News Updates

Unknown

Billy the goat who roamed Mountain Brook, a Birmingham suburb, for about a week is home with his new owner and his six new wives. Yeah, six wives. I guess we know now why he kept running.

The Birmingham woman who was missing and assumed abducted for four days has fessed up. There never was a toddler on the interstate, and she never was abducted. She has lost her job and her boyfriend--and perhaps her mind. Who knows? She has not, as far as the general public knows, offered any explanation as to why she did such a thing.

As for the baby in the kudzu, we have to assume the child is well and happy. We've heard no more.

In more recent news, we now have a groundhog roaming Leeds. He was on my daughter's back porch on Monday evening when she returned from work. She thought he was a beaver.

Strange Things Are Happening

Goat2 - 1

I know, I know! I said I was going to finish the dollhouse quilt next--and I haven't. But I did make a goat block for the Fab Farm quilt (that's not what I''m going to call it).

I wanted to make the block in honor of one of the interesting things that happened (is happening) around here this week. As Red Buttons used to say a long long time ago on his tv show (while skipping around on stage and holding his hand to his ear) "Strange things are happening." (I never did understand all that.)

Anyway, here's a rundown of the strange things our area has experienced this week.

Baby in the Kudzu: Everyone was very troubled when a carjacking was reported in Birmingham. The most disturbing thing was that the car had an infant in the back seat. It was reported the next day that the car had slipped out of gear and rolled into a patch of kudzu across the street. The baby was ok. Nobody ever said why a baby was left alone in an automobile.

Toddler on the Interstate: Shortly thereafter, the airways were full of frantic reports of a young woman being abducted on I459. She was coming home from work, the tale went, and saw a "male toddler" walking down the interstate. She called 911 and a relative and told them she was stopping to check on the child. When the police arrived, the woman had disappeared, but her car was on the side of the interstate with the motor still running. Her purse, wig, and cellphone were also found. We all worried and prayed and listened for news. The news came in slowly, and some of us got suspicious, especially after we saw the video of her pulling over on the highway. Then when the she came walking up to her parents' house and knocked on the door (apparently unharmed), we got more suspicious. The full story of why the young woman perpetrated the hoax, or even if it actually was a hoax, has not been reported. But police statements, family statements, and the video from the interstate make it pretty clear that there was no male toddler and no abduction.

Bill Goat Gruff in Mountain Brook: The story we continue to watch is even closer to home (for folks in my area at least). A big old beautiful ram that has come to be known as Billy escaped his owner's car and has been avoiding capture in the most exclusive area of Birmingham, Mountain Brook. Actually it is the most exclusive area in the state and one of the most exclusive in the country. Well, anyway, come to find out, some residents of Mountain Brook actually own goats. One lady, who captured Billy and had him in her fenced yard for a time, has two goats who sleep in her house. Billy visited these folks and their goats, got hydrated and loved on, then jumped the fence and was off again. He has been capture three of four times over the past several days. But he always manages to escape. We're all hoping and praying that Billy is soon returned safely to his owner.

I'll report as I have more news of Billy Goat Gruff.

Love your fabric goat and hope Billy gets home soon. He's a houdini of a goat!
The other things are strange, indeed, am so glad the baby was found unharmed. What was the person who reported the toddler thinking??
We got nearly an inch of rain last might. Glub, blub!

Hugs!

Horsey

Horse

My sky fabric arrived for the dollhouse quilt, and I was ready to get back to work on it. Then I saw a sweet little quiltlet that a Facebook friend had made and I got an itch to make one too. It's called Fab Farm by Elizabeth Hartman. The pattern has two versions: a large quilt and a small wallhanging. I'm making the small one.

I went ahead and stitched up the horse block (photo above) today while my cleaning lady was cleaning the house. I'll put it away now until I finish the dollhouse.

I was a little disappointed with the instructions, which hop around throughout the document. For instance, fabric requirements for an animal is near the beginning. Then you have to skip over several pages for cutting instructions and the beginning of sewing instructions. Then you have to skip a bunch more pages for the rest of that animal's instructions. Also some information is left off the diagrams.

But I managed to get the horse instructions figured out and finished it and the and strawberry block, which is actually part of the horse block. There is a cow, a sheep, a chicken, a pig, a bee, a goat, and a sunflower to go.

One of my favorite tv series of the 21st Century has been "Justified" starring Timothy Oliphant. When the series ended a few years ago, I was very disappointed. Well, I'm happy to say that a sequel begins tonight on FX (and streaming on Hulu) entitled "Justified: City Primeval," also starring Timothy Oliphant as U.S. Marshal Raylan Givens. The setting has changed from Harlan County, Kentucky to Detroit, and I don't think any of the original characters, except for Raylan, are returning. But maybe some new characters have been created that are just as entertaining--I hope. Can't wait till 9:00 when the series begins.

Love your wonderful horse and am sorry the instructions were so poorly organized. How annoying!

We have rain this morning which is most welcome and I hope to sew today.

We get our new oven tomorrow and we're so

Black Cat Manor

HALE1 - 1

It took a while to decide what I wanted to do with the front door. Finally the glowing cat eyes caught my attention, and I decided it was perfect (see closeup below). Now to get it quilted.

Ooh, the glowing cat eye fabric is perfect! I wish I had some of that for mine. I'm going to look if I don't find something I like in my stash. So fun!

Independence Eve

Monday Cropped - 1
I spent much of the day in the sewing room. I got my back really hurting. (Anybody know a good sewing chair for someone who has serious back issues?)

I have all the blocks made for the Halloween mystery quilt. I'm trying to decide if I really like the front door to the castle with all the creatures. I haven't fused the jacks, the ghost, and the bat on yet until I decide. I'm thinking some kind of black front door with maybe just the jack-o-lanterns on the step. I'm going to sleep on it.

We've had some really good thunder showers the past few afternoons and evenings. The high temperatures have dropped from those high 90s with heat indexes in the triple digits of last week. We're expecting highs in the 80s for the next few days. Hurray!

Wishing everyone a fun and safe 4th. And please keep the furbies inside and give them lots of cuddles if the fireworks bother them. So many dogs and cats run away and are lost during the fireworks seasons.

Love your Halloween project and I agree about too many creatures in the front door area. Seems to me that bat could fly around the towers and the ghost float from an upper window. I like your thought about a front door and steps. You do such marvelous applique!

Sorry about your back discomfort and have no suggestion about a chair. Didn't drivers and secretaries have a lumbar pillow to lean back on?

It's hot and humid here, too.

Hugs!
