Plucking Daisies

Field_of_daisies_full There is a deeply ingrained belief in many of us (including me) that we should not ask God for too much, or that we should only ask for others and never for ourselves. It is almost like we think that it would be greedy to ask for so much or that we might somehow annoy God with the boldness of our request.

Nothing could be further from the truth. God loves to give. Giving is part of who He is. Remember these words of Jesus:  “Ask and you shall receive. Seek and you will find. Knock and the door shall be opened”

When we think small and ask little of Him we are actually limiting the capacity of almighty God to pour out His graces into our situation. It sounds ridiculous that mere mortals like us could possibly limit almighty God in this way, yet that is exactly what we do when we close ourselves off to the wonderful expansiveness of His giving. Next time think big, ask big and expect big. Pluck all those daisies! The poem overleaf has been written to help you. May you live in His abundance and overflow.

Set No Limit

How little well you know Me
Finite man,
And how little well you please Me
Finite man,
When you limit Me,
Omnipotent power,
In the graces I would shower on you.

I have set you as a child
In a field of daisies,
Where each daisy is a grace
Unique to you.
Run free helter skelter
Plucking daisies
From your Creator.
Not just one
Or ten or twenty,
But many more daisies aplenty.

Remember finite man:
To give is My pleasure.
Set no limit to the measure
Of My unfolding plan.

I found the above here. And this is why we're going for the Full Monty, whole hog, holding nothing back. God has told us to ask for what we want, and we want nothing less than Vann's complete and total healing.

Today I hope you pluck some daisies. That's what we plan to do. God's blessing on everyone reading this.

I believe maybe it's the same as with friends. We are so reluctant to allow our friends to do for US because we think we are the ones who should give to & do for them. But a friend told me once that I was being SELFISH to not allow my friends the JOY of helping ME. That stuck in my head & I've never forgotten that it IS as blessed to receive as to give. I guess I just never considered that before. And I love the reminder that we need to give God or the Great Spirit or Buddha or whatever name we call the Creator the opportunity & the JOY to prove HIS desire to care for US. I will remember to pluck daisies on my own behalf, but also continue to pluck them for you & Vann! MUCH LOVE, Susan!

Have you ever sat in front of a fireplace and watched the glowing embers? One old log can burn brightly for a while, but then as it loses its energy, the flame lessens and so does the warmth it provides. But...add another log, and the two join forces and the flame rekindles and the flames glow forth and heat in all its glory is there!!!! So it is with love, and prayer...one prayer is wonderful, but the joining of more than one prayer, gives off so much energy it flies upward to the heavens. May your week be warmed with love and the prayers of all of us.
Love,
Trudy

Charisma

Charisma

The thing is, this fabric line, Charisma by Moda, is just right for a new quilt to hang in our living room. The colors are perfect, and the designs sing to me.

I have been trying for a couple of weeks now to resist ordering it. But everywhere I turn, there it is. It's like I'm supposed to have this fabric. I can't get away from it. And then there's the "If I don't get it now, it might be gone later" argument.

I hope all of you had a very good Thanksgiving. Paul and Karen (our neighbors) invited us to join them and their family last night for a holiday feast. Phillip and I went, but Vann is still recovering from his surgery, so we brought him a platter home. He has had a pretty tough few days with pain and soreness from the incisions, but he reports that he's feeling better this morning.

Phillip will be leaving us this afternoon to fly back to Laramie. We hate to see him go. But he and his wife Carrie, and our daughter Amy will be back in mid-December to stay through the holidays.

I hope all of you know how very much we're appreciating the prayers and good wishes that are being offered for Vann's return to good health. Please keep them coming. We know God hears and answers.

I had to have this fabric too! When we were on our quilting retreat a few weeks ago, we went on a "field trip" to a shop called In Between Stitches that had a quilt made up using Charisma. It had to have been the sweetest thing I had ever seen! The best part is, the quilt was made using a layer cake! The pattern they used is called Spice Cake, and lends itself perfectly to the fabric, which is too pretty to cut up into little bitty pieces. Can't wait to see what you come up with.

Go for it!! Lifes to short to procrastinate over a little fabric!! My hubby is in the middle of a health scare at the moment and as Im sure you know it makes you think about mortality and how fragile we all are! So if you want that fabric....buy it, buy lots of it!!! Cathy

Pardon Me!

