Consider the Cost

Memorial Day

I think we often forget that this is not a day to celebrate, but a day to remember, mourn, and honor those young people who have lost their lives in all the wars this nation has fought.

Below is a poem I found at BlogHer. Take a couple of minutes to read it and remember and honor those who never came home as well as those who left parts of themselves "over there."

LAMENT

Our nation's history is creased with war.
The earth cries out with spilled lives,
And bleeds memories of those who once lived --
Our young men and women,
Innocent as new spring grasses,
Earnest, willing,
Devoted to their service, their country.

We sent these children to battle
To fight other mother's children,
To wade through the carnage and brutality
From which we tried to protect them as children.

The same children whose skinned knees we bandaged
Are asked to kill or be killed in our name,
Asked to be heroic, to risk their lives,
To risk death
For us.
And others ask the same of their children,
The ones who will oppose our children.

Oh, perished children of America,
We miss what you could have been,
The lives that could have been full.
You left wives, husbands, lovers, children, parents
behind you, mourning.

Oh, today's dying service men and women,
Even as we read this, you are dying.
We almost cannot take it in --
All the suffering of war, the violence.
We are stricken by your courage, your ability to endure.
You do what we cannot.
You face what we cannot.

Oh, beloved sons and daughters,
The memory of your joy haunts us.
We fend off the need to understand how you died in detail,
As though it would bring us peace to know,
But it just adds to our grief.
Without you, there is no lack of grief.
Grief is a sea we drown in,
It is a breath we can never catch,
It surrounds us at the sound of your names.

You laid down your life for
The combatant next to you,
For us,
For your country.
And we remember you.
We cannot stop remembering you,
Your memory is engraved in our souls.

We want to make sure that you died for something important and right.
It is our obligation to lose you for no less than that.

They handed us a flag when we buried you.
It was done with dignity.
We held it, numb with pain at your loss.
Later we took it out of its box and pressed our cheeks to it,
Remembering you.
Looking for some hint of you, some sign.
But it did not bring you home.

Oh, our scarred children, spouses, brothers, sisters --
You who left only a part of yourself dead "over there",
Who come back hurt in the soul.
War killed your innocence, and you cannot get it back.
You walk the house at night, checking the perimeter.
You have memories that haunt you, of the dead, the dying,
Of the fear that was your life 24/7.
You stay armed and ready.
You never sit with your back to the door.
In a corner of your soul, the war just won't stop.
We mourn with you what you have lost.
We welcome you home, knowing who you are, loving you.
Remembering for you when you cannot remember yourself,
What it was like before the war took part of you away.

Oh brothers, sisters, husbands, wives -
The battles have names - the cities names mark the progress of war -
Antietem, Pearl Harbor, Gettysburg, Atlanta,
Wounded Knee, Gallipoli, Little Big Horn,
Verdun, Khanjahar, Normandy Invasion, Rumaila,
Battle of the Bulge, Inchon, Gulf of Tonkin,
Baghdad.

Your deaths spill dreams for a future with you
Into foreign soils.
We wanted family picnics and reunions,
Quiet nights and celebrations.
We dreamed of holding you,
Gathering at your 80th birthday party.
We wanted you to be a parent, an elder,
A member of the community, the tribe.

Oh Lord,
Be with us as we mourn.
This day is not a day for the hearkening of noble sentiment.
It is for remembering, for feeling the cost of war.
It is for knowing the truth -
That any loss is painful, even loss for a cause.
It is for comforting those who have lost,
The mothers, fathers, sisters, brothers,
Lovers, spouses, children.

This is the day we take silence.
This is the day we let ourselves feel
That every loss diminishes what we could have become,
Even if it was lost in a good cause.
This is the day we feel the other side of grief's coin --
The part that hurts and remembers.

This is the day we feel the price of vigilance.
This is the day we remember
Not to put our beloved ones in harm's way,
Unless we are willing to have this day.
This memory.
This moment
When who they were, and what they could have been,
Shimmers before our eyes, a wish that will never come true.

This is a hard day, Lord.
It aches inside.
May all those who recall sacrifices on this day
Find comfort.

And, may the day come when the losses of war
Are only a distant memory,
And our dream of peace comes true.

Reading over your last few blogs. I love what you have done with the living room, and its funny - but blue was always my design color, and recently I have been migrating to reds as well. I wonder if it is because there is more out there in red now? I can so relate to your blog about all the hate, or what I call discontent, in the world. So much going on that we have no control over, and even if we did, I would not know what to do. My husband was out of town this weekend, and I spent much of it at home alone with my sewing. I love to have all the "noise" off in the house, and have some time of quiet and escape from what is going on outside my front door. I am reminded of the verse, "Be still, and know that I am God."

What truth is in that poem! It made me cry, and it also made me even MORE grateful that my grandson got home safe & sound. So many children, mothers, fathers, and friends didn't. Blessings to each and every person who served, or is still serving, on our behalf. Thank you! And thank YOU, Susan, for posting the poem!

We actually had one town decide not to do a parade because it was too much 'celebration.' I'm not sure I agree with that. I think we are celebrating how great this country is and how lucky we are. As long as we stop to give some thought and/or prayer to the memory of those who's lives were taken for our freedom, celebration has it's place today.
Blessings to all of your family members who have served us.

I appreciated this post. I use that phrase...consider the cost..the sacrifice paid for our freedom! I really felt strongly after reading New York by E. Rutherfurd. Enjoy your week, sweet friend! ♥

Better Red Than Bed

Kitchen 7

Well, as you can see, Sophie has claimed her spot atop the new couch. Fortunately for the new couch, it is much firmer than the last one and so doesn't squoosh down with her weight. I have also, as you can see, covered it with a big quilt so that neither one of us can get it dirty. The quilt will come off for company. Otherwise it will have to remain part of the decor.

I had to go out yesterday to buy lining for the valance. Could find only a yard or so of the type Daniel wants. So I think I'm just going to ask him to get it from his source and I'll pay him. I hate running all over town looking for one thing. Hancock's says they'll get in more next week, but couldn't tell me what day next week.

While I was out, I made a few purchases for use in the kitchen redo. I plan to work in this kitchen today (if I ever get myself going). I got a couple of rugs (one for in front of the sink, one for in front of Gertrude (my stove); some new towels to hang on gertrude's oven handle; some pretty red quilted cushions for the chairs; and some pretty yellow place mats.

