If you don't follow Quilters Newsletter Blog, you might not be aware that we lost a quilter in Saturday's massacre in Tuscon. Here's a excerpt from QN's blog post about Phyllis Schneck.
"Phyllis Schneck spent summers in her native New Jersey and the rest of the year in Tucson, where she and her husband of 56 years, Ernest Schneck Sr., moved in 2000. Ernest died in 2007. In New Jersey and Arizona, Phyllis Schneck was active in church and women’s clubs. Family and friends interviewed in the wake of her death, all noted two things: she was a great cook and a whiz with a needle and thread. Her daughter, B.J. Offutt said her mother was active in quilting, crafting and Bible-study groups at her church. She helped create quilts the church sold two or three times a year to raise money for mission.
A New Jersey friend called Phyllis Schenck 'an activitst for her community,' and many noted her generosity. A pastor at her Tucson church said: 'Phyllis just had this very sweet spirit…She had sort of a quiet way about her, but on the other hand, she just had a poignant sense of humor.' "
I send my sympathy and condolences to anyone who was a friend or family member of Phyllis. Is sounds like the world lost a fine lady and Heaven gained an angel.

Last night, I watched an "American Masters" episode on PBS about the life of actor Jeff Bridges. I learned some very interesting things, like there are oodles and oodles of Jeff Bridges movies that I haven't seen. So I have another goal for 2011: catch up on Jeff's movies. I think I want to start with "Fat City" or maybe "Fearless" or "The Fabulous Baker Boys." It's going to be hard to decide.
I loved "True Grit," "Crazy Heart," and "The Big Lebowski." I guess those are my three favorites that I've seen thus far.
What is your favorite Jeff Bridges movie?

The loss of a elderly quilting friend in TX made me aware in a new way of all the knowledge that leaves the world when someone dies. I, too, send my sympathy to Phyllis' family and friends. May her generosity and good humor live on in all of us.
As for Jeff's movies, my favorite is Starman with Karen Allen from 1984.
Hope your weather is better and that you're feeling better, too.
Hugs!

Ditto, Ditto in all that you said about Phyllis. Indeed we have lost a great lady.
My all time favorite Jeff Bridges movie is also Starman. Don't let the title fool you, it is a wonderful chick flick full of love.

Tragic loss of Phyllis--so sad.
I like Starman the best of Jeff's movies. His dad was also a fine actor, and brother Beau ain't bad. Jeff was good in Seabiscuit, too, but the horse was a bit better.

I was watching last night's memorial service and President Obama caught my attention when he said 'quilter' as he talked about this lady. Thanks for the link to her story on the blog. It was nice to read more about Phyllis Schneck.
'Starman' is definitely my favorite of Jeff Bridges' movies. Seems like a lot of us agree on that choice!

So sad about Phyllis and all the victims of that senseless tragedy. It boggles the mind.
Yes, Starman is my favorite Jeff Bridges movie. It was such a sweet little movie, and if I'm not mistaken, it was nominated for Best Picture, or he was nominated for Best Actor. I remember seeing his smiley face at the Oscars. That was the year of Gandhi and Greystoke, the Legend of Tarzan, both also nominated. Gandhi won for whichever category Star Man was nominated.
The Big Lobowski, Tucker, Rancho Deluxe, K-PAX, also my favorites!

Thanks for sharing Phyllis' memory with us.
I love the movies you mentioned. Also Starman like Barabara Anne. I think Crazy Heart might be my favorite. I think he was just fantastic in that. I never could get into FBB. Don't know why. Maybe I should watch it again now that I'm older. Maybe it's because I don't like the female star in it very much. Michelle Pfifer, right? I don't really mind her, but I didn't much like her in this one for some reason.

Phyllis Schenck's daughter lives in my county. Her daughter is in an orchestra and she actually played in a performance that night. Our local paper had a write up on her. Sorry we have lost a quilter and wonderful person in such a revolting fashion.
Jeff Bridges is one of my favorite actors too. Love Starman and Fabulous Baker Brothers and many others.

WELL! I think I'd best see "Starman" again. I don't remember being awfully impressed with it, but I think I need a second opinion. It seems to be THE Jeff Bridges movies to watch. Thanks all.

I don't think the movie "Starman" was all that great. I just really liked him in it for some reason!

The Fabulous Baker Boys, hands down! He is to die for -- but I never saw Starman; maybe I'll have to watch it on Netflix before my free trial runs out.
