This is what I worked on yesterday. It's a small wall quilt for a pink SwapBot swap. It's supposed to be a vase of flowers in case you can't tell. The yo yos, which aren't yet attached, are the flowers. I'm pretty sure my Swedish swap partner doesn't read Blackberry Creek, so I don't think I'm giving away any secrets--I hope.
It's funny how you can see things in photos that you can't see in real life. I think now that I shouldn't have made the vase black, unless I was going to use more black in the quilt. It seems to sort of punch you in the eye, doesn't it? Maybe if I bind the finished quilt in the same black, that will help. What do you think?
Vann grilled steaks for us yesterday--his best effort in quite a while. The steaks were soooooooo good. I have to brag a little here: my husband is the best griller in the world.
Andy and Steve came by in the afternoon and brought plums they had bought at the Farmer's Market in Birmingham.
The neighborhood was full of booms last night. You could hear the sound of fireworks on into the night. Some of the neighbors gathered in Paul and Karen's yard to see the displays. I didn't stay long (and didn't see anything). I came in, put on my PJs, and read. (I'm reading a book of gory short stories by Joyce Carol Oates.) Vann and Sophie came in just before 10:00.
Today I hope to baste the pink quit and machine quilt it. The deadline is July 15 to get it (and my other pink stuff) in the mail.
BTW, my dad would have been 97 years old yesterday. He passed away in 1977.

What a great quilt! I love it! If you're worried about the black vase, why not do some fancy bit of quilting in the centre of it with a coloured thread -- that might tone it down a bit.

Susan, I think they will love the quilt. The yo-yo flowers make it so fun.
We had a lot of booms last night, but ours were thunder. The fireworks were postponed.
I know you were thinking about your father. My father died on July Fourth so it makes it a bit of a hard day.

Hi Susan ~ I LOVE the pink quilt. I agree with Cathi who mentioned quilting the vase with another color--what about a bright fushia thread to match the bright pink? And I think a black binding would be perfect to pull it all together.
We went to our fireworks downtown...ended up with a flat tire before we got home. All 3 of us girls were huddled in the dark on a lonely street while my husband and son changed the tire. Talk about seeing who roams the streets after dark! I was never so glad to arrive home safely!

Hi Sue, love your quilt block. I personally love the color black, so a black border sounds good to me...be sure to post a pick when its complete.

Susan, this quilt is going to be gorgeous! I love the colors..
Thank you for the sweet comment you left me. Your prayers are much appreciated. Please say a prayer for Dad..He has been very depressed. He told Mom he wanted to die because he is in so much pain from the radiation.
It has been sad..
Sending you love, Nita

Quilt is lovely . My Dad would have been 96 in August but he died in 1974 a day after his birthday. Still miss him he was such a happy fun loving person and wish my children could have spent time with him.

The pink quilt is so cute. One idea would be to glue a couple of different size pink rick rack on the black vase and then a black and pink striped binding. Whatever you do will be really cute.

I like the idea of doing some embroidery in pink over the black. Very elegant touch to contrast with the whimsical yo yos.
Susan, you must put down everything and go out and buy the new book called The Story of Edgar Sawtelle by David Wroblewski. It is the best book I have read in two years. You will love it and will not be able to put it down. It is about a very special boy who trains very unusual dogs. The book has a very similar plot to Hamlet, which is so cool. The writing is incredible and it is the kind of book you want to start all over again when it is done. I swear, I am dreaming about the characters in this book they are so real.

I've not read the other comments - maybe someone has already suggested this. Why don't you use small black buttons for the centers in some of the flowers. That along with black binding would tie it together nicely.
