Today is Pink Saturday over at Beverly's How Sweet the Sound blog. And I am also declaring today "Thank a Union Member Day." So if you or someone you love enjoys or has ever enjoyed the fact of weekends, vacations, fair wages, reasonable working hours, safe working conditions, child labor laws, medical leave, family leave, and much more, thank a union member today. We have much to be thankful for in this country, and most of it, like labor laws, is due to the struggles (and sometimes deaths) of men and women who fought to make it so. Let's not forget their struggles. This is dedicated to the memory of my daddy, a lifelong union man.

Amen! I think too many people have forgotten what it was like before labor laws. Maybe the book "Triangle: the Fire that Changed America" should be mandatory reading in high school.

You're right Susan. It's too easy sometimes to forget what the people before us fought for - better conditions for everyone. Without them there would be a lot more sweatshops and people starving. An awful lot of social change all around the world was brought about by unions - I certainly think about how the mining unions improved conditions for the miners and their families in the UK.

My husband grew up (sort of) in Montgomery. We went to visit every summer while his parents were living.

Thank you for this reminder. Many men and women have served are great country in many ways. We all need to honor and remember those that helped make us a strong and proud USA.
