Girlfriend Quilt a Hit

0-4

Alicia's quilt was well received. Jesse said she loves it and will pass it down to her daughter some day.

0-5I didn't do an awful lot of styling for these photos, I'm afraid. Jesse was in a hurry, so I had to be in a hurry too. But at least I documented it.

What a happy and delightful quilt the Girlfriend Quilt is and it's no wonder Alicia loves it! The colors, the blocks, the layout, and the binding are all just perfect. Applause, applause, and well done, Susan!!

Hugs!

Nicely done! No surprise there! Even though you stretched your comfort zone, if she likes it it was a win!

The Rest of the Books for 2024

Typepad has stopped letting me use the Typelist function to list books at all now. Either that, or they've developed some secret process that they aren't telling me about. Or maybe I'm doing something wrong. If so, I have no idea what.

So I'm going to list the rest of the books I've read this year here. And in 2025, I'll give a list about once a month or so of what I've reads, as a post. I'm tired of trying to figure out what Typepad has done.

81zoFp4tDJL._AC_UY436_QL65_Currently I am reading The Reformatory by Tananarive Due. I was hooked from the first chapter. Set in Jim Crow Florida, the story follows Robert Stephens Jr. (Robbie) as he’s sent to a segregated reform school that is a chamber of terrors where he sees the horrors of racism and injustice, for the living and the dead. It's extremely well written but sometimes hard to read if you hate cruelty and injustice. *****

81orj9uwK3L._AC_UY436_QL65_Bad Liar by Tami Hoag is set in the Cajun bayou country of Louisiana. Two people are missing: a hometown hero gone hunting and a drug addict whose mother swears was turning his life around. A mutilated body lies in the local morgue that can't be identified as its face has been obliterated by a shotgun blast. Does the body belong to either of the missing men? Or is either of them the killer? And who is the worst liar in a story of intrigue that two very different sheriff’s detectives will struggle to unravel?" ****

{7C321DD0-4D2E-41DC-AB65-DFF571CB05E6}IMG150The Life Impossible by Matt Haig is in many ways a delightful and intriguing book. Retired math teacher Grace Winters, whose husband has left her alone, inherits a run-down house on a Mediterranean island by a long-lost friend. Among the rugged hills and golden beaches of the island, Grace searches for answers about her friend’s life, and how it ended. What she uncovers is stranger than she could have dreamed. Filled with wonder and wild adventure, this is a story of hope and the life-changing power of a new beginning. I was enthralled by this story but irritated with all the bothersome descriptive narration. ***

199798953One Perfect Couple by Ruth Ware is the story of five couples on a deserted island competing in a reality TV show for a cash prize. Things take a dark turn when they realize the game is rigged and one of them is a killer. A furious hurricane leaves them stranded, running out of food and water. As the contestants turn up dead, one by one, everyone is afraid and everyone is under suspicion. This book, Io me, was just ok. ***

{2E1380D9-AF04-4382-A851-0C4654764A6E}IMG400The enslaved man in James by Percival Everett is the same Jim we met in Mark Twain's beloved book Huckleberry Finn. When Jim overhears that he is about to be sold to a man in New Orleans, separated from his wife and daughter forever, he decides to hide on nearby Jackson Island until he can formulate a plan. Meanwhile, Huck Finn has faked his own death to escape his violent father, recently returned to town. Thus begins the dangerous journey by raft down the Mississippi River toward the elusive and too-often-unreliable promise of the Free States and beyond. This is a wonderful book. You should read it. *****

51CRfAI89LLThe Poet of Tolstoy Park by Sonny Brewer is based on the true story of Henry Stuart’s life. Henry's doctor has given him the shocking news that he will not live another year. It’s 1925. The place: Canyon County, Idaho. Henry is sixty-seven, a retired professor and a widower who has been told a warmer climate would make the end more tolerable. San Diego would be a good choice. Instead, Henry chooses Fairhope, Alabama, a town with utopian ideals and a haven for strong-minded individualists. Upton Sinclair, Sherwood Anderson, and Clarence Darrow were among its inhabitants. Henry bought his own ten acres of piney woods outside Fairhope. Before dying, underscored by the writings of his beloved Tolstoy, Henry could begin to “perfect the soul awarded him” and rest in the faith that he, and all people, would succeed, “even if it took eons.” It's a good book, if you like such books. ****

