For a long time, I've wanted a small piece to use in my kitchen for an island. I knew it had to be small because there's just not that much space between my sink and Gertrude. When I would mention my desire for an island to Vann, he would always say, "No. It would just be in the way."
Saturday, when Andy and I went to get the corner cabinet, this table was sitting in the same dining room as the cabinet. After I made the deal for the cabinet and paid the gentleman, he patted his kind of ugly dining room table and said, "You don't know anyone who needs a table and chairs, do you?"
Now I had had my eyes on this painted table ever since arriving at his home. "No," I answered. "But I might be interested in this," I added, pointing to the table I wanted, "if you want to sell it."
"Let me call my wife," he answered--which he did. She gave him a price, he told me, I spit in my hand and the deal was struck. Well, no, I didn't really spit in my hand, but I felt like doing just that to seal the deal before he changed his mind.
Not only did I get the cabinet and the table at what I considered good prices, but the nice man pulled his son out of bed and they loaded both pieces onto our truck.
At home, Jesse and his friend Robert came and unloaded the furniture--the same young men who brought in, uncrated, and assembled my new dining room furniture. "Where do you want this table to go?" he asked as they brought the piece in. "In the kitchen," I told him. "Where?" he asked again. "Right there," I said, pointing to the spot between the sink and Gertrude. "That's just going to be in the way," said Jesse.
"Who appointed you Vann Cleveland?" I asked. He laughed and asked, "Is that what he would say?" I assured him it was. I think Jesse was a little please that he was being compared to his grandpa. Jesse and Robert obligingly set the table just where I wanted it. I think it works just fine and not in the way at all. In the way of what?
I love this table. It's the same height as my counter tops, and it gives me extra counter space that I desperately needed. And the colors work so well in my kitchen. Oh, the red stool under the table is Vann's. It has been sitting in the basement, just waiting for me to find the right table for it to sit under. I'm going to make a pretty seat cover for it.
So that's the story of how I found the perfect kitchen island for The Yellow House. Now click on the button below and hop on over to Cielo's House in the Roses and see what other cottage dwellers are showing and telling.

Susan, I know it's a sin to covet, but I'm having real strong emotions towards that table of yours!!! It's great. I think it found the perfect spot. Enjoy!! The cake doesn't look bad, either! Yum.

Love your table. What a serendipitious (sp)find. If you ever want to sell it I'd pay to ship it to Canada. I'm really enjoying seeing the pictures of the NEW Yellow House, your hard work has paid off.
The cake on the table looks delicious.
Have a great day.

What a lovely little table and it does fit right in. Enjoy - I sure could use something similar - we never have enough counter space do we?

I love the new little table. I can tell that you miss your "Van", makes me sad. It has to be so hard to loose a spouse. Here is a {{{{HUG}}}} for you. Love all your changes.

Way to go, Susan!!!!!!!!!!!! SCORE!! The painted table and it's decorative paintings and colors look wonderful! Well done!
BTW, I used to hear the same thing when I mentioned a small island for our small kitchen. Then, when we reach an agreement on size, DH says he wants to put the cooktop there. What?? NO way, says me. The island must be too narrow and that means food would be splattering on people as they walked by and on the floor all of the time. No way. There the conversation has stalled. Sigh!
Please pass a piece of cake!
Hugs!

I like the table very much! The counter height is great - one reason I replaced my old table with a counter height, plus the 4 chairs. More room and work surface!

WOW! That is the BEST! I want an island so much but have hesitated because of the limited space. However, seeing yours makes me realize I CAN get a small one in my kitchen! See how helpful you are? Your new island is a BEAUTY! Looking forward to seeing the corner cabinet all finished, too! LOVE YOU!

No, its not in the way. I've had the same problem, sometimes I have a table in the kitchen, sometimes not. It is a constant battle of the spouses around here. I love it "in the way of what"! Good for you, looks great!
Thanks for visiting my blog this afternoon!

What a fantastic story! That table is going to be a great island, and it won't be in the way. It will be right where you need it when you are cooking and need a spot to set something down. It is perfect! And the stool is really the cat's meow that really tops it all off.

That's an absolutely darling "County Kitchen" island. I'm using a Hoosier for extra space when we have company but, boy, could I use a narrow little table like this! You did good :)

That table was a great find for your kitchen! The only thing I don't like about my sewing machine table island is that it isn't counter height. You have the best of both worlds! It's very pretty, usable, and you have plenty of space around it to walk.

How funny that Vann's stool works so well with the table that would get in the way!

That's a great little table! It isn't too wide or closed in so doesn't take up much visual space either. Wonderful find.
