Yesterday was the monthly meeting of Birmingham Quilters Guild. After detoxifying my car from the after effects of having a styrofoam container of catfish spend the night in it, I drove the 20 miles to the Homewood Senior Center to attend. Glad I did. It was a great meeting.
Here's some of our clothesline show-and-tell. Please 'scuse the photography. Our guild has grown so much that our meeting room has become too crowded to get really good shots.
My show-and-tell: the teddy baby quilt top and the Georgia Bonesteel cat quilt that my sister Joanne made and gave me.
Above is the Caldwell Memorial Quilt that guild members have been working on for several months. Two years ago, two beloved guild members, retired pediatrician Dr. Tom Caldwell and his daughter Cathy, were killed in an auto accident. When completed, this quilt will be displayed on a bed at The American Village, a reproduction of an 18th century American village that is located just south of Birmingham at Montevallo. Some of Dr. Tom's passions, in addition to quilts and quilting, were history and genealogy. I think he and Cathy would love this quilt and appreciate the tribute.

Our speaker for yesterday's guild program was Bonnie Browning, executive show director with the American Quilter's Society in Paducah, Kentucky. Bonnie is also a prolific quilter, quilt book author, teacher, and speaker. She spoke on borders and binding yesterday, and had some excellent information to share. Below are some photos of the quilts she shared with us. Not all of them were made by Bonnie, but I didn't keep notes (shame on me) and am not able to remember which were hers and which belonged to others.
I do remember that Bonnie said this quilt was created by Linda M. Poole. It was one of my favorites. I love Linda's fairies.
And I recall that this one was Bonnie's. I love this quilt with its ruched flowers. I remember this one because Bonnie said that some of the leaves were hand appliqued and some were machine appliqued. She had to switch to machine to meet a deadline for this quilt. Can't tell the difference unless you're up close.
Got to skeedaddle now. I have lots and lots of stuff that needs tending. Hope everyone is having an excellent week so far.

What glorious quilts! The Caldwell quilt is just the perfect way to honor your dearly departed friends. Thanks so much for taking us along with you to show and tell!
Reese's quilt is utterly charming!
If memory serves, Linda Poole made a quilt based on antique postcards of scenes of a young couple's life: The Proposal, The Wedding, and so on. I saw the quilt at the Houston show and was mesmerized. My grandmother had those very postcard, matted and framed, and my mother inherited them. Now I have them and cherish them. Linda's fairies are delightful!
Use your spoons wisely, my friend!
Hugs!

What a beautiful bunch of quilts! I love your teddy baby top, and thanks for showing the Bonesteel cats.
The Linda Poole quilt is wonderful--those photo corners. Seeing the Guild photos makes me want to get busier and finish some of mine.

Susan, such beautiful, beautiful quilts! I am not a quilter but there are several ladies here who do a wonderful job. I have some very old quilts that came through my family and my husband's family. I'm not so much into country decorating so don't use them for that purpose but I do love them. I used to make pallets on the floor with them when the kids and grandbabies were tiny. Sometimes still do if they want to watch TV or if they are sick and want to snuggle! I'm finally finished with your Christmas box and hope to have it in the mail this week!

Oh my, these are pretty! I use to really enjoy applique. I wonder if the arthritis I have in my thumbs would allow me to try it again??? Tomorrow is CM. I can't believe I'm actually looking forward to a TV show again!
