Here it is--the vegetable that made Fannie Flagg famous: the fried green tomato. My sister Ramey and I had lunch today at the Irondale Cafe, the offspring off the Whistlestop Cafe, the setting of much of Fannie's book and movie. Her family is from Irondale (about 10 miles from where I live in Leeds) The cafe is a couple streets north of the Irondale Library, where my sister works. It is said that this is the very place where Idgie Threadgoode barbecued Ruth Jamison's no 'count husband and served him up to the sheriff. We didn't have barbecue today--just veggies. But, as you can see, they contained enough grease to float a corpse. I can feel my arteries hardening now.

My goodness, that doesn't look appetizing at all (sorry). Better slather some butter--make that bacon fat--on those beans and cornbread!

Very interesting looking meal. The green tomatoes are fried in a batter? What vegetable is in bowl? Are they broad beans? Better have a big bowl of Oatmeal tomorrow morning -- that should help counter some that grease :))

Never had fried green tomatoes, but have often wished I had! It seems so Southern!

You are making me salivate! I can't wait for the tomatoes to come on so I can sneek some green ones to fry. My husband hates them and thinks they are a waste of a tomato, he wants me to leave them to ripen, silly man.
