Bonding

18118785_10211338415709315_5721525021068979067_n

Taco is a great bonder. Here he is bonding with Cait on the living room floor. Bella stayed in hiding for the first few days Cait and Kathryn were here. Now she comes out occasionally, but bonding is not in her bag of tricks--unless it’s bonding with Jesse or Taco.

Houstonlakesretail750xx2803-1581-0-0*750xx750-422-0-1Yesterday I did something I haven’t done in a while: I went fabric shopping in a real store (as opposed to online). My sister Ramey needed to go, so I tagged along. We spent an hour or so in Jo-Ann’s Fabrics, where I gathered up some gray fabric to add to my stash. I have very few grays, and since I’m thinking of doing my heart blocks with gray backgrounds, I thought I’d better have some on hand.

Ramey didn’t find what she needed at Jo-Ann’s, so we made a quick stop by Hobby Lobby, where she had more success. Then we dropped into Panera’s and had wonderful sandwiches and soup.

Needless to say, all the activity was not kind to my back, but I had a good time, and I’m looking forward to playing with my stack of new gray fabrics. I don’t have a photo of the fabrics yet, but I’ll take one and post it later. I got some really pretty ones.

I was so happy to find your blog today. I used to follow your blog when I had a quilting blog several years ago (Sparkle Jars). I'm quilting again. I've been trying to remember your name/name of your blog for a few months and then...yesterday...a friend serendipitously loaned me the book, Fan Quilt Favorites, and there you were at the front of the book on the author page! :) Anyway, glad to have found you so I can enjoy your blog again as well as your book list. Have a great day. Gayle

I know you probably already know of this site... but just in case you don't I'm sharing as I buy quite a lot of fabric from them. https://www.thousandsofbolts.com/
They color sort their fabrics so it is easy to buy colors (grey for instance). You can't "feel" the fabric tho. That's what makes shopping at fabric stores so much FUN!!

Great Discoveries

O
Cait and Kathryn have discovered Daylight Donuts delicious apple fritters.

I haven’t had any time for quilting this week. But I’ve been enjoying spending time with Cait and Kathryn. We haven’t done anything special. In fact, I haven’t been away from the house since they got here. But they have gone out several times, exploring around the old hometown and visiting Daylight Donuts where they’ve been introduced to those dessert-plate size, completely addicting, apple fritters.

I have made a great discovery too: I’ve found that I now have access to Shipt grocery delivery service. This will cut out one of my most difficult chores. For those of you who find grocery shopping to be difficult or impossible (or maybe just don’t like to do it), check this out.

If the link doesn’t work, here’s the URL: https://www.shipt.com/groceries/?r=C74D8C. For some reason, I’m having trouble getting my links to imbed.

I know it's been said... but I really didn't believe it... that we all have a double. Well, one of your gals (the one in braids) looks just like my oldest granddaughter who has thick brown hair and also loves to put it in braids. Maybe they're related somewhere in their ancient background. ;>) Hugs... e from sheep ranch in Petaluma CA.

Never Knew I Could Hurry So Slowly

6a00d8341cbb0053ef01b8d05e213b970c-400wiCait and Kathryn will be here this evening. I’m trying very hard to get the bedroom ready for them. You wouldn’t believe how hard it is to change bed sheets when you have no working spine.

I grocery shopped yesterday, but had to wait for Jesse to get home to bring the groceries up for me.

I planned to vacuum before C and K arrived, but it ain’t happening. They’ll just have to be grateful for food and clean sheets.

It sure will be good to see them. Haven’t seen them since August 2014.

My sister coming to visit next week. Have to pace myself getting ready. House always turned upside down anyway what with eating, reading, snacking, movie watching, laundry . Dusting seems very important until she gets here. Y'all enjoy your time together!

Have fun! The girls won't be bothered about those dust bunnies at all.

Hope the wewather is good there as our forecast is for rain, rain, and more rain for the next 3 days.

Heaven help me, I'm packing up a lot of my sewing room to prepare for a furniture rearrangement. Looks good on paper, but oh, the work involved!

Busy Week Behind, Another One Ahead

I won't even try to list it all. Suffice to say that I had several activities at my house last week, including Easter dinner with the family. It was all fun, and would have been more fun if I had not been battling increasing back pain. I have an appointment with my doctor in a couple of weeks (the soonest I could see him). I'm going to tell him that I'm either going to have to have some relief from this pain or he's going to have to write me a prescription to stay off my feet from here on out. I can't take it anymore.

