A Visit With Kristin Steiner

Steiner This was absolutely the best quilters guild meeting I've attended in a long, long time. Our speaker, Kristin Steiner,(see her in photo at left) got me all inspired to come home and sew till my eyeballs popped out. Unfortunately, by the time I got home, my back, left shoulder, and left arm were killing me. So, no sewing for now. Just Motrin and heating pad for a while.

Kristin's specialties are Baltimore-Album-type applique, a la Elly Sienkiewicz,  altered fabric, and fabric books. Her work is amazingly beautiful, as you'll see in the photos below.

Kristin also conducts tours of Italy during which attendees get to create. One tour in the spring of 2011 will include a workshop for making a fabric trip journal. I'm considering going. But just considering right now.

The best thing I found about Kristin, as far as her lectures and teaching go, is her no-rules approach. "Start where you are, use what you have, do what you can," she says. Go with your heart. If you love bright colors but reproduction Civil War prints are the in thing, forget going with the crowd. Do what makes you happy.

If you have a chance to attend one of Kristin's lectures or workshops, I highly recommend her. But for now, you can see some of her lovely books and quilts in the photos below. Click to enlarge for better detail view.

I looked through her web site. Wow--what a talented lady. Wonder if she ever gets out here to the "left" coast?! Thanks for the photos.

I love applique quilts. . . can't say that I will ever do one but love them all the same!

Wow, what a trunk show! Her quilts are incredible, and the journals so personal. I would love to be able to peek inside the one called Orvieto. My husband and I loved that town so much.

What a delightful and sensible mantra for quilters!
"Start where you are.
Use what you have.
Do what you can."
Sister, this will preach!

The pictures are a feast for the eyes and the books seem to sing. Thank you for sharing this wonderful experience with us.

Hope you're feeling better today.

Hugs!

What a prolific quilter! I love the quilts but even MORE, I love her BOOKS! GORGEOUS! And I am so happy to hear someone say what she did about finding our OWN style, preference, & VOICE in creating! To ME, if we create to fit into some sort of 'what's the in-thing' mold, the creative pleasure just crumbles. Three resounding cheers to Kristin for her awesome pieces, her enthusiasm, her excellent advice, and her inspiration! Feel better, lil' Susan, so you can sew! I love you!
