I'm getting a bit of a late start this morning. But here I am. I have a great report from one of our blogless retreaters, Barbara. The photos show the quilt she's working on.

And below is what Barbara has to say about this project (a most interesting story).
"I am quite pleased to have finished three of these finicky blocks after having one lone block looking at me for years and years," begins Barbara. "DS1 designed this block when he was 17, and he'll be 31 on Christmas Eve. Hang my head! All those years ago, he chose the fabrics and the layout, and only one fabric has changed and one design decision changed in the meantime.
"These blocks are to be grouped in sets of four as they appear in the second photo. A 1" green sashing will separate the six groups of four blocks. The first border will be that same 1" green, then a 2" black border, a 2ish" border of Celtic knot fabric (cream design on black background), and a black outer border. Initially, there were to be Escher blue cornerstones; but about six years ago, those were deleted as being too bright. The third border fabric was to be a lovely paisley with the quilt colors deliciously in the design, but that became the Celtic knot fabric about four years ago. My son is a graphic designer, so he has definite ideas on colors and pattern.
"All those years ago I cut the fabrics, too, and it was difficult to make sense of what I did 13 years ago. It would have been easier to start over.... but I didn't. After years of searching, I found more of the deep red (Kona cotton crimson) and think I know what the black is, but I couldn't find more of the yellow (no information on selvage). DS1 has said making the quilt the original size is fine with him so I may do that. We'll see how much sashing green and border black is left when the original 24 blocks are made."
Thanks for sharing this great project and the story of how it came to be. Good luck in getting it completed. My Vann would love it; GEORGIA BULLDOG COLORS!!!
I'm looking forward to visiting some more blogs today and seeing what you're doing. Some cyber-glitch had me unable to comment on most blogs yesterday, or more of you would have heard from me. I think I have the problem fixed, but not sure.
OK, ladies. SEW ON!

Hi Susie!
Thanks for posting the photos and story for me! I remembered that the black is a Keepsake Quilting Amish black and it is the richest, most beautiful black on the plant - IMHO! I've just ordered 3yds of it so I don't have to sweat having enough for the the borders.
I'm getting a late start, too, but must press and cut that Kona crimson fabric before I can proceed. Each block takes eight 4"x 3.25" squares for those side center block units.
Happy sewing everyone! Hugs!

Susan, What a great idea this retreat is! Barbara's very special quilt, designed by her son, is amazing! Best of luck to everyone as we sew on! Sandy Gail (Sandra Neel Hutchins)

That's pretty neat. I know how hard it can be to restart a quilt after being away from it for a year or two. So, 15 years must be really hard! Thanks for sharing!
