'Tis the Season To Be Busy

No time for blogging, quilting, or reading. I do as many chores as I can do, then I flop on the couch or in the bed. I hope things slow down a little bit soon.

I did make it to church yesterday to find our little sanctuary all decked out for Christmas. It's an awful cell phone photo, but the place was really warm and beautiful.

What lovely and welcoming sanctuary decorations to simply prepare for the Christmas season.

I hope your energy lasts for all you want to do or need to do. Might you consider having a family party so all hands can help you get your decorations down from storage and maybe decorate? The perfect lure for all helpers would be serving your delicious Santa Fe Soup.

You know I'm with you doing a bit and resting a lot. It's annoying but a little at a time, things are accomplished. Gotta love shopping on-line and home delivery for ease of that kind of accomplishment!

Hugs!

New Farm Girl Blocks

IMG_0294
Remember a few weeks ago when I ordered Lori Holt's Farm Girl Vintage book with the intent of making a sampler quilt?  An intent that I still have. Well Lori has come out with some more patterns, which she calls Companion Blocks for this quilt. I, of course, had to have them too. Well, some of them. I downloaded (which you can do after you pay $5.98 for each pattern) the Cow, the Bee, and the Pig (Pig not shown in above photo). I might get the Cat later.

When I have finished the Owl Quilt, I'm going to start on the sampler blocks with the goal of finishing at least one a week.

Speaking of the Owl Quilt, thanks to all of you who made suggestions about what to do to fix my sloppy blanket stitch. I cleaned my bobbin case and all the area around it. It did have quite a bit of lint and strings. My air can was all out, so I just used my brush. That seemed to help, but didn't fix the problem completely. Then I fiddled with tension some, and that seemed to help some more, with only an occasional bad stitch.

I would have changed thread, but the spool I'm using is the only black I have. I do have the same thread in both the top and bobbin, same thread.

I fiddled with the tension a little more and kept stitching test rows. Something I did seems to have fixed the problem. I have just a few more areas to blanket stitch and I can put the rows together.

I do admire your skills at cutting, applique (machine and hand), and all you accomplish despite fatigue. Applause, applause!

Farm Girl is so cute and I can tell those patterns make your heart sing and what could be better than that? Hobbies and passions should bring you joy.

I'm finishing up a couple of flip-and-sew table runners that will be Christmas gifts for friends and am smiling that it's still November. :) Next up are two small panels, one Laurel Burch and the other of Scottie dogs and a Christmas tree. Both are too cute and wonderfully colorful.

Hugs!

You just keep ranting all you want. Sew all you want. If it brings you joy, do it! I trust your values.

Half the citizens of Syria are officially displaced. I cannot imagine what that does to the morale of the citizens who are not displaced. We are just so incredibly blessed and spoiled here in the US, UK, Australia, and other countries that have been so spared. I have never once worried about being bombed while grocery shopping.

If Jesus taught the parable about the Good Samaritan, what would He teach about a refugee whose home looks that the pictures you showed?

I taught many refugee children in my former teaching career. I cannot imagine any of their parents being terrorists. Many of them were Muslims. Like most Muslims, they were dedicated to peaceful, loving living.

Thank you for your blog!!!

The Best Cure

Owls3

We all know what's the best therapy for getting our minds off the troubles of the world: stitching. And that's just what I've been doing this morning. I have one more owl to go, then I can put my rows together and decide if I want to quilt it myself or take it to Lena to do on her longarm.

I'm having trouble with my machine blanket stitch (see photo below). It's leaving space between the two threads in some of the stitches. I have changed needles, thinking maybe I had a barb. Didn't help. I rebooted the machine. Didn't help. I rethreaded the machine and bobbin. Still no help. Does anybody know what could be causing this? It's a Bernina 1530. Old machine. Maybe it's just worn out.

Trouble

Good solution to dive into stitching to have fun and get your mind on other things. I plan to hand stitch a binding in a few moments.

I have a Bernina Virtuose 153 Quilter's Edition but haven't used the blanket stitch so cannot offer any suggestions. Good luck!

Hugs!

Hi Susan -
Have you tried fiddling with the tension adjustment? I would give it a whirl on a test piece and see if that improves things.

Same thread brand on top and bobbin? My Bernina now does best with Aurifil ------ hates Coates & Clarke. A thread wrapped around post where bobbin goes in. If worse comes to worse, a ride down to Bernina place at Hancock's.

(I know that you may have thought of this, so overlook this if you have.) Do you have a can of air? The type that has a long straw type nozzle? I was having trouble with my machine. I tried everything and still it was skipping stitches. I remembered I had a can of air, so I thought why not try to clean it? Oh my stars, the thread that came out of it!! It was almost embarrassing! It worked!! So, maybe it is something as simply as that. Fingers-crossed:)

Just a thought, but are you using a good stabilizer on the back? Love the owls

On 11/21/2015, Jane said ...