Kitchen 6

Kitchen 2

I also found a couple more red transferware plates for my dining room shelf. The rooster plate came from Home Goods, and the hollyhock plate came from the flea market mall.

Kitchen 3

Kitchen 5

I have never thought of red as a favorite color; but it seems to be becoming just that. Especially when combined with yellow or a creamy pink. I guess our tastes change as the years go by. For most of my life I was definitely a blue fiend.

So we'll see how much work I get done. I don't have high expectations. The back problem is getting worse, making my hips, legs, and ankles very weak and causing strong cramps in my feet. And this morning, if I sit or stand a certain way, my lower back trembles. I'm seeing my ortho surgeon on Wednesday. I'm going to tell him that either he does something (a block, pain pills, or something) or I'm going to be bedridden. I have already been told surgery is not an option. This is getting pretty scary.

But I do have a cozy king size bed to take to if that should become necessary--and it all decked out with wonderful new yellow beddings combined with older blue ones. I'll be bedridden in style, at least.

Hi Susan,

What a successful shopping trip you had and what wonderful goodies to enhance your new decor.

Sophie looks too cute! Yes, favorite comfort spots are important to our four legged children. Our living room couch is protected from cats by solid colored beach towels and they are not so pretty but are easily laundered.

My color tastes seem to have changed in recent years, too. My past favorites were pink and green, but red and blue with cream and green have taken over my house.

I hope and pray you feel lots better without any drastic procedure being needed. Would taking a home vacation from decorating be helpful?

Hugs!

Your house is just coming along BEAUTIFULLY! You KNOW I love red - still my favorite color - tho', like you, I've added other colors to it since we moved here. Sophie looks VERY content, and I hope YOU remember to climb up on the back of the sofa (so to speak) and get yourself some rest, too. LOVE YOU!

Susan, it's looking great! I know you're only showing us photos of the finished parts - but I'm hoping there aren't too many of the still to be tackled parts left!
You take it easy now - we can't be doing with you bedridden. That wouldn't be good at all - although the bed looks pretty!
best wishes, Helen

Very pretty! You've inspired me - the bottom part of my kitchen wall is paneling and I am going to paint it! Take care. We can't do it all in one day. And yes, let Daniel handle the lining if he can. You can save that spoon.

New Sofa Moves In

Sofa 1

Sofa 3

Sofa 2

Well here it is, and I love it. It's even prettier than I had imagined it would be. I managed to get that side of the living room organized enough to photograph, but I'm not showing you the other side.

It's strange to have little bits of my house all prettied up, and other areas look like scenes from one of those Hoarders shows. Oh well, at least the entire house isn't a mess still.

I talked to Daniel yesterday. He has been very ill, and that's why he hasn't been able to finish the chair slipcover. He says he's ok now and plans to finish the work this weekend and bring the chair on Tuesday. It will sit where Sophie and the recliner are in the first photo above. The valance that Daniel will make will go on the bay windows that you can see behind the recliner.

I have a sore throat this morning, mild vertigo, combined with the usual physical problems that I have all the time. So I don't feel too chipper. Plus we have had wonderful rolling thunderstorms all morning, which, along with the puniness, just make me want to go back to bed. But I have several errands to run before I can do that.

Wishing everyone a safe and happy Memorial Day weekend. And don't forget to thank a veteran, if you see one. I'm going to make rum cakes for my two veterans/neighbors whose help around here makes my life so very much easier.

I see Sophie snug in Vann's recliner. Sweet!

Sorry to hear that Daniel has been ill and am glad he's feeling good again.

Be good to yourself as you feel puny and I hope your errands are brief so you can happily bake as the storms go by. What a nice idea to make rum cakes for the two veterans in your neighborhood.

A Better Day Dawned

First thing: I want to thank every one of you for your caring and your words of advice. Please know that I take all of it to heart. And I'm acting on most of it.

1. No more news for me, at least for a while.
2. No more social networking where politics are involved.
3. Slow down on the house renovation. It will get done when it gets done
4. Explore alternative treatments for fibromyalgia.
5. And keep my eye on the prize, the God who sustains me.
6. Remember to let God handle the problems that I have no control over.

I really do feel better today, thanks especially to all of you. I got out of the house yesterday afternoon, did a little browsing through our local flea market mall. Just being away from here, where all the work awaits me, made me feel tons better. And after, I dropped by Chick-fil-A for a vanilla shake, which REALLY made me feel better.

Mantle 2

So now I want to show you some progress I've made in my living room. Remember the old window that I bought at the thrift store? I ordered a piece of fabric from the same Waverly line as the striped fabric that Daniel will use to make my valence. I glued the fabric to a piece of foam core and stapled it to the back of the old window. That's the result above in the photo of my mantle.

Living Room Quilt

And above is a photo of the quilt I hung in the living room to go with the new color scheme. I bought this vintage quilt several years ago at a yard sale in Mountain Brook. I paid $25 for it and still feel guilty for practically stealing it. The woman who sold it to me could tell me only that it was at least 50 years old and her grandmother made it. I believe it was probably made from one of those prestamped cross-stitch quilt kits, probably in the 50s. Anyway, I love it. The hand quilting, which you can see in the photo below, is amazing. There are some worn places as well as one pretty noticeable stain, but these defects hardly detract from the quilt's charm.

Hand quilting

I just now had a call from a delivery man who has my new sofa on his truck. He will be delivering it sometime today. He promised to give me a 30-minute warning before he gets here. So I'll go now and clear out the spot in front of this quilt where the sofa is going to go. Photos later.

Hey.. check this out:

HGTV's Endless Yard Sale will be back filming this year and we're looking for fun, energetic shoppers to feature on the show. Specifically, we’re on the hunt for teams of neighbors, friends and co-workers (must live in the same town) who’d be willing to compete against each other in a yard selling competition. Each team will be given a budget to makeover a room in their home. If you’ll be shopping 'til you drop, between Chattanooga, TN, and Frankfort, KY, on August 6 -8th, 2010, and you (and your friends) think you have enough personality to share with the nation, e-mail us the details. We want to know your mission and what you love about the "World's Longest Yard Sale!" Please include a photo of yourself. We are casting NOW, so please don’t wait!!

