Like a Dolphin

Dolphin Head

Every wonder why dolphins smile all the time? Being in the water is wonderful.

The aquatic therapy this morning was absolutely great. In the pool of heated water, I can move and do things that I haven't been able to do for such a long time. I wonder if I could go and live with the dolphins. I am a pisces, you know.

Dotti the therapist put me through about 45 minutes of exercises, and when we were done, I didn't want to go. I was feeling so good.

But I got out of the pool, dried off, and got dressed. Then I stopped by the grocery store for a few necessary items. By the time I got home, I was beginning to drag a little. I ate lunch and that's when the tiredness really struck. I was exhausted. But it was simple physical exhaustion--not the horrible sluggish kind that comes with fibro. I rested and watched the war news for a while and snapped back.

But I bet I sleep well tonight--if I don't stay awake worrying about our next impending war. I hate war. I'm sorry.  There are no good wars.

So glad the water therapy is working for you. I went cold turkey with television. I haven't watched any for months now and it's amazing how much I don't miss it. Get my news in snippets on the internet. Hope you have a great weekend Susan.

Didn't I tell you?! That aquatic therapy is the best, I miss it so much. (I had to move.)

Cheers that the water therapy is doing you a world of good!!! Perhaps a hot soak in the bathtub before bedtime would feel good, too?

I'm playing ostrich and not watching the news, just praying for a peaceful solution to this horrid situation and an end to cruel tyrants. Not too much to pray and hope for!

Today's schedule for me is making bindings x 5 and an LSU pre-season game tonight.

Hugs!

Susan, so glad to hear that the water therapy helped! Moving/exercise seems to be the best "cure" for my arthritis but that means moving when one's joints don't want to cooperate. I always feel better after exercised. Yoga has been a good option for me as well as aqua exercise classes at the Y. Hope the water therapy continues to help.

I live in CA so the autumn I experience is a bit more muted than what you see in the southeast. But I have noticed that trees are starting to change color already. Days are a bit shorter and nights a bit cooler. I say that and then we will have an Indian Summer and it will be late October before the day time temperatures drop below 90.

Enjoy the autumn & the water therapy. When do you go again?

Take care.

Number 82

Securedownload

As you can see, I got another Granny block finished. Thirty-eight to go.

I guess the furbies have decided I'm not in distress or wanting to play when I lie on the floor to do my stretches. They didn't bother me this morning. I have already noticed that stairs are easier than they were before I started the stretches. Either it's my imagination, or they're helping.

I have my first water therapy session tomorrow. I'm looking forward to everything except appearing in public in a swim suit. I'm really not liking that idea. I'm allowed to go in the pool in shorts and a t-shirt, but I don't know how well that would work.  Wet shorts and wet t-shirt sound about as great as me in a swimsuit.

Have to have the doggies at the vet at 3:00 p.m. for their annual checkups and shots. I haven't told Sophie yet. She gets so stressed when she knows we're going to the vet. Skipper doesn't care, just so I'm with him.

I am fairly comfortable with the appearance of my new (one-piece)bathing suit on top, but I do wear it with nylon running shorts to feel more comfortable with my more mature bathing suit shape. These cover a little more skin and dry off quickly. I'm glad you are finding some way to move around quickly and decrease discomfort. Keep up the fight.

I have been doing physical therapy for my knees and the exercises have helped a great deal!! I think doing the swimming will help out a great deal.. Keep up the good work!! You will for sure feel alot better!!!

I learned the stretches I need to do in physical therapy and now, months later, I am still doing them because they have changed my life. Before, I could barely make it through the grocery store before my left leg went numb. Now I can walk and shop so much longer. Keep up your stretching. It is not your imagination. Fortunately, I can do mine on the bed. I don't care much for getting down/up from the floor!

glad to hear the stretches are helping. It sounds too easy to really help, but sometimes that's how it is. Hope you continue to do well and that the water therapy helps too.

I hear you on the quandry about what to wear to water therapy. I know there are one piece suits with little skirts so wish you well in figuring this one out.

I also can't imagine wearing a swimsuit. I got some shorts and a tank top that wick off water at a sporting goods store. The selection is better in the men's section. I wear a sports bra under the tank top. This combination works pretty good. Glad to hear that you are feeling better.

Porch Time

Photo

Somehow it was much easier to do my stretching exercises yesterday at St. Vincent's 119 than it was in my bedroom floor this morning. Taco was nosing my feet, Skipper was licking my face, and Sophie was pawing me on the shoulder to get my attention. Bella had left the area.

But I have to say I do feel better today. I don't know if a couple of sessions of stretching is responsible or if it's just one of those rare days when I feel better, but THANK GOD!

