200 Pretties and a Handsome

Squares1I received my package of fabric squares yesterday. This is from the latest I Spy charm square swap that I took part in--this one hosted by Linnea. I've been having fun going through the stack and enjoying all 200 of these fabric squares. Someday they'll go into one or more cuddle quilts.

Squares2

It's going to be a busy day today. I have a meeting with my high school reunion committee at lunchtime. Then this evening, Andy and I are taking Jesse out to dinner for his birthday. The best grandson in the whole world was born a little after 9:00 p.m., on March 31, 1989--just a couple of hours away from being an April Fool baby. No fool, he. Smart as a whip and twice as handsome.

Jesse
Happy Birthday, Spike!

Linking to Beverly's Pink Saturday Party--of course.

Happy Birthday, Spike!! May the year ahead be full of good things for you.

Love your delicious charm squares! Have I ever shown you the joyful charm square Christmas quilt I was given by a friend?

I hope to finish the borders on this nursery wall hanging today and it won't be difficult to do if I get to it without more dilly-dallying.

Hugs!

UFO Progress Report: Week 12

X1I didn't get much done in the way of busting UFOs this week, just a wee little bit of hand quilting on the "Blackberry Creek" quilt. It's looking like I will not have it ready for guild show-and-tell in April as I had hoped.

Mostly this week, I've spent my sewing room time getting things ready for our guild's "yard sale," which we'll be holding at our next meeting.

While I was preparing my stuff for sale I got to thinking that I'll be stuck at my table and not be able to go around and see what everyone else has. Bummer that. Well, at least I won't be able to buy stuff I don't need.

~

47743_1499394017240_1605861853_31181886_7866763_n

We have had another death in the family this week. Cait and Kathryn, my DDs who live in Providence, R.I., lost their sweat Smeagol. He was only six years old and had not been sick. Just fell dead, probably with a heart attack or blood clot.  I never had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Smeagol in person, but Cait and Kathryn say he was the sweetest kitty ever. They are heartbroken.
~
Here comes Mr. Linky. Be sure to enter your link here to let us know what you have or have not been doing this week.

Looks like you have some wonderful yard sale stuff. I've been looking at the Sidewinder but I don't know if I would like it. Had one similar years ago but it did not have a speed control and the spool of thread would end up across the room because it was too fast. Sorry you may not finish your quilt in time for the show. I know you really wanted to have it finished. Next month!

On 03/30/2012, Barbara Anne said ...

Sympathy to Cait and Kathryn on the loss of their sweet kitty Smeagol. Having lost several beloved four legged furry kids, I certainly understand the empty places in heart and home when one dies. Big hugs to them both.

I hope someone can sit at your table while you look around the other guild sale tables! Hope you sell all you want to sell.

Have settled on borders for a nursery wallhanging. The chosen nursery colors for this baby boy are blue/gray, cream, "light navy" (???), olive green, and a touch of red and yellow - oh, and black furniture. I didn't have the heart to tell this new mommy that the toys will be primary colors. These borders have had me hemming and hawing for a week so today it's fish or cut bate as my uncle used to say.

When do we get to see the 3 quilts you picked up from the quilter last week? :D

Hugs!

Goodies

I finally made it to the tax accountant's office. I had a nice visit with her, during which we mostly talked about Ramey's book. I have become a celebrity at FIsher Tax because of that book. I'm the sister of Ramey Channel. They love her book. If you haven't read it, check it out: Sweet Music on Moonlight Ridge.

On my way home, I made a quick stop at the Lovelady Center Thrift Store. And I hit the jackpot. Here's what I came away with.

Goodies1
Little Red Coffee Pot

Goodies2
Pretty bundt pan. I can't wait to see a cake come out of this.

  Goodies3 jpeg

Pressed glass dessert bowl. I have become quite found of clear pressed glass pieces.

Goodies4
Blue-and-white Laura Ashley coverlet

Goodies5
This goodie didn't come from the thrift store. One of my dearest friends in all the world gave it to me for my birthday. Thank you, K.

Goodies6
And the goodest goodie of all, Miss Daisy has come for the weekend.

Don't forget that tomorrow is UFO Progress Report Day. I'm going to try myself not to forget it.

