Thinking Ahead

A100735_sum04_blue_china_xl With my office almost finished, my thoughts are turning to which room to tackle next. At first I had thought to do my sewing room next--but that's going to be a massive undertaking, even more massive than the office was. So I've decided to go to something easier, my guest bedroom. And I think my color pallet is going to be blue and white.

Right now, the room actually has no color pallet. It's just sort of all over the place. I have a friend whose guest room is done in blue and white, and I've always loved spending the night there. It's very welcoming.

I have a collection of blue and white plates that I could hang over the bed. Those are NOT my plates in the photo, but I like the interesting way they're arranged--and my plates are very similar. I also like the way that Tina arranged her plates at Cherry Hill Cottage. If you click on the link, you'll see that Tina even gives a description of how she hung her plate collage. So I might try the collage effect, or might hang my blue plates in a more traditional arrangement. Who knows?

6a00d8341cbb0053ef00e54f8207918834-500wi I have a blue and white quilt (made by me) that's just right for the bed. And I believe my Peace On Earth crocheted piece would fit well too.

I'm sure I have other stuff to add. And if not, there's always thrift stores, yard sales, etc. It will be a fun treasure hunt for sheets, pillowcases, throw pillows, rugs and doo-dads.

Blue peace What color should the walls be? White, I think. Don't you? Maybe an eggshell or even creamier. Not snow white. Or should I be bold and paint them robin's egg blue?

And maybe I'll add some red accents. Not giving it a patriotic feel--no flags and Uncle Sams and such. Just to give the room some sparkle and punch. What do you think of red as an accent for a blue-and-white room?

Of course I could accent with yellow. I have a blue/yellow quilt. But I've done that, and I'm really interested in how red would look. Maybe in some throw pillows and a valance. Maybe a red-checked or red-striped bed skirt.

I'm getting excited now about starting on my guest room. But not today. Today I have the most boring job of the whole year to start. I have to get my records in order to take to the accountant tomorrow so she can file my tax return. I wish the government would just take what they want throughout the year (which they do anyway) and leave me alone in the spring. I hate this job. Vann used to always do it, but he would make me sit with him until it was done. I'm glad he did now. At least I know how to get started.

So I'll go and have at it. Least said, soonest done, as they say. Happy Tuesday to you all.

Hi Susan,
I think blue is lovely for a bedroom - mine is white with blue accents and it is so restful! It used to be pink and I swear I sleep better now that it's blue! (Or maybe I just get more tired these days!).
Best wishes, Helen

Re Paint Color: I don't think I meant Robin's Egg blue. That's a little bit aqua, isn't it? I think I mean a really pale powder or cornflower. Really pale. No green in it.

Love the ideas for your guest room and the quilt is WONDERFUL!!!!!!!! Well done!!!!!

I'm also doing our tiny guest room in blue and cream because I love the color combination. I have accent items in a few seasonal colors to rotate in there and the throw rug has many subtle colors. Currently, the walls are white.

We still have to do taxes and I'd almost rather take a beating. Sigh!

Hugs!

My guest bedroom is in blue and white. I painted the walls a light blue, making sure the blue matched all the blues in the quilts I use in the room. I think light blue walls would make the plates really pop out more since they probably have lots of white in them. I have red as a minor accent and it does not come across as patriotic, not that that would be wrong, just not what I wanted.

Oh, I do love the idea of a blue and white room! The quilt is absolutely breathtaking!!! I would have to add a dash of red here and there. I would just have to! Tina's dishes are very prettily arranged. I know just which ones you mean. White I would think for the walls. Can't wait to see it!

We just built a new home and I painted my bedroom walls cobalt blue and my ceiling in sky blue. Sounds awful, but I love it and so does everyone else who sees it. My headboard is white and I have a multi-blue quilt on my bed. The room is so peaceful and restful at night. I was afraid of the bold color, but now wouldn't think of doing it any other way!

I noticed a touch of red on your blue and white quilt. The prize winning ribbon says it all. Definitely go with some red accents.

Hi Susan,

My Mom-in-law has a 'blue room' as the guest bedroom in her home in NC. That is my favorite room in the whole house! Her walls are a cornflower blue with white baseboards and trim. The room is so soothing and comfortable. I like the idea of a little dash of red. Yellow is very predictable.

There is never enough blue in one's house. Accents of both yellow and red are great. It's a triadic color scheme so will work anywhere. Go for it!

Oooh, another exciting project, it sounds just wonderful. I love the quilt, there are a lot of little pieces in that one, and the crochet piece must have taken you a while as well! Cornflower blue walls with white trim would be my vote. What colour is the carpet/flooring? Red highlights also sound nice, but maybe not so much as a bed skirt, just little splashes. Can't wait to see it finished, you are a woman of action and I'm very impressed at the speed with which you got the office done, despite not feeling 100%.

I've been lurking for a long while! I run a painting and decorating company in Christchurch, New Zealand (at the bottom of the globe) and I never recommend painting the walls blue. It's insanely difficult to get a shade that doesn't make the room cold, or seem like the bottom of a swimming pool. It's better to add blue touches in my opinion!!

Love what you are doing with the house, it's amazing.

I'm catching up on my blog reading and boy, it has been busy at Blackberry Creek. You always inspire me! I love your pink room, it looks like it should be in a decorating magazine. And I love the blue and white ideas for the guest room. I'm sure it will be so cozy and peaceful. Have fun creating and happy spring!

I'm using blue accents in my newly painted brown & yellow kitchen. Oh and I have LOTS of plates. Never thought of hanging them anywhere but the kitchen though. Hmmm... If you paint the walls blue (personally I vote for cream) be sure it's a very light robin's egg cuz my guest room is laundry-soap-blue and a little over the top! Love you and reading your creative ideas, Suzibelle ;-)

It's me again, Margaret ;-) I clicked on the link to check out the plate collage - SO COOL! Also, my two cents, I think you should add a little music to Blackberry Creek!! LBJ