I copied this from the hwy 127 website. You should get some of your Leeds buddies together and apply for this. I'd love to watch you on it! :)

Love that wonderful quilt! And your window is awesome. My old window is smaller, only has six panes. I glued wallpaper cutouts to the back of the panes--grape leaves and clusters. I'm sure you've seen it.

I'm so glad you're feeling better. But feeling better doesn't mean you're supposed to jump up and exhaust yourself all over again. Take lots of time off to rest and renew your body and spirit. After all, it's YOUR house, and your time. Think "me first" for a while.
- Love - JR

Hi Susan,

Glad you're feeling better and you were wise to take yourself away for a play day as therapy! What better than a milk shake to complete the cure?!

Your idea for the window with coordinating fabric turned out well and the quilt is lovely! My mother completed two identical cross-stitch/applique pre-printed pre-quilted quilts from kits back in the 1950s and I have them both! I've never seen a stamped kit from that time that wasn't pre-quilted and none of the quilting was as lovely as the quilting in your quilt. Perhaps they sold stamped tops and I'm just unaware of it.

Cheers that your couch is coming today!!!!!! Let the happy dancing and joyful celebration begin!! Will we see a photo today? Fingers crossed the answer is yes!

Love your blanket chest, too.

I Need a Cheer Pill

Thurs 1 I keep thinking that when I get my house and yard just like a want it, I'll go to bed and stay for a week. That thought, your encouragement, and God's help are all that are getting me through these days. The pain is really bad. And the stiffness and fatigue. My arms and legs feel like they're attached to my body with rusted bolts.

In addition, I seem to be dwelling excessively on all the hate in the world. It seems now that we in the U.S. are supposed to hate everyone if we're good Christians and patriotic Americans. We hate the Muslins, the Latinos, the Liberals or the Conservatives or both, the gay people, the Chinese, the Russians, the Africans, the Koreans, the Buddhists, and now even the Europeans.

I'm so weary with the hate. I can't even watch the news anymore because that's all it's about. Turn on Fox News and you get the hate firsthand; turn on CNN and you have to listen to reports about the hate. You have to really search for the real news and cull it out of all the nyeh nyeh nyeh.

How has this country become a nation of haters? Has it always been this way? Have I had my head up my ---, as one young conservative told me? Is it this way all over the world? Didn't we learn anything that Jesus tried to teach us? Was his sacrifice for nothing?

And there's this; Is it hate, or is it actually fear? And if it's fear, what are we afraid of?

In addition, I just read yet another report on a study that proved yet again that fibromyalgia is real. It also said that the disability effects are comparable to those of rheumatoid arthritis, congestive heart failure, diabetes, recent heart attack, and even cancer. Knowing that, doesn't it seem that the medical scientists could at least find an effective treatment if not a cure?

And then there's that asteroid that's supposed to hit the earth. When do you suppose that's coming?

Whine whine whine whine whine. Moan, gripe, complain. I'm probably bringing everyone down with this depressing post. Should I just delete it and not post today? Probably. But I'm not going to. I need encouragement.

Like you I have had to stop watching the news. It seems like everybody expects you to take one side or the other. Shouldn't be sides. We are all Americans and should stick together more.

And I do think there is a lot of fear out there. People always fear what is unfamiliar to them.

I think when you have a medical condition that you know probably isn't going to get better there are bound to be days when it is just all too much. I seem to have a lot of friends going through trying times at the moment - and sometimes there isn't a whole lot that I can do to help, except be there for them. I hope you can find something today that you can do for yourself that will make you happy - even if it's only for a short time. I know that we are taught that God doesn't load us with burdens that are too heavy for us, but sometimes I wonder. And you're right - the world often isn't a nice place. I've really appreciated the recent political changes in England, where for the first time politicians are having to work together instead of against each other - finally, although the country is in a big mess, there seems to be more of a spirit of co-operation.
I read a nice - and positive - current affairs website that you might like - www.tonic.com - a good friend of mine writes for it.
I can also recommend (highly) a good book with your feet up, a gin and tonic and a bar of very nice chocolate. That always helps me a little when I'm down.
You're in my prayers Susan - with a big hug from cyberspace...
Helen

I tend not to watch. listen or read the news anymore, it makes me too depressed and angry. I suppose its copping out but I am happier if I concentrate my energies on my family, garden , quilting, knitting etc.
I'm sure that stress must be a contributing factor with your fibriomyalgia Susan, so you better stop getting upset about the politicians etc.
As a Canadian I dont see the Americans as being hated, wherever we live we are all people who just want to live our lives. The extremists spoil things for us all.
Hugs and a special prayer for us all today as we're all on this Earth together.

Oh honey, I wish I could come kidnap you and wisk us both off to some wonderful little town in New England ... a place where it's cool and the folks are all sooooooooo welcoming, so we could just forget all the worries of this world! I know it's probably not the best remedy, but I steer totally away from all the news! I find it all sooooo depressing, so I just don't watch it. I can't even remember the last time I tuned in. Every now and then I happen across something on line and I swear it ruins my entire day, so I totally understand why it's got you down; and I'm so very sorry for all your aches and pains. It sounds like a horrid disease and I truly understand how hard it is to live with a chronic disability. Our Daughter endured for 23 long years and now my Hubby is living it w/his back that the Doctors say looks like a train wreck. Prayers will be going up for you my dear and I hope that you'll just sit back, forget everything and get some rest! Perhaps some hand work is in order :) God Bless!

I am sorry that you are feeling so down today. Everyone has these types of days. I just try to look at life as being half full in the glass. I learned this saying from an elementary teacher when I was in 5th grade: This to shall pass. I try to remember that when I am feeling down. Take a break and rest today, watch a good funny movie and relax. All the work will be there tomorrow but you will feel better tomorrow and be able to tackle it better. Know that you are in my thoughts and prayers. Hugs to you!

I very seldom watch the news - I do believe there are also a ton of good things happening in the world, but they are just not so newsworthy, so we never hear about them. I also just skim through the newspapers.
I tend to see the glass half-full, and I also believe I need to focus on just what I can have any control over, and let go of the rest. (The Serenity Prayer) My attempts at control - over my little world right now - include, as you are doing, fixing up my little nest of a home with remodeling, repairing, etc., and - - my quilting. At least I feel I have some control over my quilting.
May tomorrow be a better day for you!

Huge hugs! I'm one who never ever watches FOX or CNN for that very reason. I watch BBC news as it's far less awful. The news may be bad, but hate isn't mixed in.