81nJmTjq63L._SL1500_In Memorials by Richard Chizmar, it's 1983. Three students from a small college embark on a week-long road trip to film a documentary on roadside memorials for their American Studies class. The project starts out as a fun adventure. But as they venture deeper into the Appalachian backwoods many of the memorials they find feature a strange, unsettling symbol. They suspect someone is following them. Their vehicle is tampered with. The students can’t help but wonder if these roadside deaths were really random accidents…or is something terrifying at work here? Good, scary book.****

***
If I'm counting correctly that makes 55 books I've read this year. With my trouble with Typepad, I might have left out a couple. But this is what I've come up with.

I hope everyone is enjoying a great Christmas/Hanukkah season and is looking forward to a happy new year.

Ah, you like much more creepy than I do, but have read a couple of Matt Haig's books and loved them so will look for this one. Thank you!
One thing good about chronic fatigue is that sitting gives you more time to read! Too bad it fails to help you feel rested.
Hope Typepad starts being user-friendly.

Happy Boxing Day

6a00d8341cbb0053ef026bdead271a200c-500wi

I hope everyone had a great Christmas Day. It was good here, just me, Jesse, and Andy. We cooked and ate and then ate some more. Then Andy and I watched a few more episodes of "From" on Prime. It's a great series, and we're almost finished. Ozzy came too, and he was a very good dog. He and Taco seem to be working out their problems, but Bella still stays hidden when he comes.

Today is Boxing Day, once known as a day to give to the needy. I wish we could turn it back to that, nationwide.

The Girlfriend Quilt got finished and given to the girlfriend. I have photos of it, which I will share later.

Enjoy the remainder of the holidays, folks. You know, this is only the second day of Christmas. We still have ten more to go, and New Years too.

So happy to hear you, Andy, and Jesse plus dogs had a wonderful Christmas together! We were 5 around our table since DS1 and DIL have moved here and much laughter and good food was had by all. Joy! Speaking of Z&L, they're unpacking boxes at their new home and still haven't found the knives, forks, and spoons. Good they're adept with chop sticks!

I look forward seeing the Girlfriend Quilt's pictures and story.

Where do you get a Partridge in a Pear Tree these days?

Hugs!

Current Angels

Myangeljpg - 1

Ramey's angel

In 1980, I bought two angel kits from Current. I made one tree top angel for me and one for my sister. Some years later, one of her cats peed on Ramey's angel and she had to discard her. Then more years later, I found one of the kits on Ebay, bought it, and made Ramey another angel.
The first photo top) is my 44-year-old angel from 1980. The other photo is my sister's newer angel from a few years ago.
Now I go to finish binding the Girlfriend Quilt.

Beautiful angels and I love how individual and different they look from each other!!

DH and I both came from families with a star as the Christmas tree topper, so we have always had a star. DS1 and DIL have a lovely star on the top of their tree, too.

Six days to finish the binding - you can do it!

Hugs!

Book Club and Stuff

Sister Ramey, my book club's resident leader and guru (we just call her the book nazi) has been down with COVID. She's all better now, but she had still not got all her oomph back on the date of our meeting last Tuesday, she turned the proceedings over to me and dour friend Joan. I made a big pot (much too big) of vegetable beef barley soup and a pan of bacon cheese cornbread. For desert I made pecan brownies and served them with vanilla ice cream. Joan made something she calls her Christmas salad, which I believe was the most delicious salad I had ever had.

It was very hard getting all the stuff cooked and carried to the church. I had help from Jesse getting it into the car, but as I have always had trouble asking for help, I carried most of it in myself. And I think that pot of soup weighed about 57 1/2 pounds, at least.

