With all the fun and extra activity going on here at The Yellow House, I almost forgot I had told Beverly I was going to play "Pink Saturday" today. So I'm late getting my post in. That embroidered pink heart is a message of what Skipper (that's his name) has brought to my life. Well, part of it. He has also brought some extra responsibilities, but so far, nothing I can't handle.
I got a note from Blogger Fitzy this morning with some interesting information. According to Fitzy's hubby, Skipper is a Basenji, or at least a Basenji mix. Not knowing much about the breed, I immediately started researching on the internet and decided that Fitzy's hubby is correct. Not only is the Basenji barkless, some of the photos I've found look just like my boy. Just look.
On the left is Skipper; on the right is a generic Basenji.
Below are a couple more Basenjis.
The pointy face, big ears, curly tail, coloring-- everything says Basenji except Skipper's size. The Basenji is normally a little bigger. So he's either a mix or much younger than we think. Dr. R. put him at about two years.
The Basenji is a hunting dog that originated in West Africa. He doesn't bark, but he is supposed to be able to make a sort of yodeling sound. I haven't heard Skipper yodel, but my friend who rescued him did hear him make what she called a whining sound. So we know he isn't mute.
The research I did told me that the Basenji is a good climber and jumper and has no trouble getting out of chain link fencing. That could very well explain how he came to be strolling up Zeigler Road. Perhaps we have an escapee on our hands. I also learned that Basenjis like to stand on their back legs, like a meerkat. Skipper does that.
So what do you think? Do we have a Basenji here? Have any of you ever had one of these dogs? They also come in tan (red) and black and tan.
We are continuing to search for his owners, which, if we find them, will of course break my heart. But if he has a family, I certainly want to reunite him with them. Happy Pink Saturday, everyone. Be sure to visit Beverly's How Sweet the Sound blog for more Pink Saturday fun.

How interesting this information is about Skipper's heritage or possible heritage.
Can you get a photo of Skipper with something else in the photo to give us an idea of his size? Do Sophie and Skipper ever got close enough together to have Sophie be the comparison?
How go the baby quilts?! ;) wink, wink, nudge, nudge!
Happy pink Saturday to you!
Hugs!

Rest assured, Richard Matheson was just as baffled by the movie THE BOX as you were, and unfortunately he also wasn't happy with the earlier TWILIGHT ZONE adaptation of his story "Button, Button." Back in 1993, when Matheson attended the World Horror Convention in Stamford, Connecticut, I had the honor of hearing him read "'Tis the Season to Be Jelly," and it was an experience never to be forgotten. He said that was his first reading ever, which for a guy whose first story was published in 1950 still seems hard to believe. He also read a riveting chapter from I AM LEGEND (the one in which the wife comes back as a vampire), thus demonstrating his considerable range as a writer. Although THE BOX was released too late to be included in my forthcoming book RICHARD MATHESON ON SCREEN, fans like you should find much of interest therein.

Happy Pink Saturday, your heart is sweet and so is your puppy! Maybe he has found a new home, only time will tell! 6 years ago a Bichon ended up on my porch in the rain, no one ever claimed him and he has been here ever since, happy as a clam! He now resides with 2 Yorkies and they weren't sure they wanted him here but they adjusted quite well. XOXO

sweet Joy heart
adorable dog--looks like you've got the breed correct and how good of you to care for him. I hope you find the puppy's original home or I hope you get to keep him for yourself! :)
happy pink day!

He sure looks like this breed. I think he is more of a puppy than two but the vet would have a better idea. I checked all over to see if our Piper's parents were looking for him and nothing. I expected someone to claim him at the pound as well and nothing. He appears to be a pure bred Springer Spaniel. We had been to the pound and left and returned one hour later and there he was. We had to wait four days before we could adopt him. In that time he got parvo but we were able to save him. I said that our dog Matty (another springer that we got at the pound) had sent him to us from heaven. Maybe someone from heaven sent Skipper to you.

Happy Pink Saturday, Susan.
Skipper does look like he would bring joy to someone who loves him. I had never heard of that breed, but he certainly looks like it is the one.
Enjoy your new family member. How is Sophie adjusting?

I just read your doggie post: that's the same way we got our kitten,(my DH's $300.00 cat !!) people just drop animals off, that's so cruel, they don't know if anyone is going to feed the pets. He looks a lot like our jack russel/rat terrier mix but the others sounds more logical, especially since he hasn't barked.
That's a cute idea to put the valentines in the milk glass bowl - I have one and never know what to put in it -- all you bloggers are so inspirational.
Have a great day..

He looks similar to the rat terrior that we had as a child (ours lived 17 years)...but he is looking more like the basenji photos. :-)What a sweet dog.