I'm expecting house guests--Cait and Kathryn--my other daughter and DIL--to come in tomorrow from Providence, R.I. I haven't seen them for a while, so I'm looking forward to the visit. But, again, I'm sure I would enjoy it much more without the pain.

Anna has had numerous personal issues and hasn't been here to clean for several weeks. But she's here today. So I came up to the sewing room to get out of her way. I got the rows of heart blocks sewn together and the backing constructed for it. I also have a backing for Jesse's quilt, but no construction necessary. I purchased the 108-inch fabric so I wouldn't have to sew any great long seams for that huge quilt. I do have to press it, however, which I don't look forward to that.

Hearts2

I have decided against a border for the Rainbow Hearts quilt. It measures 50 inches by 60 inches without borders, which is plenty big for a cuddle quilt, even for a teenager, I think. I'll put a pretty binding on when it's quilted, which should finish it up just fine.

Anna is still working, so I think I'll get my binding made for the Dancing Leaves quilt. Quilt show will be here before I know it, and I still have lots to do to get my quilts ready.

Love the cuddle quilt and think a charming binding will look great!

So sorry your back has been hurting so much. Perhaps your long-arms quilter will press your quilt top and backing for you - for a fee or for free?

Enjoy your guests from the northeast! Hope they'll cook and baby you while the are there.

Pressed Between the Pages

17884136_1590145037679429_8851708253652315046_n
This is me and my sisters, long ago and far away--well, not too far away as the crow flies. Joanne is holding Baby Ramey. And that’s me standing in front of them. I’m three years old, Joanne is 12, and Ramey is newborn.

There’s a quote in a book I read a couple of weeks ago that I will paraphrase (since I don’t remember the exact wording). The character is looking at a photo of himself taken many years passed. He comments on the fact that because the cells in our body regenerate themselves every so many years, he is physically a totally different person from the one in the photo.

I am not that little girl anymore. And boy! can I feel it.

The Secret to Hummingbird Cake

  51C9oRl+YgL._SX326_BO1 204 203 200_

When Beverly posted this book on her How Sweet the Sound blog, I was attracted by the cover. I love Hummingbird Cake. I love to bake them, and I love to eat them. One Christmas season, I made more than a dozen of these amazing cakes and sold them to make money for our local food pantry. But I digress.

I decided to download a Kindle sample of the book and see if I would like it. I didn’t think I would. I normally don’t go in for chick type books, as anyone who follows my book review (left sidebar) can attest. After reading the sample, I was hooked. I had to find out more about Carrigan, Ella Rae, and Laine. So I downloaded the entire book.

I have to confess that the first third of the book is just a bit slow--or maybe I’m judging it in hindsight. The last two-thirds is extremely riveting. Perhaps that’s what makes the book’s beginning seem leisurely. And maybe the author meant it to be that way. She lulls you into the the hot and humid Louisiana world of these three women and sets you up for an emotional finish that will send you through at least a half of a box of tissues.

I can’t say a lot about the plot of the book without dropping some spoilers. Think “Steel Magnolias,” “Beaches,” or “Terms of Endearment.” Or even Little Women. Any book or movie that deals with the special bonds formed by girls and women. Add the southern heat and humidity of Louisiana and friends and family gathered in a century-old farm house, and you have the makings of this wonderful book. Read it.

Hummingbirdcakeandslice

If you’d like to try your hand at making one of these wonderful southern confections, you can find my recipe at the bottom of the right sidebar under “Recipes, Etc." There’s no secret to how I make it. I use the original Southern Living recipe, contributed by a southern lady whose name I can’t remember right now. I just tell everyone to “watch out for the beaks."

Hummingbird Cake

Hummingbirdcakeandslice

The recipe I use came from a Southern Living cookbook. This is, btw, the most requested recipe in Southern Living magazine history.