Welcome to your home away from home, Miss Daisy!

Love the treasures your found at the thrift store, Susan! Score, big time! I have an identical bundt pan that was my mothers. Be sure to grease and flour the interior surfaces well because cakes will stick if you don't. I know this for a sad fact.

I know that rooster box delighted you to the max as much as you love all things rooster and hen! Well chosen, K.!

Another lax UFO week for me. Hanging my head here.

This Little Light of Mine

Lamp1

Andy and I had lunch at Cracker Barrel on Saturday, and afterwards, of course, we had to do a little shopping in their country store. And just look what I found!

Some of you long-time readers of my blog might remember a while back when I saw a lamp much like the one in the photo above on Anthropologie maybe, or someplace online, and I wanted it so badly. But it was very pricey, so I decided I'd make my own. I bought a white teapot (that's it in the picture) and a couple of other white dishes, but that's as far as it got. I was pretty much bumfuzzled as to how to go about making a lamp. That's one thing I've never made. I knew it required some drilling; and drilling is a word that makes me nervous.

When I saw this lamp at Cracker Barrel, I think I squealed. I know I found Andy and made her come and look. She insisted that I buy it immediately. So since Andy insisted, and the lamp was marked down 25%, I did just that. At home I did a little reorganizing in my dining room to make a spot for the lamp.

Lamp2
So now my little teapot lamp shares a corner with Raggedy Ann and Raggedy Andy, the basket that Andy gave me for my birthday, a pink doily that my mama made, and some other goodies.

  Lamp3
My red metal tray, which came from Home Goods I believe, is just right for holding my little lamp.

Lamp4
The Love heart was a thrift store find a while back.

Lamp5
A sweet little tea cup finial holds the shade on.

Lamp7
I found this bee pot hanger at Cracker Barrel too, and hung it from a red bowl in my china hutch.

Lamp9
I rearranged this table too.

I'm linking up with Cleo's "Show Off Your Cottage Monday" at her House in the Roses blog. If you aren't familiar with this blog, I strongly recommend a visit. It's one of the most beautiful blogs on the internet. Today, in addition to links to lots of other cottage blogs, she has photos of some ModPodge projects that she did--and they are simply and amazingly lovely.

UFO Report: Part Deux

Well, I just got all out of whack this week, didn't I? I think Fibrofog is warring with Senior Moment for control of my brain. Thanks, Blogless Barbara, for reminding me of my slippances. So here are photos of the UFOs I recently picked up from the quilter. They aren't bound yet, so they aren't busted, but they're close. (Click on photos for larger views.)

UFO1
"Family Portrait"

UFO2
Quilted in snowflakes

UFO3
"Family Portrait" back

UFO4
Close-up of backing fabric, which I believe I purchased at WalMart several years ago

UFO5
"Ziggy Zags," a string-pieced cuddle quilt, made from the blocks left over from "Family Portrait"

UFO6
"Cherry Lasagna" made from a Mary Englebreit jelly roll

UFO7
"Cherry Lasagna" back

UFO8
Lena's free-hand cherries

All quilting on the above quilts was expertly done by Lena Colley and the ladies at New Traditions Quilting in Birmingham, Alabama.
***

Blogless Barbara got her "Summer Rose" quilt bordered. A friend made the center block for Barbara from the book Fresh Cut Flowers by Liz Schmidt and Stephen Seifert. She will applique the leaves where they're pinned.

Sorry it took so many posts to get it all together this week. Maybe I'll do better next Friday. We'll see. Meanwhile, why don't you take a hop over to Beverly's blog for some Pink Saturday prettiness?

Do we get to see the quilts you picked up and my bit of progress from last week? Hope so!

Today I've been cutting squares to make HSTs in blues, grays, and even black for a friend's daughter's nursery. I haven't seen nursery photos yet, so am hopeful I chose well. I may just make pinwheels and not sew any together until I see pictures or may just wing it from the little information I have.

My spoons are gone from standing to cut and the back and forth walk to the iron. I know that little walk does my circulation good, but it takes spoons after a while.

Hugs!

So I'll post it when it's been given away. I hope to get back with some UFO work soon.