Bush-turkey-mad Sorry. I know this is disrespectful toward President Bush, the Office of the President, the tradition, the Holiday, and probably to the turkey himself. But I just couldn't help it. This picture is too funny. But it also points up some of the many dangers inherent in serving in the nation's highest office.

HAPPY THANKSGIVING, everyone. May God bless each of you, your families, and your homes.

Happy Anniverary, Boo!

Anniversary

Anniversary 2

Thank you, sweet husband, for the 14 happiest years of my life. I love you. (Sorry I didn't have a monkey card to give you, but I love mine and my flowers.) --Suzie

This picture was taken on November 26, 1994, at approximately 2:p.m., just after we became husband and wife. Aren't we cute?

Vann's surgery went very well yesterday. But of course, he's feeling very sore and achy today. Having four holes punched in your abdomen doesn't do a thing for your ability to party down.

We won't get the results of the biopsies until the middle of next week, due to the holiday break. But we can deal with that.

We continue to thank you all and ask God's blessings on you for the healing thoughts and prayers you're sending our way. As Jesus said once, "Don't worry; just believe."

It seems I have less and less time these days to answer comments and e-mails, but please know that each of us reads each and every one of them. They're hitting their mark. Keep 'em coming, please.

After our wedding at the church that day, some friends joined us back at our house for refreshments. My sister made our cake (Hummingbird). Again I ask you: Aren't we cute?

Wishing all our friends out there a beautiful day. Please join us in celebrating our life together.

Sittin' and Knittin'

Scarf I finished knitting this scarf this morning. I have a specific purpose for it, but I'm not at liberty to say what yet.

Vann's laproscopy will be tomorrow instead of today. That news came after he had fasted from midnight last night until 8:30 or so this morning. No early morning coffee.

We thank you, friends, and continue to pray for you. We always knew we had friends, but the outpouring of love and friendship (both in person, by phone, and from cyberspace) that we've experienced recently has about bowled us over--including an unbelievably inspiring and uplifting service at church yesterday. Please continue to pray. Those prayers are the wheels that are going to carry us through. We love you all.

Ooops! Almost forgot to say that Phillip is coming in this afternoon. In fact, he's about to board a plane in Denver in about an hour.

UPDATE: Phillip just arrived safe and sound. Don't know who was gladder to see him: his dad, me, or Sophie. I can say that Sophie put on the biggest show though.

Dear Friends and Prayer Warriors

Quilting

"Again, I tell you that if two of you on earth agree about anything you ask for, it will be done for you by my Father in heaven.
--Matthew 18:10

We spent most of yesterday afternoon in doctors' offices. Vann's surgeon is working now on scheduling him for a biopsy on Monday so that we'll know for sure just what and how much we're dealing with. Please continue to lift Vann up to our Lord in prayer and send out healing thoughts. Now not only is he feeling this healing power, so am I. Thank you all so much. Thank You, Friends

Banket We are feeling the love and prayers that you are sending out. We have received prayers from all over the country and as far away as Austria. We thank you and ask God's blessings on you and your families. We know that your prayers are hitting their mark. I asked Vann if he could feel the healing power from them, and he said he absolutely could. Please, please keep them coming. I'm printing out all the e-mail prayers and blog comments to make Vann a prayer journal. We love you all.

Our sweet friend next door, Ashley, left us three loaves of her delicious banana nut bread on the front porch yesterday morning. After work, she came over and visited for a while and told us that she had added Vann to "the largest prayer group in Alabama." And this morning, she met me and Sophie on our early-morning walk and gave us this beautiful fleece blanket that she made for Vann. Friends like her, and like you, and the healing power of God will see us through this.

Please, dear ones, continue to pray and send out healing thoughts.

May God's richest blessings be with each and every one of you.

Prayer Request

Marklin Altar Candles We got the report from Vann's medical tests yesterday. His doctor says he has a tumor on his pancreas that is pushing against his large intestine, causing his problems. Indications are that it's a malignant tumor. We are seeing an oncologist tomorrow and another one next week for second opinion, treatment options, etc. Vann and I have great faith in modern medicine; but we have even greater faith in our God. We know that he works for good in the lives of those who love him. And we do love him. Please join us, our friends, and family in lifting Vann up in prayer. Prayer is powerful, as we know. We've seen it work healing miracles, and we know it can do the same for Vann. We love you all and thank you for your concern and your prayers.

