Makes One Wonder About Alice's Rabbit Hole

A Teapot My sister and I decided to visit our favorite thrift store Sunday afternoon, and look what I got: this wonderful teapot. I have oodles of tea pots. I just love them.

What about that Big Bang Machine that they turned on in Switzerland today? That kind of stuff just fascinates the dickens out of me. I don't understand it, of course, but I'm still fascinated. Here's how I understand what happened: The scientists shot something they couldn't see in one direction through the collider and something else they couldn't see in the other direction (little tiny particals of something). These tiny little things they couldn't see were supposedly traveling at nearly the speed of light when they met somewhere under Geneva and crashed into each other, setting off a mini-Big Bang. I think that's great.

A lot of people are worried about all this. They fear that the scientists will eventually create a tiny little black hole with all the slamming of particles together and that this teeny black hole will suck the earth and everything on it into oblivion. I don't worry much about the black hole theory. But I do wonder why they want to set off a Big Bang. Isn't that what created our universe (with a little help from God)? What do they think they're going to do with another universe? We can't even take care of this one properly.

Well, anyway, I didn't create any universes or black holes this week, but I have made a bunch of ATCs (artist trading cards). Here's a look.

That's not all. I'll show you more tomorrow.

Go HERE to read about Blackberry Creek's fun Halloween swap, if you don't already know about it. Everyone is welcome to join, whether or not you're a blogger. But read the description first, then e-mail me if you're interested. Have a great Wednesday afernoon.

Thank you for the Little Bag explanation, I missed it yesterday and had only heard snippets. I cant hep but ask though, Why bother doing that?...surely there are much more useful things scientists could be working on.???
I love your teapot and your artist trading cards are very sweet!! Cathyx

Your tea pot is beautiful. And haven't you been busy making those adorable cards. I need to have a hobby besides blogging. smile. I also loved your explanation about the universe and the BANG. Big or little. Smile. Love your post.

Hugs, Jeanne

Have to agree with Cathy, aren't there more important things those scientists can work on? LOL If you've done a google search today you've seen the reference to the "big bang" Your ATCs are just wonderful!

This first test didn't actually collide the particles. The particles were fired through the tubes in only one direction. The collision, whatever the results may be, will come later. Here's a snippet of the report.
Ramey

Eventually two beams will be fired at the same time in opposite directions with the aim of recreating conditions a split second after the big bang, which scientists theorize was the massive explosion that created the universe.

"My first thought was relief," said Evans, who has been working on the project since its inception in 1984. "This is a machine of enormous complexity. Things can go wrong at any time. But this morning has been a great start."
He didn't want to set a date, but said that he expected scientists would be able to conduct collisions for their experiments "within a few months."

Scientists hope to eventually send two beams of protons through two tubes about the width of fire hoses, speeding through a vacuum that is colder and emptier than outer space. The paths of these beams will cross, and a few protons will collide. The collider's two largest detectors — essentially huge digital cameras weighing thousands of tons — are capable of taking millions of snapshots a second.

The CERN experiments could reveal more about "dark matter," antimatter and possibly hidden dimensions of space and time. It could also find evidence of the hypothetical particle — the Higgs boson — which is sometimes called the "God particle" because it is believed to give mass to all other particles, and thus to matter that makes up the universe.

The supercooled magnets that guide the proton beam heated slightly in the morning's first test, leading to a pause to recool them before trying the opposite direction.

The start of the collider came over the objections of some who feared the collision of protons could eventually imperil the Earth by creating micro-black holes, subatomic versions of collapsed stars whose gravity is so strong they can suck in planets and other stars.

Cute teapot. My mom also has a collection of these and the granddaughters have started putting their names on the bottoms of the ones they are claiming, LOL. I like your trading cards too, so who do you trade with?
