15 Books in 15 Minutes

3355144173_e037ec536a Anita tagged me to list 15 books that will always stick with me--but I'm supposed to do it in 15 minutes. I'll give it a try. I'll list them as they come to mind, not in any kind of best-to-worst order. Here goes.

1. Lonesome Dove by Larry McMurtry2. To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee
3. David Copperfield by Charles Dickens4. The Shining by Stephen King
5. Gone With the Wind by Margaret Mitchell
(This is harder than I thought it would be.)
6. Silk by Caitlin R. Kiernan
7. Little Women by Louisa May Alcott
8. Angela's Ashes by Frank McCourt
9. The Story of Edgar Sawtelle by David Wroblewski
10. Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte
11. 2001: A Space Odyssey by Arthur C. Clarke
12. The Mists of Avalon by Marion Zimmer Bradley
(With 6 minutes to go...)
13. Dracula by Bram Stoker
14. Lord of the Flies by William Golding
15. Christy by Catherine Marshall

(Edit: 5-31) I wish I had said Watership Down instead of Lord of the Flies--but my 15 minutes are way over.

I did it in 13 minutes. I'll probably think of titles that should have been on the list. I don't work well under pressure.

I'm tagging my sisters, Joanne and Ramey, to do this exercise on their blogs, and anybody else who'd like to try it. Just let me know if you do it so I can have a look at your list. I might find something I want to read.

Check back later this afternoon when I'll post the winner of my Cottage Charm Giveaway.

Going to the Chapel

Lori
Lori and Greg are getting married!! Lori is one of our best good friends. Sort of like a sister/daughter. She and Greg met about a year or so ago. We love Greg too. He's a really nice fellow, and we love that he loves our Loribelle. Congrats to you two sweethearts. May God bless you with a long and deliriously happy marriage.

Lydia's Quilt Linda, the lady who helps me keep The Yellow House clean, was just presented with her first grandchild, a little girl named Lydia Marie. I don't have a picture of Lydia, but the photo at right shows the quilt I made for her. The pattern is Stack and Slash. I taught this pattern at a Cuddle Quilt workshop for my quilt guild several years ago. It's lots of fun to make. (Thanks to Lisa A. for reminding me what the name of the pattern is.)

I'm still taking sign-ups for the Cottage Charm Giveaway. Go here to sign up.

That's Our Boy!

Clarke P

On our way back from the beach earlier this month, we stopped at the Eagles Scout Monument at Liberty Park. Our own son, Phillip (Clarke P.) earned his eagle badge when he was 18. Phillip had not seen the memorial, which has carved into it the name of every Eagle Scout in Alabama since way back in the early 20th century.

Phil & Vann We're proud of all our kids. Each one of them has distinguished his or her self in some way. They're all very good people.

At left is Vann and Phillip in front of the memorial.

Vann had his third CT scan today, and we were pretty happy with the results. Because of Vann's recent abdomenal pain, Dr. L. wanted to check to see if the cancer had spread. If it had, he planned to changed Vann's treatment. Well the cancer HAD NOT spread. Praise God! But since Vann's tumor markers are up, Dr. L decided that he would change the treatment to a drug called Abraxane (I think that's how you spell it). The doc told us that in trials, this drug had shown promising results with pancreatic cancer.

So we are still trusting God, knowing that he works for good in the lives of those who love him.

We can't say "thank you" too many times, or even enough, for all your prayers and good wishes. Please keep them up. We love you all.

Be sure to check this post to enter my Cottage Charm Giveaway and read about all the other Cottage Charm goodies that will be given away on May 30.

Holiday Gathering & Giveaway

Stawberry Cake Last evening, we had a very informal neighborhood cookout. Eddie and Paul cooked brisket and pork on the grill, Millie supplied slaw, Paul made beans and dirty rice, and I made a strawberry cake (photo at right). We gathered in Paul's driveway to eat, visit, and have a good time. Present were Vann and I (me?), Paul (Karen's in Italy with her daughter and granddaughter), Millie, Eddie, Brook, Hunter, Hunter's friend Trey, Alec, Nolan, Millie's mom Helen, Sophie, and Tiny. Fred and Murphy (Bassett Hound) stopped by for a chat. Below are a few photos of the event.