I am sorry to hear this news. I think you'll find that there are many treatment options, and chances for a complete recovery are very good. Modern medicine is truly remarkable.

I do understand how you feel. When Jim was diagnosed with kidney cancer 2 years ago...I felt so helpless. The future seemed so bleak. So black.

You will get through this. Best wishes and prayers to you both. I'm here for you if you want to "talk."

I'm so sorry about this new.
Pour une malade ou pour soi ...

Seigneur, me voici devant toi,

Aide-moi à te dire: *Je crois en Toi
Je crois que tu me fais vivre
d'une vie nouvelle
que rien, même la mort,
ne pourra détruire.
Aide-moi, ne m'abandonne pas !''

I'm thinking of you.
love
Alexandrine

Polka Dots & Rick Rack Ready to Go

Dot apron bed
This is the featured item in my goody box that I'm sending my Polka Dots & Rick Rack swap partner today. Sharon hosted this swap. That girl comes up with some great ideas, and this was one of them. I had a fun time making the apron and pin and shopping for the little extra goodies. What's the next one gonna be, Sharon?

Here are some more pics of the swap goodies. The rosette on the apron is a detachable pin.

We're going this afternoon to talk to Vann's doctor about the results of the tests he had done on Monday.  We appreciate all the prayers and concerns. Please keep Vann in your prayers.

Minute Made

Apron It's amazing what you can get done when you spend only a few minutes a day in the sewing room--NOT MUCH!

I'm behind schedule again. I did get my cookbook proof out on time, and that made me feel good, but I've had to cry "mercy" to a couple of swap mama's because of lateness.

Vann and I spent a big part of yesterday at the doctor's office and lab. They drained him of five vials of blood and did a CT scan. He's supposed to get the results today. Thank you all for your well wishes. My man has had a really tough autumn so far.

Also I'm expecting company today. A high school friend who lives in Virginia is traveling through on her way home from Florida and wants to stop by for a visit. Although I'm excited about seeing her, it's really not the best time. My house is a wreck, Vann is puny, and I'm needing to work on projects. So I'm on my way now to the sewing room for a few minutes--until it's time to do something else.

Butterfly+Award Later: I meant to show you the award that Clare at Sorta Frugal gave Blackberry Creek. Thanks so much, Clare. If you haven't visited Sorta Frugal yet, you should. Clare is a terrific sewer and crafter and always has something neat to show.

Susan, my husband has been ill since March so I know how stressful it is and it makes everything else in your daily life more difficult. Tasks and things that you once breezed through without thinking start to loom large--there's a lot more on your plate. It can take its toll on you, trust me. You take care and take it easy. I had to cancel my sisters' annual fall visit. I felt bad, but I just couldn't manage it. People will understand. PS, call a cleaning service.

Twice Tagged

Books My blog-bud Beverly at How Sweet the Sound has tagged me for a fun meme. I'm to name seven random facts about myself that relate to books. That's easy for me. Books are one of my favorite things, right up there with fabric. So here goes. This is what I'm supposed to do:

1. Link to the person who tagged you and post the rules on your blog. (Did that!)
2. Share seven random and/or weird book facts about yourself. (See below)
3. Tag seven random people at the end of your post, and include links to their blogs. (If you want to play, consider yourself tagged.)
4. Let each person know that they've been tagged by leaving a comment on their blog. (See #3.)

So here are my seven random book facts:

1. Some of my favorite books are: Lonesome Dove by Larry McMurtry, To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee, David Copperfield by Charles Dickens, Little Women by Louisa May Alcott,The Mists of Avalon by Marion Zimmer Bradley, Silk by Caitlin R. Kiernan, and The Shining by Stephen King.

2. The first book I ever read was Wicked John and the Devil by Richard Chase. I was in first grade. It's still one of my favorites.