Yield: 16 servings

Ingredients

3 cups all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon salt
2 cups sugar
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
3 large eggs, beaten
1 cup vegetable oil
1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla extract
1 (8-ounce) can crushed pineapple, undrained
1 cup chopped pecans
2 cups chopped bananas
Cream Cheese Frosting
1/2 cup chopped pecans
Preparation

Combine first 5 ingredients in a large bowl; add eggs and oil, stirring until dry ingredients are moistened. (Do not beat.) Stir in vanilla, pineapple, 1 cup pecans, and bananas.

Combine first 5 ingredients in a large bowl; add eggs and oil, stirring until dry ingredients are moistened. (Do not beat.) Stir in vanilla, pineapple, 1 cup pecans, and bananas.

Pour batter into three greased and floured 9-inch round cakepans. Bake at 350° for 25 to 30 minutes or until a wooden pick inserted in center comes out clean. Cool in pans on wire racks 10 minutes; remove from pans, and cool completely on wire racks.

Spread Cream Cheese Frosting between layers and on top and sides of cake; sprinkle 1/2 cup chopped pecans on top. Store in refrigerator.

I'd Rather Eat a Bug

I decided I would stop taking my Prevacid and start chewing licorice instead. The consumption police have warned me time and again that Prevacid, as well as shrimp, pork, chicken, cola, sugar, anything processed, and any non-organic vegetable or fruit will kill me. So I thought maybe I could start knocking these banned consumptibles down, one poison at a time. I haven't had cola in quite some time, so I do have one score on my board.

I had read that licorice is a good remedy for acid reflux, which I have bigly. So I studied the sparce offering of licorices on the candy rack at the local pharmacy and picked the one in the picture--maybe because it originated in Australia, I don't know. I know absolutely nothing about the finer points of licorice, so I had to find something on which to base my choice.

Well, either I chose wrong, or I hate licorice. I had eaten licorice jelly beans, which I know are mostly sugar, and while they weren't my favorite jelly bean (that would be cinnamon), they weren't disgusting either.

I am here to tell you that the Australian licorice was, indeed, disgusting. I popped one into my mouth and began to chew. I thought I would never get it down. The thing tasted exactly like I imagine a plug of tire rubber infused with diesel fuel would taste. I don't think I've ever put anything into my mouth with such a horrible taste, with the possible exception Robitussin, which I made the mistake of trying once at the well meaning advice of Vann. On second thought, I believe the licorice was worse, much worse. N'ary another piece of licorice will ever cross my lips. I swear it. (Nor will another dose of Robitussin, but I swore that swear years ago--and have stuck to it.)

So I'm sticking with Prevacid. Several years ago when I was diagnosed with acid reflux, I had already suffered serious esophageal damage with accompanying esophageal spasms (the pain of which I am told is comparable to a massive heart attack). So I must treat my problem, and it ain't gonna be with licorice.

THE END

Lemme check my endless list of prescription medications, and I'll tell you which pill I take for acid reflux. It has two names--Pantoprazole (Protonic). I guess is works, because I don't have AR, but then I never did. Same with the statin drug I take for high cholesterol, though I've never had high cholesterol, either. But I'd rather keep swallowing them than trying something as revolting as licorice.

Susan,I found a place you may want to try, medcline.com. If it doesn't work, you get your money back. It does cost
a bit. Wish I could think of something else.

Some of the side effects of real licorice (according to webmd) are high blood pressure, it can exacerbate heart problems - increased heart rate, makes kidney disease worse, hormonal issues, etc. So, it is not without risk if taken daily or in large amounts. The taste is just an added bonus. lol. There may be something else you could take that has fewer downsides and is not disgusting.

On 04/11/2017, Barbara Anne said ...

Amen, sister! I cannot abide the awful flavor of licorice, no way, never, and bleach! Oh, add 'shudder' to that list.

As a nurse, my own opinion for myself is eat what you like in moderation, have waht is insanely rich but lovely occasionally, and eat reasonable the rest of the time. There is no sense in eating what tastes bad - or doing completely without salt (sugar, orwatever) just because somebody thinks you should. Have less. Besides, once you get to be a certain age, it doesn't matter so eat what you enjoy. :)

Hugs!

I have been on a prescriptive drug, Omeprazole capsules, 20 mg 1 daily It has helped me enormously! Also advised not to lie on your right side after a late meal. That also helps! good luck, Susan!!. Untreated, it I can develop into a dangerous situation.

