Signs of Spring

DogwoodIt's a blooming world around here these days. Which is no help at all for my allergies--but it is beautiful. Makes one thankful to be living in God's world.

Sophie and Vann have been across the street helping Big Paulie in his garden all morning. Vann finally brought Sophie home. She got up on the back of the couch for a nap--muddy paws and all.

I decided that instead of taking my doctor's advice about going to the other doctor and taking more drugs, I was going to begin my daily walking again. I started this morning. Did pretty good. My back and hips were hurting really bad when I got home, but I do believe that I feel generally better.

My azaleas have passed their peak, but they're still pretty.

Copperhead I get the willies just showing you this. And after that bug yesterday, some of you might decide to not read my blog any more. Please don't. I promise, no more creepy crawlies for a while, but I just had to show you this. Anybody know what it is? Yes, it's a snake, but what kind? A copperhead--a dad-gum copperhead in my own front yard.

I let Sophie out yesterday afternoon, and of course she was already barking up a tree at a squirrel before I even got down the front steps. I followed her on out and this is what I almost stepped on. Sophie had just gone right past the spot where Mr. Copperhead was sunning his venomous self.

Now we don't kill snakes just because they're snakes, but these fellows can be deadly, at least for small dogs they can be. And they can make humans really sick. Expert herpatologist that I am NOT, I immediately ran back in the house and called my husband. "What is that?" I asked when he came to see. "Is that a good snake or a bad snake?"  Vann identified him as a copperhead

I won't describe the rest of the scene, in case some of you are squeemish. I myself had to turn away before Vann dispatched this unwelcome visitor.

Bye now. And watch where you step.

I'm glad the walk helped, and it had to have been nice to have all the beautiful blooms to enjoy.

I agree that a good decision was made concerning the plight of the copperhead.

Aren't dogwood blooms gorgeous?

That snake picture makes me glad I live here. I love snakes, I really do but don't think I'd manage well with one in my yard.
The flower ones on the other hand leave me longing for a much warmer place.
Hope you can keep up with that walking, it can make all the difference sometimes.

Ack! SNAKE!!! I have a phobia about them. My sons used to hide their rubber snakes in my bed on April fool's day. They would also rig one up to fall on me when I opened a door. They loved freaking MOM out. I cross my fingers that I don't run across any of those critters here in Tennessee ... especially copperheads. I understand they are aggressive in mating season (now) and will actually chase and jump at you. Now I've go the willies.

Ooh, Susan! I LOVED all your signs of spring except that last one! I'm not a fan of any kind of snake. We had three last year, and they just about did me in! So glad Sophie is safe!

Hard to believe your azaleas are almost past peak--ours haven't opened yet. Your dogwood is beautiful; I'm looking forward to seeing mine open this year (just planted a new one last fall).

When we visited you neck of the woods last year, I would keep my eyes open for snakes. We only saw a couple (in Arkansas), but they weren't dangerous. Your flowers are beautiful. We've had cold temps and we're still waiting for our apple tree to blossom so it's fun to enjoy your blossoms.

Love all the "pretty in pink" flowers -- Thank You! for sharing, as here in Illinois we are still in the between mode of Spring- springing up!Nothing blooming here YET!
About the snake-- I wanted to share that as kids we had a garter snake near our swing set and my mother literally "Hoe'ed" it to pieces. She had the Hoe working in the garden and just started hoeing it -- Talk about a comical site -- seeing your mother dancing around with a hoe. We did not know what kind and as Mom put it she was not taking any chances where snakes are concerned!
Happy Spring! Karyl

I like snakes! They don't skeeve me out at all. I even had a fellow named "Reptile Rob" do a birthday party for one of my sons many years ago. Among his 'zoo' of animals, he had a 13-foot-long Burmese Python! She was so beautiful. He raised her from her egg. I wasn't too keen on his pet cobra--nasty! Or his scorpion. Do you know, they glow under blacklight? Next to the python, my favorite animal (obviously not a reptile) was his armadillo!

Gasp. My knees are weak and my skin all goose bumpy from seeing that snake photo. Good golly, I would have had to move out of my house if I saw one of those in the yard. Thank goodness it didn't hurt you, Vann, or Miss Sophie.
Your blooms are lovely, especially the dogwood!

What gorgeous, colorful blooms. I'm in IL and it's just wet & still on the cool side here. I'm so ready for some warmer, drier weather. Not so fond of that snake pic though. LOL