Laughing in the Yellow Rain

Gerans

Can you see that thick layer of pollen all over everything in the photo? It's not supposed to be here yet. Guess it doesn't matter though. Swollen, itchy eyes are no worse now than they'd be in May I suppose.

Billy is here putting in my new air conditioner/furnace. He says 16 years was a good run on the old one. OK.

I want to thank everyone who sent out prayers and good wishes for Grandmother Billie's recovering. She's still a sick lady, but much improved. Not in imminent danger of death at this point.

They tell us rain is coming. I hope so. It doesn't take long with no rainfall for things to get dry around here. Already, forest fires are popping up. And maybe the rain will clean some of this pollen out of the air.

Cheers that Grandmother Billie is improving, slowly but surely! She remains in my prayers as do those who need prayer and their families.

I'm watching the pollen mess march toward us with some dread. Why do I not remember the yellow coating on everything from the years I lived in Memphis, Louisville, and Waco?? It's horrible here and you have to run the windshield wipers before you can drive.

Shame on me, I've been working on a new project this week and have a baby quilt to make - but in modern, not baby colors. My UFOs wait once again. I may get some applique ready on a UFO and that would count as progress for this week.

Hugs!

Super Sister Supper

SachetMy sisters and I had a fun gathering at my house last light. India, my niece, came too and brought me this sweet little lavender sachet that she had made for me. She also brought me a bar of French milled soap, which smells so good.

We chowed down on my homemade chicken salad, which everyone loved, along with fresh strawberries and some cookies and sherbert for dessert.

Lots of talking and laughing took place. Then India and Joanne went home; and Ramey and I settled in for our weekly visit with Raylan Givens of "Justified."

The doggies and I were ready to crawl into bed when the show was over and Ramey said goodnight. I think I got through about two paragraphs of my book before my eyelids refused to cooperate. Skipper and Sophie were asleep by the time their little bodies got stretched out.

Don't have a lot planned for today--just a trip to the post office to mail Beverly's prize package and then some hand quilting--trying to finish up the "Blackberry Creek" quilt. I'd love to have it finished in time for show and tell at the April guild meeting.

I have a stack of quilts to bind as well. Must get started on them soon.

Happy Hump Day, everyone!

Your new little sachet is so cute and I can just imagine how lovely it smells! Would love to have a scratch-and-sniff feature on blogs so we could all get a whiff of your new soap, too. India is so thoughtful!

Am happy to hear that you, Joanne, Ramey, and India had such a delightful time together, too.

I think I'll be putting tuna salad together in a few minutes because warm weather just calls for tuna sandwiches.

Am making progress on different sewing projects, but not UFOs today. I need to wrestle binding onto my Roses in Winter UFO but it's a larger quilt and that's daunting. Are my shoulders ready for that kind of workout???

Be good to you and please give Skipper and Sophie a hug from me.

Hugs!

Vernal Visions

Blooms

Happy First Day of Spring, everyone! Spring has already sprung here, I'm afraid, right into summer. It's been very hot and humid. Weird really. My lawn still isn't green, but some of the flowers that aren't supposed to bloom until March or April have already faded. I caught this cherry tree just minutes, I think, before it began its decline. I was on my way to church, stopped and snapped the picture, and when I returned, the tree had already lost much of its splendor.

Well, Spring is lovely, what I can see of it. My eyes have been so itchy and watery and gummy and swollen, till my vision isn't quite up to snuff these days.

A'sHouse

Here's A's Little Yellow House, all gussied up in azaleas. Andy has a beautiful purple tulip tree in her front yard, but it was past its prime when I gook this photo.

I picked up my three quilted quilts from Lena yesterday. I'll show them, unbound likely, on Friday.
We're having a Sister Supper tonight at my house and I'm serving homemade chicken salad. I cooked my chicken breasts last night in the crock pot. Now I have to go put my salad together and spruce up the downstairs a little bit.

Skip1
Here's Skipper basking in the spring sunshine coming through our living room window.

My computer is having a conniption this morning and will not cooperate. I can't do anything about the sqirrely formatting.

Our weather here in Indiana is weird, too. We went from winter to summer in a week! Not that I'm complaining about not shoveling snow, but I would have liked a couple of weeks of Spring before the Summer started!
Have a fun dinner tonight with all of your sisters!
Hugs...