This morning, I sat on the back porch with my coffee while the dogs roamed the back yard and the cats peered through the screen and climbed on the furniture. The temperature was great--a nice cool morning carrying the promise of autumn. I love it.

Today is laundry day as well as guild newsletter deadline. Got to get busy on my article now.

Cheers that you feel better today no matter what the reason! I do hope the PT exercises will bring about more and more good days for you. Perhaps you should put the critters on the porch before you do your exercises so you'll be less bothered by the little faces and feet of those concerned about you!

Your basket of pinecones reminds me of a funny family story. My parents had a coal scuttle filled with pinecones in their den by the fireplace. My mother once asked my father to wash the dust off of the pinecones so he took them outside in the sunshine to spray each with the hose. Before putting the pinecones back into the scuttle, he let them dry a bit. To his surprise, the coal scuttle was just over half full when he refilled it with all of the pinecones. Later than evening, my parents kept hearing odd popping sounds they traced to the coal scuttle and the next morning the coal scuttle was full again. When wet, the pinecones had shrunk and they filled out again when dry!!

Hugs!

Granny Square Block #81 of 120

Finally got some sewing done this morning. I spent yesterday working on a guild project that, as it turned out, didn't need my help. But I'm all set for next year.

Must rush. I have my first physical therapy visit at 1:00, and I have to shower and get ready. I'm taking my swim suit, just in case I can talk the therapist into water therapy.

Toca on Hot Pad
Taco decided to grab some heating pad time while I wasn't occupying it.

Hope you feel better after PT and join in your hope that water therapy is included.

Taco does have the right idea! Our cats love old flanned shirts.

Home Is Where the Sewing Room Is

HSH

Andy and I had a great beach vacation, with only a couple of glitches: lots of rain and having the beach cops take our new beach chairs and umbrella away when our backs were turned. But I'm trying to take my friend Loribelle's advice and let that gooooooo and forget the $150 it would cost to replace them. Andy went to the dollar store and found a replacement chair. It wasn't very comfortable, but she used it.

We cleaned up the condo, packed up, and drove home yesterday. All four of us--me, Andy, Sophie, and Skipper--were delighted to be home. And Taco was ecstatic that his dogs were home. Bella was silent on the subject.

Jesse fared pretty well while we were gone. He managed to confine all his dirty dishes to the kitchen sink. I told him that before I left again, I was going to teach him how to load the dishwasher. He took out the garbage, and he was able to feed himself pretty well on fast food and canned goods. Oh, I think he did cook some eggs and bacon a couple of times.

We brought Jesse a present back: a pair of shorts, a back scratcher, and a sea blue tee-shirt from Jimmy Buffett's Margaritaville restaurant with the words, "No Shirt, No Shoes, No Problem." That's where we had lunch on Wednesday. I had my first Cuban sandwich, and it was scrumptious. Andy had a margarita; I had sweet tea; I do not like tequila.

Jesse and I ordered pizza last night. I haven't had a pizza in more than a year, and it was surely good. For breakfast this morning, I had a donut from the famous Panama City Beach establishment Thomas's Donuts. A scrumptious sour cream donut. We brought home a box full. There's one sour cream and one chocolate covered left. When they're gone, it's back to eating healthy. Vacation is over.

And today, I'm going to try to get a bit of sewing in. I missed not being able to go to my sewing room whenever I please and stitch up a quilt block.

Bummer about the beach chairs and umbrella, Can you contact the police department and claim them? I know you're once again far away so it would be difficult, but that just seems like theft!

Yesterday I cut backings for 3 small quilts (each less than 22" square) that already had battings cut so hope to machine quilt at least one of those today. It will be good to have those finished and tucked away.

PC Sundown

Our first day at the beach was great. Some clouds, but no rain. Very few people on the beach but lots of seagulls and sandpipers. A group of pelicans flew low across the water looking for fish. A very relaxing day.

I made a big bowl of chicken salad, and we've been eating it all day.

I took my beach chair to sit on the beach to read this afternoon, dozed off, and had a very nice beach nap.

A Chip of a Different Color

WOS26338

There is a place in every Lowe's, in every Walmart, Target, Home Depot, hardware store, or any place that sells stuff to gussy up a house that is a magic land of treasure for any artist or lover of color. I can rarely ever pass by these eye-catching displays without copping a few samples. In fact, I have a plastic bin full of them that I have collected over the years.

Chip2

I have used them to make bookmarkers, artist trading cards (ATCs), and other paper arts and crafts and altered art projects. And since I don't seem to be able to lay hands on any of them right now, below is a photo of some paint chip bookmarkers I found on Pinterest.

90c7b829e7d19b3e4916ebef2ddaff44
Mine are prettier, but I must have given them all away.