"God is love"
"God don't make junk."

The evil spewing of hate is just that - evil. I believe that we are called to love, to see all as God's children, to see all creation as God's love in tangible form. Celebrate diversity as God clearly did in creating so many different kinds of plants, animals, elements, bugs, rocks, clouds, and every other thing you can think of. One "right" kind? Nope! Not mere tolerance of differences that can too easily become intolerance, but a real appreciation of our difference. Okay, off that soapbox!

Your blog and many others are celebrating the dailiness of life that we have in common around the globe. You and others add beauty and friendship-forming conversations in the lives of the readers and each blog is a blow for GOOD, and a little 1st Amendment horn.

Be of good cheer!

Hugs!

Okay Missy....here is what you do...turn off the TV, unless you're watching HGTV or FoodTV...or better yet, grab that Kendell and head outside, in the shade, take something cold to drink, grab the Sophie Girl ( on a leash) and relax. Don't let the negative energies get into your head...focus on your health and positive energy will flow around you...

Sorry that things hurt so much today. I have some sense of what that is like. But in good news - last fall I took a chronic pain self-management program (developed at Standford U)that - among other things - helped me understand the interrelationships between pain, stress, sleep troubles, negative emotions, and so on. Learning to lessen one of these broke the cyclical results and helped all the others. It's very encouraging. Email me if you'd like to hear more.

I have been reading and enjoying your blog for quite some time now.Yes Fibro is real. I live with it too. There is not much to say that the others haven't already said. I think of you often and do marvel at all you seem to be etting done in the righting of your own world. Stress is a factor in your pain and of course grief also contributes.I think the suggestion of a cold drink, a good book and a shady spot with Sophie is the best for the moment. Take care and know that we care.

I hear you loud and clear. :-)
Eighteen years ago, our pediatrician told us to only get our news from newspapers because she believed that background TV News noise was detrimental to the well-being of children. It was amazing advice. You can take the newspaper in doses and it doesn't invade so many senses. You also tend to not read articles over and over again, but TV News will pound the same message/images across the airwaves over and over again. So I hear you re: the news...and it has changed over the years...I miss Walter Cronkite. :-)

Have you tried the honey & cinnamon tea every morning, or honey and cinnamon on (unbleached) toast? Mable and I were just discussing this yesterday. I think it's 1 taablespoon honey and 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon, in a cup of hot water or on toast every morning. It's good for everything, esp. heart conditions, allergies, arthritis, diabetes, the list is long. And it just makes you feel better, like a rejuvenated person.

As far as the hate business, it has been a constant force in my world since the '60s when all the good Christian adults hated any young person with long hair or a smile on their face, or a black face. But we have to remember "Be the change you want to see in the world," and that may be about all we can do.

As a fellow sufferer of Fibro (as well as Lupus) I can truly sympathize & relate! It's miserable, I know, but thankfully the symptoms come & go. (Don't we wish they'd just GO!!!) As for news, I watch the WEATHER segment of the local news. Period. I keep up with relevant things via the internet but, like you, I don't like buying into all the doomsday attitude and the rah-rah America; bah humbug everyone else. I'm as patriotic as anyone, but I believe loving our own country does NOT equate with HATING everyone else's! Hatred gets us nowhere good. I choose to LOVE. I know YOU do, too! So don't you worry about the naysayers and the rest. Finally, WE all LOVE you, Susan! And, far as I'm concerned, you can blog your feelings anytime because that's what friends are for! I LOVE YOU!

Susan, like you we find the news so depressing and to make it worse it is repeated ad nauseam -sometimes I think that news (bad that is) has become entertainment. As for atmosphere of hate I equate it with fear and ignorance - it seems so much easier to hate someone (thing) than to try to understand them (it).
Follow all those suggestions regarding getting more rest - remember that old adage "Rome wasn't built in a day" and give yourself some leeway regarding the GYHEM - it will get done.

I avoid Fox News like the plague. If I go into a doctor's office and it's on, I ask them to change it. I have never heard such cruel hate as I've heard there. I think people are scared. And when they're scared, they go to extremes. It's terribly sad. Blog Land is a good place to come. Because we love you.

I don't know if you have ever considered taking a holistic approach to treating your fibromyalgia as apposed to traditional medicine. There is a website...drwhitaker.com that may have info to consider.

I have diabetes and am considering a different approach since the drugs they prescribe are so strong and have many side effects. (namely kidney and liver damage) I have also noticed Dr Whitaker's ads on some of the other blogs I read. He is pretty well known. Just a thought.

I know it's hard in today's world to keep a positive attitude but it's the best thing we can do for our own sake. Best of luck to you. Tomorrow's a new day!

Susan, you know that you & I are at opposite ends of the political spectrum, but that doesn't mean we must hate each other or anyone with opposing views, for that matter. Scripture says we are to love each other... even our enemies (you are not my enemy, btw.). And we are to pray for them. My suggestion: TURN OFF THE TV!!!! Put on some praise music and permeate your environment with it. The enemy (satan) is trying to steal your joy. You have the most effective weapon of all ... The Word. Read Ephesians. You already know it but we all need reminding from time to time when things overwhelm us. Don't give up. Spend your day in His Word, praise Him and refuse to give your thoughts over to the enemy's sly tactics. He knows where you are weak and will attack you there. But remember the source of your strength. I will repeat... quit listening to the news, quit talking about politics, quit anything that takes your focus off of Him. He will restore you. Love you, girl!

Firstly, thank you for wonderful blog which I seldom comment on. As to the hate, I saw a bumper sticker a couple of years ago, which I say as a prayer every morning and night. "God bless everybody in the world, NO EXCEPTIONS." I feel better and treat others better, I hope, as a result.

As to the news, remember when we trusted Walter Cronkite or David Brinkley to give it to us straight. But that was in a less than 30 minutes a day. That is all we should watch news, no matter the source. 30 minutes, after that it is no longer news it is pushing advertising, and no good to anyone. But don't give up, God only gives us as much as he thinks we can cope with, and he must think highly of you. Blessings.

Sorry you are discouraged but things will get easier and if not God will give you the strength to get through.
I noticed several comments blaming the Fox network for things. I think they are allowed to present their opionions also. Too much is lost when the majority goes with the popular choices without thinking through the consequences of making choices. God says we are to love the sinner but hate the sin and I applaud people who are not afraid do that. Our morals, role models and the entertainment community have all taken a big downslide and too many people believe in doing whatever makes them feel good and don't worry about the consequences or example our young see.

