what happens. I still love the fabrics, "Rouenneries" by French General for Moda.

It has been cloudy, rainy, and cold here for several days. But stuff is blooming everywhere, so I guess spring is here. My allergies say so anyway. The blooming trees are really beautiful, but blurry eyes and a stuffy nose are no fun at all--especially when combined with the other epizoodics that plague me.

Applause for finishing the Crayon challege quilt so it's ready to go to your favorite quilter!! Yippee!!!

Love the Snowball quilt and I applaud you again for getting to this pretty UFO. How large will it be when finished? The first quilt I loved at my first quilt show ever was a Snowball with alternate 9 Patch blocks and that was my first ever wall quilt. I was a new quilter and just had to try it. It's humble, but it was 22 years ago so that's okay.

I hope you feel better each day and that allergy medicine or something helps those annoying sniffles.

Hugs!

What a pretty quilt, I love the colors and I love French General fabrics. This is a great pattern, so versatile. This would make a great friendship signature quilt pattern wouldn't it?

It's chilly and raw feeling outside here in Southeast Pennsylvania, just yucky. Doesn't feel at all like spring yet but my daffodils are up a good 6 or 7 inches in my yard so I know it's on the way.

I've been lucky all my life and never had seasonal allergies but I know lots of people who suffer terribly with them. I hope you can take something for it that will give you some relief.

Please post a picture of the quilt when you have it all done we'd love to see it.

Wishing you many blessings,
Linda

I have Evelyn Sloppy's book but wasn't particularly excited about this pattern until I saw your version of it. The fabrics and colors are beautiful. You may think there is not enough contrast, but isn't that what they call "low volume" now? Thanks for picking up this old project and bringing me some inspiration.

I Guess I Can Use My Senior Discounts Now

On Tuesday I experienced a milestone (and quite shocking to the system) birthday. But my family made this shattering event much less painful--and much more fun--than it might have been. They threw me a birthday party, complete with a four-layer birthday cake from that great monument of sugar Edgar's Bakery, gifts, and cards. But the best part was the company.

The party was last night (actually my old friend BJ's birthday) instead of Tuesday because Jesse had to work on Tuesday night. And what's a party without Jesse Ragsdale?

I have a debilitating sugar hangover this morning. This is the reason why.

Birthday cards

More birthday cards and hooty owl earrings

Beautiful additions to my wardrobe

More great gifts

It's a bit disconcerting to be this old, but when one thinks of the alternative, well.... And anyway, as Rose Nylan once observed, the older you get, the better you get--unless you're a banana. So glad I'm not a banana.

What a Night

I spent the better part of last night searching for Skipper. No, not really. Just in the horribly long and frightful dream I had.

Vann and I had made a trip to see his parents in South Georgia, and of course we took the dogs. Well, it seemed that there was a party going on with many folks in attendance. All the children, dozens of them, we're playing in the huge yard. Vann let the dogs out to play with them and Skipper disappeared. Vann was acting all it's-not-my-problem and I was frantic. I called and called and walked and walked, most of it uphill.

Meanwhile Vann left with some friends while I continued to look for my dog. He came back much later, and when I asked where he had been, he said he had gone to Albany, Florida (is there such a place?) to check out a business opportunity and that he was moving there. Then his ex-wife showed up, plling a dolly with lots of bags and boxes on it, and I asked her to leave. I don't think she did, but I'm not sure.

Meanwhile, Skipper is still lost and Vann says he will go and see if he can find his dead body. By now, I am totally furious with Vann and terrified that I will never see Skipper again. Nobody else in that throng of people seems concerned at all that my little dog is missing.

All this time, I am wearing a nightgown and house shoes, and my feet are hurting, and I'm so tired I think I will drop. And also I am trying to get the dishes washed in my MIL's kitchen. I have brought my own kitchen sink, as something seems to be wrong with the MIL's.

Vann finally returns with Skipper safe and sound, and I go back to washing dishes. When I next check, he has let Skipper out again, and again he has disappeared. So I go back to climbing hills and searching and calling.

All during this long, long dream, I would awakened (at least I think I would) and feel for Skipper on the bed beside me and find him there. Relief would flood me, but I would go back to sleep and pick up the dream right where I left off.

Now people who study sleep and dreaming tell us these dreams might last only seconds, but for me, it seemed this dream lasted most of the night--and I'm purely drained today. I got up and made coffee, but went back to bed to read. I didn't go back to sleep though. I'm afraid that dream will come back.

