Taken from my front door (that's as far as I'm going).
It might not look like a lot of snow to some of you. And well, it's not. But that stuff on the street--it's not just snow. It's actually a thick sheet of ice. No traffic moving around here today.
The swirls in the street were caused by Nolan doing wheelies with his four-wheeler last night before everything froze up solid. Our street was a hot bed (or more accurately, a cold bed) of activity, with neighbors coming out to enjoy the snow. Flakes the size of pancakes were falling (well, I exaggerate a little, but they were huge). Finally the dogs couldn't take it anymore, so I bundled up and we went out for a short time. I learned this morning that some of the more adventurous neighbors enjoyed sled rides down the big hill on Stewart.
But we haven't lost electricity, thank goodness. Jesse came over with a supply of gasoline. He fueled up the generator, started it to make sure it was in good working order, and showed me how to start it if I needed to. Glad I didn't. Jesse and Andy decided to sit out the storm at their house. Since they're in walking distance of me, they figured they could hike it here if their power went out.
I cooked a pot of white chicken chili yesterday, and we enjoyed it muchly. Andy burnt her tongue, however. Today I'm making meatballs. I love meatballs. And I'm also going to finish up that Noah's Ark block that the doggies interrupted on Friday. Maybe finish the entire top. The forecasters aren't giving much hope for the roads to thaw for a couple of days, so we'll be indoors for the foreseeable future.

This is how Skipper shelters in place.
Gotta tell you about Saturday. Andy and I had planned to have lunch and see "True Grit" before we had to hunker down for the storm. We talked my sister Ramey into accompanying us. We had lunch at Jim 'n' Nick BBQ (instead of Fish Market) and then went to the movie. None of us expected it to be so funny. There was a fair amount of violence and blood too, so beware of that. But it's a wonderful movie. We all enjoyed it immensely and are rooting for it to garner a bunch of Oscars, especially one for Jeff Bridges as best actor. Matt Damon was good too, as was the little girl who played Maddie. In fact, all the actors were good. I only have a couple of negative criticisms where the script was cut short, probably to fit a time frame, and some of the story became ambiguous.
One more thing before I go. Sandy Gail was one of the participants in our Virtual Quilting Retreat a while back. (Remember that amazing Sunbonnet Sue quilt?) Sandy didn't join the UFO Bust because (now get this) she finishes each project before starting another. Did you ever?
Well I wanted to show you the above gorgeous quilt that she has just finished. Sandy doesn't keep a blog herself. Look at those perfectly pieced curves. Isn't this is a beauty? Sandy won't actually put the finishing touch to the quilt until tomorrow. That's when she will attach the label with the date of 1-11-11. Her hubby had that idea.
Thanks for sharing your beautiful work with us Sandy.
I hope everyone is keeping warm and safe. I know a lot of the country has snow and ice right now. So our advice to you--Sophie's, Skipper's, and mine--is to stay in, have a cup of tea, and do something you love.

Your neighborhood looks like a winter wonderland! It looks like Skipper knows how to handle cold weather!!! Yum, white chicken chili. Your house sounds like a great place to be. Thanks for your kind words about my quilt. I so enjoy your blog and I was blown away by the beautiful quilts that you have made and the ones that you plan to finish soon. Happy quilting! Sandy Gail

I am happy you and the pups are enjoying cozy time indoors. The cats and I are doing likewise in Atlanta :) I love snow days! And hopefully our power will stay on. I saw True Grit also and loved it. One of the best movies (acting, directing, etc.) that I've seen in a long time.

Snow day!! Love that term that is so rich in happy childhood memories. It's good to hear that you still have electricity as I'd wondered what storm effects you'd had. I did hear that Birmingham had lots of ice so surmised that was you, too. DS1 is in North GA and has 5" snow with ice on top. Tonight and tomorrow we'll get whatever comes.
Glad you liked the new True Grit and that you made it another girls' outing!
Love the beautiful quilt - well done, Sandy!!

We woke up to about 3 inches of the white stuff from the same system that dumped on you guys. I was hoping it would be bad enough to stay home from work, but I made it to work. My boss says if your not in a ditch then you need to be at work. (he really is a nice guy) It will clear up before you know it.

no snow or ice here, but lots of nice rain, rain, rain don't go away...please stay. Some hot chocolate or herbal tea does sound like a good idea though! Snow is so pretty but I'm happy you haven't lost your electricity! Love Skipper sheltering...looks warm and cozy! I saw the John Wayne version of True Grit...good stuff, but I like Jeff Bridges...will try to get it from Net Flix when it comes out on DVD. Sandy's quilt is beautiful perfection!

oh! The Winding Ways quilt is *awesome*! It's such a wonderful optical illusion design and I just love looking at it. Your friend picked out scrumptious colors. I love, *love, *LOVE* the border fabric! Well done! ::applause::

Alas, Austin got passed by...no snow! My second graders are so disappointed. Just plain "cold" does not make for a fun recess! Glad you stayed inside all warm and cozy.

Enjoy that winter weather, you sound like you're feeling better, I hope that's the case. Besides meatballs, winter weather calls for a special sweet treat, calories consumed during winter storms don't count! Good luck finishing those Noah's Ark Blocks!
I LOVED True Grit, why can't all movies have such wonderful dialogue, I just got lost n the words!

Wow! Two snow dumps in one year! Amazing. Your photos are great. I can't wait to see True Grit. We love the one with John Wayne, and I know I'll love this more. I really love Jeff Bridges.
That quilt is gorgeous. No, I never....finishing one project before starting another?! I could not imagine life that way!
