Discoveries

Table I didn't feel like cooking yesterday and couldn't find anything in the pantry or fridge that didn't need cooking. So I decided to ride up to Cracker Barrel and have some beans 'n' greens and cornbread.

On the way, I spied a sign with those two magic words "Yard Sale." So, of course, I made a detour to see what treasures there might be.

I have been searching Wal-Mart, thrift stores, and websites for the perfect tablecloth to fit my little round table that I bought at another yard sale a while back. I wanted to use it to showcase my mama's beautiful filet crocheted tablecloth, but I needed an undercloth that would highlight the crochet design. Well, just look what was waiting for me at the yard sale.

You can't really see the tablecloth under the crochet, but it's exactly the right color, and even had the fringed topper and the glass top and the table included. All for $3! So now I have an extra one of those little round tables that the legs screw off.

Mama's tablecloth is spotted with coffee stains. At least there are no cigarette burns though. My mama was notorious for leaving everything she got near with coffee stains and cigarette burns. She quit smoking in her late 80s, having smoked since she was a teenager. But she never gave up the coffee, and I can't blame her for that.

I haven't tried to remove the coffee stains yet. Anybody have any suggestions as to how to get out coffee stains without washing the whole piece?

CANDLE After enjoying my beans 'n' greens and cornbread, I browsed around a little in Cracker Barrel's Country Store gift shop. One of you blog readers had told me about a Yankee Candle with a photo of a pillow made from my valance fabric. I found it--and bought it. It's a nice cinnamon fragrance, and the photo also has a pillow made from the fabric that I framed in the old window frame. Sorry I can't remember who told me about the candle. But you know who you are.

What wonderful treasures! Your mama's tablecloth is sooooo pretty! And THREE DOLLARS for all those things? I need to go thrifting with YOU! How ironic & cool that the Yankee candle looks as tho' someone designed it with your room in mind! (I LOVE Yankee candles - have a boatload of the spice scents for Autumn & the Christmasy ones!) Hope you just REST today & enjoy your beautiful Yellow House! LOVE YOU!

Have been looking for a cloth for the round table that was given to my mother as a wedding present in 1938. I never thought of using the cloth that her mother crocheted in the 1920s. What a good idea. If I find the right undercloth, I'll send you a pix.

Good Morning Susan,

I haven't been able to visit for a while, you know life just keeps you busy !! However, this is my morning so here I am with coffee and the house to myself and what do I see but your material on the candle that I just love! I have the cream with the big cabbage roses EVERYWHERE!! (much to my son's dismay) I first bought the bedroom set for the guest room -at Target! then saw it at Joann's by the yard...good thing I have 40% off coupons! So I just have to tell you, you have such good taste :) and also, your home is just beautiful!! Have a wonderful and blessed Sunday.

Well, you lucked out! When I see one of those signs, my heart sort of starts racing, as though it's getting into gear! Do you do that? I love the rabbit lamp! Tales From The Raspberry Rabbits (Shell) would adore that!

Your mother's tablecloth is lovely and I'm thrilled that you have a place to display it so perfectly. Doesn't it make your heart happy?! Th candle with your colors and fabric is more than perfect.

Sigh - beans 'n greens and cornbread, another craving you've flung on me!

... she tiptoes away to find her grandmother's crocheted tablecloth but wonders if the cats would harm it?? ...

Hugs!

To remove the coffee stains, try Biz (my local grocery still carries it). It's a presoak that I've used for ages to get stains out of vintage lace.

Just dab peroxide on the coffee stains with a cotton ball and it will get the stain out wiithout harming the fabric. Rinse well after doing this. Can you believe I've never been to a yard sale???? I know. Crazy. I need to have one but never been to one. Might put that on my bucket list!!

I love filigree crochet and this one with the birds made by your mom is so special! My MIL gave me a lot of linens that had crochet edging done by either her mother or grandmother. I treasure them. Glad to know the suggestions above for getting out stains! Your table looks very lovely with the cloth and candle. Great score :)

That crocheted tablecloth is just gorgeous. Your mother was quite talented! What a wonderful thing to have. Your yard sale find was just perfect for it. How come I can never find stuff I need at yard sales? I must not have the eye some of the rest of you have!