3. When I was in 4th grade, I read a biography of Louisa May Alcott. That's when I decided I wanted to be a writer.

4. I have read 39 books this year. I'm currently reading #40, New Moon, the second in the Twilight series by Stephenie Meyers. Almost finished.

5. My favorite author, I guess, is Stephen King. Or Larry McMurtry. Anyway, I'll read anything that either one of them writes.

6. When I was in first grade, I asked the librarian at our school library to help me find a book. "Which book, dear?" she asked. "Gone With the Wind," I replied. I had heard my mama and big sister talk about that book so much that I couldn't wait to learn to read so I could read it. "Oh, you're too young to read that book," the librarian said. I almost cried. I think I was in 5th or 6th grade when I finally read it. The read was worth the wait.

7. My girlfriend and I used to sit up past lights-out and read Nancy Drew books under the covers with flashlights. Didn't everybody?

***

Another blogging friend, Janet, tagged me to play along with this meme. It's called "The 6th in the 6th" and here are the rules:

* Go to your sixth picture folder, then pick your sixth picture. (6th oldest or 6th newest? I chose 6th newest.)

* Pray that you remember the details. (What details? I don't remember details.)

* Post it on your blog. 6 of 6 (My photo is of our
friends Paul and Karen all dressed up for a Marine ball. I didn't even take this shot; Vann did. That's why it's so good.)

* Tag 5 others, and leave a comment to let them know they’ve been tagged
(If you want to play, be my guest--er, uh, tagee.)

I received the cookbook proof this weekend, finished proofing it, and it's packed and ready to be shipped out. Ship date for the cookbooks is Dec. 11.

Now I must get into the sewing room. I have an unfinished project that was due out on Saturday.

"The Shining" and "To Kill a Mockingbird" top my list, too! (Along with "The Stand.")
I'm in the middle of "Duma Key" and really enjoying that, too. I only wish there were more good horror writers out there these days. There used to be so much more to pick from!
I like the picture. If I remember, I'll play along another day. But I posted twice already today--one time about an award, which I am passing on to you...so go check out my blog!

My computer kicked in the middle of my comment, so I hope I'm not repeating myself!
SK is my favorite author, too. "The Shining" and "The Stand" are my favorites, with "IT" running a close third. I'm currently reading "Duma Key."
Wow, you read a lot! I couldn't come close to 39 books in a year. My new trick is to borrow a book on CD from the library and download it into the computer...then listen to it on my MP3 player!
Hey, come visit me...I nominated you for an award!

Ready to Twist and Turn, Metophorically Speaking

Twisting Turning 20 My pattern book arrived today from Donna for the Twisting Turning Twenty challenge. Here's a picture of the quilt we'll be making. Below are the fabrics I pulled from my Robyn Pandolph stash to use in it. I hope to start cutting on Monday.

I want to thank everyone who has been e-mailing and asking about mine and Vann's health. Vann is improving slowly. He's had a situations, starting with the walking pneumonia, where one thing led to another for the past couple of months. We're hoping he's finally on the track to recovery. My new doctor confirmed the diagnosis of a couple of old doctors of degenerative disk disease. He prescribed Celebrex, which seems to be helping. Thanks again for your kind words. We both appreciate your friendship and concern very much.

Those Robyn Pandolph fabrics will make a beautiful quilt!! Yowza! I like that pattern!

Glad to hear you and Vann are getting better, Jim had months of health "issues" stemming from antibiotics after surgery and, with the help of a nutritionist, who has removed all sugar, dairy, beef, corn....the list goes on...from his diet, he is finally getting better. Could Vann have a yeast invasion from the antibiotics?

Celebrex is truly a wonder drug if you can tolerate it.

Best wishes to you both.

Fun With Fabric

Hearts I have all the pieces for the heart blocks laid out on my design wall. Now I just have to get them sewn together and this one will be ready to quilt, which I think I'm going to hire Lena C. to do.

I have accepted a challenge to take part in Donna's Twisted Turning Twenty Party, and I'm waiting for the book that she has mailed to me to get started. I'm going to use some of the Robyn Pandolph "Flirt" collection of fat quarters (below) that I purchased a few months back and have never used.