That Dog!

That Dog I hope today holds no surprises, no excitement, no fear. Yesterday was enough.

Early yesterday morning, I decided to get my bulbs planted. I had some hostas and some lily bulbs that should have been in the ground a couple of months ago. Usually when I work in the yard, Sophie hangs with me. Sometimes I have to call her to come back when she wanders over to an adjoining yard and she reluctantly returns.

So I'm sitting on the ground, digging in the dirt and I realize Sophie is out of sight. So I call. She doesn't come, so I call some more. And she doesn't come, so I get up and go looking for her. Looking and calling; looking and calling.

A couple of neighbors hear me and come out and start helping look. They call other neighbors, and pretty soon a good portion of my neighbors are out looking for the black dog.

Gene gets his four-wheeler out, the sound of which will sometimes bring Sophie running to get a ride. No Sophie. So Gene rides the woods behind Bob's house where squirrels are known to frequent. No Sophie.

Meanwhile others are combing the neighborhood in their cars. Paul even goes out of the neighborhood, up on the main road nearby to see if she has wandered over there.

And what am I doing? I'm practically running all over the neighborhood, up hills and down hills, calling and yelling and getting more panic stricken by the moment. Had it not been for the panic, I don't think I could have done that. Every time Gene sees me, he tries to get me to got sit down and let them look. He's worried I will have a heart attack of something. But I won't go; I have to find my Sophie.

Anyway, long story short, a couple of hours later, when I have almost given up but am still calling Sophie and crying and crying and calling and praying, we get a break in the case. I'm in the front yard asking God to please let Sophie come home and I look down the street. There in Nolan's yard next door is Gene, holding up what appears to be a very dirty Sophie.

Gene had spotted her from the street, and called but she wouldn't come. When she saw him, she tried to hide in the hedges. But Gene got her anyway. She had been digging for some kind of critter. She was dirty all over and there was mud up to her ears where she had her head stuck down in the hole she had dug, sniffing for the critter.

Soph I was in such a state of pain and fatigue that I wasn't able to bathe her. I just brushed her off as best I could, took a bath myself, swallowed some ibuprofen, and stayed in Vann's recliner the rest of the day. Sophie knows she did wrong. I can tell. This morning, I let her go out for the first time since her recovery without a leash. She waited beside me at the door until I said "go," then she stayed with me the whole time we were out. But no more letting her roam around while I do yard work. I just couldn't take that kind of fear again.

Andy had been trying to call me all during the Great Sophie Belle Search, and was about to come looking for me when she finally reached me. I told her the story and she laughed and laughed and assured me it would be funny to me too later on. It's not funny yet. I still can feel that terrible panic, knowing that my sweet stubborn Sophie might be gone for good and I'd never know what happened to her. I vow to be a better doggie mom from now on and not let her wander.

And I'm considering calling the Betty Ford Center for Critter Addiction (obedience school) and getting Sophie some treatment for critter detox.

You're a very good doggy mom, but this time you had one disobedient doggy child. I suppose every now and again instinct overrules learned lessons.

Cheers for kind neighbors and friends who searched near and far for Sophie!

Yep, funny someday, but not today ...!

Thank the good Lord that she is okay! I can understand how you feel. One day Margot was laying half on her bed and half on the floor - very unsual. I went up to her and gently shook her and called her name, no response, tried again, no response. I almost had a heart attack and scooped her up - hubby jumped out of bed in a panic. Margot was fine - she had just been very sound asleep! What these dogs do to us! So happy that Sophie is home with you and happy your cranky neighbor didn't get involved! Sounds like you have a fabulous neighborhood.

Oh dear. Those girls of ours sure can get into trouble, can't they?
We once owned a wonderful Airedale named Daniel. My husband kept him off leash all the time when he was working in the yard. One time Daniel didn't come back when he was called. We searched and searched and couldn't find him any where. I remember standing in my driveway in the middle of the night wondering where on earth he had got to. The next morning, our son was riding his bike doing his paper route in the neighborhood, and heard Daniel barking. It turns out there was another family nearby who had an Airedale, and some do-gooder neighbor saw our Daniel and put him in the neighbor's backyard. Only the people were on vacation for three weeks. Can you even imagine? Thank God Ahren heard Daniel barking, and Daniel heard Ahren on his bike! All's well that ends well.

My old golden was like that...you could watch her all day and she wouldn't leave the yard for one minute, turn your head and she was down the back yard into the creek...and then would follow that stupid creek for a couple of miles with me chasing her...sure glad we moved and put up a fence..no more creek for Maggie dog...

Oh, my gosh! That must have been so terrifying for you. I love my doggies, too, and that would be scary for me! One time, we were horseback riding, and our border collie was out with us. She went sniffing off some trail and strayed away from us. We kept riding and calling...my husband saying, "She'll come along, don't worry..." Well, we finally stopped when we realized she was not coming. We called and called, and we could hear her wimpering at the bottom of a ravine next to us. The trail she was on took her to the bottom of the ravine, and we were now at the top. The poor thing couldn't figure out how to get up by us. I was so scared she'd take off running and really get lost in the wilderness. My husband had to hike down and find her. Took him 45 minutes of hiking to get down there and back up. Scared the life out of me...all I could picture was the coyotes getting to her at night. She is such a good dog, and I was never so happy to see a dog as I was that day! So, I know how you were feeling. I am so glad it all turned out okay for you!

Glad you got her back, safe and sound. I have to share a dog story too. My daughter has a little morki, she lets him out in the mornings without a leash, but watches her from the door. Izzy, the dog, runs right to a fresh pile of poop some other dog planted in our yard, and rolls all around in it. My daughter was horrified, lol. She calls to Izzy, who knows she is in trouble - she opens the door..the dog runs straight to the bathroom and jumps in the tub, waiting for her bath. To beat it all - Izzy hates getting a bath and usually hides. Ah, a dog's life has it trials.

Anybody Know a Good Mad Scientist?

Clone2

At times like these I really wish I could clone myself so one of me could stay home and do what needs doing here and one of me could run errands that need running.