EXTRA*******EXTRA

I've decided to take part in the 3rd Annual Cottage Charm Giveaway, hosted by Kim at One Woman's Cottage Life.

My giveaways (shown below) consist of two vintage framed crewel pieces and a small (about 32" x 32") vintage embroidered linen table topper. The embroidered bonnet and flowers appear in each corner of the topper.I will give these away to two different people. The first name drawn will get to choose which she/he wants. Happy Decoration Day

Geranium
Did you know that Memorial Day, first called Decoration Day, was enacted by the Federal Government to honor Union Soldiers of the American Civil War? It was expanded after WWI to include American casualties of any war or military action.

The 30th day of May, 1868, is designated for the purpose of strewing with flowers, or otherwise decorating the graves of comrades who died in defense of their country during the late rebellion, and whose bodies now lie in almost every city, village and hamlet churchyard in the land. In this observance no form or ceremony is prescribed, but Posts and comrades will, in their own way arrange such fitting services and testimonials of respect as circumstances may permit.

Perfect Use for Charm Packs

Charm packs Our internet has been acting up for the past couple of days. We signed up for a higher speed DSL than we already had and this has confused our modem or something. We're having to boost service off our neighbor's wireless until the Dish Network people can figure out what's wrong.

I've been making Disappearing Nine-Patch blocks for Aunt Pitty Pat's Swap, and I'm having a ball. They're so very quick and easy. For the swap rules, you start with two 45 5" squares charm packs (or cut 90 5" squares, but that makes it harder and more time consuming). Sew the charm squares into 9-patch blocks, cut the blocks into quarters, and voila! You have 40 blocks to swap.

This is a great way to make kid's quilts and charity quilts. So fast and fun--and it gives you a good reason to buy lots of charm packs.

Dis

Kaitlin's quilt
Above are photos of two ways you can arrange the blocks to make a quilt. There are many, many possibilities. To see more Disappearing Nine-Patch quilts, go here.

One charm pack of 45 squares will make 20 blocks.

Hope your modem gets the idea and is back to work ASAP!

These are fun quilts to make. Our club did them in patriotic colors and sent the quilts for Quilts of Valor project. Your blocks look so pretty. I had not thought about using the charm packs, but you are right - what a great use for them and you end up with a beautiful quilt.

Aunt Pitty Pat's Block Swap

Patchwork+turtle+(3) This block swap sounds like so much fun and so easy that I signed up. Go to Aunt Pitty Pat's Blog and click on the swap picture (shown at right here) for rules and tutorial for block.

Can't wait to get started on this one.

Hi Susan,

I cannot get Aunt Pitty-Pat's site to completely build and then click on the disappearing 9 patch turtle to read the rules. Could it just be too busy or is there a hiccup somewhere? The 1st time I got the music but the "building" circling thingie just went on for ages. The 2nd timd, no music, but still the circling thingie went on and on. I never could click the turtle.

Any suggestions? Thanks!

Blackberry Winter Is Here

Webflora My grandmother always called this time of year Blackberry Winter--the chilly snap that comes sometime in May while the blackberry bushes are blooming. She further said that if there's no Blackberry Winter, the blackberry crop will be slim to none.

We should have a good blackberry crop this year because we're having an awesome blackberry winter. For the past several days we've had cool, sunny days and chilly nights. Just right for propagating lots of juices blackberries. Ummmmm. I can already taste the blackberry cobbler.

Now I want to tell you what a good man my husband is. It's true that he's feeling much better today. His first words upon awaking were, "Boy! Do I feel better this morning."

Well, at this very minute he's on the next street over cutting grass for a neighbor who is with his son in Nashville. This son has been suffering with an inflammation of the spine (it has a name, but I forget it) for about eight months. I'm so proud of Vann. Nobody would blame him a bit right now if he didn't even cut his own grass. But he does, and still has time to help others. He deserves our prayers, friends. Thank you all so much for providing them.

Bone And finally I have to show you this. The little doggie toy was given to Sophie by her groomer, Diane. It's one of Sophie's favorites. As you can see, she has loved it half to death.

The chewy stick came from a pack that I bought Soph yesterday. I gave her one as soon as I got home.

This morning when we came into the living room, this is what we saw. Now I don't know if Sophie was in a generous mood (not typical for her) and placed her toy on the chewy stick--or if the little toy fellow has a life of his own and decided to cop a chew while nobody was looking. But isn't it sweet?