What charming photos! Love Andy's new little house in its springtime splendor and Skipper in the puddle of sunshine is too cute!

Sorry you're bothered by allergies but welcome to the Sniffles club!

Here is Virginia it feels like May or June and one day last week the high was nearly 90*F. That is truly scary when you stop to think what June, July, and August might be like. Our Bradford pears and tulip tree bloomed and are putting on leaves now. The puzzlement is when to plant the veggies.

Your sister's dinner menu sounds festive and just right for this crazy weather.

Happy Spring Equinox to you!

Your daughter's Yellow House is so cozy looking! I'll bet they're thrilled living in such a great place! The arrangement in Skipper's picture is perfect...you ought to print it and put it in a 'doggy themed' frame! The tiny bit of nose peeking out is so cute!

On 03/20/2012, Sandra Hutchins said ...

Perfect photos! The cherry tree against the brilliant blue sky is awesome. The Little Yellow House looks so cheerful and neat as a pin. Azaleas are one of my favorite spring time blooming shrubs. I don't have any here because they need more water than I'm willing to provide.

We will all be so looking forward to photos of your three newest quilts! Sandy Gail

Wow! Your azaleas look GORGEOUS! We are several months behind you asfar as spring goes, but there are tiny shoots peeking up out of the earth now. Now let's just hope that we don't get more snow!!

I love the little yellow house. The black shutters and shades of pink in the blooms and a shot of green is stunning. I have a quilt in mind using these colors and just might name it after Andy!

Cupcake and a Movie

CupcakeSo last night, Andy came with two big sprinkled cupcakes and a DVD of the "My Week With Marilyn" movie that I've been wanting to see. I enjoyed the movie (and, indeed, the cupcake), but I was a litle disappointed. I don't think the woman who played Marilyn, Michelle Williams, did as good a job as might have been done by someone like, say, Charlize Theron. Nor were the other actors all that outstanding, with the exception of the young man, Eddie Redmayne, who played Colin, and the amazing Judi Dench, who played Dame Sybil Thorndike. They were both excellent--just like the cupcake.

What a happy looking cupcake! Love the polka-dot sprinkles.

Sounds like you and Andy had a wonderful time together. Too bad the movie was less than it might have been. I happened to see an interview with the actress who played Marilyn and even then I couldn't see how she could pull it off well. The movie clip that was shown at the time just verified my opinion - at least to me. ;)

Hope you have a lovely day!

Hugs!

Oh, would love a bite of that cupcake..haven't seen the movie yet, know it's really good. Thanks for chance at another giveaway, darling basket!!

You know, I wondered about that movie. Michelle Williams strikes me as a perfectly wonderful woman, but a bit on the quiet side. I wondered if she had enough "oomph" to play Marilyn Monroe. It will still be an interesting one to watch, love that Dame Judi Dench.

UFO Progress Report: Week 11

I have nothing to report on UFO progress, except that I'm going to pick up three quilts from the quilter today--but I already told you that yesterday.

Get-attachment.aspx

But I do have this beautiful Grandmother's Flower Garden to show you that our Blogless Sandy finished. Sandy's friend, who started this quilt, came down with cancer, and so Sandy offered to finish the quilt for her. It is now complete.

"I've been taking it apart and adding the garden path rows, the border, and the binding for the past year," Sandy reports. "I had to make myself do this one because the blocks were huge, cut unevenly, and sort of strange color combinations, but I'm glad that I stayed with the project. I hope that my friend will be pleased to see it."

I know she will be, Sandy. It's beautiful. I'm sorry I didn't pick this up last week. I had not checked my aol box for a while. In fact, due to spam and hacking, I'm in the process of phasing that address out. In future, please use suscleve@yahoo.com for my email address.

As of last night, Other Grandmother Billie was improved. She's by no means out of the woods, but her improvement gives us hope. Thanks for your thoughts and prayers. They are much appreciated.

Landscaper Steve is due to arrive pretty soon, so I must go and get dressed now. Happy Friday to all.

What a lovely quilt you finished for your friend, Sandy, and what beautiful work you did! Applause, applause!! I hope your friend is doing well these days.

Cheers that Grandmother Billie has improved! May she continue to get better and better day by day.