Come to think of it, at times like these, one clone wouldn't be enough. I'd need at least four, maybe more. And all of them would need to be very strong and have no debilitating diseases. I don't need a bunch of people who look like me milling around my house moaning and groaning and complaining. I want clones with no factory defects.

But, alas, our technology hasn't come that far yet. So for now there's just the one of me, and it doesn't work very well. Some of my parts are definitely the worse for the wear. So that's why things are taking so long, I guess.

Yesterday was a very productive day. Good neighbors and friends Gene and Paul came over and worked in the basement all afternoon. I can see progress, and they're coming back at a later date to help me finish up cleaning it out.

While Paul and Gene worked in the basement, I worked upstairs. I discovered that the liquid deglosser that I used on the desk before I painted it will take the paint of the porch. That and a little elbow grease. I got half of it cleaned before my elbow wore out. I'll finish it up today. Thanks to all of you for your suggestions. The most interesting suggestion I received came from Jean who mentioned peanut butter as a paint remover. She says her SIL swears by it. I just have to give that a try.

Not all of you were hot on the sink bird bath idea, but some of you liked it. I'll let you know later what I've decided. Thanks to all for your ideas and suggestions.

Sorry for the just-out-of-bed, before-my-shower clone photo. I was playing around with the PhotoBooth application and couldn't resist posting this one.

Your home will be ready for a magazine spread before too long! Things are looking lovely. I really like all the soft restful colors you are choosing.Take care of yourself, and like me, take those rest breaks. Too bad we aren't thirty ( forty? fifty?) now that we are retired and want to get so much done quickly. I hear you and had to laugh at the photo and your wish for more of you - only healthy! Remember in the movie Multiplicity, clone 0.4 was happy but rather limited in intelligence. I can still see him bicycling along sailing pizzas at homes as if they were newspapers!

My days are limited by lupus, fibro (tho not as bad as yours), and blasted fatigue. Bother and bummer to the max!!!! If you find a way to get worthy copies of yourself, please send me the instructions.

Cheers for Paul and Gene for helping you in the basement! Cheers for you for working from can to can't (my grandmother's words) upstairs. Your house will be back in order soon, and a lovely new site it will be. Why, I imagine you coming to a standstill to admire your newly decorated rooms every time you walk by a doorway!

Got Birds?

Birds1

What a fine day yesterday was. I went to early church service and Sunday school, came home and made a huge bowl of guacamole, went to our favorite thrift store with Andy and my sister Ramey, came home and grabbed the guacamole, and went to my Walk to Emmaus reunion group meeting. Someone had decided on a Mexican theme, and I can truly say I've never been to a Mexican restaurant that had better food than we had last night. But then the deliciousness of it all was eclipsed by my severe indigestion that I suffered for most of the rest of the night. I suspect the culprit was the onion in the guacamole.

StairwellOur thrift store trip was a lucrative one. Everyone found treasures. I had been playing with the idea of collecting bird prints to hang in the cavernous stairwell at The Yellow House (see photo at left). And it so happened that I found several very beautiful bird prints, including the one above and those below.

Birds 4

Birds 33

Birds 2

As you see, I haven't taken the price tags off any of them yet. I hate that job, don't you? Why do retailers find it necessary to stick those hateful things on the front of everything. They're so hard to removed. Let's start a movement--or maybe a Facebook group called "Let's See If We Can Find a Zillion People Who Hate Those Little Hard-to-Remove Stickers Stuck to the Fronts of Their Purchases."

I know I'll need many more bird prints to cover the walls going up those stairs. But it's a start, and I'll have fun collecting more.

I already have a collection of thrift-store prints of cottages that will hang in the dining room. I'll show those someday.

Paint on Porch Look what a mess I made on Saturday when I was painting my desk. I had covered the floor under the desk, but somehow I managed to make a mess anyway. I'm probably the messiest painter in the history of the world. I have to figure out how to remove that paint. I have great plans for my screened back porch, and none of them involve a splotchy floor.

All right, work awaits, so I better get to it. I hope everyone has a great Monday.

I'm so glad you had a good day yesterday! I hope you have good days all this coming week (and BEYOND!) I hope you know I now have to make some guacamole. Sigh. It's been whispering in my good ear ever since I read the last post. The BAD thing is, I can't afford to make much because I will EAT it. ALL of it. One of my real, true weaknesses, avacado. I tried making the 'healthier' Brocamoli. Uh ... nope! Not EVEN as good! Love the idea of bird prints for the stairwell walls! You found some really pretty ones! And, YES! I LOATHE stickers on the front of purchases! Hobby Lobby is notorious for doing that, & it annoys me to no end. I reserve my worst Comanche language for those times I'm fighting with a sticker. Grrrrr! Don't know how to get paint off a floor, but I DO know you can't be the worst painter because I definitely hold that title & have the paint splatters/spills to prove it. Sigh. NOT a title I'm thrilled to accept. LOVE YOU!

Get in line for that messiest painter title! I can make one brush stroke and have paint on my pants, hands, shirt and floor.
I love the sweet bird prints you found!

What lovely bird prints! They will certainly add charm along your stairs or on the wall at the top of the stairs. Now I want to find and frame the bird prints my mother collected and never framed, but where would I hang them?

When shall we see your cottage prints? Color me eager to see them.

I keep Tums for those after-food-I-cannot-live-without nights! Hope you're feeling lots better today.

Hugs!

Goo Gone is what you need to take those stickers off.

Have you ever considered (or maybe ever attended) the HWY 127 yard sale? I've always wanted to go, but something always got in the way ... like my job because I was always back in school when the yard sale was in progress. But now that I'm retired, maybe I can get to it one year ... hopefully!

There used to be a product called "OOPS" that would take paint off of floors, cabinets, etc. if it hadn't set there for a super long time. I don't know if it is available anymore. Might be worth a try though. Loved the bird prints.

On 05/24/2010, Sandy said ...

I take off those horrid stickers with "Goo Gone" I think it's made by 3M..The bottle I have is almost 30 years old, and there's still 1/2 a bottle left. It smells a little like gasoline with an oil base. My dad swore by the product and bought the bottle for me in 1975 - or there abouts.
I love your bird pics -- our thrift shops don't have the same kind of goodies all you bloggers seem to find at ya'lls local stores.
The Yellow House is looking good - you inspired me to make my dining room more floral and "girlie". But the living room is still "country" and that's okay until my daughter & SIL build their log cabin house - then she can have the oldies at her house.