The other day, I was in Walmart and I happened to pass by the paint chip display without a thought in the world of taking any.
Then these caught my eye.

Chip1

Now I've seen paint chips with photos before. But none quite this charming.

Chip3
Especially this one.

Chip7
And of course I had to have the red one...

Chip5
...and this blue one featuring a beautiful hydrangea.

Do any of you collect paint chips? Have you used them in any art or craft projects? If you'd like to get in on the fun, here's a site with crafts projects made from paint chips. Or just google "paint chip projects" or "paint chip crafts" for more ideas.

Reading your blog reminded me of the challenge a few years back that our quilt guild did....we each had to find three paint chips that the color name started with the same letter as our initial in our name such as PEB..then we had to make our challenge quilt using the same color of fabric as our paint chips.
We had a great response and very fun quilts.

Mystery Solved

ND1

The Nancy Drew lap quilt, "The Mystery of the Double Disappearing Nine Patch," is finished. I got the last of the binding sewn down yesterday. Many thanks to my friend Lena Colley at New Traditions for the great job of long-arm quilting. I'm ready for some nippy weather now. I can snuggle up with a good book or a movie and several furry creatures under this new quilt and stay toasty warm.

With all the clouds and rain, we've already been having some pretty cool temperatures. I think highs were in the 70s all last week, but we'll be seeing some 80s, even high 80s, this week if the weatherman's forecasts prove true. I, for one, have loved the cool weather; but I know there are some sun worshippers among us who have been missing the rays. Maybe they'll get some this week.

For the backing, I used the leftover 10" squares from the

Gotta go check on my chicken now.

Candy Cane Dip Recipe

Candy Cane Dip Recipe

Ingredients
8 oz Cream Cheese
13 oz Marshmallow Creme
5 to 7 Candy Canes
Instructions
Mix well the soft cream cheese and marshmallow creme together.
Crush the candy canes in small pieces and add it to the mixture. Mix all together and serve.
Notes
Perfect for neighbor gifts and Christmas parties!

Go, Grannies, Go!

G71-80

Here are Granny Numbers 71-80. That means forty more to go until I have enough for the quilt I want to make. Two-thirds of my blocks are complete. It's all downhill from here.

But painwise, things are looking up. Since Friday, I have been staying off my feet for most of the time, alternating ice packs with heating pad on my back, and taking my Meloxicam the way Dr. N. ordered it. The pain, although not completely and utterly gone, is much better than it has been in weeks.

I just have to keep reminding myself of limits. For instance, today I cut out and sewed together two granny blocks. That's enough. My back is still not hurting, but it's beginning to feel a little tight. So I'm going now to lie down and do another cold/heat rotation.

I hope everyone is having a great weekend.

Do you have a "trick" for getting your points to line up so perfectly? I loathe working with patterns that have so many points, and I'm a perfectionist, so it becomes very time consuming! LOVE this quilt you are working on, but just thinking of all the points you will have to line up when you sew it all together gives me a major headache - LOL!!

On 08/19/2013, Susan Ramey Cleveland said ...

I do have a bit of a trick! Teresa. I didn't invent it, but I use it all the time. It's call nested seams. Follow the link below.
http://quiltcetera.wordpress.com/2010/02/23/tutorial-tuesday-nesting-seams-in-a-four-patch/

I tried to email this to you, but the message came back.

On 08/20/2013, Teresa said ...

Thank you SO MUCH, Susan! I've always done the nested seams like that, but I think the "trick" could be in the use of the fork pins. Seems like they might hold the seams in place better than using two separate pins. I will definitely try that :)
I'm not sure why my email message came back to you - sometimes people mistake the 3rd letter for an "I" rather than an "L"?? Guess I should permanently change that to make it more clear - lol

On a Dreary Saturday

I put baby back ribs in the crock pot last night. Today I slathered them in BBQ sauce and put them under the broiler for a few minutes. I also made blackeyed peas and coleslaw. Andy came for lunch, and we had a feast.

I'm trying to spend as much time in bed as possible to see if some of the inflammation in my back will heal. Also taking Meloxicam twice a day and doing the ice/heat rotation. The pain is some better, but I'm still not ready to run a marathon. And I'm getting quite bored. I would much rather be quilting.

It's a very gloomy Saturday here. In fact, most of August has been wet a dreary. But the rain and clouds have kept the temps down--a good thing. August can be truly brutal in Alabama.

Sophie Belle Patterpaw says she hopes all of you are having a great Saturday afternoon.

Back Track

I visited with my orthopedic surgeon on Tuesday. He seemed as frustrated with the entire situation as I am. We talked about surgery. It was clear that he wants to resort to that option about as much as I do. We decided to try physical therapy. I have an appointment next week with a therapist.