I must have looked pretty tuckered when I got it in because Joan took over, made me sit down, and did all the serving and cleaning up afterwards. Then some of the others help me load up the car. At home, Jesse unloaded it while I got into my pajamas and got into bed. Not sure I have even yet recovered.

The book discussion (Just the Nicest Couple by Mary Kubica) was lively and interesting. Not everyone liked the book (I did), but everyone had lots to say.

I haven't done a lot of decorating this year, compared with other years. Daughter Andy came over yesterday and put up my little (about 4 feet) tree. We looped some bead garland on it, put my angel that I made in the 70s on top and called it good. Then today I added my collection of cardinal ornaments, many of which were given to me by some of you blog readers the year Vann passed away.

Jesse replaced my sunflower quilt hanging in the foyer with my Christmas tree quilt.

I have the fireplace screen adorned with a string of colored lights, a couple of knitted Santas, and a couple of knitted stockings, and that's about it. Some other things might pop up before Christmas comes. But we're certainly not decorated to the max as in other years.

Maybe I'll get some photos later. But I'm in the midst of laundry right now.

Oh, honey!
As my Grandma Hall used to say, "Get over yourself and ask for help! It is a gift to others to be allowed to be helpful." Instead you hurt yourself and that's no good and no fun.

Your soup looks delicious and I again wish I could have beef. Damn Lone Star tick!

We're having a less is more Christmas, too, but our reason is because last week DS1 and wife closed on a house here and in the coming week, they will return to FL to load up furniture and boxes to move here!!!!!!!!!!! They plan to turn in the rental truck on the 23rd and fall apart.

As long as your decorations make you smile, they are enough. Be sure to have Christmas CDs playing softly in the background for no effort holiday cheer. I recommend the gorgeous harmonies of Mannheim Steamroller's "Christmas", "Christmas is in the Aire", "Christmas Extraordinaire", "A Fresh Aire Christmas" and/or their "25th Anniversary Christmas". Joyful music, indeed.

Busy Days

GFQ - 1 (1)
I picked up the Girlfriend Quilt from Angela the Longarm Quilter on Thursday (or was it Friday?). Anyway I've begun stitching down the binding. But I had to put it aside to finish my book club gifts. I have them all done except for stitching down the binding. I would have finished last night, but my eyes don't do too well at night, and I had to give up when I could no longer see the thread. So I watched several episodes of "The Madness" on Netflix instead. If you like a good thriller, you should love this one.

I found out a few days ago that I have to be in charge of our book club meeting on Tuesday. Sister Ramey, who is usually our leader, is sick with COVID. She's much better now but doesn't think she'll be up to doing book club. That means I'm in charge of food and leading the discussion. Another member is helping with food. I'm going to make a crockpot of soup and purchase a dessert, and the other member is bring her special Christmas salad.

Oh and yesterday was Vann birthday. I hope they have four-wheelers in Heaven. If so, I'm sure he and Miss Sophie took a ride around the place to celebrate. I hope they let Skipper go with them.

V&S

Wonderful and delightful Girlfriend quilt and well done in getting on with the binding!
Applause on being almost finished with the Book Club gifts and I hear you on thread becoming difficult to see in waning light. Hope Ramey is on the mend as Covid is no fun any time, but having it so close to Christmas is just no fair! Good plans for the food.
A belated Happy Birthday to your dear Vann and wish you could step into that photo just briefly to give both Vann and Sophie hugs.

Hugs for you!

Nothing Hard Is Ever Easy

PHjpeg - 1

This is the result of several days in the sewing room trying to create gifts for my book club members. The video looked so simple to do. But nothing is ever simple in my hands. I think I have it now though. I only have five more to make, and a week to make them. Wish me luck. (Note: I can post this here because I'm pretty sure none of the book club members read my blog--or even know I have one.)

How pretty and so wonderfully festive!! I hear you on finding it harder to make than the video hinted it would be and imagine it takes immense concentration. Wishing you well at finishing the other 5 and know your friends will love receiving them. You'll be an expert by the time you've made all of these, so maybe the rest of your family and friends will receive one, too! Or not!!

Hugs!