Below is a little basket I made last week from instructions on the Pink Penguin blog. It's a very quick and easy project and makes a cute little basket as you can see. I'm not sure what I'll do with it

Turkey Day at Guild

Guild turkey Yesterday Mary U. and I drove to Homewood for the November meeting of Birmingham Quilters Guild. Peggy, our president, began the meeting with a lovely prayer honoring the four guild members we've lost in the last month: Dr. Tom and his daughter Cathy, John, and Trannie D.

Our program speaker was a young woman who comes into your home and gets you organized. She gave a great talk, complete with visuals, and I took notes.

The Show-n-Tell clothesline held some beauties. Here are photos.

Dog Tag

Sophie firstA while back, Miss Debbie and her doggie Chance tagged me to play this game and answer a bunch of questions about myself. But I can't type and SuSu has been busy, so we're just now getting around to doing it. Here it is.

1.  What breed are you?

I'm a Schnoodle; can't you tell? My doggie mama is a grey schnauzer and my doggie dad is a black poodle. My PopPop says that my schnauzer comes out way too often though.

2.  How old are you?

I asked SuSu, and she said I was born on January 11, 2002, which makes me 6 going on 7.

3.  What is your full name?

Sophie Belle Patterpaw Cleveland

4. Do you have any nicknames?

Soph, Googey, Monkey Dog, Sweet Time, Dog Dog, Little One (that's what Paul calls me), Queen of Castle Oaks (that's our subdivision), The Sophinator (Jesse gave me that one).

5.  Where do you sleep?

Mostly on the back of the sofa. But really, anywhere I want to.

Sophie Sleeping

6.  What is your favorite thing to do?

Ride with PopPop on the 4-wheeler. I also like to chase squirrels, play "stick," and get treats.

Sophie on 4wheeler

7.  What is something unusual or interesting about you?

When I was 5 years old, I got sick. It was something called Hemolytic Anemia. I almost went to the Rainbow Bridge. I had hardly any red blood cells when I got to the doctor. I had to have blood transfusions and take jucky medicines. All my friends prayed for me (I was on our church's prayer list). That's when we met Dr. Rachel because SuSu and PopPop didn't think my old doctor had acted quickly enough. I love Dr. Rachel, but I don't like to go to see her because it makes me remember The Bad Times, when I was so sick. But I got well because she was such a good doctor and because everybody prayed for me (and because I'm a "tough cookie").

8.  Who is your best friend?

I have too many friends to name them all, but I guess my PopPop is my best one. He takes me riding and we have all kinds of fun together. Here are some pictures of some of my other friends.

Sophie & Pop  Sophie Kinley

Sophie & Nolan

Sophie's daisy

Sophie's PhillipSophie & Darb *************************************************************************************************

9.  Did you go to obedience school...if so were you "Top Dog" or would you flunk out?

My PopPop taught me obedience. I learned real good. I'm very obedient--except when the schnauzer comes out. Like the time I ran all the way to Ziegler Rd. with PopPop chasing me or the time I jumped in the lake at Grover's house or the time I ate the fish bone while SuSu chased me all over Mr. Horace's ranch or the time...but now that I think of it, those were all things that Baby Sophie did. I'm much more better now.

10.  Can you do any tricks?

I can play tricks--is that the same thing? I often tell SuSu that I haven't had my Cesar food yet when PopPop has already given it to me. SuSu says I'm playing a trick.

Now if you're reading this and you're a doggie, or if a doggie lives at your house (or even a cat, I guess), SuSu and I tag you to play along. Just post these questions on your blog and answer them, then tag somedoggie else if you like.

Hola, Sophie! Gracias for tagging me, senorita! I am so glad you are still here and not playing on the other side of that Rainbow Bridge.
I like to sleep on the back of the couch, too!
Now I am going to write my own meme on my mamasita's computer.

Very cute interview. Our schnauzer liked to run off too and make us chase him so it must be a schnauzer thing.

Hi Sophie,

I like to sleep on the back of the sofa too. All the cushions of all the sofas are squashed down and dirty. I'm not allowed up on the new sofa, so Mom puts coat hangers on the cushions when she goes out. But sometimes she forgets.