Susan, I will go right now and change your email address in my address book. Sorry about the spam annoyances.

This morning I looked out across our front yard and saw the pretty greens of early spring and the wonderful pinks of the ornamental plum blossoms. The little quilt I'm working on is also pink and green, so that's an added delight!

Hugs!

Sandy's Grandmother's Flower garden is so pretty. She did a good job for her friend. You've been busy, no wonder you haven't had time to work on UFO. I've made alittle progress but none on UFO's. Can't wait to see the Santa quilt. Who does your quilting? I know you have mentioned her before but does she have a blog?

On 03/16/2012, Jan said ...

Susan, I'm hoping Jesse's grandmother continues to improve and is out of the woods soon. Sandy's quilt is lovely and a labor of love, I'm sure. Picking up your quilts along with having Spring landscaping work done should raise your spirits some!

What a beautiful GFG quilt! Great job Sandy! I posted a Finish this week! Yay! My quilt took forever to finish and I really had to slog through it. Thanks for the extra push I needed Susan! Without our UFO Challenge, I'm sure this quilt would have sat in my closet for a few more years :)

Oh, I can't wait to see pictures of your finished quilts. I love to see how the quiting can enhance the beauty of the quilt.

Sandy's Grandmother's Flower Garden is so beautiful and vintage-looking. Oh how I wish I had the wherewithall to make one, but I just don't see it in the future. Not big on all those hexagons I guess.

I have linked up!

Dearest Susan,

Sending prayers and thoughts of healing for Grandmother Billie.

Wow, three quilts to be picked up from the quilter, that's amazing progress. I can't wait to see photos of them. Thank you for inspiring all of us to get our projects finished. Also, thanks for showing photos of my "Grandmother's Flower Garden" quilt that was started by my friend who has cancer. The comments from you and your readers are treasured.

I have your suscleve email address in my address book now. So sorry that spamers have ruined your AOL email. Happy spring time to all of you! Sandy Gail

Worries and Woes

Apples2

Things are a bit hectic at The Yellow House this week. Jesse's other grandmother is in ICU in critical condition. I haven't heard how she fared the night, but they were concerned that she might not make it through. She's is the kindest and sweetest person, one I consider a good friend. Our hearts are breaking.

I have been trying to organize my tax records. I had an appointment yesterday with the accountant lady, but had to reschedule for next week. My stomach and my nerves just couldn't get it together. I don't know why tax reporting has to be so complicated. I truly don't mind paying my taxes. I'm one of those rare animals who knows that a huge democracy cannot endure without taxes. I'm happy to help support all the freedoms, services, and protections that our tax money buys. But why do I have to go through this torture every year?

This afternoon I have to drive to Mountain Brook for my annual gyn checkup. Not a fun task in the best of times, but especially with things in such turmoil. But hopefully, it will all be over for a year. Unless they find another lump or bump, which they usually do, in which case I'll be invited back in a month or two.

On top of all the sadness, bother, and uncertainty, allergies threated to lay me low. My throat is sore and my eyes are so itchy and gummy I can hardly see. But all the blooming stuff sure is pretty.

Steve is coming tomorrow to clean up the yards and lay new pinestraw and get us ready for spring.

I had thought I would make corned beef and cabbage and have a family gathering on Saturday, St. Patty's Day, in honor of our great grandmother and great-great grandparents, who were from the Emerald Isle. I found a recipe on Pinterest that tells how to corn your own beef. I was even going to try that. But with all the uncertainty (plus, I recently learned that Ramey has gone vegan), I think I'll just boil up some cabbage and eat it myself--forego the corned beef altogether. Maybe I'll ask Ramey to join me.

Don't forget to leave a comment, either in the post at top of the page or any of my blog posts this week for a chance to win the Easter basket.

Ooooh boy! Lena (my long-arm quilter buddy) just called to tell me she has three quilts ready for me to pick up. I know one is the Santa Panel quilt, "Family Portrait." Forget right off what the others are. I told her I'd come by tomorrow. Bye for now.

Prayers are with Jesse and his grandmother.
Beautiful giveaway you are giving.

