Walking for Hope

Relay_for_life Yesterday evening Vann and I attended one of the many Relays for Life being held this time of year to raise money for cancer research and treatment. Our friend Rachel raised more than $2,000 and dedicated her walk to our friend Karen (Rachel's grandmother, a cancer survivor) and to Vann. It was an emotional evening for all of us. Vann and Karen did the survivor's walk together, and I stood back and watched them--and cried. When they returned, I hugged Vann and congratulated him on his first Survivor's Walk, the first of at least 50 more, I told him.

After dark all the luminaries were lit, each one in honor or in memory of someone who is fighting or has fought cancer. Many of the luminaries line the track where the walks take place. Some are used to spell out the word "HOPE" in the stands. At least two of them were dedicated to Vann by our neighbors (one from Sophie) and had his name on them.

After the lighting and beautiful dedication ceremony, everyone took to the track and I walked with Vann, holding his hand and thanking God for him for for all the special people who had come out that night, those who were personally fighting the battle and those who were touched by it through loved ones.

Although we had attended Relays in the past, none of them hit home like this one did. It was a very special reminder of just how important family and friends are, how important hope is. We find our hope in our loved ones and especially in God. He shows himself to us every day that we open our eyes and look for him. Last night, he showed himself in the faces of friends and strangers and in the glow of hundreds of paper bag luminaries filled with hope and love.

Hey lady! Thank you so much for sharing with us. I look forward to reading your life story every day. When many people gather for a cause, as you did, you can just feel the strength in the air. Also, I meant to tell you about a large tree that had to come down in my back yard. I am still in mourning for it and am letting a couple of suckers grow...just in case.

Blessings, hugs, and happy dancing that you and Vann have much to celebrate and be thankful for, as do many others who were there last night. May memories be sweet comfort for those who remember loved ones who were no longer there.

Hugs ...

I couldn't help but shed a few tears, reading this very personal tender post. How special a time this had to be for you both, and I can not even begin to imagine how it must uplift Van to know people are working to help support his battle. Thank you for sharing. I so wish there could have been a cure for my brother, but I am thankful that many are winning the battle and the research continues.