I am feeling better today as well. Vann says all that was wrong with me yesterday was that I was stoned on the novacaine. I think he's right. He took me to Cracker Barrel last evening for dinner so I wouldn't have to cook. (I told you he was a good man.)

Thanks to all for your comments, prayers, and good wishes. Sometimes I don't get around to answering each comment personally. But know that we read them all and thank God for every one of you.

Hi Susan!

So glad Vann and you are both feeling good today and that the weather is cool and delightful, too.

Our blackberries are blooming, too, and we hope to get the berries before the deer eat them all. Blackberry cobbler. Yum!

What a sweet photo of Sophie's friend with Sophie's treat! Wonder if toys still play at nighttime as I was sure they did when I was a child. Looks like proof positive to me!

Hugs!

Bump in the Road

P & C This is our son Phillip and DIL Carrie at the beach last week. They have nothing to do with this post. I just wanted to feature them.

This post is really about our dr. visit yesterday. Vann was scheduled for chemo, but Dr. L. decided to send him home until next week. Vann has been having some abdominal pain and some weakness and fatigue. So the doctor wants to do another CT scan to see if that could mean that the present treatments' effectiveness on the cancer is waning. Vann will have the scan next Tuesday, then Dr. L will compare what he sees with the last scan and with Vann's blood markers and decide what action to take from there. It's possilbe that he will change the type of treatments Vann is receiving.

But no need to speculate until we know for sure. Vann's feeling a wee bit better today, I think. Anyway, he's out cutting the grass, and he walked Sophie all the way around the block (up a steep hill) this morning. Please pray that all goes well.

I broke a fillling the week before we went to the beach and had to go have it replaced this morning. So the right side of my face is numb and I'm weak and shakey. Novacaine makes me weak and shakey. That could mean I'm allergic to it, I suppose. But darned if I'm going to have dental work done without it.

So now I'm going to lay back here on the sofa and read for a while--and try not to chew my tongue and cheek.

Hope Vann bounces back off the bump! He looks so good and I'm looking for him to continue to total recovery.

I'm allergic to epinephrine and it nearly kills me, just like the preservative in wine, if not worse. Tell your dentist, who will remain nameless, to use one without epinephrine, and it's like a miracle. No pain and no shakey suffocation etc.

Trois

Hummm ... here I am a day late again. What's up with that?

I second the thought to tell your dentist to use a different agent for local anesthesia. There are several choices and another one may work well for you and not leave you feeling miserable.

Vann's medical team are certainly doing a good job at looking out for his well-being. Applause! Am glad to hear they'll check his insides, compare, consider, and recommend what treatment plan is best. You can rest easy as you wait. You're in good hands at that office and in the most Trustworthy Hands of all.

Hope today is as beautiful and cool there as it is here!

Overwhelmed by the Small Stuff

ExhaustedAlthough not Tour-of-Homes quality, my house is relatively clean and neat. Then why do I feel like it's a candidate for Niecy Nash and her "Clean House" crew? There are a few dirty dishes in the sink and some dirty laundry that hasn't made it to the washing machine. But I feel like everything in the house is covered with a thick layer of grime. Nobody's hungry, but I feel like I should be cooking something. This is all in my mind; all my body wants to do is lie down.

Thoughts of the smallest task feel like someone has told me I have to drive a herd of cats up Mt. Everest. My limbs feel like they've been super glued in place, unmovable; and my body feels like a sack of cement. Is there a name for this? I'm giving it one. I'm calling it the Woe Is Me Syndrome. And like the other syndromes that annoy me, I suppose there's no cure for this one either. So I'm just going to lie down and try not to think.

Hope your nap gave you an energy boost, enough at least to start the washer for that last load so you can feel accomplishful (I made that word up) while you snooze again or sit and read.

Hugs!

I think it is post-vacation crash you are experiencing. Vacations that are relaxing gives our bodies and souls a chance to gear down and just about the time we get in that state of relaxation, its time to face our real world again and it is bit overwhelming when we "have to do" things, but our minds and body are still in the "you don't have to do anything" mode. At least that is the way it is with me.

Portrait of a Happy Dog and Her Pop Pop

Soph & Vann I couldn't get a perfect shot of them. They were both moving around too much. But I think this picture is worth way more than a thousand words. That dog is glad we're home. She and Vann have already been for a ride on the 4-wheeler.