Love,
Riley

HI Sophie and Susan,
We also have a schnoodle named Dusty. She came to our house last May. She is about 8 years old and has had to adjust to living with a cat as well as a grown up family.( She previously lived with a widower). While we only have son, two of his friends are here frequently so she has learned how to contend with 3 young adults, one middle aged couple and a cat.
Dusty is a bit of princess with attitude. She had never seen a cat before and was used to being the queen of all she surveys. Unfortunately for her, Mars is of the same opinion. It has made for some exciting confrontations.
Dusty is a bit touchy and does not like to be moved from her space. She is bit more grrreeee than we would like her to be-
We are learning what things bother her- that will trigger her grumpy behavior. On the plus side she is a real lap dog and enjoys being with us. She is learning how to walk on the leash when she goes for a walk. I think she is probably a bit old for obedience school.
She is looks lots like Sophie with the same coloring and has recently had her coat trimmed.
Dusty is particularly fond of treats - a kind of dog bacon strips.
We had a big dog before Dusty. Her name was Venus and we had to put her down last winter when she contracted an illness called canine bloat. Our son was quite devastated by her loss as we had had her since she was a puppy ( she was 11 and a half).
Dusty has her own interesting personality and we are learning to live compatibly with one another.
Our pets certainly keep life interesting.
Regards,
Anna

I love this tag! Thanks so much for your blogging. Did I ever ask you what breed(s) Daisy is? I had a dog about 30 years ago that looked exactly like her. Miss that raggedly old pup still.
He would sit on his haunches and beg by saying, "Yum, yum, yum." He ran away before we could take him for a dog food commercial audition. I guess he wasn't falling for the bright lights and fame.

Free Falling

Yellow Leaves 4 Not much quiltingmaking or crafting or any kind of fun stuff going one around The Yellow House this week. One of us, me or Vann, has had a doctor's appointment or medical facility visit every day so far. And we both have one tomorrow. I'm still trying to get help for my back and Vann is suffering the aftereffects of antibiotic therapy for his pneumonia earlier this fall. I had an MRI yesterday and I'll meet with the doctor tomorrow to see what it showed. But at least Sophie's healthy.

And autumn is really putting on a show this week. The foilage is fantastic. Here are a few shots from the neighborhood.

Your trees are absolutely gorgeous- we don't get much in the way of red in our trees in this part of the country. Here, the trees have lost their foliage and are looking bare so far we have had only a few flurries but nothing on the ground to stay. It is nice if you get part way through November without snow.

Hope your are soon back in the pink again as they say and feeling much better.... Vann too

Anna

I have cried so many times in the last few hours - so proud, so relieved, so hopeful again! I hope we ALL keep this young man in our prayers (regardless of HOW we pray) and that we remember the MESS he's inheriting. No one could POSSIBLY 'fix' it in 4 - or even 8 - years. But with our belief and support, he can BEGIN turning this sad, sad situation around! I'm pulling for him & will be SO PROUD to call him my President!

We have a new chapter and I have always been proud to be an American. How can we not be proud of a country that gives us freedom and a right to speak our opinions. I pray our new leaders can deliver the promises they made. I will always support our president 'no matter who it is.' United we Stand!!!
Anyone who can't stand up for our leaders can not be
the American they claim to be. God bless America.

Jeanne, forever and always proud of our country.

Sneak Peak at Hearts

Hearts 1 One of the projects I worked on at retreat in October was this: "Hearts Dot Com," which is based on a raggedy hearts design and made from the polka dot fabric I won on Sharon's blog a while back. I got all the hearts sewn down and the blocks quartered. Now I have to rearrange them and sew them back together. This arrangement at the left is what I've decided on. I started out sewing them together like the block below.

Hearts 2

But that just wasn't working for me. Too busy or something. So I decided to keep the background of each heart the same color, either pink or black.

This is an easy and fun quilt to make. Some of my friends have made the same kind of quilt using stacked circles or stacked rectangles or squares.

A few folks have asked for the Pumpkin Pound Cake recipe, so here it is. Enjoy!

Susan, this is going to be a beauty! What's NOT to love about a heart-themed quilt! And OOOOOHHHH, I'm tempted, but NOT, NOT, NOT looking at that pumpkin pound cake recipe! I KNOW whose naughty self would be nibbling on it, and that naughty person already has enough pumpkin on her thighs from the last 40 years. Sigh ...
