What a Book!

I usually consign my book reviews to the sidebar at the left of the screen. But every once in a while a book is so good, I like to give it extra attention. That's true of the book I have just finished, "My Best Friend's Exorcism." In fact, I'm still dabbing my eyes with a tissue as a result of the the ending. Not sad; just emotional.

In my opinion, Grady Hendrix is one of the best writers currently writing fiction. This is the second of his books I have read, and I have the rest that I haven't read on hold at the library. It seems a lot of readers like his fiction.

But even though I will tell you that this is one of the best books I've read lately, I have to add a disclaimer. I know some of you don't like scary books and movies. And this book certainly has some scary stuff. Not quite a scary as "The Exorcist" maybe, but pretty hair raising.

I didn't know until just now when I was googling that "My Best Friend's Exorcism" has been made into a movie, available on Amazon Prime. I guess you can guess what I'll be doing this afternoon.

Even though I judge this an outstanding work, as I said in the short review in the "Books Read in 2023" list at left, I'll never forgive its author for what happened to GDM. For fear of venturing into spoiler territory, that's all I'll say about that.

Interesting, but no, thank you! Decades ago when book clubs by mail were the thing, I didn't return the post card in time, so received "The Exorcist", to my dismay. I read it cover to cover in one day, finishing it at 3am with DH keeping me company (also not allowed to go to bed!) and every light in the house on. I kid you not.
Needless to say, I sat thought the movie without a qualm as it was noting compared with my imagination as I read the book.

To celebrate getting the border sewn on to my millefiori quilt, I decided to read a book--all the way through without stopping to sew anything. And I picked just the right one: Dear Edward by Ann Napolitano. If I had wanted to put it aside to sew, I don’t think I could have. This is the best book I’ve read for at least a year. It’s one of those stories that almost reads itself. You don’t feel like you reading but just enjoying an enthralling story. The pages fly by, and you’ve finished the book way before you’re ready to leave those wonderful but broken characters. The main character, Eddie (Edward) Adler, at the age of 12, survives an airliner crash. The crash claims 191 lives, including his parents and older brother. For the next six years, Edward struggles to carve out a place for himself in a world without his family. The story is heartbreaking and at the same time uplifting.  If you’re looking for a good book to read to usher in Autumn, I recommend this one highly...

Catching Up

This is my new granddog Ozzy. Daughter Andy recently adopted him. He initially showed up at Jesse's girlfriend's house, and after trying unsuccessfully to find his owner, she made him at home. But having one dog, two children, three cats, and a full-time job already, Ozzy (his name was Chip at the time) became too much for her. So Andy took him in. At first she was sure she had made a mistake. Not having ever owned a dog that she was responsible for (we had dogs from time to time when she was a child), she was sure she had bitten off more than she could chew. But things are settled down, and Andy and Ozzy have bonded. They visit me frequently, usually on Saturday to watch the Bama game--or in the case of last Saturday, to watch movies as there was no Bama game.