This morning, my goal is to get up, get showered and dressed, go to the dentist for cleaning and exam, and stop at the grocery store on the way home for coffee creamer. That should about finish me off for the day.

Oh girl, I hear you. I don't know if I mentioned I fell and broke my left arm 2 weeks ago. I am going to PT 2 times a week. I went off the Methotrexate so the Humerus bone would heal better. I ache all over. My back is doing ok...so far. Therapy will help your back. It will take a couple of weeks, but the exercises and tens unit/warm or cold packs, should help.
It gets depressing doesn't it!! hugs

On 08/15/2013, Barbara Anne said ...

Hoping the PT will help you from top to bottom and everywhere in between. PT could aggrivate the awful, mean, unwelcome fibroMonster but as long as the PT folks know he's lurking in the background, perhaps they have a method to banish him, say ... forever?! I vote for that!

It's been blissfully cool today with the high just 80*F. so AMIL and I went to the Farmer's Market and a delightful grocery called Fresh Market. This afternoon I blanched and froze 6qts of butterbeans that I got at the Farmer's Market. I am tired!

The dishwasher is running and my spoons are gone. Perhaps those clean dishes will stay in the dishwasher until tomorrow. Sounds good to me!

Hugs!

I hope the PT helps too. It is so important to get a therapist familiar and sensitive to the Fibro issues.
For years I had traditional PT which was a lot of exercising that they insisted would help but always made it worse and made me feel like I had failed in some way. Then I found a group that completely understood. Heat treatments, tens, ultrasound and then a gentle manipulative hands on approach and very simple "don't push yourself" exercises. Not even exercises exactly. And my back got better. And finally I got to a place where with restraint toward my activities I can do most things. I really hope you get some relief.

On the Back Porch

A1

I have been wanting a small wicker settee for my back porch for a while now to match my wicker theme. Daughter Andy found me one Sunday at our local flea marker, as well as a second end table. The pieces had been marked down, and the price was right, so they came home to the Yellow House.

The new wicker would have made it a little crowded on my small screened porch when added to the pieces I already had. So Andy took one of the rockers and a small stool for her porch.

The problem left for me was the mess I had let the porch become. Everything on it--floor boards, furniture, knick knacks, etc.--was covered with a light coat of dirt. So before I could make it look cozy and inviting, I had to do some cleaning. Which I did.

I remember not long ago when I could clean like crazy all day long. No job was too big. Those days are gone. I paid and am still paying, with pain and stiffness and fatigure, for the work I did yesterday.

But the furbies and I have a great place to sit and enjoy the birds and the breezes--and Skipper barking his loud shrill bark as he makes his way slowly but surely to our neighbors on the other side of the earth.

The wicker settee is absolutely PERFECT and each adornment adds HAPPY little color pops! And NEED I say that the cutie kitty-people, lovely Ms. Sophie & Lil' Skipper are the icing on the cake so to speak! Nicely done, my sweet friend! I'll be right over! LOVE YOU!

I'm just back from the library and it's hot and so very humid here. No fun at all!

Your porch, wicker furniture, and charming accesories look so inviting and the fact that the porch is screened-in is divine! Everyone with two legs or four legs can enjoy bug-free breezes and that makes all the difference in the South during the summer.

I'm sorry you're feeling the effects of the cleaning you did yesterday. Recently I was bewailing my limitations to a friend who seems to have the energy of the Energizer Bunny. Total bummer! Please color me some delightful shade of green in my envy of her.

Your porch looks so inviting. Nice touches you made with the accessories, especially the blue birds. Thanks for sharing the pictures .

What an inviting looking porch. Have Skipper say Hi for me when he gets to China.:-)

Love the new porch furniture Susan. One thing - watch out for kitty paws. Our family history with this furniture is that the cats loved the wicker to sharpen their claws. Once they loosen it up it becomes hard to rewind and fasten down again.

Happy Birthday, Taco & Bella

DSC_0065
The day, last September, when Jesse brought the little darlings home.

Our dynamic duo turned one year old this month, sometime around the first week. Since nobody can remember the exact date they were born at Andy's house, we're just celebrating all month. Happy Birthday, you fursome felines.

At first they were timid and stayed in Jesse's room. Also, they were not yet dog safe, so they had to be quarantined. Oh, I remember the anxiety of those days.

After we got the gate up blocking the dogs from the upstairs, the kitties ventured out to the sewing room.

Oh how they loved exploring in the sewing room.

But they still loved snuggling with Jesse too.

And they grew...

...and moved into their downstairs condo. Sophie had finally decided they weren't vermin to be eliminated.

When they had grown quite a bit, they took over Skipper's doggie bed.