On 05/24/2010, CarlaH said ...

I think that there is a long line of messy painters and I am definitely well to the front - I painted a bedroom once and had to hire a painter to redo it because I managed to get a lot of the coloured paint on the white ceiling (didn't know about painters tape then). Those prints are going to look so pretty lining that long stairwell. This will probably sound like a stupid question, but have you tried just scraping the white paint off the porch?

Hate those stickes! For the paint on the floor try using peanut butter to remove it. My sister-in-law swears by it.

On 05/25/2010, Suze said ...

peanut butter works on the stickers too..slop it on, let it sit for a while and rub off..after the sticky stuff is off, polish the glass with window cleaner..

I've Been Busy

Screen 3 Here I am! You probably thought I had forgotten about the GYHEM drawing for the cookbook. Well, I haven't. Just slow as usual.

I used the Random Number Generator this afternoon to choose a winner...and the winner is BARBARA ANN!

Congratulations, Barbara. I know I have your address someplace, but just in case I can't find it, please e-mail it to me at suscleve@aol.

I will get the two winners' packages in the mail this week. And keep watching. There could be more giveaways soon.

My big project this weekend has been this.

Desk

This is the sewing machine cabinet that held the first sewing machine I ever bought, a Singer with plastic parts. That was back in the late 60s; and although most of its workings were plastic that finally wore out, it did last about ten years and sewed many a seam. I used it to sew the blocks for my first quilt (which I should have hand sewn, but what did I know about quilting back then?), clothes for myself and my children, and even commissions for others for a short time in the 70s.

The sewing machine is long gone, but I never got rid of the cabinet. This weekend, I decided to paint it white. So after going over it with fine steel wool and liquid deglosser, I gave it three coats of antique white paint, and here's how it turned out.

Desk whtie

It was in the kitchen when I took this photo, but it won't stay there. I found it was in the way of the laundry closet door. So it will go in the hall right outside my bedroom. It's going to be a place to hold incoming bills and mail that needs to be answered. For years, all the mail has been tossed onto the kitchen table, and the table was always a mess--mainly because Vann didn't want his junk mail thrown away until he had looked at it, which he was always hesitant to do. Now I take the junk mail out of the mailbox and go straight to the garbage can with it. Junk mail doesn't come into my house now (unless it's a quilt catalog or Papa John's coupon, of course.)

I don't think the rooster lamp will remain there. I'd rather have it in the kitchen. But right now, I don't know where in the kitchen it will be. The red bowl has to find a new home too.

I got an e-mail last week telling me that my dining room furniture is on back order and won't ship until June 11. I should think they could have told me that sooner, but that's ok. I still have to have the carpets cleaned, a task that will be easier the less furniture I have in place.

Andy took a small table and a quilt rack home with her just now, and she's going to take the recliner when the new couch comes. It's supposed to ship on May 30. I'm just beginning to really realized how very too much furniture and things I had in this house. I know I'm going to love a less crowded home.

I have to go now and make guacamole for 20 people. Our Walk to Emmaus Reunion Group meeting tonight has a Mexican theme. Everybody's bringing Mexican food, and I promised to make guacamole. Bye for now.

NOTE: The hand-painted screen in the top photo has been standing where my newly painted desk will be now. I think the screen is going into the dining room, along with the hutch, table, and chairs. That's all.

Hi Susan, that sewing machine cabinet/desk turned out very well and I'm so glad that the recliner found a new home. Isn't it strange how we spend so many years accumulating possessions just to find them a burden later on.

Love the sewing table and it's new look. I'm so glad you have a place for it where it will continue to be useful to you. I'm glad Andy has a use for the recliner and table.

You would think that vendors would let you know at time of order that there would be a delivery delay due to back-order. Good for you for taking the high road and making the best of the situation. I'm glad you couch will soon make an appearance! How exciting!

Hugs!

That's the prettiest screen EVER! And the sewing cabinet? What a gorgeous change to it! Good idea re: using it for mail! I LOVE the red spatterware bowl! I collect spatterware and was drooling when I saw the big red bowl! (90% OF MINE is blue.) You will find the perfect spot for it, I know! Maybe the room (is it the guest room?) with some red in it? It would make a lovely bowl for flowers or fruit or small welcoming items for a guest! OR for ALL THAT YUMMY GUACAMOLE! I could happily dive into a pool of that and eat my way through it. Trust me, my thighs & backside would, if cut, BLEED guacamole! LOL! Ooops! Got off track as usual! Your house is looking awesome, and your new livingroom furniture will, I KNOW, be worth the wait! LOVE YOU!

FRIDAY???

Little chair Already? I promised Daniel I'd go and get the lining for my valence this week. I promised myself that my kitchen would be organized this week. But who knew this week would be over so soon?

I have this small wing back chair that I want Daniel to make a slipcover for so I can use it in the living room in place of the hulking leather recliner. That recliner just doesn't seem to fit the theme I'm going for--do you think?

Recliner That was Vann's chair, and he loved it, and I love him. But I don't think it would be disrespectful to get that thing out of my nice cottage living room, do you?

There's something else of Vann's that I do want to use in my makeover--this time in my yard makeover. It's this old pedestal sink. Vann brought this to our marriage. It has always sat in the basement among many of his other lifetime collections. He had an old barber chair, which I gave to Phillip. Couldn't see that in my life.

So what I want to do with this sink is make a bird bath out of it. But I need to know if that's too off the wall. So tell me, is a birdbath made from a sink whimsical or tacky? To help you imagine this, I've found a couple of photos on the internet of this concept.

So what do you think? Is my idea hot or cold? Would this be comparable to a toilet overflowing with petunias? Or is it just the thing for a cottage garden?

I think it's a great idea. Just be sure to put rocks in the bottom so the birds won't drown. Ask me how I know this!! I had a birdbath that was too deep and lost several birds before I figured out what the problem was. That birdbath is now a planter filled with dirt instead of water. Poor things. I just didn't know.

On 05/21/2010, Barbara Anne said ...

Good morning!

I suggest that you try the chair as is with the new furniture in your cottage living room before you spring for a slipcover. It may already be the right print to look wonderful or you may decide that you want the slipcover to be something other than white when you see the room all together. Vann won't mind that his recliner moves elsewhere or even out of the house.

