Helen & Annie

Helen_and_annieYou may well have already seen this, but it's such a wonderful photo of Helen Keller and Annie Sullivan that I wanted to post it here. I think it's the most lovely photo I've ever seen of either one of them, and especially of the two together. It looks almost like a still from a movie or a Broadway play, not like a real-life photo at all. But it is. Somebody found it in the effects of a friend of Helen's after his death.

Everyone always makes such a thing over Helen--and certainly I do admire her for the accomplishments she made in her life. Who would not? She was an amazing woman, an inspiration not just to handicapped people, not just to women, but to everyone everywhere.

But I've always felt that Annie Sullivan was the one who really deserved the accolades. What dedication, confidence, determination, self-assuredness, downright Irish stubborness. Can you imagine a harder job than the one she had as Helen's teacher and caregiver? Have you ever thought what would have happened to Helen had not Annie come along when she did?

They were both great women. Together they were a great team.

Cuupcakes_more Everyone everywhere seems to have been hit by this craze to write a biography or state your philosophy using only six words. Well here's mine:
LIFE IS SHORT; EAT DESSERT FIRST.

I didn't invent it, but I like it.

I love that you acknowledged Annie. I'm all for paying attention to those who aren't in the spotlight, but make such a difference.
Oh, and I'm all for dessert too!

Oh, yes, Susan....there is NO doubt that GOD sent Anne along for Helen. Don't you adore learning and watching how GOD works? So amazing to see HIS work in action.
So glad you played the 6 word Memoir....
hugs, bj

I agree about Annie. She was the brilliant one who even got through to Helen. Yes, Helen was brilliant too, but Come on. She would have never had been able to live the remarakable life she lived if it hadn't been for Annie.
I agree with eating dessert first too.
I love dessert. xoxo nita