Just finished Ramey Channell's book, "The Witches of Moonlight Ridge." I stayed up until 2 am to finish it and then wished that she had already finished a sequel. Your sister is extremely gifted, as are you!! I loved this book even more than her first book in the series..

My late husband suffered ONE esophageal spasm and after being rushed to the doctor and extensive tests to rule out massive heart attack, the dr told him to stop on his way home, buy a bottle of Mylanta, and take a big gulp. With my hand on the Bible, I can tell you that as the Mylanta slid down his throat, the spasm stopped!!! Needless to say, from that time on there was a bottle in every room of our house, his office desk and even his truck. This stuff works!!!! The black jellybeans are my favorite!!! LOL

You mentioned that maybe it was the brand of licorice that wasn't good. If you want to give licorice another try I would suggest Panda Bear Licorice. You can get it in most health food stores. It is not a strong licorice taste but it is real licorice. We love it. It comes in a box.

On 04/28/2017, Julia said ...

I was just going to recommend 'Panda' but you beat me to it! Sadly I can't get it here in France but devour it when I visit England. Likewise, 'Pontefract' cakes which are little liquorice circles, originating from Pontefract in Yorkshire, but somewhat stronger than 'Panda'. Yum, yum.

Rainbow Rows

H1

I got all my Rainbow Heart rows sewn, but not on Thursday as I had planned. Fate intervened again, and there were suddenly other matters to attend. But this morning, I set to and got all the rows constructed. I haven't sewn the rows together yet though. Note, too, that I now have the rows in the correct rainbow color order--at least judging by all the photos I found on the internet.

H2

I happened to have this scrap of rainbow print in my scrap bag, and I auditioned it as a border. I think it might look great. But I have only about one yard x ten inches, so not nearly enough for a border. I think WalMart maybe still carries this print. I'll check out their fabrics the next time I'm there and see. If I can't get some more, I think there's at least enough of my piece for binding.

Now I think I'm going to go downstairs and sew binding while I watch the new season of "Grace and Frankie" or "Frankie and Grace." I can never remember who comes first.

A Rainbow After the Storm

Hearts

Some of you longtime readers of my blog might recognize these blocks. I constructed them with a charity quiltmaking effort in mind some time back. After I completed the blocks, I apparently lost focus on that project--probably thanks to another project that got me all excited. Who knows which one? They all do.

Anyway as I was putting away things after finishing up Jesse's quilt top, I ran across these blocks and decided I would make them into a cuddle quilt for my guild's charity program before I get started on something else of my own. I can imagine a teenage girl would love this quilt. I'm not sure the rows are in their final order in the photo. I have to look at a photo of a rainbow and see if I have them correct.

I have been trying to get to the sewing room all week, but things get in the way. It has been a stormy stormy week with several power outages, for one thing. Yesterday morning was very stormy. Then things cleared out briefly, and we had another round late yesterday afternoon. A hailstorm, wind, and rain were responsible for the last power outage, which lasted into the night. Today is cloudy and chilly.

Now, let's see how many of those heart blocks I can get sewn together.

Bee on a Stormy Morning

Nancy’s hubby Dave drove me and Nancy to bee this morning through the wind and heavy rain. I was scheduled to drive, but when Dave volunteered, I quickly gave the job to him.

The rain has moved out now, and the late afternoon sun is shining. I’ve had a brief nap to recover from the busy morning. So now I’m ready to show our goodies from this morning’s show and tell.

IMG_0878
I think this was my favorite of the meeting. Nancy's 4 1/2” I Spy Tumblers made by a happy quilt.

IMG_0887
Another beauty from our new member Nancy. This is not as complicated as it looks. It has only two blocks, a square unit cut from a strip set (rose, white, and aqua) and a solid square of fabric (grey with birds).

IMG_0888
Nancy recycled trimmed corners from other quilt blocks to make this sweet little doll quilt.

She says he does great work.

Hi Susan, I enjoyed seeing all the new photos and especially am fond of the second quilt you showed. Not only do I like the pattern but the colors as well. We have a local quilt show going on at our museum in town. Only 30 entries this year but they were all interesting and wonderful to look at. Dave and I try to go every year to it. I am actually going to try and do a wallhanging quilt that I found in the new quilt magazine that arrived at my door. Happy to hear you found a long arm quilter to use for the awesome quilt you made for your grandson too. All the best.