I hope things settle down, that Jesse's other grandmother improves quickly, that the tax info. falls into place without trauma, that your GYN appt. is simple and 100% okay, and that getting your glorious quilts back can be the icing on the cake to make everything better.

Prayers for Jesse's other grandmother and all who love this sweet lady.

Be good to you and take allergy meds. Wouldn't it be wonderful if there were no allergies?

I hope to have UFO progress to report so need to get off of this computer!

Hugs!

I am so sorry to hear about the grandmother. I will keep her and you and the families in my prayers.
I am like you, I hate Tax time!! I wish it was easier too. I don't know why they have to make it so complicated. It's just mind-boggling.
Prayers also for your gyn checkup!!
I do love the looks of your delicious apples and that vintage chicken...beautiful picture.
Hugs,
Brenda

Here's hoping that the other grandmother will recuperate fully and with little or no pain. Tax preparation is certainly not one of the "funner" things in life. I sympathize with you on that.

Quilts Galore and Giveaways O'plenty

Wow! Yesterday was a busy, busy day at Guild. First I had to take care of my Block of the Month duties.

BQG3
Here are some of the Bento Box blocks that were turned in, 49 in all, which went to two lucky winners.

***
Before the business portion of our meeting, our president Vasha and treasurer Craig unveiled "The Caldwell Quilt." Three years in the making by members of Birmingham Quilters Guild, this quilt honors the memories of two of our beloved members, Dr. Tom Caldwell and his daughter Kathy Caldwell, who died in an auto crash in 2008.

BQG7
The Caldwell Quilt unveilling

The quilt is being presented to The American Village in Montevallo, Alabama, for permanent display. Dr. Tom loved quilting, history, and geneaology, and did a lot of work and promotion for this 18th-century American village recreation. Tom's daughter Claire was at the meeting for the unveiling.

BQG8
The project began with a search for vintage and reproduction fabrics for an authentic 18th-century look. This search yielded fabrics from as far away as Europe.

BQG9
Several members lent their skills to accomplish the beautiful hand quilting, which this photo does little or nothing to highlight.

***
After all the guild busines and show-and-tell was completed, Lisa, Judy, and I took to the "stage" to present our program called "Adventures in Blogging." I have a feeling that we'll be seeing several more BQG members join the Blogosphere before too long.

Below is a look at some of the wonderful Show-and-Tell that hung from our clotheslines yesterday.

BQG2
This is Lisa's gorgeous Fall Diamonds quilt. Be sure to visit her blog sometime this week for a chance to win a whole set of hand-cut diamonds (on straight of grain) to make your own version of this quilt.

President Vasha R. made this fun "Lounge Lizards" vignette from the fabrics she received in an "ugly fabric" swap. It served as quite a conversation piece at the meeting.

These blocks are samples for an "Easy Hunter's Star" workshop being held for guild members.

What glorious quilts, one and all.

The quilt in honor and in memory of Dr. Caldwell and Kathy is certainly beautiful and is a treasure. How wonderful it will be on permanent display at The American Village that meant so much to them. Hugs for Claire and all who loved them.

I've visited both Lisa and Judy and am going thru my week with my fingers crossed!

Hope you're feeling good.

Hugs!

The Caldwell quilt is beautiful in the picture and I'm sure it is so much more in person. Your guild has some very talented quilters, always enjoy looking. Put my name in the basket for your giveaway, I'll go visit Lisa and Judy.

Not sure where my comment went to, so forgive me if I repeat.
That basket just looks so pretty - I'd love for it to live in my sewing room. Please pick me?
Your guild has some very talented quilters! All the quilts are gorgeous, and I like that you have the show and tell quilts displayed around the room during the meeting. Our guild has show and tell at the end of each meeting and the quilter holds up their quilt and has a few seconds to tell a little about it - unfortunately, some in the audience by then are ready to pack up and leave for home - kind of disrespectful. I like your system better!

Hi Susan ~ Oooh, I wish I could have been with you at your guild meeting. It sounds like you always have a great time and such show-and-tells!! I especially would have loved the session about blogging! I hope you recruited some new bloggers!

I have not had an Easter Basket for many many years! That Ol' Easter fella forgot about us as we got older. Hmmm.
I'd be a "cadbury" bunny and cluck all over the place if I won!!