The sink in the yard idea is stellar! I like that the online pictures show each sink in a setting and not just standing alone in the middle of the yard. I vote birdbath, but get one of those little submersible gizmos that keeps the water moving gently. You don't want a mosquito breeding pond and that's what happens in still water. As Sandy said, put rocks in the bottom so the water isn't too deep.

The sink that's a planter seems to be barfing green icky stuff! :D

Sinks are a far cry better than the toilet in the yard and Vann's sink is lovely.

Hugs!

I think the birdbath idea could be really cute if executed well (like the ideas you've shown). Fun. I like it when people take the knobs from the sink (like yours) and mount them on a board and hang it in the bathroom for a robe/towel hook. That would be really cute, too. Have fun with it!

On 05/21/2010, Helen in Switzerland said ...

Oh Susan, you are funny! The sink idea is great, but it would be even better with the toilet full of petunias nearby - that would just make EVERYBODY smile :)!!
The recliner needs to go - you're right - it just isn't your style. I'm sure Vann would understand - he probably wouldn't want his recliner in your girly house!
I gather you are feeling more yourself today!
have a nice weekend!
Lol Helen

I love the birdbath idea. I think it will be adorable, and the birdies need a cute place to take a bath!

On 05/21/2010, CarlaH said ...

What is it with men and recliners - I am sure that Vann would not mind in the least if you moved it out of your new "girlie" room.
As far as as the sink goes - definitely put it in the garden - I would use it as a planter rather than as a bird bath.

Sink in the yard? I'm thinkin' "You may be a Redneck!" :-)

On 05/21/2010, Melinda said ...

I like the idea of a sink as either a planter or bird bath. Of course this is coming from someone who has a bottle tree in my yard.

I am sure Vann would not object to you getting rid of his chair. He got his pleasure from it.

On 05/21/2010, Teresa said ...

Hmmm.. I am cold on the idea of the sink, but you could always set it out there without doing too much too it for a few days and see how you liked it.

Love the bedroom and your chair. I don't think Vann would mind in the least your parting with it. Would any of the kids want it, you think?

On 05/21/2010, Kim said ...

I LOVE the idea of the sink as a birdbath!

On 05/21/2010, Alison said ...

These are some interesting ideas Susan, I like the shape of your sink as a birdbath, but I don't like the pictures of the ones on the internet, it might be the taps I don't like. So I would try the sink outside, without taps, but also with plenty of plants around it so it's not too obviously a sink. Am I too conservative? :o).

How big is your living room? Does Vann's chair dominate it too much? I agree it needs softening down with a couple of quilts, but I'm not sure I'd rush to move it out completely. Try it in another room if you have space. Unless, of course, it's something you've always hated and had on your hit list from day one, in which case it's gotta go LOL!

On 05/21/2010, Joanne said ...

That's a beautiful sink. Vann knew a good thing when he saw one--you're a good example! I think it needs a little fountain, just to trickle down and keep the water moving. If you planted a little circle of ground-cover flowers around it, it would be pretty standing out by itself instead of against a wall or hedge.

On 05/21/2010, KAI said ...

What Barbara said! (Who ARE you, Barbara? I keep thinking, "She writes almost exactly what I would write!" LOL!) Susan, I can't recall WHERE I saw them about a year ago - some garden magazine, I KNOW - but they used sinks as bird baths & definitely had moving water! They were beautiful! And Vann's sink is so pretty! He'd be pleased that you found a good use for it! (Question: Is sweet lil' Miss Sophie still pouting over - uh mourning - the loss of her sofa?)

Progress Report & GYHEM Giveaway #2

Bedroom

As evidence that progress is being made around here, I give you this. My bed, all made up with it's new buttercup yellow bedspread, flanked by two (although you can see only one of them) organized bookcases. (Well, there's a mystery solved. I thought I had lost the lens cover for my camera, but I see it now, lying right there on the lone star quilt on my bed. See it?)

In fact, quite a bunch got done in The Yellow House yesterday, but I didn't do most of it. The charity truck came and picked up another load of donations, the boys who helped with the painting came and carried my old sofas away to their house, a nice young couple came from Huntsville and bought the dining table and chairs and nearly killed themselves getting the table out of the house. And, best of all, Daisy, my god-dog, came to stay for a few day.

The lack of lifting and toting seems to have had good results. I feel better today. The back is still fussing, but the allover pain of the fibromyalgia has abated. So I think I will try to get my kitchen straightened up a bit. It's a total wreck. Even worse than the near-empty rooms in the photos below.

Living Room

Dining room

Sophie is quite put out with me for letting her sofa, the back of which was her favorite napping spot, leave the house. Even though I put down lots of cushions and her favorite quilts right in front of the window where her sofa sat, she won't even try them out. She prefers the bare carpet.

How would you like to own this great cookbook? Of all the cookbooks I had in my kitchen (until the charity truck hauled most of them away yesterday), this is the one I use most. (Not this very one, but one like it.) This one is brand new, never been cooked from.

For our gift to her we filled a large bag with books (she is an unrecovering bookaholic:-) that reflected who she is (bird watching, travel, Irish trivia etc) and we looked and looked for a Southern Living Cookbook (not so available in CA bookstores near us)since she had lived in the south for a number of years and proclaims her style of decor and cooking to be "Southern Living"....
So much fun to "see" your home taking shape with its new look....your decorating sense is really blossoming...

Love Southern Living recipes! You are a better woman than me-the thought of cleaning out my sewing room gives me nightmares. Take it easy so you will continue to feel better.

Hi Susan,
well I have to say, it's looking sooo good! Yes there are a few things to be tidied away, but those rooms look so fresh and pretty! I'm sure you are nearly there. Once your new furniture arrives it will look lovely!
I'd love to win the cookbook - cookbooks are my third weakness - after fabric and sock yarn! My husband has banned me from buying any more (don't know why - I mean he benefits from my use of them!). I hardly know anything about Southern food - and I'd love to learn - so please put me into the draw!!
Hope you are feeling a bit more like yourself again,
best wishes,
Helen

Seeeeeee????? REALLY GREAT PROGRESS! Even tho' you have more to do, you are getting into the rhythm of the makeover & pacing your sweet self better now, I think! THAT'S GOOD! I'm loving the wall colors. And Miss Sophie makes me laugh because I relate to wanting 'my' plopping-down spots to remain where they always were. (She's so adorable!)
