No Game on Game Day

Chilimac

Chili mac has become our traditional game day meal here at the Yellow House. There was no game today (a by day for Bama), but we didn't see any need of forgoing one of our favorite dishes. So I made chili mac for lunch. Jesse loves it, and so do I.

Today I'm watching old movies, "Dial M for Murder" right now. "Cujo" is on another station. I usually like Stephen King movies, but I can't bear "Cujo." That poor doggie didn't ask to be bitten by that rabid badger. I don't like movies, even Stephen King movies, where a dog suffers and/or dies.. So I won't watch "Cujo" ever again.

So we have to wait a whole 'nother week to watch Crimson Tide football but not for some chili mac and good movies.

The Day Jerry Lee Died

And another chunk of my youth is gone. Jerry Lee Lewis died today at the age of 87. I know the man had faults (and seven wives). He was certainly no saint. In fact, he once said, "If I'm going to hell, I'm going playing the piano."

Well I hope Jerry Lee isn't in hell. I hope he's sitting at that great piano in the sky and all the angels, and maybe even St. Peter and Jesus, are jumping and jiving. I sure jumped to a lot of his music--back in the day when I could jump. Rest In Peace, Jerry Lee.

Binder

Here's how far I've made it with my quilt album, which will hold photos and stories of all the quilts I've made throughout my life. The patchwork piece is from some English paper piecing that I started a few years ago and never finished. It will be the front cover of the binder. And I got some of the rows of Karen's Log Cabin quilt joined today. Only two (or is it three) more long seams to go.

Season-1

Now that I finished the 42-episode series "The Following," I've started a series that Sister Ramey recommended, "Night Sky," and wow! is it ever good! I got through three episodes last night. Starring two of my favorite actors, J.K. Simmons and Sissy Spacek, it's the story of an elderly couple who have lived most of their married lives with a big secret in their shed. It's a wonderful story, and Spacek and Simmons have never been better. (Except maybe Sissy was more awesome in "Coal Miner's Daughter." I can't think of a role that has ever been better played than that one.)

So now I'm going to settle back on the couch with Tomcat Taco and watch some more of this great series.

Back to the Sewing Room

LC

I got back to work on Karen's quilt today. I have all the blocks sewn into rows, but only a couple of the rows joined. As soon as the rest of the rows are joined the top will be finished. I'm going to piece a backing, but I haven't decided on the the fabric for it yet. I can't decide whether to go lighter or darker for the backing. Probably lighter.

During my time of non-sewing, I've been watching "The Following," a series from a few years ago starring Kevin Bacon as a troubled FBI agent chasing a very scary serial killer. I finished it last night 42 episodes. Except for the exceedingly (and ridiculously) large number of dead bodies, the series was pretty good. Another problem with the series, imo, was the fact that every five minutes or so someone would ask someone else, "Are you OK?" But anything with Kevin Bacon, gotta be good. It's on Amazon Prime, but you have to rent it. It's also on CW for free, but you have to watch commercials.

Why I Haven't Blogged

GettyImages-508511785

Mainly because I just haven't been doing anything to blog about. The weather has been changing here, which is what it should be doing. The leaves and turning and falling, the days are cool, and the nights are chilly. I love it. This is my favorite time of year. But unfortunately, weather affects my chronic pain conditions a lot. I have had some pretty tough days and nights recently and have spent a lot of time lying on the couch.

I took advantage of feeling a bit better yesterday, and my sister Ramey and I went thrift store shopping. I didn't find any real treasures, just a couple of tops that I liked. But I enjoyed the time spent with Ramey, and I was not completely zonked when I got home.

Last night the pain was again showing out, and I didn't get much sleep. So I'm pretty tired today. I don't even remember the last time I was in the sewing room.

I haven't even felt much like cooking so Jesse and I have eaten a lot of take-out. I just slid a Stouffer's Lasagna into the oven for a late lunch. I can at least pretend that I'm cooking, although all I had to do was take it out of the box and put it in the over, and turn the oven on. I think Stouffer's lasagna is good, although mine is better. But to make mine requires a lot more time on my feet than I feel like spending today.

Oh, sweet friend, I am so very sorry you've been so miserable lately.
Do you by any chance have a bed warming mattress pad on your bed? It goes under the bottom sheet and has heat settings you can choose for how much warmth you want. We've found it really helps aching backs and joints so hope you'll get one if you don't have one yet. Better than an electric blanket, too, if you have pets that sleep with you.
Fret not about not cooking. You or Jesse can put stuff in the Crock Pot and nearly presto there is yummy food to enjoy. In the meantime, your house smells great.

Hugs!

Rest With the Angels, Loretta

AP8005021202-1056x704Loretta Lynn, Mommy Clary Webster, and Sister Crystal Gayle

As. you might already know, Loretta Lynn passed away this week. My heart took a hit when I read the news. Loretta is on the list of women I admire most. The world will miss her. Coincidentally, I had just watched "Coalminer's Daughter" for about the 25th time the night before she died.

I have long thought of Loretta as my cousin, though I have no evidence, except her mommy's name, that the connection is there. Clara (Clary) Webb (nee Ramey) was born in the same area of the country that my Ramey clan came from--the eastern Kentucky/West Virginia area. Of course it was many years ago that my ancestor migrated from that area down to north central Alabama, more than 100 years. But I feel there has to be a kinship of some sort there.

The other connection I have with Loretta is that when I worked for Progressive Farmer magazine back in the 80s, the editorial staff held our annual meeting in Nashville. As a side trip, we travelled to nearby Hurricane Mills to visit Loretta and Doolittle Lynn's ranch. Loretta was on tour, we were sorry to learn. So we didn't get to meet her. Doo was there, though. And he took me for a ride around the ranch in the Jeep that Tommy Lee Jones (as Doo) drove in the movie. I'll never forget that experience. I wish I had a photo, but for some reason nobody thought to take one.

Loretta Lynn's death was sad news, indeed. I never felt the kinship to her that did or had the amazing experience of meeting Doo and riding in that memorable jeep.

Those older folks we've admired all of our lives are now leaving us all too soon. In many cases we are left with their wonderful books, movies, or music so we are not completely bereft.

Hugs!

Having never met you in person, I immediately saw a resemblance to your photo and Clary's image, above. Even if you are distantly related, you are related in your heart.

October Bee

My quilt bee met Monday at Sally B's house. And, as they say, a good time was had by all. But then, we always have a good time when we get together. Below are a few photos from the meeting.

Bee1edit - 1Doris made this beauty.

Bee1Doris made this pretty quilt from men's shirts that
a friend gave her.

Bee4This was an antique hand-pieced quilt top that a friend asked Doris to quilt. She did a great job.

Nancy - 1Nancy's getting ready for Christmas.

Beeedit - 1Cyndi and Doris show one of Sally's quilts. This one is a disappearing nine-patch pattern.

Bee4bAnother Doris pretty.

I learned of a great online quilt shop while at bee: Jordan Fabrics. You can find them at https://jordanfabrics.com
They have some great fabrics and patterns that I haven't seen elsewhere. Lots of free patterns too.