I once had a problem with my Bernina skipping parts of a programmed stitch and was desperate to find relief. The repair guy at my Bernina shop asked me when was the last time I had oiled my machine. Too long ago, apparently. A drop of oil and the problem was solved. Don't know if this will help, but hope you do find a solution soon!

Why Don't the Syrian Refugees Just Stay Home?

Wouldn't they rather be in their own country? Someone asked me this. Here's some of the answer.

Add to that rape, torture, murder, fear, starvation, sickness. Would you want to stay?

I promise, this is it for my Christian rant. I'll be back to quilting, furbies, and fibromyalgia tomorrow.

There was an article in our paper that had a picture of an older woman, 105!!! Her 67 year old son and grandson had carried her on their backs for 20 days! There were 17 members of her family that made the trip to Greece. What is it? That, that is the only alternative you can see for yourself? I think this is the saddest comment on humanity we have seen in some time. That little face in your blog yesterday was something, makes you want to DO something.... It makes me cry.

I Was Hungry, and You Fed Me

The little Syrian girl in the photo above is raising her hands in an "I surrender" motion to a foreign journalist. Look at her little face. If she instills hatred and fear in you, something is wrong with you, not her.
I'm sorry. I try to remain non-political here, but to me this isn't political IT'S HUMAN. Why should innocents be reviled and rejected because of what demented murderers who share their nationality do? After all, 90% of the terrorist acts committed in America have been committed by Americans.
I'm as mad as hell this morning. The same people who scream the loudest about this being "a Christian nation" are rejecting these people. That attitude goes against not only what Jesus taught but also the values that built this country (after it was taken away frm the natives). You don't have to take my word. Look it up: the Book of Matthew and the inscription on The Statue of Liberty will tell you all you need to know.
I hope those of you who disagree won't hold my values and beliefs against me. I just had to vent.

I agree with you 100%. To judge and condemn an entire nationality of people for the heinous acts of a few in my mind makes us no better than the terrorists. I have seen very little compassion from "Christians" on social media and it breaks my heart. There are parents with children who have no home or country, who don't know if they will live or die and yet they board boats in desperation knowing they may lose their lives or the lives of their children who they love with the same love we as Americans have for our own. I don't know what the solution to the problem is and I don't think anybody else does but I pray the right thing will be done for these people. God bless us all.

AMEN, Sister! I wonder how many people in Congress and in nameless political parties hold their heads up in church on Saturday or Sunday and even look at themselves in the mirror as they turn their backs on these refugees and vote to let the water and air be polluted, to sell our national parks to the highest bidder (mining, logging, fracking), defund healthcare, throw those who are retired or disabled under the poverty level bus, deny access to medicinal cannabis to those in need causing them to suffer instead of getting relief, to let democracy be sold to the wealthy, and to enrich the already rich. Despicable, one and all.

Jesus wept.

While what you write is true, I wonder if it wouldn't be better for them to stay in their own homeland? I read an article by Franklin Graham when this whole Syria thing started. Thearticle was a written open letter to our president and his administration and the people of the United States. I hope you will forgive me for paraphrasing here as I don't have his letter right in front of me right now. He wrote that after 40+ years of working with refugees with Samaritans Purse, he knows refugees and has a pretty good idea of what they really want. They want to stay in their own homeland, they do not want to be displaced to a country they are not familiar and can't speak the language of. At all costs they want to stay so why don't we and others help set up 'safe zones' within the country for them? Maybe, just maybe, he is right and this would be a better way in which we could serve Christ and our fellow man.
I know if the tables were turned, rather than me going to a place I do not know and do not want to go to, I would so much rather stay in my own country even if it may not be my home or my home state. These are difficult situations and difficult times may God bless us as we strive for obedience and wisdom to do what is best.

On 11/17/2015, Elisabeth said ...

Hey Marsha,
Thanks for your thoughts in the comments. I've also spent many years working with refugees and in conflict zones in Africa and Asia. There is no doubt that people (anyone really!) would prefer to live in their own country under a peaceful government.

But that is not what's happening for Syrians and many other people in the region. They are being threatened, captured, bombed and killed - often by their own government - and they need refuge to be protected and recover.

That is what we in the west can offer, temporary refuge while the war is raging, to protect the women, children and men who need it.

Thank you for your post Sophie. I couldn't agree more.

And since we're on the subject - one more comment... If we in the west ignore these children and refuse them the kindness and refuge that every member of the human family has a right to - I am worried that they will become ripe for radicalization by extremists and will be our future terrorists.

