I didn't have anything to blog about this morning, so I went to Facebook to read some posts--and I found my blog topic. Thanks to a quote that Molly posted, I learned that the word "silly" derives from the German word selig, meaning "blessed" or "happy."
Further research on this word found an early writer who called the Baby Jesus "a harmless, silly babe," meaning he was blessed and innocent. Innocence apparently evolved into meaning naive or gullible and then on to how we think of "silly" today as foolish, even irritating.
I'm taking this wonderful word back to its original meaning. This year, I plan to be as silly as possible, soak up the silliness, pray for silliness even--just get silly with silliness. 2009, although a year of grief and heartaches, was also a year of silliness. There was never a time when I didn't feel "blessed" by friends and family who took time to pray for me and Vann, send us cards and gifts, call us on the phone, love us.
I also plan to promote the idea of being silly by instigating "Silly Saturday," here at Blackberry Creek. I will invite my readers to take part with me in being just as silly as we possibly can be and posting photos of some of this silliness--photos of self, family, pets, projects, just anything and everything you find to be silly about.
I haven't thought this plan all the way through yet, so give me a week or so to get it off the ground, then we'll all get silly together every Saturday. Won't it be fun?

Perfect! My sister and I call our Saturdays "marbles" after the idea of putting a marble in a jar for all the Saturdays you have, having creative, fun, memorable things to "marble" about!