I have everything unpacked except the clothes and books. I think that can wait till tomorrow. Tonight, we're going to sit in the living room together, watch some tv, and get to know our doggie again.

Vacations are fun, and this one was great. But there's no place like home. (I think some little girl from Kansas said that first, but it's still true.

Last Day

Ben and Susan left to go home this morning. Phillip and Carrie are up the beach kayaking. This is our last full day here. We leave tomorrow. Vann and I will be glad to see Sophie. We've had a very relaxing surfside vacation, and look forward to coming back next spring.

On Saturday, I think it was, we made our annual excursion to Quilting By the Bay. This little shop is packed full of quilting goodies. I bought a Patisserie jelly roll and a few fat quarters. Didn't really go off the deep end spending this time. Below are a few photos from the shop:

Beachy-gan Finally Finished

Afghan I finished up the crocheted afghan that I started for our friend Stuart more than a year ago. Stuart owns the condo and treats us to a beach visit every year. I'm so glad to have this finished to show him how much we appreciate him. I'm going to leave it draped over the back of the sofa so he'll see it right away when he comes in Thursday afternoon.

I love crocheting ripple afghans, but this might be my last one. It makes my fingers numb and my arm hurt now. As has been said frequently, getting old ain't for sissies. Heck, getting old isn't even for old people, if you ask me.

Ben (Vann's baby brother) and his GF Susan arrived yesterday. And we're expecting our son Phillip and his wife Carrie today (they're on their way as we speak--er uh, type).

I'm sad because the rest of our kids can't be here (including Sophie), but on second thought, there wouldn't be room for everyone in this condo. Everyone would have to sit still. Next year, we're bringing Amy and Andy since they didn't get to come this year--and maybe Cait and Kathryn if they can make it down from RI, and Sophie, of course, oh and Jesse.

I gotta go. Everyone is yelling at me to let's go buy flip flops. Wish they had waited till I was finished here to get flipflopitis.

Life's a Beach (I Wish)

Panama-city-beach-florida-parasailWe arrived at the condo on Panama City Beach yesterday afternoon. After putting away groceries, unpacking, making the bed with the brand new sheets that Stuart sent with us, making dinner (sloppy joes), eating, and cleaning the kitchen, we were both ready to try out those sheets. I slept like a rock. This morning, we're just sort of chilling out and watching the waves and seagulls. Not very many people on the beach, but that could change as the weekend draws nearer.

Does anybody out there have one of these (see photo at bottom), a
Earths-biggest-selection-450px._V251249388_ Kindle or other kind of e-reader? I think I want one, but I can't make up my mind. They're the size of a book, but they'll hold 1,500 books. You download the books from the internet. The cost of a new release, bestseller is about $10. The screen is lighted, so you don't need to worry about good reading light. You can even subscribe to newspapers and magazines via the Kindle. And the Kindle has a voice mode, so you can sew or cook or whatever you like to do and have your books read to you.

I'm seriously considering one, so if anyone has any experience with them, I could use some advice.

My dad got a Kindle for Christmas. I didn't think I would like it at all.
When I got a few minutes to mess around with it though I loved it. It sin't lit like a computer screen so it doesn't hurt your eyes, in fact it looks like you are reading a regular page in a book.
Except you get to choose what size the print is.
I didn't get a chance to play around with it all that much, but what I did get to play with I loved. My mom is wanting one now. She had thought it was pointless because she likes to buy the actual books. After messing with Dad's she wants one.
There are even some cookbooks and knitting pattern books that you can download for it.

My sister has had a Kindle for quite awhile and swears by it! She's also impressed with the newer version and recommends it to everyone! I can do it for hours and just come away so relaxed. I have been looking at the Kindle and debating about getting one. Looks like you will be our trailblazer and let us know what you think.

My sister Trish got a Kindle for her birthday back in February and no one has seen her since. Seriously, she LOVES it. The books she can buy for it through Amazon cost about half of what she would regularly pay. She carries is absolutely everywhere with her. Your only danger in getting on is that you might just disappear like she did.

I want to be looking out that window! I work with someone who has an e-reader. He loves it! I think there would me something missing - not holding a book and turning the pages. But I think for traveling it would be wonderful. Hope you are enjoying yourself.
