My Senior Year at Leeds High

Me 12th Grade I saw this on somebody's Facebook and thought it would be fun.

Fill this out about your SENIOR year of high school! The longer ago it was, the more fun the answers will be!! It goes on to say I have to tag 10 people, blah blah blah. I'm not tagging anyone, but if you'd like to play along, feel free. Oh and BTW, the photo at right of me was taken during my senior year.

IN YOUR SENIOR YEAR DID YOU...

1. Did you date someone from your school?
The summer before my senior year I broke up with my boyfriend who had just graduated from Leeds High. I started dating a guy, not from school, who later became my husband. These events were two of many mistakes I made in my younger days.

2. Did you marry someone from your high school?
See above.

3. Did you car pool to school?
No. Mama took us to school. Some kids from the 'hood usually rode with us.

56pontiac860BW 4. What kind of car did you have?
I had no car. Most of my friends didn't have cars either. My mama drove a shiny two-tone Pontiac, but I can't remember the year.

5. What kind of car do you have now?
2007 Hyundai Sonata

6. It’s Friday night...where are you now?
At home with my husband. We're both probably reading.

7. It is Friday night...where were you then?
At the drive-in movie with K.

8. What kind of job did you have in high school?
No job.

9. What kind of job do you do now?
Retired. I was a quilt and craft book editor.

10. Were you a party animal?
A little, yes. Not drinking or drugs, but just having fun.

11. Were you considered a flirt?
A lot, yes.

12. Were you in band, orchestra, or choir?
Most of my friends were in the band, but Mama wouldn't let me join. She didn't like that the band had to ride the band bus to all the out-of-town games (boys and girls together).

13. Were you a nerd?
No, I don't think so.

14. Did you get suspended or expelled?
That was an era when most kids were still afraid of their parents. At least I was. I didn't do anything to get expelled or suspended for--unless smoking in the bathroom counts. Aunt Winnie almost caught me and a girlfriend one time.

15. Can you sing the fight song?
We didn't have a fight song, but we had an alma mater and I know every word. I'll sing it to you sometime.

16. Who was/were your favorite teacher(s)?
Mrs. Allen, my typing teacher; and Aunt Winnie (it's a small town high school), the librarian.

17. Where did you sit during lunch?
In the lunchroom with some of my friends, depending on whom I had lunch period with.

18. What was your school's full name?
Leeds High School

38353370 19. When did you graduate?
The year the kids in "American Graffiti" graduated

20. What was your school mascot?Greenie
His name was Greenie (our team's name was the Green Wave). I think he was an elf, or something like that. Sherry I, who was in my graduating class, created him. That's him on the right, and that's a big green wave of hair on top of his head. The school used him for a long time after that, but I think they might have dropped him now.

21. If you could go back and do it again, what would you do?
Not get married a month after graduation.

22. Did you have fun at Senior Prom?
I did. After the prom, I think I went to a spend-the-night party at Joyce's. (But I had more fun at my Jr. Prom.)

23. Do you still talk to the person you went to Senior Prom with?
Nope. He passed last year. He was my ex-husband.

24. Are you planning on going to your next reunion?
Most assuredly.

25. Do you still talk to people from school?
I stay in touch with my three best girls friends, and I often see several other classmates who still live in Leeds.

26. School Colors?
Kelly Green & White
Charles-Barkley
Paige_w_friends    27. What celebrities came from your high school?
Charles Barkley (NBA), Paige Phillips (Miss Alabama 1980 and first runner-up Miss America and cousin of mine), and three Congressional Medal of Honor recipients. (Click on pics  to enlarge.)

Ah-hemm! Let me say this about that! I was always told that Ed Goodson invented the Greenie, and the football team was called The Greenies, until your esteemed sister Joanne came along, and got them to change it to The Green Wave, like The Crimson Tide. Maybe Joanne can shed some light on whether this is accurate or not.

Also, since the word "nerd" hadn't come into being yet, you're saved!

Class of 1965

Georgia Dieckmann (Whitfield) invented the elf Greenie. As far as I can recall, the football team was just Leeds (up through 1953). They might have started calling them Greenies after I graduated, and then someone else may have changed it to the Green Wave. But when I was there, the Green Wave was the school newspaper, the team was called Leeds (and Shades Valley was the enemy), and Georgia drew the elf and called him Greenie or some such. Myself, I didn't do much of anything except a lot of stuff I wish I hadn't.

Well, whether Sherry or Georgia or Ed created Greenie, he's not much of a mascot, I think. Other schools have respectable mascots like cougars and tigers and eagles and such. We have an elf? Whoever invented him ought to be kicked. I was told it was Sherry.
As for Green Wave, it was that when I got there. Don't have a clue where that came from. But I think Notre Dame is also called The Green Wave, or maybe it's Penn State. Who knows?
P.S. to all: The above comments were posted by my two wonderful sisters.

This is how local legends start! Love it!

We were the Dukes of York, for a school 'way north of the Mason-Dixon line and a couple of years after the summer of love. My Dad had been transferred from Tennessee. Sigh!

Hi Susan, these questions are fun and I enjoyed the answers so much. You made me smile. If I decide to do this, I will let you know. Big smile here. I love your photo. You look so pretty and full of fun with your smile. Thanks for sharing a part of your life.

Hugs...Jeanne

I apologize for my post. Georgia's elf was called Leedy, I think, instead of Greenie, and she may have got the idea from Ed. And Sherry may have invented Greenie. I don't know where the elf originated.
