This maple tree, which stands beside our driveway, was just a twig when we moved to The Yellow House in 1996. Now it gives shade all summer to part of the driveway and a large spot of lawn where Sophie and I can sit and watch squirrels, birds, or whatever happens to be out.
Over the years, some interesting artwork has appeared on the maple tree. We credit much of it to one or more woodpeckers who have drilled lots of holes in the tree, looking for bugs I guess. But some of the designs were created simply by the growing of the tree.

Do you know, woodpeckers have this weird muscle around their heads (or maybe it's a tendon) that keeps them from knocking themselves silly? It absorbs the impact of banging trees like that.
Happy Father's Day to your fella!

EEEEEEKS! You must think I'm SUCH a slug! But I really have been reading your posts! I've just been hideously overworked & unable to comment. I loved all the fabrics & goodies you displayed (and The Secret Garden is one of my old favorites!) Got a kick out of your GYN and eye exam posts! (DO be careful of all tomatoes except those WITH the vine still attached, those grown at home, OR cherry tomatoes. Those are reportedly safe to eat. The rest have produced multiple cases of samonella & 'the powers that be' are looking for the source.) As for the Woodpeckers - I ADORE them! They are so cute & busy! Pretty cool patterns they left, huh?

Love the 'art work' on the tree and how quickly the tree has grown. I have a very mature oak tree in the garden and love to sit with my cup of tea and look at the squirrels and birds that visit it.

We just had a huge branch fall off of one of our Oak trees because a woodpecker had made a nest in it. They just peck out a big ol' hole and move on it. It was too much for the branch though. It's interesting how they peck holes in such neat rows.
