I think it started on Friday evening, when my daughter Andy and I went to Walmart for grocery shopping, where Andy's purse was stolen in the blink of an eye right out of her buggy while she was walking toward the lettuce. It's too long a story to go into detail, but the WM security was pretty unhelpful, suggesting that Andy probably left her purse in the car.
A slap-dab miracle occurred the next morning (Saturday), however, while Andy was cancelling credit cards and bank accounts and cell phone service (yep, they even got her Blackberry). She got a call from a bicycler on Hwy. 78 who had found her purse lying on the side of the road. Nothing was missing except a little bit of cash she had. We praised God and moved on.
On Saturday afternoon things got tense. We were under tornado warnings for hours. Andy came up to stay with me. (Actually, I might never have known had she not come in and told me--which might not have been a bad thing.) The tv weather people were reporting a "huge wedge tornado" (the weather people used several terms that were new to me; this was one of them) coming out of Walker County, heading straight for us. So of course, there was much nail biting and praying. Things drug on such-wise for a long time, the storm passed way to the north of us, we got a little rain but no wedge, and Andy went home.
A little while later, we did have a pretty intense storm, with wind and hail--but no wedgies or tornadoes. I was not to learn until Sunday morning that my phone service and internet service had been knocked out. I reported my problem post haste.
Andy told me we had more hail storms on Sunday night, but the dogs and I slept through those; we were tuckered out.
Monday morning, I still had no phone or internet--just my cell phone. I had a zillion errands to run--driver's license renewal, tax lady, shopping, delivering "Two by Two" quilt to church, and I don't know what all. While at one of these location, a nice Windstream fellow called me and told me that my problem had been fixed.
When I got home from my first round of errands, I still had no phone and no internet, so I reported again. After letting the dogs outside for a nature call and then washing the mud off Skipper (yep, hole digging) and getting my shirt all muddy and having to change clothes, off I went to my second round of errands. While in the middle of one of these, the nice Windstream fellow called me to say he has to get into the house to fix the problem. So, I high-tailed it back home, where he was waiting for me. He did get it all fixed that time, and off I went again. I think I drove more yesterday than the whole previous month's driving combined.
When I finally got back online yesterday afternoon, I had an email from a cousin telling me that one of my favorite people in the world had passed away--Aunt Edna. Actually, she's my children's aunt and my aunt only by marriage to my first husband. But I think of her, and all her sisters, as my aunts. Aunt Edna was one of the funniest people I have ever known. You couldn't be around her long without laughing. She was in her early 80s and had been in poor health for some time.
I'll miss you Aunt Edna. Rest in peace, beautiful lady.
The above photo of Aunt Edna and Uncle Jim is from our church directory.
I hope the next few days will continue calm, as this morning has been. Skipper has dug only one small hole today, with little mud left on his footsies. The two of them, Sophie and Skip, have had only a couple of bark attacks as cars go by on the street. No bad news has arrived--yet. I pray the trend continues. I want to be calm when I attend Aunt Edna's memorial this afternoon.