If we show them what we are truly made of and extend peace to them, we protect them now and ourselves in the future.

How do people think we all ended up in this country? (except for the Native Americans) Because someone in our past (recent or distant) wanted to stay in their country but wasn't able to because of war, discrimination, poverty. There are a lot of people who take up a seat in church but don't seem to let the message sink in and become believers in the message of Christ.

We found that we both were both fairly new to this area. I am from the Midwest. He and his wife were from Syria. I moved my family here by choice. They moved to save themselves. He said his family is now scattered all over many countries. He said if it wasn't for Facebook he would have no way of knowing where they were. I told him how very sorry I was for his country. For the people still there. I said I hoped the people here were kind to him. He said they were and that his co-workers were very supportive.
It makes me so sad to read about people encouraging hatred and ignorance. Thankyou for bring a beacon of hope and compassion in a world full of fear.

Pray for Paris--and My Sis

What a heartbreak to turn on my tv last evening and see what had happened in Paris. When I saw all those people calmly leaving the stadium, singing the French National Anthem, I lost it. I pray God's comfort and peace on all the French people, especially the injured and the loved ones of those who were killed.

We also had some scary excitement in our family. On Thursday night, a man tried to break into my sister Joanne's house. The noise woke her up, and she got a look at him on her back porch. She immediately called the police, who came quickly. But the burglar had already fled the scene. Joanne had been asleep on the couch. After the police came, they discovered the man had thrown two rocks through her bedroom window.

But Joanne is ok, and she's thinking of getting a dog.

We live in a scary world.

My heart is breaking for those affected and harmed by the senseless attacks in Paris, too. How can people turn their backs on the peaceful message of Islam and choose hatred, murder, and destruction instead?

How horribly scary for your sister but am so very thankful she escaped harm. Hope there was at least a good fingerprint to lead the police to the intruder. A noisy dog, sticker bushes (like holly) under the windows, and motion detector lights are good deterrents to those intent on breaking in.

Big hugs!

I have my two dogs and they guard the house all the time with their big dog barks. I always say that I don't mind being the house on the block with the noisy barking dogs. Hopefully the burglars will just move on when they hear all that racket!

Happy Friday the13th

Taco says this is a good time to remind you that black cats are not bad luck. In fact, one of the luckiest days of our lives, mine and Jesse's, was when this sweet beast and his sister Bella came to live with us. Sophie might beg to differ, but it's true. It was also a pretty lucky day for the kitties too.

Happy Veteran's Day

Paul and Karen
Veteran, Marine, and former police office, my dear friend and neighbor Paul C. and his beautiful wife Karen. Paul and Vann were fast friends.

A great big THANK YOU to all our veterans out there--man, woman, and beast. The rest of us should take a moment today to give some thought to the sacrifice they have made to serve our country. I have many friends who are veterans, but I don't have photos of them all. I did find a photo of my friend and neighbor Paul and his wife Karen that Vann took a few years ago. But to all my veterans friends--I love you; thank you for your service.

The War on Thanksgiving

I could hardly get out of bed this morning, I'm so distraught over McDonald's War on Thanksgiving. Actually I knew nothing about this Turkey Day assault until I walked into my local Mickey D.'s and discovered their coffee cups bear no turkey likeness.
In an effort to be politically correct and not offend vegetarians, vegans, and folks who just don't like turkey, McDonald's has opted to not include the time-honored turkey on their disposable coffee cups. Instead They will use turkey-poop brown cups with the word McCafe (what does that mean anway?), some kind of demonic symbol, and a warning that their coffee might be hot. (You will note that they failed to add the word DUH.)

This is obviously, as all Thanksgivians know, a direct attack on that hallowed gustatory event, invented by the Pilgrims at Plymouth Rock when they all clapped their hands over their hearts, sang "The Star Spangled Banner," pledged allegiance to Old Glory, then chowed down on welfare food given to them by the native savages.

"Henceforth," declared President Reagan (who had been invited by the head Pilgrim) we shall repeat this practice every year and call it Thanksgiving."

"But only after we slaughter all these native savages or otherwise drive them from their land so we can have it, as Jesus intended," the Head Pilgrim reminded him.

We devout Thanksgivians are not going to stand for this brown paper cup sacrilege. We know it is just the first volley in what will no doubt be a nationwide War on Thankgiving. We will fight to protect not only our Thanksgiving paper goods but also our inflated lawn turkeys, our Autumn leaf door wreaths, and our inalienable right to say GOBBLE GOBBLE!

Wake up, America! It's time to take back our Turkey!

Note: if you have not yet heard of the Starbucks red cup atrocity, you might not get that this is satire. But it is.
