Debra is hosting what sounds like a fun event during the last weekend of August--a Quilting Smackdown! I thought some of you might like to join in. I plan to. It will be a great way to de-stash and donate a quilt top to a worthy cause.
Debra borrowed this idea from Barbara at Thinking Out Loud blog. And it's there that you'll find the instructions for the top pictured here.
The Smackdown is pretty easy:
- Copy or print out instructions from Barbara's blog, or at least read over them and bookmark the page.
- Get your supplies ready --- use your stash, your scraps, don't buy anything! (If you do not have enough fabric, email Debra or me.)
- Do all your cutting beforehand.
- then on Saturday and/or Sunday (Aug 27, 28) you sew!
- Send the completed top to Debra for donation (email Debra for mailing address)
- Send 2½" folded binding to match (enough to bind your quilt)
- Send $5 for batting
Debra will machine quilt and bind all the quilt tops sent to her and donate them to local veterans and their families.
We are making the quilts to benefit the local veterans and their families in Debra's hometown in Texas. Some of these young men and women have families, so any size and color is fine. We are trying to make them in the twin size (about 65 x 85) so they are useful for the most people the longest time. But baby quilts and lap quilts are welcome too.
SUGGESTION: 24 of Barbara's blocks (4 across/6 down) will make a 60" x 90" top without borders. Or you could make a quilt with 20 blocks (4 across/5 down), adding a 5" border all around for a top that measures 70" x 85".
Please join us! Feel free to post a link to this notice and to Barbara's blog and Debra's blog on your blog. Debra would love to receive a nice big stack of tops for our veterans!
So, mark your calendars for the last weekend in August (27th, 28th) and start getting your supplies ready. Remember that you find the pattern on Barbara's blog. And Debra has invited you to email her if you don't enough fabric. And I'm extending the same offer. I have plenty of fabric and would love to share with anyone who needs some. You can email me at suscleve@aol.com.
Just to make it fun, I'll add a Mr. Linky here during the weekend so that we can all share our work with everyone else.
If you think you'll be joining us, please leave a comment here saying so. You don't have to formally join, and if you decide at the last minute, that's fine too. I'm just curious how many people might be interested. Thanks.

This sounds like such a neat project. I will think about doing it. My girls are small, so I am not sure I would have the time to get it done in the two days. It does sound like a worthy cause.

This is perfect! thanks so much for posting the info!
Anyone can join in the fun at any time & send me a quilt top. We are organizing the Smackdown to keep quilters on task (because we know how quilters can get sometimes . . . I'm just sayin'! *wink*)

Interesting idea and I will also give it a think to see how much time I have since the garden may have given up the ghost by then and the preserving may be mostly over for the season.
Love the pattern - thanks Barbara - and the offer to have the tops quilted and finished is stellar - thanks Debra!
I'm still trying to get back to UFOs!
Hugs!

Thanks for doing the math on the size with and without the borders. That's very helpful. It's been fun looking at your blog.
