Leaning Toward Autumn

I'm just going to stop making plans and just do things as they come. I got my grocery shopping done yesterday, but couldn't follow through on my sewing room plans in the afternoon. After walking the dogs (and subsequently bathing Skipper after he rolled in some substance that was so stinky it practically seared my nostrils), shopping, bringing in the groceries, and putting them away, I was done in. Seriously.

Might not get into the sewing room today either. I have half a book to finish before Friday's book club meeting. We're discussing Cleopatra: A Life by Stacy Schiff, and I do declare it's one of the most boring books I've ever picked up. Huge blocks of uninterrupted descriptive narrative. I can hardly make it through a paragraph without nodding off. Wish there was a Cliff's Notes for this one.

LittleYellowButterfly4249 The day I look forward to all summer finally arrived yesterday--that day that always comes in August when I can feel that Autumn is on the way. I think it's something about the tilt of the earth. I don't know if anyone else feels it, but I do. It's not the end of summer, by any means. But there's a difference in the air and in the light. And soon after, very soon, the little yellow butterflies arrive. Andy said she saw one yesterday, but I haven't seen any yet.

And about that WalMart greeter job. Count me out too. I guess I didn't realize they have to stand up. I think years ago, they could sit. These days, I dread taking a shower because it hurts to stand that long. I'm positive I'd never make it through an eight-hour shift standing. Guess I'll just have to go onthe dole.

I know exactly what you mean about 'the day' when you can feel Autumn arriving! It's been like that in Wyoming this week and it's wonderful!

Ah, I remember a bit of a poem my father used to recite this time of year:
"The golden rod is yellow,
The corn is turning brown,
The trees in the apple orchard
With fruit are bending down ..."

All of those things are true here so autumn is tip-toeing closer and closer! Tomorrow and for several days following our high temperatures are forecast to be in the mid-80s*F and that's going to be heavenly.

Made fig jam this morning with AMIL and in a little while we'll make another batch of Ambrosia cantaloupe jam. Wonder when I'll see the sewing room?

I'll be with you on the dole. Sigh!

Hugs!

It was pretty cool here today, but I am also waiting for Autumn. It is my favorite season.

So I'm not the only one! I believe it was on Monday that I noticed the change in the air, the change in the way things sound, the stillness of the afternoon as though the garden is holding its breath in wait for autumn. It felt like autumn was on its way, but wait --isn't it too soon yet? I'm always in a hurry to be done with summer's heat, but the autumn feel before mid-August seems a bit early. For my area. Oh, I'm not fooled. I'm sure there are many days of high temps ahead yet, maybe even some record breakers. But it is nice to be reminded that autumn is coming. Relief is on its way.

I have noticed that Autumn feeling here too. It's cooler at night and the breeze in the evening has that Autumnish nip to it at times.

I always notice it too!! I thought it was just in my head though! I am ready for it. It was well over 90% here yesterday!

How funny. I just told my husband yesterday afternoon that the light was different. Isn't that strange? I love it when it shifts. Sorry about Skipper. Boy, he keeps you busy doesn't he? But he's worth it being so cute and all. Hope you feel better today. We used to go camping every September to Myrtle Beach and we would sit and watch the "Yellow Butterfly Parade". It was an endless sea of yellow for hours and hours. Fascinating.

I'm GLAD it isn't just me! I told Ray Autumn is beginning to THINK about arriving. He looked at me as though the 100-plus degree temps had baked the remainder of my pea-sized brain. But I persisted. I hear the cicadas. A SURE sign! And, yes - it's blazingly hot, but something feels like Autumn is just WINKING at us & saying, "Don't let that old heat fool you. I'm on the way!"