Goodness me!! What a worrisome and exhausting dream so it's no wonder you're worn out today.

Love the part where you'd brought your own kitchen sink - that's the kind of thing where I always am relieved since nobody travels with their kitchen sink so it's only a dream.

Another wildly unlikely aspect of the dream is that dear Vann would never ever behave like that. Perhaps your subconscious was letting you know you're still a bit miffed that Vann left for heaven before it was your turn to go. That would be logical and quite normal.

My granny used to say you should eat something before you tell a bad or upsetting dream because it will come true if you don't eat first. That notwithstanding, this dream cannot come true for so many reasons. Perhaps it will be fodder for a book you'll write?

Hope you have a restful day to make up for your workout last night.

Big hugs!

The fatigue has lessened a bit, and I have been sewing and doing laundry. Here's just a peak at the sewing.

My contribution to the guild's 2015 donation quilt

It's cold and damp here today. Old Man Winter is holding on. I have called the fellow who does my yard work and told him it's time to get the yard cleaned up and ready for grass-growing season. I know it's just around the corner. So is Spring Forward, one of my most dreaded days of the year. My body does not do well with time change. Wish they'd stop switching back and forth.

I, on the other hand, got a crazy idea in my head about moving things around in my sewing room and that has meant making a huge, enormous mess as step 1. What have I done to myself?

We're likely to get a wintery mix late tonight and perhaps tomorrow, so I can deal with more of it then. Now, I'm just up from a two hour nap as all I did earlier today caused me to crash. Better to nap than be crabby, doncha know?!

Be good to you!

Fat Cats on a Fat Tuesday

Taco and Bella say Good Morning

It's been a rough few days. I have felt so tired and weak that even taking a shower and getting dressed feels like climbing a mountain.

But yesterday, I drug myself out of bed and went to Sally's house for the March meeting of our quilting bee. It was a potluck event, and I made cinnamon monkey bread to take. The spread was delicious, especially Mary S.'s Bananas Foster Bread Pudding.

Mary also brought our quilt of valor, which she had finished. And I brought the pillowcase that I made to go with it. There was lots of other wonderful show and tell, but I forgot to bring my camera, so I can't show any of it.

I paid for my outing when I got home. Slept all afternoon. Jesse ate dinner out, so I didn't cook. Just watched "The Following" and "Castle" and went back to bed. I didn't sleep well all night, probably because I had spent the afternoon unconscious. This morning, I'm trying to get some laundry done.

I have done a lot of work on my crayon challenge quilt and almost have the top done. I would very much like to hand quilt it--but I'm not sure that will happen.

Just when we thought spring was here (temps in the 70s), it has turned very cold again. But that's normal for March in Alabama.

Happy Fat Tuesday, everyone.

I think that's pretty much March everywhere. We're so anxious for Spring, especially when Mother Nature gives us glimpses of it ... before she reminds us that it's still Winter.

Rest up. I hope your energy level pops back up soon.

We share the same disability. It just sucks!!! hahaha
I totally understand the fatigue and pj days, and resting. When I feel ok, I try to pace myself and get as much done as I can, we are talking of maybe working a couple of hours.
Thinking of you. It is so cold here in Kansas! Have never seen this kind of a winter here.

Yep, March came in like a lion here with ice, wintery mix, and about 4" of snow yesterday, a 5*F low last night so all froze, and today some is thawing. This was after a lovely 70*F Sunday.

I'm sorry to hear you've beed feeling so tired. I have, too, so wonder if it's the weather, the barometric pressure, or if we're long distance fatigue twins. Go figure!

Applause for your progress on your crayon quilt top! Be nice to yourself and get it machine quilted by someone who will keep it a secret.

Perhaps someone in your bee will kindly send you some show and tell photos as they have in the past.

Wishing you good rest and sweet dreams each night forevermore. This is according to my personal policy of wishing BIG. Why not wish big?

Hugs!

I'm loving the quilt the cats are lying on! Is it Broken Dishes? Have you written about it in past posts? Hope you are feeling better each day.

When you have really fatigued days, does your skin hurt, too? Some of mine is from sciatica which has worsened over the years. I'm about due for an injection. Even if mine isn't fibro, it feels much like you describe. I've overdone it today. Heating pad & bed feels good. Your quilts are beautiful. I scrapbook, so I know how tiring using your arms & upper body/shoulders can be. Hope you're feeling better soon.
